GENERATION NO. 1

CONTINENTAL LINE MILITARY LAND GRANTS IN TENNESSEE

1. William1 Bashaw OR BESHAR was born about 1640 in of, Accomack, Virginia. He was the son of Giles Bashaw or BESHAR and Margaret GARRETT. William died in Northumberland, Virginia. His spouse has not been identified.

They had 6 children:

2. m i. Giles Jayles Bashaw OR BESHAR, born 20Apr 1675 in Northumberland County, Virginia.

3. f ii. Catherine Bashaw OR BESHAR, born 4Aug 1677 in Northumberland County, Virginia.

!VA. Colonial Abstracts for Accomack Co. VA. HBL Lib., Provo Ut. BK: F225.F58, Named in the birth register for Northumberland Co.,Va.,as child of William BESHAN [sic BESHAR?].

4. m iii. Andrew Bashaw OR BESHAR, born 7Mar 1679 in Northumberland County, Virginia. He married Sarah [------?------] about 1701 in of, Northumberland, Virginia. Notes for Sarah:

!This is the name of ANDREW BOWYER'S wife. Needs further proof to be conclusive.

Notes for Andrew:

!VA. Colonial Abstracts for Accomack Co. VA. [ HBL Lib., Provo Ut. BK: F225.F58]:

1637-1640...Virginia Colonial Records - Transcript pg 142 - original pg 188, from which the following record is abstracted. A certificate to Henry Bagwell for 400 acres for importing 8 persons Viz: William Whitehart; ANDREW BASHAWE (1- md to a Clayton) ; Michael Williams; John Clay; Tho Evans; Wm Powell; Richard Smith and MARY VAUGHN.

A will left by ANDREW BASHAW/BASHAR(2) in the BK "MARYLAND CALENDAR OF WILLS", must be for this ANDREW. There is an ANDREW BOWYER of record in Northumbria VA.,1645-1720. He lived in Wicco Parish and receive 500 acres of land from THOMAS BREWER, 1657/8. He was living in Lancaster Co VA. in 1662 where his wife SARAH, sued Sarah BISHOP in the courts. She was supposed to have alluded to SARAH BISHOP as a "Witch", In 1667 he sold 100 acres on Wicco Creek to Richard SPANN. Since BOWYER is a known [VA/PA], variation of BRASHEARS, it may prove out, this is ANDREW BASHAM also. [needs further research]

[William BRADSHAW/BRATCHER of Surry Co.,NC., was a close allie of a THOMAS BREWER]. The TAYLOR family, into which the BASHAWS/BASHAMS/BESHARS, [sic BRADSHAWS], married, moved along the same path of migration, viz: Northumberland Co.,VA., to Lancaster Co.,VA., [LANCASTER CO., VA., at that time covered both sides of the Rappahannock River and reached as far as civilization covered], and Fauquier Co. VA., before moving on into the Carolinas. The name of ANDREW BRASHER [sic], is prominent in the LAWRENCE CO.,TENNESSEE families. ALEXANDER and NATHAN BRESHEAR of record in Lawrenceburg TN., are probably descended from JAMES [1] BASHAM. [An Andrew BASHAW appears in Norfolk Co.,Va., records, date?]. HENRY ALEXANDER BRESHEARS is a probable descendant of THOMAS [1] BASHAW/BESHAR, ANDREW [1] BASHAW/BESHAR'S brother, probably through Thomas's son WILLIAM [2] BASHAW.

+ 5. m iv. Thomas Bashaw OR BESHAR, born 6Aug 1682.

6. f v. Sarah Bashaw OR BESHAR, born 6May 1684 in Northumberland County, Virginia.

!VA. Colonial Abstracts for Accomack Co. VA. HBL Lib., Provo Ut. BK: F225.F58. Sarah along with her siblings, JAYLES; CATHERINE; ANDREW; and THOMAS were named in the birth registers as children of WILLIAM BESHAN [sic BESHAR?].

+ 7. m vi. Peter Bashaw or BESHAR, born about 1685, died 1745.
1654... Hugh LEE 288 acres in Northumberland Co., 22 Apr 1654, p8, Abutting S.E. upon head of a swamp that cometh out of King's Cr. and N.E. towards land of John Mottrom Trans 6 persons viz: Edw. Perry, Joan Perry, Andrew Bashaw, William Bashaw, Jane Bashaw, and Mary Bashaw.

!1658...VA. Colonial Abstracts for Accomack Co. VA. HBL Lib., Provo Ut. BK: F225.F58: WILLIAM BASHAW was age 27 or th-abts on 17 Feb 1667. William BASHAW was bound to RALPH HORSELY to learn the trade of Tailor. Evidently RALPH HORSELY died as he is termed decd. 20 Sep 1658 and William is under the guardianship of JAMES HAULEY. [Pauley?]. On 5 Sep 1660 his sister [no name] claimed her portion of the father's estate. William was under her guardianship along with her husband ABRAHAM JOYCE. William had attained his majority by 21 Jul 1662 and was able to claim his portion of Gile BASHAW'S estate at that time.

16??...The Parish records of Northumberland Co., VA., document the birth of WILLIAM BASHAW'S children [as given on this lineage chart]. The name the family was using was BASHAN [R?], undoubtedly abstracted erroneously. The same children, named in William's sister's husband's will, Richard JARRETT [Garrett] in Somerset Co.,MD., were registered as BESHAR. [ Maryland Cal. of Wills, pg 70]. Peter was not named on the Northumberland Parish list of births but named in the Richard Jarrett's will, viz: Andrew, Joyles, Peter and Sarah. Various abstracts give the name as BESHAR, Bashar, Bashaw and BESHAW.

!1697...WILLIAM BASHAW'S land, "NORTHERN NECK VA.", 7 Oct 1697, 225 acres, was granted to one Henry DAWSON on Rudy (Muddy) Rudy Branch of Mattapony River in Northumberland CO., VA., Mr. DAWSON was resident on WILLIAM BASHAW'S land and orphans of Mr. Michael Vanlandegan, decd., also living there, 7 oct 1697.

