Holcombe Family Genealogy
Welcome to the Holcombe Family Genealogy home page where we post the genealogies of the descendants of Thomas Holcombe and related families. In addition we will keep information on the unverified ancestors of Thomas in hopes that we might promote research that will verify his ancestry.
The Seth Holcombe Preservation Barn
The Salmon Brook Historical Society is building a two-and-a-half story barn on their current property to house artifacts and archives. The new building will have rooms that are specially climate conditioned for the storage of donated genealogical papers and materials.
Perhaps you have requested help in your own genealogy research, or shared your research with Salmon Brook, or purchased some of their Granby history books, or visited the Society
You can make a contribution that will ensure the safety and availability of your family genealogy records now and for future researchers. The Salmon Brook Historical Society is a 501(c),(3) charitable organization. Contributions are tax deductible in accordance with IRS regulations.

Our Mission
Our intent is to expand the work of Seaver, McCracken, Bowman and others into the 20th Century. The first step of this process is to post on the web their genealogies compiled into one web site.
We then invite others to send their documented additions and corrections that will be posted as quickly as possible to promote additional feedback. We would like to use the web and its tools as much as possible.
Lastly, it is only appropriate to "give something back" so some of the census records we have come across have been transcribed and enhanced and are now available on the web.
Links
The following links are directly to the sites we are maintaining on Family Gathering and Family Tree Maker sites where we store the output from our software. You will have to use your Back button to return to this site. Please use this data freely to extend your own research, but please, please, please use what little documentation we have included. We try to post all documentation and source material, and hope you will too so as to avoid some of the web postings that are total dream works.
Thomas Holcombe The 14 generations descended from Thomas compiled primarily from Stiles, Seaver, McCracken and Bowman, with contributions from many others. Includes photos of recent generations of my immediate family. Also, the descendants of Thomas' son-in-law, Sgt. Josias Ellsworth, are included. There is no evidence that he is the son of Gilbert.
Rutherford B. Hayes The ancestry of our 19th President whose Hayes relatives frequently married into the Holcombe line. Compiled from an article in The American Genealogist, by McCracken. The Hayes' and Holcombes married one another frequently in the 17th century.
Richard Skinner. Our Skinner ancestors who came from England to Virginia and North Carolina. Includes photos of recent generations.
Hiram Ulysses Grant. The descendants of Matthew Grant who came over on the Mary and John with Thomas Holcombe. Hiram was mistakenly registered at West Point by his congressman as Ulysses Simpson Grant and he was stuck with that name and became the 18th President. We are related through the Buells - thank you Matt and Ella. All of the information is from George McCracken in a TAG article.
James Earl Carter. The family of our 39th President who is also related to Senator Sam Nunn. We are related through my Holcombe cousin whose wife's sister married Jimmy's nephew--what a stretch! All of the information is from Kenneth H. Thomas, Jr., who published it during Jimmy's presidency. Includes a few pictures courtesy of the Carter Library in Atlanta.
We hope to put up links to the major families from Windsor/Simsbury/Granby, like Phelps, Barber, Bissell, and Griswold that all married Holcombes at one point or another.

This web research is not possible without the thousand of people who contribute to their local genealogy societies and post their own research to help others. Below are some sites of individual users and also some "commercial" sites that have searchable data bases. These are but a few of the many we have had the pleasure to find.

Census Files
Hartford County, Connecticut on the USGenWeb; this site changes frequently and is not under my control. This is an FTP site. Start with the "indx" files at the end to find the surname you are looking for. It will tell you which text file has your data.
Granby, Connecticut and Avon, Connecticut PDF files. You will need Adobe's Acrobat reader to view these files. These are 150 page documents that are nearly half a megabyte in size each and will take about 5 minutes to display on your computer. If you want to print the whole thing, be sure to load a lot of paper. These are the entire copyrighted books as they were printed and bound and submitted to the copyright office.
