CLARK, Dr Jerry H. passed away on Thursday, September 18, 2003 at the age of ninety. He died as he lived, in a valiant fight, and in the company of his family.

Jerry was born on October 25, 1912 in Texas the third of four children. Upon the death of his mother, Alice Bret King in 1929 he took over the care of his youngest sister, Tini. He graduated from Cisco High School at the age of 16, valedictorian of his class. He worked his way through school, from Randolph Junior College, Southern Methodist University to the University of Texas, Austin, where he earned his Phd in Psychology. His main diversions from school and work were girls and music, both pursued through the auspices of his band, J and His Midnight Revelers.

Jerry served in the Army for twenty-nine years, starting as private and retiring as a full Colonel. Following WWII he moved to California, at which time he found, and fell in love with Santa Barbara. He was a Professor and Registrar of the Santa Barbara Teachers College when it became UCSB and moved to its current location. He spent many carefree years on Miramar beach, playing beach volleyball with what became life long friends. In the spring of 1958 he met the love of his life, Edith Mattiat at the Plow and Angel Bar in Montecito. Shortly thereafter, Jerry got married, returned to active service and had a son, Jon.

Jerry retired from the Army in 1971 and happily returned to Santa Barbara. Jerry avoided retirement by becoming the first Psychologist at Sansum Medical Clinic, another source of lifetime friends. He became actively involved in local politics and in supporting the professional practice of psychology, becoming President of the California State Psychological Association twice and President of the local association more times than anyone can remember. Jerry worked in some fashion until the end of his life, taking time off to cause trouble here and there, and spend time with his grandchildren.

Jerry had a lifelong interest in fitness as a champion tennis player through his sixties, and later as a swimmer through the end of his life. He enjoyed baking and making waffles for anyone who would appreciate them, and never missed the opportunity to tell a joke. He would not turn away from a just fight, and placed tremendous value on hard work and getting a good education. Jerry had an intense interest in people and was quick to reach out to others in their times of need.

Above all else, Jerry loved his family and friends. They were, he said, what made life worth living. Jerry is survived by his wife Edith, son Jon, daughter-in-law Susan and grandchildren Austin, Nate and Sarah.

Jerry's family would like to thank all those that supported him over the years and asks that in lieu of flowers donations be made to Planned Parenthood of Santa Barbara or the Community Environmental Council.

He preached in Kentucky, Indiana, Iowa, Missouri, Illinois, Kansas, Arkansas, Montana, Idaho, Oregon and Washington, eleven states in all. Several thousand were made to rejoice in the hope of the Gospel under his untiring and efficient labors. His efforts and zeal to preach the word knew no bounds. When ever and wherever duty called he we was always ready. NO sacrifice of time, means or energy seems to great for him. Being a man of positive nature, and a decided and strong personality, he hated sin and shams with all his being, and loved truth and righteousness with the same degree of vehemence. He loved his Lord and Master with all his soul. Only second to this did he love his family and his fellow men. In his death another veteran of the cross has, therefore, laid down his armor in honor, having fought a good fight. He finished his course, in the faith well kept to the end. For many days he waited for the summons, "Child come home," and the "Come ye blessed of my father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world; for I was hungry and ye gave me meat. I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you took me in, naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came unto me." He leaves a faithful wife and one son and seven daughters, with other relatives and friends to mourn his absence. Yet, none of them sorrow as others who have no hope.

A short, simple and unostentatious service was held at the home, Wednesday morning, at 9:30, conducted by Rev. A. J. Carrick, of Kahoka. The following Scriptures were read as expressive of the life and sentiments of the deceased: Psalm. 23:1-6: Acts, 20:25-27: Romans, 8:31-39: II Corinthians, 4:15-18: 5:1-10: II Timothy, 4:6-8: Jude 1:24,26. After the services the body was taken by the friends to Hamilton, Ill., where it was laid peacefully to rest, till He shall come again, whose right it is to rule. "Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth, saith the Spirit, Yea, that they may rest from the labors, and that their works do follow them."

She slipped quietly into the presence of the Lord April 26, 2004 At the age of 83. Having lived a good and prayerful Christian life. Always serving others, never worrying about herself. She took care of her husband, her parents, looked after grandchildren, a lifetime of service to others.

Mom, they told me was a tiny child, who was full of merriment. She loved to read and she and the other Hollis children played together.

She dearly loved her cousin Edward who was a few years younger than herself. They played together on Hollis creek. Uncle Johnny once scared them by

When we came to Holley in the late forties and early fifties she came with her second husband Arthur D. Crabtree. I was already here with Mary and Sid Crabtree, mom's mother and stepfather. After moving here [Florida] a lot of the family came down often to visit and we did have a lot of good times.

(1) OBITUARY The Hico News Review...July 15 1938

Lifelong friends of S. T. ( Dick ) Hollis, 49, were grieved and shocked Thursday morning to learn of his sudden death at his home here at 11:15 about 45 minutes after he was reported to have swallowed the contents of a vial of carbolic acid.

No reason has been found for the rash act further than the suffering Mr. Hollis had undergone the past few years of failing health. About two years ago he was seriously ill at a hospital and he had never recovered from the ravages of that illness.

Medical aid was summoned immediately after Mr. Hollis had gone to the kitchen of his home and told Mrs. Hollis what he had done. A weakened heart and the effects of the potion were more than his pain wracked constitution could endure and within a short time he succumed.

Details of funeral services were not obtainable Thursday afternoon pending the arrival of out-of-town relatives.. A son, Hector, and a daughter, Mayo, were immediately notified at Bakersfield, California and telephoned at 3 o' clock Thursday afternoon that they were leaving at once by automobile and expected to arrive here within 24 hours. Besides these two children and his wife, Mr. Hollis is survived by another son, Jack and another daughter, Mary Helen, of Hico, as wellas a number of other relatives.

