This first obituary is not a Hockley, however, I was sure everyone would enjoy it as much as I did!  It was published in a Rootsweb newsletter:
 
PRATTVILLE PROGRESS, 13 June 1902 (Independence Correspondence):
 
 "Old Billie is dead."  A mule belonging to Mr. D. M. JONES near Huckabee died last Sunday, June 8th, aged 31 years.  Billie has been true and faithful to his calling, he has reared seven children to be grown men and women, gave them all a fair education, made farmers of two of the boys and a doctor of one who now resides in Prattville.  Billie never failed one time to eat his food in 31 years.  He started his 28th crop but was called away before he completed it.  The entire family mourns the loss of Billie for they say there are but few Billies like old BILLIE JONES.
 

William Harold Hockley  (1918 – 2012)

HOCKLEY William Harold Hockley, of Worthington, Ohio, age 94, died September 18, 2012 at Willow Brook Christian Home. Born June 5, 1918 at Yellow Grass, Saskatchewan, Canada this gentle farm boy fondly shared stories about driving a horse and buggy to the one room school house, swimming in a pond at recess with cousins and friends, helping his father at age 13 plow fields with a team of 6 horses, doing chores before school in -30 degree weather, watching his mother cook on a wood burning stove, and experiencing no electricity nor indoor plumbing at his home.

After high school, having just turned 17, Harold hitch hiked to Knoxville, TN to attend Johnson Bible College. He then went on to graduate school at Butler School of Religion in Indianapolis where he met wife May Maas.

Harold and May partnered in ministries at Eminence, IN; Windfall, IN; and retired in 1984 after 34 years serving at Westwood Cheviot Christian Church in Cincinnati, OH. Harold was known for his involvement and strong leadership in Churches of Christ brotherhood organizations including: Ohio Church Development Fund (supporting church loans for construction), Christian Evangelizing Fellowship (helping to support new church growth), Christian Benevolent Association (founding retirement facilities at Mt Healthy & Mason, Ohio), Christians' Hour Radio program announcer, president of the 1966 North American Christian Convention and a 10 year term as Chairman of the Board of Emmanuel School of Religion, Johnson City, TN. Harold also received an honorary Doctorate of Divinity degree from Kentucky Christian College and Doctor of Sacred Theology from Milligan College.

Harold's wife, May predeceased him in 2000.

Harold leaves behind his sister Audrey Zimmerman (Merle), sister-in-law Florence Wilke (Herb), brother-in-law George Chapman, all of Canada and brother-in-law David Maas of Minnesota, and many nieces and nephews.

Harold's immediate family include daughters, Sharyn Morse (Bill) of Worthington, OH and Suzanne Hockley Murry (Hal) of Madison, WI.; granddaughters, Elizabeth Offredo (Jon), Amy Morse (Dinesh Gurshahaney), Lisa Gintz (Bryan) and Jenny Morse (Chris Thigpen), Danielle Murry Knowles (Mark) and Tessa Murry will greatly miss family dinners and movie times together with "Grandpa". The latest joys of Harold's life were his great-grandchildren, Luciana and Santino Offredo and Amelia Gintz. . Shaw Davis Funeral Home provided services. Columbus calling hours will be held Friday, October 5, 2012 at Beechwold Christian Church, 280 Morse Rd, Columbus, OH from 4-6 p.m.
A celebration of life service at Whitewater Crossing Christian Church in Cleves, Ohio will be arranged for a later date.

HEARD, Ruby A– (nee Hockley) - Ruby Annis Heard of Courtice, Ontario died at her residence in Courtice, on Thursday January 12, 2012, in her 78th year– Born in the Township of Uxbridge, Ontario on April 8, 1934, Ruby was the daughter of the late G– Everett Hockley & Mary Edith Jones– She was educated at S–S– No– 5 Uxbridge & Uxbridge High School– In 1955, she graduated as an R–N– from Oshawa General Hospital– On May 17, 1958 she was married to Donald A– Heard of Oshawa– Together they built their home on Taunton Road E–, near Mitchell Corners, and raised their 3 children there– She enjoyed her nursing career as Assistant Night Supervisor of O–G–H– for five years after graduation, 7 years in Public Health for Northumberland Durham Health Unit, and 16 years with Durham Regional Health Unit until retirement in June 1989– Ruby was an avid genealogist and a member of the Oshawa-Whitby Branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society for many years– She also enjoyed calligraphy– With her husband Don, they loved to travel and in retirement they visited many places across North America and made many friends– They were both active members of Oshawa Salvation Army Temple for over 40 years, Ruby having served as Songster, member of Vocalettes, a Sunday School Teacher and Primary Sargeant in the Primary S–S– Division and on the Building Committee– Laterally, they have attended Trulls Road Free Methodist Church, Ruby was a member since January 2011– Ruby is survived by her 3 children, Robyn L– Daniels and her husband Jim of Whitby, Scott Heard and his wife Carol of Oakwood, and Donna L– Short and her husband Kelly of Bowmanville, 5 grandchildren, Justin J– Daniels, Jessica and Aaron Heard, and Holly & Rebecca Short– Also survived by her brother Allan T– Hockley and his wife Doris of Waterloo, and Kenneth H– Hockley and his wife Beatrice of Claremont, nieces and nephews– Resting at the COURTICE FUNERAL CHAPEL, 1587 Highway # 2 Courtice (905-432-8484) with visitation on Sunday January 15, 2012 from 2:00 - 4:00 and 7:00 - 9:00 PM– A Funeral Service will be held at Trulls Road Free Methodist Church on Monday January 16, 2012 at 1:00 PM– Interment Zion Cemetery– In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the Canadian Diabetes Association and Trulls Road Free Methodist Church would be appreciated– On-line condolences may be placed at www–courticefuneralchapel–com

