Hoffman in Cuyahoga County

The Hoffman surname appears in the records of Cleveland as early as 1839 when Isac Hoffman (Hopferman) from Bavaria was chosen by the Israelitesche Society as the city’s first Jewish spiritual leader. My Hoffman ancestors arrived in 1845 from Hattenbach, Hersfeld, Hesse. By the time of the 1850 census there were 48 adults and 34 children with the surname Hoffman in Cuyahoga County, all of which were from the various areas we now consider to be Germany. Later families would come from Russia, Poland, Switzerland, Bohemia, and others.

The primary purpose of this site is to present the information I have gathered on my ancestors and their many offspring in hope of making contact with long-lost cousins. While collecting that family information, I have also accumulated much data on Hoffman and allied families not related to my own. A second objective is to share that information with anyone who could benefit from it. All of this is done with the hope that these efforts will serve as a small down payment on the huge debt I owe to the many people who have helped me over the years.

The "Ancestors" page of "My Family" is only partly Hoffman as this page contains my own ancestors back into their originating country, when I have that information. The second group of pages, "German Hoffmans", is really the ancestors of Jacob and Catharine Elizabeth Bottger Hoffman, my g,g-grandparents. All of these ancestors stayed in or around the small village of Hattenbach, Hesse. The "Descendants" pages are actually the descendants of Johannes and Anna Margarethe Koch Hofmann, my g,g,g-grandparents. I chose this starting point for my family in the US to be able to include as many of the US Hoffman cousins as possible. At least four of the children of Johannes and Anna Margarethe immigrated to this country.

The "All Hoffmans" section contains information on the surname Hoffman, mostly in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, that I have amassed over the years. I don’t think that any of these Hoffmans are related to my family. Two of the families have been well researched and are currently under investigation. The data on these families have been included with the permission of the researchers who are identified with the individual families.

The "Events" section is a Microsoft Access database of 1500+ records pertaining to events such as births, marriages, deaths, naturalizations, etc that I have collected. When possible, these data were included in the two sections above, but there are many records, which I have not been able to connect to an individual in the other families. Because of the nature of the database, the data can be arranged by any of the recorded fields, which makes correlations and connections easier. This section is not complete at this time, but I would be happy to do lookups.

If you have information on any of these persons that you would be willing to share, please contact me and we will find a way to update the pages. Similarly, I have large amounts of information on the siblings and families of my ancestors and cousins that I am willing to share. I have small amounts of data on Hoffmans in Lorain and Medina Counties that I ran across while researching my families.
