Clavering, Essex, England

Copied from records at the Records Office in Chelmsford, Essex, England in 1983.

I do not know the name of the Independent (Congregationalist) Church in Clavering. The name of the church was not on the records. I was told that the Independent (Congregationalist) church has been gone for many generations. Eileen Ludgate took us to the spot in Clavering that once had the Clavering Cong. Church. Only very old unreadable tombstones survive there now.  I believe that the area was known as Clavering Parish.

ie - George Hockley and Harriet Waylett were married Oct.20,1849 at the Parish Church ,Clavering. No vicar or minister recorded. I have since found that there was a reason for the many duplications of vital statistics-I wondered at the time why there were different lists with slightly different wording. All registrations B.M.D. had to be sent in and recorded by the Anglican Church parish of that community. Hence the vicars name is recorded. The burials from 1813 are Congregationalists.

The register of Marriages 1813-1837 P22 No.64 was marr. of Wm. Hockley to Elizabeth Glasscock was "of this parish"  but signed by H. Marsh-minister of the Cong. Church. Had I been more knowledgable at the time I would have taken the time to copy down all entries but as it was I just checked to see if different entries had the same info and left it at that. Too late I found that page nos and item numbers should have been copied.

I believe I sent the Clavering Baptisms1813-66 along with the page nos and item no. from the Record office @Chelmsford. They are entries made and signed by the vicars of the time from their parish of Congregational church members. I hope you are able to understand my ramblings.