The BASHAW name is virtually non-existent in the colonial records of Virginia, however we start picking up on a WILLIAM BRATCHER alias BRADSHAW [documented: Wills - Henrico Co., Va] who witnessed the will of CHARLES SUGGS [SCRUGGS], who was his father-in-law. Mentioned also with this WILLIAM BRADSHAW sic, was MARY HARDIN, presumably the wife of MARK HARDIN, [forefather of this researcher]. THOMAS BREWER is also closely allied to this WILLIAM BRADSHAW, and therefore is probably the same THOMAS, or the father of THOMAS BREWER, mentioned in the Surry Co, NC., records which cross reference the name BRACHER, BRATCHER alias BRADSHAW in his Will. [documented- Wills of NC - Surry? Co.] as being synonymous.

The JOHN ROBERTSON (s-i-l) who is closely allied to the BRADSHAWS, in the records, is a forefather [COLLINS] of this researcher. The ROBERTSON genealogy gives two ROBERTSON daughters as married to sons of WILLIAM BRADSHAW, and traces them to OLD BURKE CO.,NC. It will be remembered the name BRACHER and BRADSHAW are synonymous in this NC., county also and the descendants as named in the ROBERTSON genealogy are familiar names to this researcher. [see the ROBERTSON'S Will for this connection].

1783 ...North Carolina Land Grants in Tennessee: When the Cumberland River Kentucky [1783], land grants were issued, the survey crew that went into Kentucky and Tennessee with the surveyor JAMES ROBERTSON, included JOHN HARDIN and WILLIAM BRADSHAW. The BRADSHAW CREEK in GILES CO., TN., was named after this old pioneer. The Counties HARDIN, in both KY., and TN., were named after JOHN HARDIN and his descendants. Old WILLIAM BRADSHAW, who served [it appears] in the Continental Line as WILLIAM BRADSHAW and under the State of Virginia as WILLIAM BRAZER, is the probable person known as WILLIAM BREASHEAR, who left his will in Kentucky. In 1789. WM [BRAZER?], BRADSHAW and his brother THOMAS BRADSHAW [BRAZER?], are commemorated on a plaque in Nelson Co., KY., as pioneers on the TRANSYLVANIA TRAIL with Daniel BOONE. [Filson Club Qtrly, Vol ? pg?]. The name BREASHEAR does not appear.

1777...Thomas BREASHEAR who died in 1777, at Foreman's Defeat [of Hampshire County VA.], presumably is the same Thomas BRAZIER, of record in FILSON CLUB QTRY, who pioneered with William LINN in KY., as early as 1773. The Kentucky land warrants were issued to WILLIAM and THOMAS BRAZER [no BRADSHAWS extant in these State land Warrants].

GENERATION NO. 2

5. Thomas2 Bashaw OR BESHAR (1.William1) was born 6Aug 1682 in Northumberland County, Virginia. He married Ann [------?------] about 1700 in Somerset County, Maryland. She was born about 1682 in of, Norfolk, Virginia. Ann died in of, Somerset.

They had 6 children:

+ 8. m i. Garret Bashaw or BESHAR, born about 1702.

+ 9. m ii. Older William Bashaw or BESHAR, born 1702.

10. m iii. Thomas Bashaw OR BESHAR, Jr., born about 1710 in of, Somerset, Maryland, died in pro, Norfolk, Virginia.

!1730..."Maryland Calendar of Wills", pg 165, Will abstract for BUSHAW [BASHAW] Thomas: 16 Jan 1729/30; 20 Apr 1730. The wording in the will indicates sons "THOMAS the eldest, and THOMAS the younger", [both children of THOMAS BUSHAW. This family is closely allied to the ETHERIDGES, so it is possible this is the THOMAS BRASHER who appears closely allied to THOMAS ETHERIDGE in Lawrenceburg TN., or of ETHERIDGE TN., in the same county, and a little to the north of Lawrenceburg. [This connection is purely circumstantial at this point.]

Thomas Bashaw's will (son of Garrett BASHAW) , registered in Norfolk Co., VA., gives his wife as Mary and one son WILLIAM BASHAW is mentioned. Elizabeth ETHERIDGE witnessed the will. It is supposed Mary Bashaw is Mary ETHERIDGE, daughter of ELIZABETH ETHERIDGE that "BODDIE", referred to as marrying THOMAS BAYSHAW [sic]. Therefore this researcher is assigning THOMAS BAYSHAW [2] as spouse of MARY ETHERIDGE. Gr-dau of Elizabeth ETHERIDGE who also had a son who married a Stevens. Peter Bashaw was also in Norfolk Co., Va.- mid 1750s? !This connection is speculation at this point, but this is the only Henry that fits the profile we are looking for.

11. f iv. Anne Bashaw or BESHAR, born about 1712 in of, Somerset, Maryland.

!1730..."Maryland Calendar of Wills", pg165, Will abstract for BUSHAW [BASHAW] Thomas: 16 Jan 1729/30; 20 Apr 1730.

12. f v. Elinor Bashaw or BESHAR, born about 1714 in of, Somerset, Maryland.

!1730..."Maryland Calendar of Wills", pg165, Will abstract for BUSHAW [BASHAW] Thomas: 16 Jan 1729/30; 20 Apr 1730.

13. m vi. Younger William Bashaw OR BESHAR.
!I wonder if this could be the THOMAS BAYSHAW [sic BASHAW/BESHAR], who married daughter of ELIZABETH ETHERIDGE of Norfolk Co. VA. The time line will have to be checked here.[This ETHERIDGE Genealogy is in Mr. "BODDIE'S", set of books. I looked at them in Texas and have to find them again in SLC.] Another of her daughters married a JOHN STEVENS.[See JN STEVENS of Spartanburg Co., SC. ] ELIZABETH ETHERIDGE was sister to THOMAS ETHERIDGE, of Norfolk Co., VA., and it may be this family that married into the HENRY ALEXANDER BRASHEARS family of Lawrenceburg TN.

Inventory of estate for Graves Jarrett signed by Giles Basham and Thomas Basham (correct spelling), Northumberland Co., VA 1 Jun 1722.!

!1704 Nov 24th ...Richard Janett made a will and named BESHAR, Cousins in connection with his Plantation, "Hedgedom", in Somerset Co. Maryland. These siblings have the same given names as the children of WILLIAM BASHAN [sic], The Virginia Colonial Abstracts [BK# F225. F58, 1988], gives the name BASHAN for these siblings [undoubtedly an erroneous abstract of BASHAW/BASHAM?].

THOMAS BASHAW and his brother JOYLES [sic Giles?], along with Gravis JANETT were executors, of the will which was witnessed by THOMAS (Clayton?) LAYTON, FRANCIS LANDMAN and ANDREW CARLYLE. A daughter of GILES BASHAW must have been married to RICHARD JANETT. Possibly CATHERINE BASHAW. THOMAS BASHAW/BESHAR, removed to Somerset Co.,MD., from his birth place of NORTHUMBERLAND CO.,VA.

