FAIRCHILD

The name of Fairchild is of ancient orogin and is said to have come from Scotland into England, having in the Scottish the equivalent of its present English form, Faribairn. It has been thoroughly identified with the development of New England colonies, and of the newer states throughout this territory, and has been borne by many good citizens, including a governor of Wisconsin, and others conspicuous in the professions and in various walks of life throughout the country.

He had a home lot in 1664 on what is now Elm street, Bridgeport, and was a merchant.
He married (first) in England, a daughter of Robert Seabrook and (second) Katharine Craig of London, England. There is a record showing that he executed a bond before the second marriage, providing that the bride should have two hundred dolllars out of his estate. This matter was adjusted by the court after his death. The inventory of his estate amount to three hundred and fifty pounds. He worked at farming in his youth and when a young man entered the employ of Holt & Main, dealers in flour and feed, at Port Leyden, N.Y., and though the business changed hands several times, he remained until 1903, when he came to Lowville, and purchased a meat market of E.E.Williams. The market was then in the Murray Block, but his business grew and a change became necessary. He then occupied the store in Masonic Block, a more central location with more spacious quarters and better facilities for handling the greatly increased volume of trade. He has been particularly fortunate in catering to the demands of the summer colonies of this section, and in 1909 he equipped, at Fulton Chain Station, a modern, up-to-date market especially designed to supply the needs of the cottagers along the Fulton Chain of lakes, which has grown enormously in popularity in recent years. He has also invested in valuable real estate in Lowville, and is developing this property in a way to benefit the town as well as himself. He is a man of incessant industry and quick to see his oppotunities. He was the first to bring to Lowville a carload of livestock for beef.

Jan. 13, 1839, died May 3, 1906, son of John and Margaret (Lucas) McMoran. Mathew McMoran was one of the prominent men of the town where he lived, partner in a large manufacturing concern at Constableville, and for many years identified with the business interests of that town, a vestryman in St. Paul's Protestant Episcopal church there.
