Henry Hockley

Henry Hockley was baptised at Barnston 15 May 1862. He married twice though the first marriage has not been identified. His second marriage was to Sarah Ann Mart. They were married at Dartford Kent 9 October 1909. Henry died 6 March 1916 at Dartford. His father Henry Hockley was baptised 19 October 1828 at High Roding. He married Emma Lydia Bowtell daughter of Thomas and Mary Bowtell 22 October 1857 at Great Dunmow. The family farmed Wellstye Farm at Barnston. They were tenant farmers. In 1855, the farm had been bought from Charles Laver Foakes and William Randall by a William Hockley and it was William who appeared as farmer there in Kellys Directory of 1855. By 1866 it was Henry Hockley and in 1874, John Hockley. The Farm together with the adjacent farm called Mockenherds were sold by William Hockley of High Easter at the Saracens Head in Great Dunmow on 9 October 1874 when Wellstye brought the princely sum of £3375.10s.0p. It still exists but is now owned by Essex County Council. Henry died at Wellstye on 3 January 1867. He was buried just in front of the entrance to Barnston Church. Emma Lydia and her three remaining children moved back into Great Dunmow where in 1881 Emma Lydia and daughter Mary described themselves as Dressmakers. Mary later married and Emma Lydia moved with her daughter and son-in-law. She died in Battersea on 13 Feb 1900 at Elmhurst, Surrey Lane and was buried in Wandsworth Cemetery. Her resting place including grave number is recorded on Henry's headstone at Barnston.