1729-30...THOMAS BUSHAW [alias BASHAW], made a will in Somerset Co.,MD. He gave his two eldest sons, viz: GARRET and WILLIAM BASHAW [BESHAR?], 100 acres of" HOGG DOWN", which he had bought from GILES BUSHAW [1]; and personality; if said sons should die without issue, said land to pass to younger sons. DANIEL CORBETT to live on said land for 5 years.

Son THOMAS and heirs, 100 acres, dwelling plantation; _________, said son dying without issue, to pass to youngest son WILLIAM; and personality.

Youngest son WILLIAM and heirs, 70 acres, adj to plantation bought from GRAVES JARRETT; said son dying without issue, to pass to son Thomas.

Wife ANN, extx., personality. [mother of the four youngest children???]. four youngest children viz: THOMAS, WILLIAM, ANNE and ELINOR, residue of estate after wife's thirds are deducted. TEST: DANIEL CORBETT; JOHN COLLINS [Collince], THOMAS GOSLEE. [JOHN COLLINS could be a very significant collateral connection for GEORGENE, the COLLINS; WISDOMS and GIBSONS removed to PITTSYLVANIA CO., VA and CASWELL CO., NC abt 1756. It could be a son of this THOMAS BAYSHAW [sic BESHAR], and THOMAS ETHERIDGE, of Norfolk Co.,VA., [Boddie], who we are trying to identify in TN., who are being so elusive. We need to know the connection if any to, THOMAS BRASHER and THOMAS ETHERIDGE who were early pioneers in the Cherokee nation and probably had descendants in Lawrence Co, TN.

The BRASHERS who are [alias BASHAW/BASHAM], of record in Lawrence Co. TN., trace back to old Bedford Co. Virginia. There was a JAMES [Jr.], BASHAM and MARY BASHAM [born abt 1760], who had sons OBEDIAH and NATHAN, from that County. I wonder if this could be JAMES BRASHER and wife MARY JANE [TURNER?], BRASHER, parents of ALEXANDER and NATHAN BASHAM/BRASHER born abt 1804 of LAWRENCE CO., Lawrenceburg TN. [With land claims on Sugar Creek TN., as heirs of JAMES BRADSHAW sic BASHAM/BRASHER?].

7. Peter2 Bashaw or BESHAR (1.William1) was born about 1685 in Of, Accomack, Virginia. Peter died 1745 in Westmoreland, Virginia. He married Mary WARNER 1734 in Virginia. Mary died in Westmoreland, Virginia.

They had 6 children:

+ 14. m i. James Bashaw [BASHAM], born 14Aug 1733, died 1778.

15. f ii. Elizabeth BASHAW, born 1733 in Of, Westmoreland, Virginia.

+ 16. m iii. Peter Bashaw OR BESHAR, born about 1735, died 6Dec 1779.

17. m iv. Warner Bashaw [BESHAR], born about 1739 in Of, Westmoreland, Virginia.

18. f v. Mary Bashaw [BESHAR], born about 1740 in Of, Westmoreland, Virginia.

19. f vi. Elizabeth BASHAW, born about 1741 in Of, Westmoreland, Virginia. She married William COLLINS about 1756 in Of, Virginia. He was born about 1736 in Orange County, Virginia. He was the son of Joseph COLLINS and Susanna LEWIS. William died 29Feb 1792 in Camden, Kershaw, South Carolina. Notes for William:

!William Collins married ELIZABETH BASHAW, who was probably a descendant of WILLIAM BASHAW/BESHAR, [sic BRADSHAW /BRACHER /BRATCHEY?, of MATTAPONY River in Northern Neck Va, a probable sister or near relative of, WILLIAM BRESHEAR b 1740 in Fauquier Co.,Va. Spartanburg Co.,SC., with descendants to Lawrenceburg TN.? Theory only at this point [1991], but looking probable...HOORAY!!!].

Notes for Elizabeth:

!Probable descendant of WILLIAM BESHAR/BASHAW of Northern Neck, Fauquier Co. Va. This connection confirmed by webpage at (insert).

GENERATION NO. 3

8. Garret3 Bashaw or BESHAR (5.Thomas2, 1.William1) was born about 1702 in of, Somerset, Maryland. He married Elizabeth ETHERIDGE. She was born in of, Norfolk, Virginia. She was the daughter of Adam ETHERIDGE and Elizabeth [------?------] .

They had 2 children:

+ 20. m i. Thomas Bashaw or BESHAR, born about 1725, died 16Mar 1781.

21. f ii. Elizabeth Bashaw or BESHAR.

Elizabeth ETHERIDGE, sister of THOMAS ETHERIDGE SR. had a son in-law Garrett BAYSHAW [sic BASHAW?], who's son was Thomas BASHAW or BESHAR of Somerset Co.,MD., and Norfolk Co., VA.

ADAM ETHERIDGE: His will dated April 18, 1735 and probated in Norfolk County May 17, 1735 (D.Bk.l2, p.85; McIntosh, Vol.11, p.164), leaves to his wife Elizabeth land in Paspatank in Albemarle Co., North Carolina; to son Levy; to daughters Lydia and Elizabeth ETHERIDGE; and mentions my wife and three children on Jul 14, 1743, Levi ETHERIDGE, formerly of Norfolk County, deeded to Thomas Talbutt 66 acres on Tanner's Creek, 2/3 of 100 acres bought by Adam ETHERIDGE of Thomas Mason, and given by Adam to his son Levi (D.Bk.l.,pp.77/8). This deed would indicate that Levi ETHERIDGE was just of age, and born ca 1722 (he does not appear in the tithables through 1736); also, that he had moved away, probably to North Carolina. There must have been some question about this deed, for his mother, Elizabeth ETHERIDGE, sued Levi ETHERIDGE Sept.16 and Nov. 8, 1743, and March 16, 1743/4 (0. BK. 1742-6, pp. 47, 50, and 58).

