  • John Dail – Death Date: Oct 5, 1926
Prophetstown Echo - On Tuesday morning, Oct. 5th, John Dail, loved and respected friend and neighbor, and long time resident of Portland and Erie townships, passed from our midst to the home of the kind and faithful spirits.  We were not quite ready to part with him but we are comforted to know that he had for many years endeavored to live a life, which in itself, is the best preparation for the time of departing.  He had during the past months suffered a complete break down in health, though he seemed for many weeks to have made a wonderful recovery from a recent operation, and was able to walk about and greet his friends and enjoy their visits.  He has had every possible care and attention by his good wife and family as well as professional care, so that even his last days among us were marked with a large degree of comfort, contentment, and blessedness.  John Dail was the youngest of three sons, born to Nathaniel and Jane McNeill Dail.  His birth occurred on Dec. 15th, 1845, at Edingoosh, Ireland.  His parents were of Protestant faith, and at an early age John Dail was baptized by the Rev. Andrew Johnson at Edingoosh.   In the year 1850 Mr. Dail came with his parents and brothers to this country.  They came partly because of the advantages of this new country and partly because it was thought that the health of the mother would be improved by the change.  The journey was long and dangerous, and when the little family group arrived at St. Louis, by the way of the Mississippi river, Mrs. Dail passed to her heavenly home.  The father, and the three sons, Nathaniel Jr., Robert and John, continued their journey up the Mississippi to Fulton, Ill., and from that place the father and sons walked over land to Portland township, to the home of Mrs. Dail’s parents.  Land was homesteaded, and in that way the Dail homestead, so well known to all of us, was established.  Our deceased brother spent all his life in this community.  Thirteen years ago he left his farm in Portland township, and for about five years he lived on his farm in Erie township.  Eight years ago he became a resident of Erie, and has been very happy in our midst until the end.  On Oct 2nd, 1879, he was married to Florence Rosette Brown of Portland.  Last Saturday, Oct 2nd marked the completion of 47 years of a happy journey together of these good people.  God blessed this union with three sons, viz., Clarence O. of Evanston, Ill;  Dubert D., and Ellis J. of this community, also one daughter, Mrs. Jesse Elizabeth Houtsinger, Sterling, Ill., all of whom with the mother survive Mr. Dail.  There are also six grandchildren who found a very loving and enjoyable companion in their grandfather.  An elder brother Mr. Robert Dail also survives his brother.  Many years ago John Dail united with the United Brethren church.  He was a thoughtful, kind, and honest man.  His character has grown and ripened with the years; He was of a philosophical turn of mind, very interested in all the affairs of life, a lover of all good causes.  Thus, this man, who might with some degree of correctness be called a pioneer, has finished his pilgrimage of 80 yrs, 9 months and 21 days, leaving us the memory of an industrious and good life.  Funeral services were held Thursday from the Sharon church with burial in Sharon cemetery.  Rev. J. C. Yemm, pastor of the Erie M.E. church, conducted the service.  The music was rendered by Mesdames Feaster and Swederus with Miss Sussie Pierce, accompanist.  The bearers were John James, Frank Schaible, B.L. Pfundstein, Roy Cocking, Chas Feaster, and Z.D. Carney.  The remains were laid at rest in Sharon cemetery.

Prophetstown Echo - Oct 13, 1926; OLD RESIDENT BURIED - Funeral services for John Dail for 76 years a resident of Whiteside county, were held at the Sharon church Thursday afternoon.  He was born in Ireland and came to the United States with his parents when he was just a boy.  His mother died at St. Louis at the family was on the way up the Mississippi.  The father and three sons continued the trip landing at Fulton from where they walked overland, carrying their baggage to the farm of Mr. Dail's grandparents in Portland.  He was married Oct 2, 1879 to Florence Brown of Erie, who with four children survive.  Mr. and Mrs. Dail lived on the old homestead until eight years ago when they moved to Erie.

