- Church Records
- The following pages contain baptismal, marriage and burial details for the surname . . . . Hockley!
You may be wondering why the majority of the parish transcripts are from the county of Essex, England. In 1998, Ruth Hockley of Birmingham, England, spotted my (Darlene Heal) meager posting on the Essex surname board and sent an email—same family line—we had a match! Living in Canada I'm limited to what I can contribute to our Hockley research and have taken on transcribing church records, then I email the results to Ruth and she sorts through them and adds the details to the Big Tree of Hockleys. Now the question was, "What do we do with all the Hockley entries we have collected, especially the ones that don't belong to our line?" A website of course!!!
- Those of you who have spent hours in front of a microfilm reader will appreciate the time that has gone into transcribing the following entries. There are no guarantees that there haven't been mistakes made or entries missed. Many of the church records are faded, soiled, water stained, and ink blotched—early church records were recorded in Latin with old English handwriting; and for too many, poor hand writing in general. Transcribing is almost like learning a new language.
- For those who have contributed to this page—We thank you! For others who have extracted Hockley entries from church registers, anywhere, and would like to contribute—feel free to add to the growing list below!
