October 18, 1921����.

William Crist
Highly respected resident of South Fifth street, died suddenly this morning at 10.20 while helping some men in the rear if his residence, saw wood. Mr. Crist had been ill of Bright's disease, but had been as well as usual this morning, with the exception of being some weaker. He fell dead without warning while lending a hand to the wood sawyers. He was aged 67 years, 10 months and 20 days. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at his late home, Rev. L. Stoy Spangler of St. Paul's Lutheran church, officiating. Interment in Newport Cemetery.

 

William M. Chauncey
William M. Chauncey for the past 8 years a resident of this city and during that time manager of the Singer Sewing Machine Company, died at his home No. 5 School street at 10 o'clock Thursday night, October 6. He was aged 53 years.
Mr. Chauncey was a popular and well known citizen during his residence in Bradford and his death will be regretted by a large circle of friends. He was a member of the odd Fellows lodge of Courtland, N.Y. and he is survived by his wife, Mrs. Katherine Robinson Chauncey and one son Amber C. Chauncey of Erie. The body was taken to Orley's undertaking parlors and prepared for burial.
Funeral services were held Saturday evening at 8 o'clock, the Rev. Dean Miller officiating. The body will be taken this morning to Liverpool, for interment.

 


March, 1935......

Mrs. William Hoffman
Mrs. Annie Elizabeth Hoffman Smith, wife of William H. Hoffman of East Newport, died Tuesday evening of last week, after being ill about five years of a complication and after being bedfast for 17 months. She was the daughter of Amos and ** (Croft) Smith and was born near Duncannon, being aged 64 years. Her first husband who died in 1914 was Harry Gamber. In addition to her husband, she is survived by three half-sisters; also the following children: Miss Minnie Hoffman of Newport; William Hoffman, Shermansdale; Martha, Mrs Howard Haines, Newport; Miss Catherine E. Hoffman, Brooklyn, N.Y., and Mrs Carl Burd at home.
Funeral services were held at the Kell funeral parlor. Interments was in Evergreen cemetery, Duncannon.

 


Sept 9, 1935............

Mrs James B. Henry
Mrs James B. Henry , aged 79 years, died at her home at McCoysville, Sunday morning, Sept. 28, of heart trouble after an illness of two weeks. Mrs. Henry resided at McCoysville since 1888, at which time she became a member of the United Presbyterian church of that place. Surviving her are two sons, Maurice R. of Ickesburg, and L. Roy of McCoysville, and four grandchildren, Florence and Helen Hyde, of Walnut N.C. and James and William Henry of McCoysville. Funeral services were held at the home Tuesday afternoon with her pastor, Rev. Myers, officiating. Burial was in the UP cemetery

 


August 1, 1937........

Mrs John H. HainesMrs Anna Bell Wagner Haines, 73, second wife of John H. Haines, of Altoona, who was a brother of Mrs. L. E. Smith, of Newport, died at her home Saturday, August 21 after being ill several months.

 


May 15, 1940...............

Charles F. Hockenberry
Charles F. Hockenberry, a Pennsylvania Railroad engineer, while at work at the Enola yards on Monday, collapsed and died almost instantly. He was a former resident of Perry County, and was a member of the Marysville Masonic Lodge.
Surviving him are his wife, Mrs Blanche S. Hockenberry; a son, James W., at home; two daughters, Mrs Elaine Hickman and Miss Towanda Hockenberry, both at home; a sister, Miss Orpha, of East Waterford; a half-brother, Merle Hockenberry of New Jersey, and two half-sisters, Mrs Edward Kyle and Miss Pearl Hockenbery, both of Long Island.
Funeral services will be held tomorrow (Thursday) at 3.15 at the funeral home, New Cumberland and burial will be in Mt Olivet cemetery.

 


June 12, 1940...........

Mrs C. D. Huss
Mrs. Effie Catherine Fosselman Huss, wife of Charles Dyson Huss, aged 59 years, died Sunday of last week at her home in Duncannon after several months illness. She as a daughter of John and Catherine (Rice) Fosselman and was born in Juniata township.
In addition to her husband she is survived by three brothers: John, Robert and Grant Fosselman, of Newport Route One. She was a member of the Milford Evangelical church. Services were Wednesday at the Myers Funeral Home. Interment in Newport cemetery.

 


June 26, 1940...........