  • Johanna “Hannah” Marie (Ross) Swanson- Death Date: 05 Nov 1988

  • Esther Cecilia Swanson – Death Date: 10 Apr 1917
Prophetstown Echo, April 18, 1917 – MEMORIAL RITES FOR ESTHER SWANSON – Called While On Duty In Augustana Hospital. Sick About One Week.  Funeral Services Held Sunday In Lutheran Church.  The Floral Offerings Were Very Profuse.  Memorial services were held Sunday afternoon, commencing at three o’clock, in the Swedish Lutheran church, for the late Miss Esther Cecilia Swanson, the youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Swanson, who passed away on the 10th day of April 1917, in Augustana hospital, which hospital she had entered for the purpose of graduating as a nurse.  The services were opened with singing by the choir, which was followed by prayer by C. O. Carlson, of Augustana College, Rock Island, who spoke in the Swedish tongue.  Miss Esther Nelson then sang beautifully, a solo, when her pastor, Rev. Alfred Nelson preached in the Swedish language, a sermon which he previously outlined in English, that the audience might all have an idea of what was being said.  His sermon, judged by the outline, was full of admonition regarding the frailty of this life and the uncertainty of when the end would come to us, also how necessary that we all be prepared to meet the final Judge on the other shore.  In the obituary notice, which he read, he paid the deceased the high compliment of being a worker in the cause which should be nearest and dearest to us, that of the Christian religion.  Rev. Nelson had the pleasure of working with Miss Esther in the church and knew whereof he spoke when he said that she was ever conscientious and willing in the work of the Lord.  When Rev. Mr. Nelson had finished reading the obituary, the choir rendered another selection which added to what he had already spoken of her as Christian.   D.D. Supt of the Augustana  hospital of Chicago was present and spoke for about half an hour regarding what the Christian religion should mean to all of us, and why it behooves all to get in the way of the Lord in our living.  In his sermon he made it clear to his congregation that the whole object of life should be to so live that when the end came that it would not be death, but eternal life and happiness.  The speaker, among other things, said he was of the opinion that when the resurrection day came that we would, as here on earth, be recognized in our bodies.  He also plainly showed four different stages of our existence, in which we finally would enter our reward, and in all which to live was victory over death.  His sermon was in the way of an appeal and was logical and argumentative from the beginning.  Concluding his sermon, C.O. Larson read letters of condolence, and telegrams in which the deceased was paid the highest compliment as a lady of Christian character, devout in doing the work of ministering unto the sick and afflicted and in following the Great Example.  In all the true Christian character was made resplendent with good deeds.  The floral tributes were many and in their display completely hid from view the altar and were of nature’s most beautiful productions.  Short services at the cemetery concluded the memorial tribute to one whom many had learned to love and honor for the live she had lived.  The pallbearers were young men, friends of the deceased.  The following is the obituary as read, and also a poem written by Miss Nelson, an especial favorite of Miss Swanson’s  and whose esteem was appreciated by the writer. “Safe in the arms of Jesus, Safe on His gentle breast, There by His love o’er shaded, Sweetly my soul shall rest.”  After over one wee’s suffering of scarlet fever, Esther Cecilia Swanson departed from this life in peace to the rest in store for the people of God.  Esther, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Swanson was born here in Prophetstown, Jan 29, 1895.  The Christian baptism was administered to her March 17, the same year, and then became a child of God.  On the 9th of May 1909, she was confirmed here in our Lutheran church and to the confirmation vows has been faithful unto death.  In 1912 she graduated from the Prophetstown High School with honor.  The first of Oct. 1916 she entered the Augustana Hospital of Chicago as a nurse – where she now, the 10th day of April was called home to rest in the heavenly Mansion above.  At the age of 22 years, 2 months and 21 days.  She leaves to mourn her departure, her parents: Mr. and Mrs. Peter Swanson, sister, Mrs. Emma Dail, and three brothers, Earl, Carl, and John with their families and near relatives and a large circle of friends.  She was always loyal to her church, and took active part in all its branches of activity.  She was a great worker in the Sunday School and for some time organist of the church and a very active member in the Luther League.
    ”AWAY”
I cannot say, and I will not say
That she is dead – she is just away.
With a cheery smile and a wave of the hand,
She has wandered into an unknown land,
And left us dreaming how very fair
It needs must be, since she lingers there.
And you – O you who wildest years
For the old time step and the glad return
Think of her faring on, as dear in the love of There as the love of Here.
Mild and gentle as she was brave
When the sweetest love of her life she gave.
To simple things – Where the violets grew
Blue as the eyes they were likened to,
The touches of her hand have strayed
As reverently as her lips have prayed.
When the little brown thrush that harshly chirped
Was dear to her as the mocking bird.
Think of still as the same I say:
She is not dead – she is just away.
