Hello out there,

I am Frank C. Turner son of Evelyn Ray Turner, who is daughter of Marjory Alice Hockley, who was daughter of Daniel 'Richard' Hockley.  Greetings to the Hockley list.  I'd love to hear from anyone in my line.

At last, we exist! Do we perceive Darlene's hand behind this list's creation?

Saw this list on tonight's New Lists. How many are subscribed?

My HOCKLEY's have spent the last 6 generations in Australia. The earliest confirmed member of my line is one James H. The first positive confirmation of his existence is his marriage to the widow Susannah HART (nee EDIS) in
Adelaide South Australia in 1856. His death certificate simply list his birthplace as England, and a hospital admission record in 1895 indicates he was born in Cambridgeshire England. These and other documents suggest he was born around 1830 to 1835 inclusive.

Any advice on the birth of this fellow?

Looking forward to much activity on this list.

Regards, Tom

Hello Gerry,

I maintain this list and also the Hockley website at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~hockley/homepage.htm and would love to add your Hockley family research to our site. The research material you contribute remains your property and you can add or have it removed at anytime. If you have photo or document images, they can also be added. The only thing we ask is that you not include dates for living members of your family (we do not wish to violate anyone's privacy).

I look forward to hearing from you.

My research into the TUTTLEBY family from Essex, England has shown that my 4 x great grandmother was a Mary Hockley. Mary was born circa 1838 in Essex, her parents were James Hockley and Johanna Giggins. Mary married Henry Tuttleby and they had 9 children and are thought to have lived around West Thurrock, Essex. They immigrated to Australia in 1853 with three of their nine children. Henry Tuttleby died in 1855 and she married James Bogle in 1858. Mary's parental information comes from her marriage certificate to James Bogle.

Does anybody recognise these three? It would be interesting to know where they fit in - who came before and who came after. They arrived in Victoria, Australia in 1853.

Dear Noeleen,

I am unable to supply further details about Mary Hockley and her marriage to William Windiate. I checked my sources and saw this marriage recorded in Boyd's Marriage Index, unfortunately, nothing further. There are a few
Hockley researchers searching their lines in Hampshire, but I don't think they are all on this mailing list, therefore, with your permission I would like to post your query to our Hockley Surname Researcher's List?

Hello List,
While not actually actively researching the Hockley name at this time (although I have a three times great granny Hockley), I carry out extensive research of the parish registers of the County of Essex, England for my Francis family members. During my trawling of the registers of St Mary the Virgin Parish Church, Great Leighs I came across the two following entries, which may be of interest as that parish does not appear to be one that figures largely in the Great Hockley Family Tree:-

Essex Record Office (ERO) reference D/P137/1/5 (Register of Burials 1704-1812)
Ann Hockley (from Braxted) buried the 29th December 1809
(I think that Braxted is split into two parishes i.e Great Braxted and Little Braxted)

ERO reference T/R 229/1 (Transcript of marriages)
Nathaniel Hockley and Ann Howres (or Owers) married 6th July 1620 (from transcript only, original entry not checked)

Hope it's of some use to someone

Hello Everyone,

I have returned from holidays and slowly making my way through my email INBOX. If you wrote me directly, I will reply as soon as I can. Our weather in Northern Canada has finally turned nice, the snow is all melted except for the shaded areas, and this means time to work in the yard with less time on the computer.

I wanted to let everyone know that we finally have a Hockley Family Genealogy Forum at Genealogy.com. It has been a long time coming, years in fact. Some of you may know this website as GENFORUM, it is one of my favourite sites to post genealogy queries.

Hello Hockley List!

Here we are again, summer almost over and fall just around the corner! I was away for most of August and have been home just long enough to catch up on a few things. I'm off again for another month and will be back in Fort St. John the end of September.

The following is a new query added to the Hockley Researcher's page today.

Bye for now,

I'm trying to find information on a FREDERICK HOCKLEY (1808-1885) living in the Hoxton, Croydon and London areas of the UK. It's a long shot I know, but all contributions gratefully received.

I'm researching for a new book on eccentric Victorian gentleman. There's a book of his letters - "The Rosicrucian Seer - Magical writings of Frederick Hockley" by John Hamill.

