The Josephine Brown Collection The information that follows is from the "Josephine Brown Collection" which Pam and I copied at the Warren County, Ohio, Public Library. This is an OCR scan of the original manuscript and it includes everything in this collection that is related to Hunt. This is the document that Mitchell Hunt mentions (but had not reviewed) in his "Consuelo Furman" manuscript (December 1985). The document is presented absolutely verbatim. The abbreviations, speculations, questions, and information enclosed in ( )'s are Josephine Brown's and not mine. The few "errors" will be obvious to those who are familiar with the line of Thomas and Cicely Hunt of Westchester, NY from which these folks descend. If any of you derive any benefit from this particular manuscript, I would appreciate your letting me know by private email. If this is your line, I would appreciate receiving whatever info you have. I am also interested in locating living relatives of both Josephine Brown and Helen Hahn, both of whom, I understand, are deceased. John Midlothian, VA jsc@i2020.net While early records have not all been cleared, our Hunt appears to have been descended from Richard Hunt, bailiff of Shrewsbury, Eng. thru' his son Thomas whose name is first mentioned in 1652 as a resident of Stamford, Ct. Later he settled at Rye, & Westchester, N.Y. where he owned extensive land. He m. Cecily Pasley. Of their five children, we are descended from Joseph, a blacksmith in Westchester Co. who m. Mary _______. Of Joseph & Mary Hunt's eight children, our line comes from the oldest son, Joseph Jr. (known as Capt. Joseph, as he served in the Colonial Militia in N.Y. in 1710.) The rest of the records we know are correct as they are from Capt. Joseph's own Bible. He m. Bethia Ferguson in 1697. Their Children: Elizabeth, b. Jly 25, 1698; d. Those of us who have worked on this feel certain that Silvanus (Sylvanus) was the father of Jonathan Hunt. The Bible was handed down generation after generation & his was the only death other than Elizabeth Lawrence of a grown member of the family. He lived in Somerset Co., N.J., 1 1/2 mi. "up the rows" from Princeton Univ. campus (tho' it wasn't there then). His place was next to Stony Creek. No one can find his grave or his wife's nor can they find any record of her name, or any will. However he lived there, according to an old map & a court record. Also Jonathan Hunt lived "near Princeton" & in Somerset Co. The descendants who lived at Hunt's Station, near Mt. Vernon, Ohio well remember the stories that the family watched the battle of Princeton in the Revolutionary War from their house. Mr. Wayne Farmer located the spot in 1949 & said it was about 500 yds. from the real battlefield. All of Jonathan Hunt's family moved from near Princeton, N.J. to Washington Co., Pa. in 1788. Jonathan Hunt m. Christiana ________. He was b. Dec.1,1741; d. 7/5/1825 (in pencil is noted "the 1st. son of Sylvanus") Christian (some places - Christiana) b.Je. 3,1741 d. We have not found exactly where in Washington County he lived but he attended Ten Mile Presby. Church, one of the earliest churches in Wash. Co., for it was not settled until after 1794, when Gen. Wayne defeated the Indians at Fallen Timbers. In a few years, probably disturbed by the Indian raids in that area, he moved to Brooke Co., Va. (now W.Va.) where the Doty & Wells families had emigrated direct from N.J. But by 1805, all had moved to Knox Co., Ohio, along with a group of Presbyterians, most of whom had come from N.J. to Wash.Co., & thence to Knox Co., O., all except Thomas who had in 1791 m. Rhoda Poole & remained in Wash. Co., Pa. & near Hollidays Cove, W.Va. Jonathan Sr., served as a Sergeant in Capt. Phillip Phillip's Co. of N.J. troops, 1st. Regt. of Huntertown from May 10, 1777 to Sept. 20, 1777 & on Oct. 6, 1777 he was serving with Capt. Corle's Light Horse of Huntertown. The Hunt families of Hunt's Station, Knox Co. had their own private burial ground on their farm. The stones are still legible tho the place is badly neglected. Thomas Hunt (Rev. Thos.) graduated in 1806 from Jefferson College at Cannonsburg, Pa., Just 4 yrs. after Rev. John McMillan had made his "Log Cabin Academy" into Jefferson College. At the time Thomas had seven children. His younger brother Jonathan kept a tavern at Hunt's Station, also worked as a wagon maker & gunsmith. Rev. Thos. Hunt was licensed to preach Je. 30, 1808 after studying theology 1 yr. with Rev. John McMillan after graduation from Jefferson College. He was supply pastor at Wheeling, W.Va., Unity (now E.Palestine), Canton, Newark, & Delaware, O. All small groups could support was a supply pastor. Delaware wanted him full time but he decided to go to 2d. Presby. Church Pittsburgh, Pa. where he served 8 1/2 yrs. On May 20, 1819 he went to Two Ridges to serve Two Ridges & Richmond, O.
