CAUTION

The Matlock/Medlock family is very difficult to work with.  Many records are missing because of the time periods involved.  The only concrete information I have starts with Smith Matlock b. 1824 after his marriage to Harriet Hamm.  His earlier marriages to Letsie Shelton and Emaline Jacobs are from census records, family members, and information given by other Matlock researchers.

At the present time there is a DNA testing program going on to try to determine Medlock/Matlock connections.  The results are interesting to say the least and will help identify DNA factors that match, to pinpoint which lines are the closest related.  It is necessary that samples be given by a male family member with the Matlock/Medlock sir-name. Hopefully those Matlock/Medlock families will be willing to give DNA samples to help connect the different lines before the last members of some of these families are gone and the information lost forever.

Information for this testing can be found at: http://www.ba044ancestry.com/Matlock/DNA%20FAMILY%20TREES.html

Biographical Information

The family of Matlock was found in the town of Matlock, Cropwell Bishop, Nottinghamshire, England.  Fact or Fancy?  It is fact that a  William Matlack (or de Matlack) was the father of John Matlack b. March 1560, Thomas Matlack b. April 1564, Margaret Matlack b. June 1567, and George Matlack b. 1572.   There is a record of John Matlack married to Margaret Ashe (Asse) in June of 1586, John died in 1626 and Margaret died in 1612.  Children listed to this couple are Asse Matlack, Elizabeth Matlack b. 1587, Thomas Matlack b. 1589 and George Matlack b. 1606.  Church records show George Matlack and Jane Hall married November 7, 1636 in St. Giles Church.  It is generally believed that their children were John Matlack b. 1638, died January 1717/1718 St. Peters Parish, New Kent VA, George Matlack b. 1642, Dorothy Matlack b. 1645, William Matlack b. June 1650, died December 1728 in Pensaukin Creek, Chester Twp., NJ., Elizabeth Matlack b. December 1652, and Thomas Matlack b. June 1656.

Records indicate that John Matlack married Ann Moore in 1657 in Muskham, England.  Their children were probably John Moore b. 1644, David b. 1666, William b. 1667, and Moore b. about 1669.  Ann Moore Matlock died in 1699 in New Kent, VA.  It is believed that the family came to the Americas on the ship Griffin in 1677.  During this period the last name seems to have become Matlock/Medlock.  John married for the second time to Margaret about 1700.

William Matlack, believed to be John's brother, emigrated about the same time although the exact dates are unknown.  It is believed that he sailed on the ship Kent to Burlington, NJ about 1682.
