During World War II my father,
Jeffrey Jones was lance bombardier in the 70th Field Artillery Regiment of the
139th Infantry Brigade and saw action in North Africa and Italy. At
the end of the war the brigade ended up in Graz, Austria. During this time they had little to do, so he and a few
pals formed THE SEVEN ZEROS DANCE ORCHESTRA; named after their regiment 70th Field Artillery
Regiment .
The Seven Zeros were a nine
piece band and led by band leader Harry Pratt, consisting
of:
|
Harry Pratt (1st Trumpet) from London
Johnny Miles (Singer and guitar) from
Tyneside
Tommy Armitage (2nd Trumpet) from
Yorkshire
Cecil Maslen 'Joe' (Alto Saxophone
and clarinet) from Bath
Jack Pemberton (Tenor Sax) from
Blackpool
Bill Marshall (Piano) from Southend
on Sea
Leonard Satchwell (Violin) from
Mangotsfield, Bristol
Jeffrey Jones (D. Bass) from West
Derby, Liverpool
Jack Roberts (Drums) |

In their brown and cream suits they played
together until they were demobbed in 1946 and played at army dances in
local theatres such as the Opern Theatre and made several radio broadcasts on
the forces network and BBC.

An article in the Bath Chronicle and
Herald from 8th September 1945
It's likely they broadcast
from the BFN (British Forces Network) Graz. "You
are listening to the Forces Broadcasting Service, Austria,
operating from stations in Graz, Klagenfurt and Vienna."
