Clive Hughes [email protected] wrote (February 5, 2012):

I am researching First World War casualties linked to Anglesey in North Wales.  I recently came across Albert John Hockley of the Royal Engineers, who is on the Hockley family website Remembrance page, because in 1915 he married an Anglesey girl Mary Hughes of Llanrhyddlad.  He died in 1920 and is buried at Woodgrange Park Cemetery, East Ham, Essex.  It has taken me until now to spot this and link him to Anglesey because he isn't (to the best of my knowledge) named on a war memorial in that county.

I have managed to access his service records (badly damaged in the 1940 Blitz) and some related Census records and would like to know a bit more about him; and am also happy to share what I have located so far in case it is of wider interest.

Though his surviving records do not refer to a birthplace, from his age at death he may be the Albert J Hockley whose birth was registered in the Orsett Regn. District, Essex in the June Quarter 1885.   The Commonwealth War Graves entry also refers to his being aged 35 and the son of a John and A.C.Hockley.   It has been attempted to locate him in the 1891-1911 Censuses and these are the best matches:

1891 Census, Orsett, Essex, England (Baker Street; Brights Farm)

John Hockley  head, married, age 35.  Farm servant.  Born Corringham, Essex
Ann Christian (?Christina) Hockley, wife, age 43.  Born Peterborough, Huntingdonshire
Christian (?Christina) Ann Hockley, daughter, age 11.  Scholar.  Born Fobbing, Essex.
Minnie Elizabeth Hockley, daughter, age 10.  Scholar.  Born Fobbing, Essex.
Albert John Hockley, son, age 3.  Born West Tilbury, Essex.

Albert John is a tad under-aged, as he should be about 5-6 by now.  But there's no other Albert / Albert J Hockley on the Free BMD website born between 1884-89 inclusive that matches.

1901 Census, Brentwood, Essex (Weald Road;  Bardswell Cottage)

John Hakley (sic)  head, married, age 46.  Gardener.  Born Corringham, Essex
Ann C. Hakley, wife, age 52.  Born Peterborough,  Northamptonshire (sic)
Christina A. Hakley, daughter, age 21.  Born Fobbing, Essex.
Albert J. Hakley, son, age 16.  Clerk in Export Agency Dept.   Born Fobbing, Essex.
Frances S. Hakley, daughter, age 13.  Born West Tilbury, Essex.

(Also a boarder, Harry C.Felton, cowman aged 21)

1911 Census, Brentwood, Essex (Weald Road;  Bardswell (?or 1, Bardswell)

John Hockley, head, married, age 55.  Gardener (domestic).  Born Corringham, Essex
Ann Christina Hockley, wife, age 62.  Born Peterborough, Huntingdonshire
Albert John Hockley, son, age 25.   Sorting Clerk, GPO (Civil Service).  Born Fobbing, Essex
Frances Sarah Hockley, daughter, age 23.  School-teacher (Essex County Council). Born West Tilbury, Essex

Ann Christina has the additional information: Marriage has lasted 32 years.  She had also borne 6 children of whom 4 were still living.  Also, it was Albert John who completed the Householder’s Form in his own hand, on behalf of his father.

I do know from the military records that Albert John Hockley married Mary Hughes of Llanrhyddlad in April 1915, confirmed by FreeBMD as registered in the Holyhead Regn. District, June Quarter 1915.  She can be found in 1901 with her father Hugh Hughes (& mother Mary) running a family business as a tailor and draper at Chapel House and later (next door, or indeed the same house renamed) at "Tremarfon", Llanrhyddlad; which is a parish in the northwestern corner of the Isle of Anglesey, and postally came under Valley, Holyhead.  Mary was born locally, and employed as a sewing-maid aged 16 in 1901; but was not at home in 1911 and having a common name she can’t be located exactly.  She had an elder brother John and younger sister Elizabeth Ann and brother Richard H. also.   How she contrived to met Albert John is open to speculation – Welsh servants and workers were employed in quantity in the Midlands, Liverpool, and London, and perhaps she was working near where he was posted in 1914-15).

In these records it appears that Albert John enlisted at London in the Territorial Force on 9 January 1912 (giving his age as 26 years 9 months), joining the 1st London Divisional Signal Company, Royal Engineers (TF) as Sapper no. 673.   This argues that he had certain specialist qualifications both to join the RE - with their higher rate of pay than the Infantry - and maybe in the communications world also (possibly he had qualified as a telegraphist for the General Post Office; or maybe joined this part-time force because workplace friends may have encouraged him?).   On 5 August 1914 with War declared, he was automatically "Embodied" for service.  Much of the detail is missing, but we know that by September 1914 he had volunteered to serve overseas.  He married on Anglesey in April 1915.  The 1st London Division itself was broken up early in 1915 as reinforcements to other formations, but in February 1916 was reformed in France as the 56th (1st London) Division (TF).  Accordingly, Albert John proceeded to France on 12 February 1916 and served with the 56th Divisional Signal Company thereafter.

He was renumbered in January 1917 to no.558014, and promoted Corporal in October 1917.  Whatever else befell him, he served through the War and finally returned to the UK on 6 April 1919.  He was "Disembodied" on demobilization, being sent on his final furlough on 7 April 1919, and his service ended on 5 May 1919 after 7 years and 117 days.  The final leave document confirms a birthdate of 1885, and gives him an "A" health rating.

His wife Mary had seemingly stayed at Llanrhyddlad, as that is the sole address on the surviving part of his main service record.  However, on 13 December 1918 the London Territorial Force Association wrote to the RE Records informing them that she had moved from Anglesey to what seems to be Waltons Hall, Stanford-le-Hope, Essex (document is water-damaged).   On his April 1919 furlough paper it states that his residence is expected to be 45 Belgrave Road, Leyton (Essex, or London E10).

The couple were still there early in 1920 when his health gave concern, and on 8 January he became a patient under the care of Dr. Scott of 60 High Road, Leyton.  It was a heart problem, and he saw to it that Albert John was admitted to the Royal Free Hospital in Grays Inn Road, Holborn, London on 29 January.   He remained there till he died at 9:45pm on 9 February.  Cause of death was stated to be malignant endocarditis.

The paperwork then went through various official enquiries involving the Hospital and the Police, as the RE Records (who were dealing with a pension claim) firstly had unofficial information of his death; and having had this confirmed as above, then tried to locate his widow.  It seems she had sold up the house and moved back to Llanrhyddlad before the end of April.    Her Widow's First Award form for pension gives her birthdate as June 1884, and she received 21 shillings 8 pence per month.  There was no child allowance, so the couple can be assumed to have been childless.  In 1922 she was sent Albert John's British War Medal and Victory Medal, and a little later the (scarce) Territorial Force War Medal.

Someone has now sent me a digest of the Marriage Certificate as follows:

Marriage for Albert John Hockley and Mary Hughs:

Date:         April 14, 1915

Place:         Bethel Hen Chapel, Llanrhyddlad, Wales

Groom:      Albert John Hockley – 29, Batchelor – Clerk, PO – Residence: Romford, Essex

Father:       John Hockley – Gardener

Bride:         Mary Hughes – 30, Spinster – Residence: Tremarfon, Llanrhuddlad

Father:       Hugh Hughes – Tailor

Note, "Hen" with an accent as properly in Capel Hęn Bethel  means "Old" in Welsh, so the name is "Bethel Old Chapel".  This was a Welsh Calvinistic Methodist (now Welsh Presbyterian Church) place of worship.

It confirms that he was a Post Office employee, though of course it doesn't answer the puzzle as to how he met someone from so different a culture to his own!