The widow is apparently the Elizabeth ETHERIDGE who appears in 1751 in the borough of Norfolk with three Negroes as tithables. On Oct.18, 1753, Zachariah Mason deeded to Elizabeth ETHERIDGE of 175 acres that was divided, being given by Thomas Mason in his will, to his son George Mason, father of Zachariah (D.Bk.16, p.168), and Elizabeth appears in 1754 with three Negroes as tithables on the north side of Tanner s Creek; and again in 1767 with three negroes and 60 acres. She died in 1768. The will of Elizabeth ETHERIDGE dated Jan. 23, 1764 and probated May 19, 1768 (W. BK. l, p.l75) mentions her grand-daughter Mary Creech; grandson Thomas Bayshaw ; son Levi ETHERIDGE; grand-daughter Elizabeth Bayshaw; grandchildren Lydia, William, and Elizabeth Stevens; and appoints her friend Edward Portlock and Thomas Bayshaw executors. The will would indicate that one of her daughters married a Bayshaw and one a Stevens on June 16, 1768, Levi ETHERIDGE was summoned to contest the will of Elizabeth ETHERIDGE, but was judged by the Court to be non compos mentis (0.BK.1766-8, page 190). The appraisal of Elizabeth ETHERIDGE, decd., was handed in May 18, 1770 (O.Bk. 1768-71, p.l68).

Issue of Adam ETHERIDGE #14 and his wife Elizabeth:

#67 Levi ETHERIDGE, b. ca 1722. #68 Lydia ETHERIDGE, m. a Bayshaw or Stevens #69 Elizabeth ETHERIDGE, m. a Bayshaw or a Stevens.

THOMAS ETHERIDGE #15 (William, Thomas), was born ca 1675-80, and died 1750 in Norfolk County. He married Ann (surname unknown), who died in 1752, administration on Ann ETHERIDGE, decd., being granted to Samuel ETHERIDGE (her son) Aug. 21, 1752 (0.BK.1750-53, p. 95). The Quitrent Roll of 1704 for Norfolk Co. shows Thomas ETHERIDGE, cooper, with 75 acres of land (Va. Mag. of Hist. and Biog., Vol.30, p.23). On July 9, 1724, Thomas ETHERIDGE was granted 325 acres of land (Pat.Bk.12, p.109), and on Sept.28, 1726 he was granted another 143 acres of escheat land (Pat.Bk.13, p.329). On Nov.4, 1724, Thomas ETHERIDGE "ye Elder" deeded 10 ac. to George Newton; the deed was signed by Thomas and Ann ETHERIDGE and was witnessed by his brother Adam ETHERIDGE (Bk.F, p.119). On Nov.19, 1724, Thomas ETHERIDGE, cooper, deeded 66 acres to John ETHERIDGE, 91 acres to Adam ETHERIDGE (i.e. his brother), and 66 acres to Thomas ETHERIDGE Jr., his wife Ann signing the deeds (Bk.F, pp. 125, 127, and 158). John ETHERIDGE, the grantee, was a son of John ETHERIDGE (#20) and grandson of John ETHERIDGE (#3). Thomas ETHERIDGE Jr., the grantee, seems to have been the son of Thomas ETHERIDGE (#21) and also a grandson of John ETHERIDGE (#3). The will of Thomas ETHERIDGE, "well struck in age", dated Dec.31, 1750 and probated April 16, 1752 (Bk.I, p.243; McIntosh, Vol.11. Note: Sorry but I did not copy the next page. However, I have filed some more of this book that I copied at a later date and if you are unable to locate the books, I will send the info when I locate it. Cheers Georgene.

*** JOHN COLLINS [Georgene's ancestor], appearing as closely allied to this family is circumstantial evidence of family affiliation - GH ***!Named in his fathers will ["Maryland Calendar of Wills",pg 165].

Dear Georgene, You know I told you I would help you with your Bashaw line out of Norfolk Co., VA. Since we last corresponded, I have found some data that might help you. I believe it is possible that you are on the right track with them. As you know, Garrett Bashaw (son of Thomas, (the first) out of Somerset Co., Maryland) md the dau of Elizabeth ETHERIDGE. Garrett Bashaw and wife had a son, Thomas Bashaw who wrote his will in Norfolk Co. 1789, probated 16 Mar 1781. Thomas names his wife, Mary, and one son William...then mentions other children (but not by name). Here is some marriages I found that names might mean something to you. In Princess Anne Co., VA (which is located next to Norfolk): William BESHAW md. Elizabeth Fitzgerald 2 mar 1796. I believe this is the son, William mentioned in the will. Apparently the widow of Thomas got md again and the following marriage is her: Mrs. Molly Bashaw md. in Norfolk to John Harvey 28 Apr 1791. You will notice she did not wait long after Thomas' will was probated...this was not unusual in that day. Elizabeth Bashaw md. 28 June 1794 to William Williams in Norfolk. (the one who wits. Thomas' will??) John BESHAW md. in Norfolk Co., to Frances Millison 31 Mar 1798. (could be another son of Thomas). Henry (Harry) md. in Norfolk Co., to Mrs. Fanny Hill June 5, 1816. (since she was a widow it may have been a second marriage for him also?) I do not believe that Garrett Bashaw and wife ___ ETHERIDGE had but the one son as I have record of him going back to Somerset Co., Maryland to settle his father's part of the property that had been in the family for over 100 years. I believe you are on the right track with this clan of BASHAWS (and their name spelling got changed, but not really drastic) as no other records have been found for them elsewhere. I will keep my eye out for you for them. As you probably know NC is a hard state to research....My husband and I both have some lines going into early NC. Best regards, Mary E. Price.

9. Older William3 Bashaw or BESHAR. Also seen as William BRATCHER & BRADSHAW (5.Thomas2, 1.William1) was born 1702 in of, Somerset, Maryland. He married Judith SCRUGGS or SUGGS about 1717 in Henrico County, Virginia. She was born 1702 in of, Henrico, Virginia. She was the daughter of Charles SCRUGGS [SUGGS] and Mary FIELD.

They had 9 children:

22. f i. Temperence BRADSHAW, born 1718 in Henrico County, Virginia. She married Wiltshire MARRIN(PERRIN) about 1737 in Of, Henrico, Virginia. He was the son of Gilly Groom MARRIN.

23. m ii. Charles BRADSHAW, born 1719 in Henrico County, Virginia. He married Jemimah HENDRICKS about 1752 in Cumberland Co, VA.

Charles died 23Jun 1761 in Cumberland, Virginia, at the age of 42.

24. m iii. Josiah BRADSHAW, born 1721 in Henrico County, Virginia. He married Elizabeth ARMISTEAD 20Dec 1763 in Cumberland, Virginia. She was born about 1734 in Henrico County, Virginia.