Members of the family have the understanding sympathy of a host of friends, formed through their lifetime citizenship in this section, where they have spent all their lives. The family moved to Hico nine years ago from Duffau where Mr. Hollis operated a store for several years.

The Hico News Review...June 24 1932 Walker L. Roberson

DEATH SUMMONS ONE OF LAST SURVIVORS OF DOVE CREEK FIGHT

Closing a life that was made colorful by the struggles common to pioneers of this section of the country, death came last Sunday evening at six o'clock to Walker L. Roberson, who was a long time resident of this section, but who had been visiting for the last few weeks at the home of his daughter, Miss ( sic ) Will Harrell near Haskell, Texas.

The body was brought to the home of his son, A. B. Roberson, in Hico and burial was in the Duffau Cemetery, preceding which funeral services were held at 10 A. M., Tuesday, June 21, conducted by Elder Jno. L. Wilson.

Mr. Roberson, who was born in Mississippi in 1847, came to Texas at an early age and settled near Duffau. He was married to Mary Hollis in 1868, and to him and his good wife, who preceded him in death 24 years ago, were born 12 children, three boys and nine girls, four of whom have died, and eight survive as follows: A. B. Roberson of Hico; Mrs. Moody Rusk of Colorado; Mrs. Willie Glover of Rule; Mrs. Joe Hollis of Bowie; Mrs. Jessie Rusk of Canyon;Mrs. Vergie Claunch of Canyon; Mrs. Martha Harrell of Rule; and Mrs. Beatrice Hyles of Matador. Also surviving are four brothers and two sisters; J. W. Roberson of this place; W. B. Roberson of Fort Worth; S. M. Roberson of Burkburntt, and Mrs. Sarah Ann Roberts of Duffau; also 40 grandchildren and a host of great-grandchildren.

Mr. Roberson, who was a member of the Church of Christ, had lived a long and useful life, and was looked down upon as a worthy Christian gentleman by all who knew him. He was an old settler of the Duffau community, and had lived most of his life within seven miles of Hico, although for the past few years he had made his home with one another of his children.

One of the last survivors of the Dove Creek Indian fight, Mr. Roberson's early life was extremely active, and he was one of those hardy pioneers who suffered hardship and privation to build up this country and make it a safe place for their families and descendents. He was well known to all old time residents of this section, and his passing had an added note of sadness through the realization that his death adds one more to the list of early settlers, who are gradually passing to their reward.

Rex Hollis, Lt. Col, USAF,

"How can we excel today?" Beloved wife Polly, family, and friends lost a true all-star, a champion, and a hero when Rex Reginald Hollis passed away on Dec. 15, 2010 at Lake Norman Regional Medical Center. Earning both his Bachelors and Masters degrees in electrical engineering from Oklahoma State University, Rex served in the U.S. Air Force for 23 years, serving extended tours in both Pakistan and Panama in intelligence communications. He finished his Air Force career in Washington, D.C. as Chief of the Technical Branch of the Defense Communications Agency, holding the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and receiving the Joint Services Commendation Medal. Following retirement from the Air Force, Rex joined the Southern Pacific Company to help them develop their bu-siness-class long distance telephone service. While there, he became one of the creators of a residential long distance service that he named Sprint, which ultimately became the telecommunications giant known today by the same name. Rex then returned to Washington, D.C. and entered the satellite tel-ecommunications industry with Ford Aerospace, where he met and married Polly Reed, eventually becoming president of Ford Aerospace Satellite Services Company. During this time, he ser-ved on the board of directors of the Institute for Systems Research at the University of Maryland, as a member of the Executive Council of the Satellite Broadcasting & Co-mmunications Association, and as chairman of the Satellite Industry Association. He also ser-ved 6 years as a member of the Industry Sector Advisory Committee for the U.S. Dept. of Commerce, and worked with key members of both the Transportation Dept. and the State Dept. Rex ended his career with the sale of the first satellite telecommunications system to the country of Russia, making over 29 trips to Moscow until his retirement to Lake Norman in North Carolina in 1996. During the last 14 years, Rex and Polly traveled extensively, visiting every continent in the world and enjoyed their lakeside home, ballroom and Latin dancing, and a wide circle of devoted family and friends. Rex worked on his memoirs of an exciting and fulfilled life, which will be published for family and descendents at a later date. A proud member of the Sons of the American Revolution, Rex is survived by his beloved wife, Polly Reed Hollis; sons, Rex Reginald Hollis Jr, and Richard Laird Hollis; daughter, Rhonda Hollis Livermore; sister, Clara Hollis Hargreaves; nephew, Robert Wallace Jr.; niece, Sherrilyn Wallace Wilson; step children, Holly Ann Ruehlin and Rex James Ruehlin; grandchildren, Kristen Hollis Rhodes, Alicia Ho-llis, Jennifer Hollis Wo-therspoon, Mary Marlene Maryanopolis and Logan Livermore; and step grandchildren, Chelsea Baumgartner and Casey Baumgartner. He is preceded in death by father, Festus Flint Hollis; mother, Cora Laird Hollis; and sister, Frances Hollis Wallace. Rex was born on July 28, 1929 in Fayette, Ala. and lived his magnificent life with honor, patriotism, joy and integrity. He was a true "Southern gentleman" who was at home anywhere in the world. He will be terribly mis-sed by all who knew him. Visitation will be held Sunday, Dec. 19 from 3-5 p.m. at Cavin-Cook Funeral Home. A memorial service celebrating his magnificent life will be at the same location on Monday, Dec. 20 at 3 p.m. followed by a reception at the home of Heinz and Debbie Little in Mooresville.