Hon. William Hertzler
Former State Senator William Hertzler, 82, of Port Royal, died Sunday night, June 16, of a heart ailment in the Jefferson Hospital, Philadelphia. In poor health more than four years, Mr Hertzler had been a patient at the hospital a month.
He was a son of the late Noah and Susan Garman Hertzler and was born near Port Royal.
He is survived by one son, Penrose Hertzler, of Pottsville, chief counsel for the Philadelphia and Reading Coal and Iron Company, and former deputy attorney general.
Mr. Hertzler served as State Assemblyman from Juniata county from 1889 to 1890 and as State Senator from the Thirty-first District from 1897 to 1901. From 1902 to 1905 he was probate secretary of the late Congressman Thad M. Mahon and from 1905 to 1911 private secretary of the late Congressman Benjamin K. Focht.

  


March 12, 1941............

Lynn D. Hale
Lynn D. Hale, 26, of Harrisburg RD 2, died in the Polyclinic Hospital, Harrisburg, Monday evening of complications. He was a mechanic for the Motor Truck Equipment Company, Harrisburg, and was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose, Middletown. Surviving him are his wife, who was Miss Esther Motter,a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Warren Motter, formerly of Loysville and Oak Grove; three children, Doris, Roy, and Donald at home; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Hale, a brother, Glenn, and a sister, Mrs Horace Lenhart, Harrrisburg.
Funeral serices will be held on Thursday at 2 pm at the Fisher funeral home, Harrisburg. Rev. Dr. Lewis C. Manges of the Memorial Lutheran church, officiating. Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Dum of Elliottsburg, will attend the funeral. Mr. Dum serving as pallbearer.

 


March 18, 1942........

Mrs A. T. Holman Mrs Sarah Troutman Holman, widow of Adam T. Holman , died of a heart attack at the home of her brother in Pfoutz's Valley, Wednesday of last week. She was a sister of former County commissioner, E. T. Troutman of near Milllerstown, and the step-mother of Dr. A.L. Holman, and Maj. Edward L. Holman, Headmaster of Carson Long Institute.
Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon.

 


February 24, 1943........

Theodore M. Hull
Theodore M. Hull, aged 74 years, died at his home at Oak Grove, Spring township, Wednesday evening last week, following a week's illness.
Surviving him are these children: Richard Hull of Landisburg; Cloyd Hull of Oak Grove; Mrs. Abbie Cressler, Carlisle; Mrs. Margaret Bucher, Philadelphia; eight grandchildren and four brothers, Robert Hull of Phildelphia; William Hull, Carlise RD; Lewis Hull, Carlisle and Charles Hull of Chicago.
Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon in the Mt. Zion Lutheran church, conducted by the Rev. J.E. Stine of Carlisle and Rev. J. Grover C. Knipple, and burial was in Mt. Zion cemetery.

 


March 24, 1943......

W.W. Holman
Funeral services were held last Wednesday from the Liverpool Methodist church for William Willard Holman, 83, who died on March 15. Survivors are a half-brother, J. Park Holman of Liverpool, and a half-sister, Zella, Mrs. J. Harry Messersmith of Harrisburg. Mr. Holman's wife, Harriet Mausteller Holman, died several years ago. Their only son, Leigh, as a little lad was drowned while playing along the old canal.
Deceased was a merchant for many years, first with his father, Jacob Holman, and later with his brother retiring about ten years ago.

 


April 14, 1943......

Jesse Meredith Hawley
Mr. Jesse Meredith Hawley, son of Chester and Priscilla Hawley, died March 13, 1943, after several weeks illness at his home in Fillmore,Calif., where he had been superintendent of schools for several years.
He is survived by his wife, Helene and by a son, Jesse Jr., also by a sister, Mrs. A.A. Baker, of Stockton, Calif.
As a boy, Mr. Hawley made his home in Duncannon with his grandmother, the late Mrs. Annie B. Hawley, and Miss Mary E. Hawley, and with the late Mr. and Mrs. A. M. Scheibley

 


Feb 7, 1945......

Mrs. Oliver J. Hibbs
Mrs. Sara A. Hibbs, wife of Oliver J. Hibbs, Harrisburg R.D. 3, died Saturday in a Harrisburg hospital. In addition to her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Harry Belton, Duncannon, and Mrs. Lawrence Wagner, at home; two brothers, Jacob E. Williams of Progress, and David E. Williams, Newport, and a sister, Mrs. Martin D. Rowe, Newport. She was 60 years old.
Funeral services were held today and burial was in Shoops Church cemetery.