I'll quote from the back cover:

"Frederick Hockley was a major influence on the spiritual revival of the nineteenth century, though little is known of the man, his life of what happened to his manuscripts."

What we do know:

Educated till age 8 at Captain Webb's School at Hoxton, worked in Catherine Street, Covent Garden, London as a bookseller.

Unknown wife died in the 1850's

Was an accountant by the early 1840's

Lived in the 1870's at 3 Raymond Buildings, Grays Inn, London.

Annual trips to Alnwick, Northumberland (North England).

If you can assist me in any way I'll be forever in your debt.

Thanks,  Nick Murrie

Hello Everyone,

Hope you all had a great summer, I sure did! I'm back in Fort St. John and, as usual scrambling to catch up after an extended holiday! Fall is in full swing and the autumn colours are breath taking, there is talk of snow, unfortunately, I'm not looking forward to the long winter!

Two new Hockley researchers happened to surf onto the Hockley website and, both were surprised at what they found. Thanks to everyone's support, our website continues to grow. Also, thanks to Rootsweb for offering free unlimited space for genealogy web pages!

Special thanks to Ray Hockley <[email protected]> for the three photographs he took at the Theipval First World War memorial in France. I will upload those photos to our Hockley Page of Remembrance, as soon as I can.

I finally managed a visit with Joy and Harry Hockley on one of my trips through the Okanagan Valley, this summer. It was wonderful to meet you both. You live in a lovely part of the province and I will be thinking of you this winter when we are freezing our buns here in the north. Again, it was great meeting you and good luck with your search.

I think that's about all this time around.

Dear Darlene,
I was idly surfing the web and typed in my surname and 'voila', suddenly I am in a world of Hockleys !
My name is David William Hockley, I was born in Birmingham, England in 1953 and emigrated to Kendallville, Indiana U.S.A. in 1977. I am descended from Samuel Hockley born in Paddington Middlesex in 1778 and who died in Birmingham in 1865. I have a number of Hockley relatives and contacts with other descendants of this Samuel Hockley.

Darlene,

I just wanted to say thank you for the Hockley website.  I found the information useful.

I am descended from William Hockley baptised 27 June 1819 in Takeley, and who married Mary Felstead in 1841. William Hockley died 2 March 1901 in Little Canfield aged 82, and Mary died 8 January 1907, aged 84 in Little Canfield.

I knew William Hockley's father was named Henry, and he died on 14 September 1846 in Takeley, aged 52 but I didn't know William's mother's name, so your website was helpful.  Henry Hockley was living alone in 1841, so I guess his wife must have died before then.

William and Mary's son, George Hockley, baptised 29 September 1850 (born 31st August 1850) was my great great grandfather, and he moved to
Chelmsford, and then to Kent, where he died 6th January 1912.

I am off to Germany tomorrow, so if you reply, it'll be a few weeks before I respond.

With kind regard and thanks again,
Greg Taylor

My Uncle was Joseph Hockley born 1930 in or near Walkerton, Ontario, died childless a few years back - my Dad is Ernest Hockley. Their father was Harry Henry Hockley born in England but have no dates (around 1909 I think) their mother was Mary Box - don't know Harry Henry’s father's name.

My Hockley is way back in the 17th century. I have e-mailed Brian Hockley, but would like to also ask anyone if they know anything about the father of Jane Hockley, as follows:

Jane Hockley m. John Pluckrose in 1691 in Linton, Cambs. I am unable to find out anything about her or her family.

Jane and John had a son, Thomas Pluckrose b. 10.12.1698 who m. Nose Natt in Linton, Cambs., 1722. No doubt they would have had other children.

I hope Jane isn't going to be the beginning and the end of my Hockley Tree!

Jane's descendants follow down from Pluckrose/Burgoyne/Whiffen - until my gt. grandmother Emma Whiffen, whose parents came to Australia in 1852.
These families were all from Linton.

Hello Donna,

Not so far as I know, although it is certainly possible! My tree starts with John HOCKLEY, of Reach, who married Mary Challice at Weston Colville in 1703(4), and then married Mary Smith at Chippenham, CAM, in 1708. He was buried at Burwell in 1720. But I can't find his baptism!