Josiah died about 1820 in Lincoln, North Carolina.

Notes for Josiah:

Josiah Bradshaw is seen with the "Basheen" (Breshear) clan in middle Tennessee after the Indian removal (Middle Tennessee Tax Records). His father was William Bradshaw who married Elizabeth HARPER in his senior years. This William left records in the courts of Overtan County TN, as his son Josiah contested the William Beach claims to the estate.

!VA. Colonial Abstracts for Accomack Co. VA. HBL Lib., Provo Ut. BK: F225.F58. !Book "This Family ROBINSON [sic ROBERTSON]", by John E. ROBINSON, GS BK # 929.273 R563J, gives us the tie between the "OLD RAPPAHANACK RIVER settlers and the HENRICO CO., VA., settlers who migrated to the WATAGUA RIVER AREA to take up land in the mid 1700s. Old Burke Co.,NC., was formed from this settlement and included the pioneers [BRADSHAW/BRATCHER and ROBINSON/ROBERTSON] families who pioneered to Spartanburg CO.,SC, the old Washington [east Tennessee colony], CO.,VA.,[HOLSTON/CLINCH RIVER], settlers who moved on into KY., and TN.,beginning about 1783 when the land warrants were issued belatedly, for the North Carolina soldiers and the US Continental Line Military warrants. The spelling of the names for these old Revolutionary War veterans were spelled variously, depending upon whether they were state or Federal veterans. Thus the same soldier who served both areas may have been documented as two different men according to the way the name was spelled on the military rolls.

See James Bradshaw, a Mechlenburg Signer of Mechlenburg Co., NC. Others included of Mechlenburg County; The Balchs; Bradshaws, Whites, Wisdoms, and John Alexander who are probably those families who removed through Spartanburg SC & East TN. The records of Lawrenceburg TN show land transactions between these families.

...1800, James BRADSHAW Enumeration # 54. Also a James Bradshaw was in Hathwood Co., NC., 1800, Enu # 2 - This could be the James Bradshaw of Rowan County since Burke County was separated out of Rowan in 1777. I suspect this James Bradshaw is the James Bradshaw with the Court case in Lawrenceburg TN along with the Balchs and John White and may be the James Bratcher of NC Rev. War service.

1800...WILLIAM BREASHEAR of Burke County NC., is enumerated on the1800 census , Enu # 6 and 26. This is the same person as WILLIAM BRACHER/BRADSHAW. This looks suspiciously as though it may be the same person who received land grants under the name BRADSHAW.

1800...There are several unidentified Bradshaw alias BRASHER men in Burke Co., NC., who must be descendants viz:

1820...William BRACHER SR., is listed on the US Census of Burke Co., NC, who is probably the same person as WILLIAM BRADSHAW, [or his son], receiving a grant # 5388 En # 4500; BK # 138; Pg 243; 25 Acres, 30 Nov 1829. [This could be Jr. now Sr. if his father was deceased].

*** The Humphries connection from CASWELL and Persons County NC.***

1784...9 Nov, Robert HUMPHRIES received 200 acres grant # 778; BK # 57;

Pg 3; entered Aug 1778. Location is both sides Cove Creek. Also received grant # 848; En # 637; BK # 57; 200 acres - Pg 37.

1784...WILLIAM HUMPHRIES...16 Sep., both sides Silver Creek. Grant # 5355; En # 9373; BK # 138; Pg 146; 100 acres dated 13 Oct 1827.

The George Humphries Clan removed from Spotsylvania County Virginia also and have descendants who removed through Cumberland County NC., and CASWELL County NC., with a relative John Humphries who married a BREASHEAR and settled in what later became Humphries County Tennessee.

Note: Mr. Andreas in his Greenville SC., Report on Brashears mentioned "They probably came from Rutherford County NC.", well - Rutherford was taken from Burke and Tryon Counties in 1779 - so there we have them - right?

!Named in his fathers will. ["Maryland Calendar of Wills",pg 165]. Thomas named William as one of two eldest sons, then named a William as one of his four younger children. [confusing?]This WILLIAM BESHAR is a good candidate to be the forefather of Henry Alexander Breshear. He may be the same person as William Bushire of Old Augusta Co., Va.

!1730..."Maryland Calendar of Wills", pg165, Will abstract for THOMAS BUSHAW [BASHAW], 16 Jan 1729/30; 20 Apr 1730. The wording in the will indicates the sons , "WILLIAM, eldest, and WILLIAM younger", A possibility is that Thomas was raising another family [a brother's?]. The research indicates this is the alternate connection for the Henrico Co., VA., William BRATCHER born abt 1746.

!1658...VA. Colonial Abstracts for Accomack Co. VA. HBL Lib., Provo Ut. BK: F225.F58 - WILLIAM BASHAW was age 27 or th-abts on 17 Feb 1667. William BASHAW was bound to RALPH HORSELY to learn the trade of Tailor. Evidently RALPH HORSELY died as he is termed decd. 20 Sep 1658 and William is under the guardianship of JAMES HAULEY [PAULEY?]. On 5 Sep 1660 when his sister claimed her portion of the estate, William was under her guardianship along with her husband ABRAHAM JOYCE. William had attained his majority by 21 Jul 1662 and was able to claim his portion of Gile BASHAW'S estate at that time. [ XCK: Hauley may be Pauley]

16??...The Parish records of Northumberland Co., VA., document the birth of WILLIAM BASHAW'S children. The name the family was registered as using was BASHAN [R?]. The same children, named in his sister's husband's will, Richard JARRETT [GARRETT], in Somerset Co., MD., were registered as BESHAR.

!1697...WILLIAM BASHAW owned land in "NORTHERN NECK VA.", 7 Oct 1697. 225 acres granted to one HENRY DAWSON on [MUDDY?] RUDY BRANCH OF MATTAPONY RIVER in NORTHUMBERLAND CO., VA., Mr. DAWSON was resident on WILLIAM BASHAW'S land and the orphans of Mr. Michael VanLANDEGAN, decd., were also living there, 7 Oct 1697.

1700...He could be the gr-father of the "old & in firmed WILLIAM BREASHEAR who died 1789," of Bullitt Co., Kentucky.

