Uriah H. L. Johnson HUNT (Uriah Hamilton Hunt) Birth: 7 Oct 1828 Washington Co., Tennessee Death: 28 Apr 1914 Washington Co., Tennessee Burial: Sulpher Springs, , Washington Co., Tennessee Family: F485 Parent's Fam: F484 Compiled by Felicia Gourdin I have a copy of an obituary for U.H. Hunt from a Washington Co., Tn. newspaper sent to me by Mrs. Lynn Cox Wright, of El Centro, Ca. It reads: U. H. Hunt was born in the same house where he died, October 7, 1828 (this undoubtedly, means his birthdate--F.K.G.), and departed this life April 28, 1914. His grandfather, Uriah Hunt, came to this place in 1786 and purchased all the land from the Isaac Galloway farm to the Walker farm, it being a part of North Carolina then. He owned slaves and always freed them at the age of 31 years. He was secretary of the first Missionary Baptist gathering in what is now Tennessee. He preached in the homes of the people, laying the foundation for a greater religious faith. He died in the same house in which the subject of this sketch died in 1824, or 90 years ago. U. H. Hunt was married to S. J. Kinchelow, April 7, 1857, and to this union were born twelve children, eight boys and four girls, viz. John, James, Judson, Jesse, Thomas, Joseph and U. L. J.; Mary, Martha, Achsa, and Amanda. Ten of the children are still living. John died in Texas some twenty years ago, and Mary about fourteen years ago. Joseph, Thomas and Judson live in Washington; James in Arizona; Jesse is a prominent preacher and educator of Union Mills, N.C.; Achsa lives in Virginia and the remainder live at or near the old homestead. Mr. Hunt lived to see all his children become Christians and members of the Baptist Church. In fact, the Hunt family has been noted for its intense religious zeal and they have taken the lead in religion and education. U. H. Hunt was director of schools in the 14th district some twelve years and always took an interest in education. He was well educated for a man of his day and used to lecture to the students of Morning Star on astronomy. He was superintendent of the Limestone Baptist Sunday School most of his life and was a member of that church 66 years. He died in the full triumph of the Christian faith and left to his children and acquaintances a legacy worth holding in fee. J. J. Deakins, Mrs. W. H. Hunt, Lura Archer, W. S. Squibb **NOTE** A Descendant, Betty Hughes, who lives on the old Uriah Hunt homeplace near Jonesboro, Tn., states his name was Uriah Hamilton and is so shown on census records. Uriah Hurd Lynn Johnson Hunt is, supposedly from a Bible record which was provided to Bill M. Hunt of Fairport, N.Y. by Velma Milburn, another descendant. (FKG) An article on his son, David Jesse, states that U.H.L. Johnson Hunt was a C.S.A. soldier. See article in my Uriah file.