You probably know that there are a lot of HOCKLEY entries in the Linton registers, and that indexed transcripts on microfiche are available through the Cambridgeshire FHS, whose website is:

Subject: Sarah HOCKLEY born 1857

Details of the death in March 1923 of a Sarah TOOLEY nee HOCKLEY, daughter of Daniel HOCKLEY (born Essex, England) and Mary Ann FLINT? were posted to Ontario-L. See <
https://lists.rootsweb.com/hyperkitty/th/read/ONTARIO/2006-02/1139187230 > for the full message. She died in Uxbridge, Ontario, Canada and the informant was her brother, a Mr HOCKLEY.

According to FreeBMD There is a Daniel HOCKLEY married, Q4 1856, in St. George Hanover Square 1a, but without a readable page number. There is also a Mary Ann McINTIRE married, Q4 1856, in St. George Hanover Square 1a, page 307. I think McINTIRE could be misread as FLINT? especially with a superscript 'c'.

In the 1911 census for Scott, Ontario North, Ontario, Canada, <
http://www.automatedgenealogy.com/census11/Test2.jsp?sdid=9172 >, Page 8, there is a Sarrah TOOLEY born in Ontario. In the 1911 census for Uxbridge, Ontario < http://www.automatedgenealogy.com/census11/Test2.jsp?sdid=9183 >, Page 5, there are two HOCKLEYs of about the correct age to be Sarah's brothers. William HOCKLEY 1853 and Albert HOCKLEY 1865, both also born in Ontario.

Hi Everyone,

I'm new to the list and wanted to introduce myself and tell you about my husbands Hockley ancestors.

My names Kim Pasquill and I've been researching my family tree for over 20 years. Now it's time to give my husbands lot a try.

His great grandparents are:

William RUFUS and Hannah HOCKLEY they were married June 24th 1885 at Glen Innes according to the rites of the Church of England. He is listed as a bachelor and she is listed as a spinster. There is no ages on the certificate and the only parental information is that her father was Edwin HOCKLEY. William's occupation is listed a an Engineer and both their usual place of residence was Glen Innes.

Not having Hannah's age on the certificate makes it a bit more difficult to pin point a birth certificate, I checked all the births in the NSW BDM indexes and the only birth I can find for a Hannah is this one below.

Born 26th Sept 1868 at Sawmarey? Ponds near Armidale NSW. Hannah HOCKLEY daughter of Edmond HOCKLEY (Sawyer) 34years born in Hampshire and Hannah formerley SMITH 34 years born Banklin HANTS who married 1852 at Hampstead Marshall. Other issue = 3males and 2females living.

Even though the fathers names do not match, it's my theory that she is more than likely the same Hannah who is my husbands great grandmother.

As yet I have not been able to locate a death certificate for Hannah, she does not appear to have died in NSW, but it's possible she could have died in SA. So will have the check the SA indexes.

If anyone is connected to this family, I would be more than happy to hear
from you.

Best Wishes
Kim Pasquill

Subject: Wednesbury Hockley's

Hi,
I have ground to a halt searching my family line.
My ggg grandfather was Joseph Hockley born 1794 in Southampton. He was a butcher/poulterer.
He married an unknown woman don't know if it was before or after moving to
Holborn Middlesex where my gg grandfather also Joseph was born in1826.
They moved to Wednesbury in Staffordshire where a line of Josephs can be traced up to my uncle who died in 1997.

Can anyone help with tracing Joseph Hockley prior to moving to Wednesbury.

 Steve Hockley

Surnames: Hockley...Clay...Kelly

Here in San Antonio, Texas we have an unnamed cemetery with lots of Hockley's buried there. ALL of them are Negro on their Death Certificates. There are some Clay's and a Kelly buried there. The cemetery has no headstones anymore. Everything is gone. The last time any headstones were seen was around 1985. It is now way overgrown and unaccessible. A subdivision was built over some of the cemetery. The city calls it "Hockley" cemetery but has not been proven to be Hockley Cemetery. Does anyone know Clayburn, Irene, Rosie, Maggie, Hanna, Wilson, Louisa, Dora or Alonzo Hockley? My private email is [email protected]