1786...4 Dec 1786. It is his gr-son who may be the WILLIAM BRASURE b 1740 who received 240 acres in Dist. 96, SC., situated above the Ancient boundary line on a branch of REEDY RIVER. This was in the Indian nation. This WILLIAM BRASURE, seen in the Continental line records as WILLIAM BRADSHAW [alias BRATCHER/BRACHER], and in the State land grant records as WILLIAM BRACKER, [see under son WILLIAM].

14. James3 Bashaw [BASHAM] (7.Peter2, 1.William1) was born 14Aug 1733 in of, pro Fauquier, Virginia. James died 1778 in Davidson County, Tennessee, at the age of 44. He married Francis TAYLOR 21Mar 1762 in Fauquier County, Virginia. She was born 15May 1744 in of, Fauquier, Virginia. She was the daughter of Benjamin TAYLOR. Francis died 13Oct 1825 in of, Davidson, Tennessee, at the age of 81, and was buried in Near Nashville, Tennessee.

They had 7 children:

31. f i. Betsca BASHAW, born 28Jan 1765 to parents who, at the time, resided in Fauquier, Virginia.

32. f ii. Frances BASHAW, born 27Mar 1767 to parents who, at the time, resided in Fauquier, Virginia.

33. f iii. Sally BASHAW, born 20Apr 1769 to parents who, at the time, resided in Fauquier, Virginia.

34. m iv. Benjamin B. BASHAW, born 10Aug 1771 in Fauquier County, Virginia, died 28Jan 1835, at the age of 63.

+ 35. m v. James BASHAM [BRAZIER], Jr., born about 1757.

36. f vi. Nancy BASHAW, born 22Apr 1777 to parents who, at the time, resided in Fauquier, Virginia.

+ 37. m vii. Peter BASHAW, born 31Mar 1763, died 20May 1864.

!The family genealogies for the TAYLOR FAMILY are in the WILLIAM AND MARY QUARTERLY and VIRGINIA HISTORICAL MAGAZINE. The family of James BASHAM are documented interchangeable as BASHAW and /or BASHAM. The "AIS",Search #1, shows BASHAM/BASHAWS of Bedford Co. VA., only. It makes one wonder why? One possible answer could be their service during the American Revolution. If they remained loyal to BRITAIN, they may have changed their last name after the Revolution.

We know NATHAN BRASHER alias BASHAM and BASHAW, of Lawrence Co. TN was born in Georgia [may have been in the 12 mile strip that composed SC stretching from SC to the Mississippi in the time period he was born]. Most of the British Loyalist Grants were in the area of the Mississippi Territory that later became Georgia.

...(missing info?) Agnes (Davies) Bradshawe, proven: From Dr. Bashaw's papers: " There were three brothers (French Huguenot) who left France during the time of the Catholic persecution of the Huguenots (1640ish-GH). They came first to Canada and later went to Virginia. Note by GH; this must be Andrew, William & Giles Bashaw/Bradshawe.

Three generations beginning with James & Francis Bashaw are copied from an old memorandum book, beginning in 1733. It has a leather back & evidently home made. It has been in the family several generations. The spelling is as it appears in the old book in Dr. Bashaw's record, in some places the researcher has placed varied spellings in parenthesis. The record began in Culpeper & Fauquier Co., VA. of which later branches moved to Tennessee near Nashville

!1762...Mar 20: "Benjamin TAYLOR gave consent for his Daughter FRANCIS'S marriage of FAUQUIER CO VA. to JAMES BASHAM, [The magazine gives the name as BASHAM], VA. Historical Magazine, Vol?.,pg 310-GH]

NO DATE...Presumably 1762...[William and Mary Qrtly] Taylor Genealogy gives "Francis TAYLOR, another daughter of BENJAMIN TAYLOR, married James BASHAW (correct spelling), of Fauquier Co County, VA.". The name is given as "BASHAW' in the quarterly. This is obviously the same couple registered in these two VA., magazines, above-GH.

There is extensive TAYLOR GENEALOGY in both these magazines, if it turns out we need to pursue TAYLORS. In light of the fact that the LAWRENCEBURG TN.,BASHAMS were alias BRASHER [sic BRACHER, {"CH"as in chin}, alias BRADSHAW/BASHAW], it may be a line of descendancy-GH.

The "Accelerated Index System",search #1, 1600-1819, gives only the BEDFORD CO.,VA., clan of BASHAM and/or BASHAW. This surname was not a prolific one in that time period. The Accomack and Northumberland Co. VA., records do list the descendants of GILES and WILLIAM BASHAW, not documented on the "AIS". The ANDREW BRADSHAWE who lived there, must be the ANDREW BESHAR, son of WILLIAM BASHAW or BESHAR or his Uncle-GH .

1783...North Carolina Land Grants in Tennessee, BK. pg ?, gives us the location of JAMES BRADSHAW'S Continental Line Land Grant. He was allocated a grant on Sugar Creek [Lawrence Co., TN.?]. The grant names AMAS BALACH and JOHN WHITE as his co-grantees. A court record of Lawrence Co. Tn.?, deals with the lands which indicates JAMES BRADSHAW was deceased and AMOS BALACH and JOHN WHITE receive his share viz: INSERT HERE-GH.

NOTE: JAMES BASHAW appears to be JAMES BRADSHAW who moved from FAUQUIER CO VA. to SC(William & Mary Quarterly) and may be JAMES BRAZIER of CUMBERLAND CO. NC. The DAR lineage papers [from family records], place JAMES BASHAW [1] with death place as DAVIDSON CO., TN. We know the BASHAM and BASHAWS were in Lawrenceburg TN. as documented in the Co., Court records-GH.

In trying to identify the young ALEXANDER and NATHAN BASHAM who appear to be alias BRASHER, who receive land from the grant of AMOS BALACH and JOHN WHITE, we wonder what the tie is? It is probable they may be uncles?, Spouses of their grandfather's daughters, looking after their interests as heirs in right of their father-GH.

***** THOUGHTS ON MIGRANTS TO MECKLENBURG CO NORTH CAROLINA *****

[Spartanburg SC., Lawrenceburg TN., and Benton/Polk Co., MO.-by GH]

1666-1670...Accomack and Annamassex Co., Va., were settled about these yrs. Their leader was Stephen HORSLEY who died there in 1772. William BASHAW son of Giles BASHAW [2], was closely affiliated with the HORSELY family [apprenticed ?].

