How could Emma Hollis avoid meeting Edward Chapman when her sister lives in the same road as Edward the Farrier, age 17! (see his 1881 census, below)

Street address:  No. 3 Devonshire Street, opp. Plough Brewery (No. 2), Lambeth, Princes Ward, London

Household in 1891:

Chapman, Priscilla M 4 months Carshalton, Surrey Daughter

LAMBETH IS SOUTH OF WATERLOO AND NORTH OF THE OVAL, VAUXHALL, AND WEST OF KENNINGTON. LONDON SE11. DEVONSHIRE STREET IS NOT CALLED THAT ANYMORE. IT WAS ROUND THE CORNER FROM UPPER KENNINGTON LANE, AND ON THE OTHER END, SMITH’S PLACE (not to be found). SANCROFT STREET IS NEXT IN THE CENSUS – LONDON SE11. RUNS THE OPP WAY FROM CLEAVER ST (WHERE HE LIVED NEXT, IN 1901) AT THE INTERSECTION OF KENNINGTON LANE AND KENNINGTON ROAD.

Neighbours are: next door at #1 is a Carman (William Wicks) and his son (William H. Wicks) a Silman’s Assistant? (Note by enumerator says: Colour?), his wife is Emily. Next door the other side, at #5 are the Young’s – William H. is a leather gilder, his wife Elizabeth’s young brother, Alfred Walters is with them – he is a Late Telegraph Messenger. At #8, Daniel Shaw is a Smith – Fitter with a wife Lucy. The building is divided. Others in the road are A widow Wardrobe Dealer who’s son is a Barman and daughter is a servant. A Letter Carrier, Saw Dust Dealer, a Wood Chopper with an Ironing wife, and a daughter who is a Corker at the Local Mineral Water Works. A Gas (Lock) Fitter, and a "Costermonger, Poultry" to which the enumerator has added "Hawker."

The Beer Retailer business owner, Arthur E. Cutchery, is at the Plough Brewery with his wife Florence and young children Ellen and Arthur. He hails from Suffolk and his wife from Maidstone. At #4 is a Horse Keeper / Groom Alfred Congerton with his wife Edith and little children Sidney, Caroline, Edith, and baby Ellen. Edward Chapman, as a farrier, is probably kept very busy by the Horsekeeper / Groom (Alfred Congerton) for the Brewery.

Round the corner in Upper Kennington Lane are a Devonshire family - Police Constable, with 2 sons – a Blacksmith (George Hodge, probably works with Edward), and a ?Brick; their boarder is a Cab Driver (Groom), also in the building is Thomas Jones and his wife Mary Ann – he is a Wood Carver. Father & son Surgeons (John and Robert Graham) are from Cavan in Ireland - they live at 56 Upper Kennington Lane, with John’s wife Jane, and a servant.

Most of the neighbours are Londoners.
