He sailed around South America to San Francisco to the California Gold Rush about 1850. He met there a Mr. Caudle (Caudell) and returned with him to Johnson County, Arkansas, where he settled and married Mr. Caudle's daughter Amanda Jane. Oral history relates the following: that John Austin Hunt had remained behind in Ireland to tend his mother and that he came to the U.S. after her death; that he joined his siblings in Philidelphia, PA; that his siblings included a brother named Jim or James who also went in the Gold Rush; and that after separation from his siblings he never had contact with them again. John Austin HUNT took U.S. citizenship in 1858, served in the Frontier Division of the Union Army during the Civil War, removed his entire family to Indian Territory (Oklahoma) in 1871, and died there in 1906 shortly before statehood. John Austin and Amanda Jane Caudell HUNT had 14 children, 12 of whom attained adulthood and had families. If anyone has a story similar to this, I would really like to hear back.