The descendants of these early colonizers ,as documented in the early records of the HARRISES and ALEXANDER families, are those who migrated up the Chesapeake Bay, coastal Counties {Maryland's Eastern Shore} and who are found nested in and around Big & Little Elk and Bohemia Rivers MD/PA.. This area is divided by the MASON & DIXON LINE, Cecil Co., MD.,and Chester Co., PA. The Bradshaws who were alias BRAZIER in the OLD AUGUSTA CO VA/PA., records are undoubtedly descendants of Giles BRADSHAWE or BASHAW who colonized Accomack Co., Va.,and died 1622.

Other forebearers associated with the MECHLENBURG SIGNERS in NC., are families found a half century earlier where they settled in the JAMES TOWN section of Virginia. Some had removed to the South side of the JAMES RIVER, along the ELIZABETH RIVER in NORFOLK, Bays and inlets of NANSEMOND COUNTY, and like those who remained in ACCOMACK, for some time, joined the migration to ANNAMASSEX and POCAMOKE RIVER VA.

Some of them had come from IRELAND, straight out "Irish", and some Scotch-Irish who settled the Eastern and Western shore of Virginia [and counties north on the Chesapeake Bay]. These families in migrating to NC., touched in old Fauquier and Augusta CO., Va., as they left obscure tracks for us to trace. It is interesting to note that the colonists who removed to MECKLENBURG CO., NORTH CAROLINA, FOR THE MOST PART CAN TRACE THEIR ROOTS TO THESE THREE AREAS.

The Names of families associated with the Spartanburg South Carolina and Lawrenceburg Tennessee BRESHEARS families are: GIBSON; COLLINS; HUMPHRIES; HARRIS; BARRY; EWING; ALEXANDERS; MOORES; CALDWELLS; CUNNINGHAMS; WILSON; POWELL; and WATSONs to name a few, who were from the eastern shore of Maryland and Accomack Co., VA., North to old CHESTER CO., PA., [along the Susquehanna River & tributaries], and then on into NC.

The religious leaders on the eastern shore of Va., and the counties along western Chesapeake Bay began to sow fertile seeds of Liberty and religious freedom that took firm root in the minds of the HORSLEY followers along the Annamassex and Pocomoke Water ways. The preaching of FRANCIS McKEMIE; GEORGE McNISH; JOHN HAMPTON and REV. JOHN THOMPSON [Humphries ancestor] fanned the tiny flames of human hopes implanted earlier along the Eastern Shore of Maryland, which finally burst forth between the YADKIN AND CATABWA rivers of North Carolina in 1775.

The MECKLENBURG DECLARATION OF INDEDPENDENCE was born. The faded names along the rivers POCOMOKE, SNOWHILL and MONIKINS of Eastern Shore Maryland tally perfectly with the signers of this declaration of North Carolina.

From the "NORTHAMPTON ENGAGEMENT" and the "NORTHAMPTON PROTEST", both signed by HORSELY before this migration occurred, and from the tythe lists of NORTHAMPTON CO.,VA., in 1666, we cull many of the names that went with Stephen HORSLEY, because they lived and died in SOMERSET CO MD., leaving sons and daughters , who are later found in the records of CECIL, TALBOT, KENT and DORCHESTER COUNTIES MD., further North into PA., and finally to MECKLENBURG CO. , NC., [between the YADKIN & CATAWBA RIVER].

Some leaders of Annamassex and Pocomoke area who removed colonies to North Carolina were WILLIAM DURANT [father of George, of Durant's Neck, already in NC] who led 300 to the inlets of the CHOPTANK RI. WILLIAM STONE, once a Puritan leader, and Sheriff of Northampton Co., VA., [from whence came WILLIAM BASHAW/BESHAR], was appointed GOVERNOR of St. Mary's, Parish and carried followers with him to MARYLAND, among whom were the HARRISONS, who like himself had come from NORTHAMTONSHIRE, ENGLAND.

The descendants in MECHLENBURG CO., NC., were those children whose forebearers had been scourged through long centuries by the nine-tails of tyranny, in quest of religious freedoms and liberty of action and had exiled themselves to the Eastern shore of Maryland, among the islands and inlets of it's rugged coast, where they were found and encouraged by the Rev FRANCIS McKEMIE, TO hope for devine aid in an eventual political emancipation. These children and children's children, were encouraged through long periods of intrigue and scheming by the CALVERTS and BERKLEYS, to hang on for dear life, as they clung to hope, many times to outwit the overlords, and at times, to know what it was to wield the balance of power for their beloved MARYLAND.

Their sons were educated at PRINCETON [England], under very adverse conditions and made them LEADERS AND TEACHERS among their kind. They improved their own circumstances at every opportunity and kept an eye on the vast open spaces of the WEST AND SOUTH for the benefit of their posterity. As the lands became available in Old Augusta Co., Va., they are found in & on the western frontier, the SURNAME BRADSHAW as found on the Eastern shore, spelled phonetically in these old records became, BRAZER; BRAZIER; BRUSHIER: BROSHEAR; BUSHER; BASHAW; BRATCHER. Deep roots became even more tangled as the North Carolinian records of Burke Co., NC, documented them as spelled BRATCHER; BRACHER and BRASHER.

The SPARTANBURG SOUTH CAROLINA records with proven documentation, record the William & Sarah BRADSHAW family and descendants as BRATCHER; BRACHER and BRESHEAR. [BREASHEAR} as they sold land in that county.

By looking carefully at the CONTINENTAL line grants and comparing them to the county record, which was spelled as the DESCENDANT who removed to LAWRENCE CO., TN., was spelling it in his GENERATION, you can determine the change of spelling between the generations.

16. Peter3 Bashaw OR BESHAR (7.Peter2, 1.William1) was born about 1735 in Of, Westmoreland, Virginia. Peter died 6Dec 1779 in Leeds Parish, Fauquier, Virginia. He married Celia Mrs. BASHAW in Northumberland County, Virginia.

They had 6 children:

38. m i. Peter Bashaw [BESHAR], born to parents who, at the time, resided in Westmoreland, Virginia.

39. f ii. Mary or Molly BASHAW.

40. m iii. Rawleigh Chinn BASHAW. He married Sarah KEMPER 2Oct 1794 in Fauquier, Virginia. She was born to parents who, at the time, resided in Fauquier, Virginia. She was the daughter of Jacob KEMPER.

41. m iv. Elijah BASHAW.

This must be Elijah Braisier who was of record in Fauquier Co., VA., tax lists 1800. The Elizabeth who was recorded as a widow, 1800, must be related. I would venture a guess that this is either the Elijah who removed to Cumberland County NC, or a parent.