Jean Alice Watters  (1918 -  2010)

WATTERS, Jean Alice (nee Hockley) Born March 26, 1918 near Big Valley, Alberta, passed away in her home at Saanichton, BC on July 21 2010.  Predeceased by her husband, Fred A. Watters; son, Henry (Theresa); and brother, Jim Hockley and sister, Marion Woods. Survived by her children: Lawrence (Maureen); Noreen (Graham) Dixon; Murna (Carlos) Cordero; Gary (LouAnn); Neil: Dianne (Manny) Gavilan; David (Barbara); and her brother, Henry Hockley.  She leaves 37 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.  She will be missed but happily reunited with loved ones.  Service will be held at the Sidney Ward Chapel of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 2210 Eastleigh Way (off Weiller Ave), Sidney, BC on Tuesday, July 27 2010 at 2:00 p.m. 597484

Evelyn (Ray) Turner, daughter of Marjory Alice Hockley and Lewis Charles Ray, granddaughter of Richard (Daniel) Hockley and Mary Alice Nunn
 

On Tuesday, January 20, 2009, Evelyn Turner passed away at the age of 93 years.  

Evelyn will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by her children: Steve (Denise) Turner, Bill (Denise) Turner, Mary Lucht, Kathy (Ron) Ricard, Tom (Lucille) Turner, Frank C. (Jan) Turner, Richard Turner (Kathy Kerr) and Ann Turner (Mike Marshall).  She is also survived by twenty-three grandchildren, thirty seven great-grandchildren, as well as several nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Evelyn was predeceased by her beloved husband Andrew Turner in 2002.

A Prayer Vigil will be held at Holy Family Catholic Parish, 75-Poirier Avenue, St. Albert, on Thursday, January 22, 2009 at 7:00 p.m.  Reverend Father Mitchell Fidyka will Celebrate a Mass of Christian Burial at Holy Family Catholic Parish, on Friday, January 23, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow at St. Albert Catholic Cemetery.

Garfield Jackson Hockley
October 15, 1924 – August 13, 2005

Garfield Jackson Hockley a well known resident of Big Valley, Alberta passed away in the Stettler Health Care Centre on the morning of Saturday, August 13, 2005 at the age of 80 years. Garfield was born October 15, 1924 in Big Valley, son of Jack and Enig Hockley. On April 5, 1945 he was united in marriage to Ella May Gates daughter of Tim and Clara Gates. The Hockley family arrived in west Big Valley district in the summer of 1903 with the Powne family from Antelope, Oregon. The family homesteaded six miles west of Big Valley. Jack Hockley purchased the Powne farm in 1948. Garfield was the third generation to farm and ranch on the original homesteads. Garfield farmed and ranched in the Big Valley area with his dad until 1967. Garfield and Ella purchased the farm from his parents after their retirement to Stettler. They sold the farm in 1993 to the Skocdopole family and continued to live on the farm, Garfield assisting Wayne with odd chores and Ella loving the company of Wayne’s wife Holly and their two little girls. In 1998, Garfield and Ella left the farm and moved into their new home in the Village of Big Valley. They both treasured the companionship of Kelly Armstrong and his wife Robin, and little girl Jessie. Garfield occupied part of his time helping Kelly with his livestock, woodworking projects in the shop, evening card games with friends and coffee with the guys at the Pizza Pantry. Garfield will be remembered for his love of the farm, his sense of humour and community involvement. He was an active member of the community, helping neighbours whenever needed; and volunteering at the Big Valley Agriplex for Oil Kings hockey games. Predeceased by his mother in 1979 and father in 1986. Garfield leaves to mourn his passing his loving wife, Ella of Big Valley; his sister, Madeleine Innocent, of Stettler, AB; his sister-in-law, Min Kobberstad of Red Deer, AB; his brother-in law, George Gates of Stettler; his niece, Sharon (Jerry) Cronk of Stettler; his niece, Elaine (Doug) Scheerschmidt of Stettler; his niece, Linda (Brian) Baltimore of Sherwood Park, AB; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of wonderful friends. Funeral service was held from the Heartland Chapel of Stettler Funeral Home with Rev. Jessica Motherwell officiating. The eulogy was given by Don Saar with soloist Shirley McKay singing “The Place Where I Worship” accompanied by organist Doug McKay who also played for the congregational hymn “Beyond the Sunset.” The recessional was “Happy Trails.” The honorary pallbearers were “All Garfield’s family and friends” with the active bearers being Russell McCrindle, Dale Skocdopole, Tim Burnstad, Bryce Burnstad, Brad Brenchley, and Wayne Brenchley. Interment followed at the Lake View Cemetery, Stettler. Following the service family and friends gathered at the Big Valley Hall for a time of sharing and fellowship with refreshments being prepared by Bill Smillie at Bill’s Catering. Memorial donations may be made to S.T.A.R.S., the Stollery Children’s Hospital or a charity of the donor’s choice, c/o Stettler Funeral Home. In Loving Memory of Garfield Hockley

