The Oratory of St Philip Neri
Mount Pleasant
Liverpool

The Oratory of St Philip Neri stands on what was once an extensive
seat of Roman Catholic learning comprising the Convent of Notre
Dame, a 'Training College for Mistresses' and the Catholic Institute,
Grammar and Commercial High School. The chapel was built on two
floors, only one of which is still in use as a chapel, and opened in
1853. These premises are now part of Liverpool John Moores
University, and now that the campus has opened into Maryland
Street, the old chapel buildings can clearly be seen from the rear. It is
a long, rectangular building with an apsidal end surmounted by an
angel, and is richly built of brick, with blue brick and yellow stone
dressings. The windows are narrow and lancet, with over arches
emphasised by skilful use of brick and stone. They sit snugly within
massive buttresses which raise the height of the building. The
building is clearly a church, but the Mount Pleasant front blends well
with the school buildings which surround it, and can be easily
missed.

A fine brick building in the Byzantine style, this Roman Catholic
church was designed by PS Gilby and built between 1914 and 1920.
The Spanish garden next door was built in the 1950s by the
incumbent, Dr John Garvin, who created 'El Jardin della Nuestra
Senora' - the Garden of Our Lady - on a bombsite.
