Biographies

  James Robert Hogg was born in Jennings Co., IN Jan. 4, 1863 and with his parents migrated to Poplar Bluff, Butler Co., MO where he died July 12, 1934. Mr. Hogg was Sheriff of Butler County for four seperate terms and Mayor for at least one term. He is listed in The Political Graveyard, http://politicalgraveyard.com. Mr. Hogg was a large land holder and operated several farms raising cattle, horses, mules, hogs, etc.and operated his own boarding house, blacksmith shop and slaughter house. He also operated a distillery selling whiskey under the brand name of Jim Hogg's Corn Whiskey, distilled by James R. Hogg Distilling Co.,Poplar Bluff, MO, Trade Mark Copyrighted, Registered Distillery No. 29, 1st Dist.Mo, Inc., which was shipped all over the country. Of course, the latter operation ceased when Prohibition became effective. Submitted by T. Med Hogg.

HOGG  CEMETERY, Putnam Co., MO

Description: Section 13, Twp. 65, Range 17, Elm Township, near Graysville,
Putnam County, MO.  Location:  From Hwy. 136 take 149 south approximately 4.0
miles.  After passing the Rose Cemetery take the first gravel road to the left
and at next intersecting road (abt a mile) continue straight and cemetery is to
left on this road which dead-ends.

This cemetery is located on the William and Luanna Sparks Hogg family
homestead, and is the submitters great-great grandparents.   Read 1979 and
rechecked 1998.

The William Hogg that is listed in the cemetery beside his wife
Louanna was the head of the Hogg family. (obviously) His
parents were born in Scotland, according to the census but
his  naturalization papers stated he was born in Ireland in
1792 and he came to this country in 1832 through the Baltimore
MD port.