 
Bert Hockley (1919 - 2004)

Bert was born on July 29, 1919 and passed away on January 17, 2004.  Predeceased by his loving wife of 58 years, Olive and sisters Doris and Betty.  Survived by children Linda, Tom and Mike, grandchildren James, Chris and Heather, sisters Ethel Preston and Phyllis Goscoe.  A goodbye tea to be held at Ethel's home, 1628-143B St. Surrey, B.C. on Sunday, January 25, at 2 pm.

Willard Lyle Hockley  (1923 - 2000)
Memorial service for Willard Lyle Hockley, late of Yellow Grass, age 76 years, was held Monday, January 10, 2000 at 2:00 p.m. from the Church of Christ with Pastor Harold Cooper officiating. Interment Yellow Grass Cemetery. Willard was predeceased by his parents, D. Henry and Lula Hockley; his brothers, Kenneth and Daniel Hockley.  Willard was born May 14, 1923 on White Haven Farm in Yellow Grass. He graduated from Yellow Grass High School and from 1943 to 1944 served as a pilot in the Royal Canadian Air Force.  On February 16, 1945 he married Florence E. Klinck of Yellow Grass.  He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Minnesota Bible College in 1950, later served on the College board of trustees for 20 years.  Willard was pastor at Marion Minnesota Church of Christ from 1949 to 1956. In 1958 he helped establish the Meadow Park Church of Christ in Rochester, Minnesota, where he was pastor until 1962.  During his 40 year career in the ministry he also served congregations in Litchfield and Coon Rapid, Minnesota; Macomb, Illinois; Seattle, Washington and Mitchell and Scottsbluff, Nebraska and from 1980 until his retirement in 1988 was adjunct professor at Plotte Valley Bible College in Scottsbluff.  He returned to Yellow Grass following his retirement.  He leaves to mourn, his wife, Florence Hockley of Yellow Grass; his sons: Donald (Paula) Hockley of Rochester, MN; Ricky (Joy) Hockley of Rapid City, S.D.; three grandchildren: Nathanael, David and Matthew Hockley; his brother, Harold (May) Hockley of Mason, Ohio; his sisters: Eileen (George) Chapman of Calgary, AB; Audrey (Merle) of Charlottetown, P.E.I.; one sister-in-law, Irma Hockley of Regina; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.  In lieu of flowers donations to the Alberta Bible College, 635 Northmount Dr. N.W., Calgary, AB T2K 3J6 or Maritime Christian, 503 University Ave., Charlottetown, P.E.I. C1A 7Z4. Arrangements in care of Hastings-Dionne Funeral Home Inc., Weyburn.
 
Richard Hockley  (1857 - 1943)
At Horsefly Richard Hockley, 85 years of age, died at his home at Horsefly, Thursday, January 14th, as a result of a heart ailment.
Hockley, who was born in England, came to Canada in his early youth taking up farming in Alberta, 22 years ago or so he came to the Cariboo to settle in the Black Creek district, where he again went to farming until a few years ago. He left Horsefly.
He leaves to mourn, beside his wife, three sons and four daughters, Mrs. B. Hooker, Mrs. F. Hooker, Mrs. M. Racher and Mrs. Biggs, all of whom reside in the Cariboo. One son, George, lives in Horsefly and the other two remain in Alberta, yet.
Funeral services were held at Horsefly, Tuesday, January 19th, with Rev. A. Sheward, of Williams Lake, officiating.
