ANCESTORS TO AMERICA

In December 1620 my first ancestors arrived in Plymouth, Massachusetts on the Mayflower after a 66 day journey on the Atlantic Ocean. They are John & Joan (HURST-ROGERS) TILLEY and John & Elizabeth (TILLEY) HOWLAND. The Tilleys were from Henlow, Bradfordshire, England and John Howland was from Fenstanton, Huntington, England.

William BUCKLAND came to Massachusetts with the Winthrop Fleet in the 1630s & lived in Hingham Massachusetts. This includes a long line of William Bucklands. The earliest William Buckland is born about 1606 in Weymouth, Dorset, England. He & his wife Mary BOSWORTH had their first 2 children in England (1632 & 1633) & the next born, Benjamin was born in 1640 in Hingham, Massachusetts. The last born in 1644 is my ancestor, William who died in Podunke (East Hartford), Connecticut.

It is unknown when the HUDSONS arrived, but it is prior to 1776. Eleazer HUDSON was born 9 February 1776 in New York. He & his family of 7 children with Abigail & 3 children with Elizabeth CONNOR lived in Goshen, Orange Co. NY.

Hans Ulrich SCHWENCKEL/SWINGLE came from Hulben, Wurttemberg, Germany and arrived prior to 1776. According to a story in "The Wayne Independent" he served 2 1/2 years bondage in Bucks Co. PA to pay for his passage.

Legend is that John SHAFFER came from Kassel, Hessen, Germany before 1771 hiding in a hogshead barrel until the ship was at sea. It is thought that he was indentured to pay his passage.

John ROBINSON was born 22 July 1771 on the voyage from Ireland to America. It is not known from where in Ireland.

George ENSLIN may have been born in Germany but it is only known that he was in Northampton Co. PA, the following year Canaan Township Wayne Co., by January 7, 1797 when he purchased 50 acres for 50 pounds from Hans Ulrich Swingle.

The REILING family, Moriz Lorenz/Lawrence came from Ersingen, Baden, Germany & arrived in Baltimore in 1828. He settled in Ohio.

The FRIEDMAN(N) family, Franz Josef & Rosina, came from Moos um Buhl, Baden, Germany, left from Le Havre, France & arrived with their children in Buffalo, New York by way of Canada in 1832. They settled in what was then Stark Co. Ohio.

James LEACH came from Scotland and was in Hope Township, Ontario, Canada by December 1835 when he married Elizabeth Jemima NUGENT. His elder sons wended their way on the 'Star of Empire' in 1864 and settled in Creston, Ogle Co. IL.

Some time in the 1840s or early 1850s the MORROW family left Co. Armagh, North Ireland. Ann Jane was unable to travel on the same ship with her parents due to crowded conditions. The ship her parents traveled on never reached its destination & through unknown circumstances Ann Jane was raised by the LEACH family in Ontario, Canada.

Francis & Mary NUGENT came from Edenburt Townland, Lurgan Parish, Co. Cavan, Ireland to Ontario, Canada about 1827.