42. f v. Betsey BASHAW.

43. f vi. Sukey BASHAW.

No Date...Records of Westmoreland Co., VA (Dr. Bashaw's Papers), gives the following children of Peter (1) Bashaw: Warner, James, Peter [2], Elizabeth and Mary.

!The name Peter BASHAW [3] is of record [DAR #?] in Middle Tennessee land grants. The Peter BASHAW who claimed that land, was a descendant of JAMES AND FRANCIS TAYLOR BASHAW/BASHAM, of Fauquier Co. VA. It is possible James could be a descendant of PETER BASHAW [1] who died in 1745 and left a will in Westmoreland Co.,VA. PETER BASHAW [3] son of JAMES is known to have lived in Fauquier Co. VA. and served in the Revolution as a mercenary, giving service for others less willing to serve, it is probable he is the eldest son of JAMES and may have been named after his grandfather PETER BASHAW [1] PETER BASHAW [3] s/o JAMES died in Davidson Co. TN. at a very elderly age.

In the "WILL" of PETER BASHAW [2], of Leads Parish, Fauquier Co., Va.,? his children (see chart)are listed. Peter Bashaw's [2] will was witnessed by JOHN NORRIS, JOHN TAYLOR & JOHN COPPEDGE. EXC: CHARLES CHILTON and wife (of Peter) CELIA. CHILTON may be a significant "clue" to identifying this family. his brother James married the daughter of JOHN TAYLOR, FRANCIS TAYLOR. Nancy BREASHEAR and Anthony Phelps made depositions in Kentucky which were signed by a CHILTON. CHILTON were prominent in the OLD RAPPAHANNOCK CO., VA., records.

"Maryland Calendar of Wills" [ID:12002], places Peter [1] as son of William Bashaw s/o Giles (connection changed from father Andrew, bro of Peter-1994-GH).

He married Susannah ROBINSON about Jan 1746 in Burke, North Carolina. She was born 1728 in of, Henrico, Virginia. She was the daughter of John ROBINSON and Tabitha JONES. 79. m ii. Seth Bradshaw (BRASHER, born about 1748 in Virginia. He married Ann LOWE.

Seth died 26May 1826 in Adair, Ky.

Notes for Seth:

This could be William BREASHEAR Jr. (Middle name Seth) of Burke County NC, having colonized there with the WATAGUA Settlement. A close study of the census, tax and land records reveal that the family was recorded under variant spellings viz: Bradshaw; Bracher and BREASHEAR.

BEDFORD CO., TN was separated from Rutherford in 1807. 1830...In Middle Tennessee, Bedford Co., US Census are a group of men that look suspiciously like a clan of cousins or brothers with names similar to these Bradshaws. They are listed as BRECHEEN [Bresheer?],

1830...Another record gives these same men as BRASHEARS, Josiah age 20-30; Stanfield age 20-30; and William BREASHEAR as age 70-80. This could be the Brashears clan from whom Henry Alexander BRESHEARS issued. They were in the area of TN that would have made that possible.

80. f iii. Rhoda BRADSHAW, born about 1749 in Of, North Carolina.

81. m iv. Josiah BRADSHAW, born 1750 in Burke County, North Carolina. He married Nancy HOGAN about 1777 in Burke County, North Carolina. She was born about 1754 in Of, Burke, North Carolina.

Josiah died 29Mar 1821 in Burke, NC, at the age of 71, and was buried in Bradshaw Cem, Smokey Cr., Burke, NC.

82. m v. William BRADSHAW, born about 1752 in Virginia. He married Mary WEAVER.

William died 9Oct 1827 in Burke, North Carolina.

Notes for William:

This is probably the same person as William Seth Bradshaw, listed here as a possible brother to Seth.

83. m vi. Charles BRADSHAW, born about 1752 in Virginia. He married Rachel THOMPSON.

Charles died 18Apr 1828 in Weakley, North Carolina.

Notes for Charles:

84. m vii. Obediah BRADSHAW, born about 1755 in Virginia, died abts 1820/1840 in Haywood, North Carolina.

85. m viii. Isaiah BRADSHAW, born about 1759 in Virginia. He married Elizabeth THOMPSON about 1780 in Of, Burke, North Carolina. Isaiah died about 1820/1830 in Burke, NC.

86. m ix. James BRADSHAW, born about 1761/1763 to parents who, at the time, resided in Burke, NC. The child James was taken from the "Ancestral File", 1993. I have no proof there was a child James in this family-this is in conflict with research of Mrs. Arlene Reed Adkins who has done extensive research.

Tn.?, deals with the lands which indicates JAMES BRADSHAW was deceased and AMOS BALACH and JOHN WHITE receive his share viz: INSERT HERE

In trying to identify the young ALEXANDER and NATHAN BASHAM alias BRASHER who receive land from the grant of AMOS BALACH and JOHN WHITE, we wonder what the tie is? It is probable they may be uncles?, Spouses of their grandfather's daughters, looking after their interests as heirs in right of their father.

***** THOUGHTS ON MIGRANTS TO MECKLENBURG CO NORTH CAROLINA *****

[Spartanburg SC., Lawrenceburg TN., and Benton/Polk Co., MO.]

1666-1670...Accomack and Annamassex Co., Va., were settled about these yrs. Their leader was Stephen HORSLEY who died there in 1772. William BASHAW son of Giles BASHAW [2], was closely affiliated with the HORSELY family [apprenticed ?].

The descendants of these early colonizers, beginning about 1622-34, as documented in the early records of the HARRISES and ALEXANDER families, are those who migrated up the Chesapeake Bay, coastal Counties {Maryland's Eastern Shore} and who are found nested in and around Big & Little Elk and Bohemia Rivers MD/PA.. This area is later divided by the MASON & DIXON LINE, Cecil Co.,MD.,and Chester Co., PA. The Bradshaws who were alias BRAZIER in the OLD AUGUSTA CO VA/PA., records are undoubtedly descendants of Giles BRADSHAWE/BASHAW and his brothers, who colonized Accomack Co., Va.,Giles died 1622.

Other forebearers associated with the MECHLENBURG SIGNERS in NC., are families found a half century earlier where they settled in the JAMES TOWN section of Virginia. Some had removed to the South side of the JAMES RIVER, along the ELIZABETH RIVER in NORFOLK County, Bays and inlets of NANSEMOND COUNTY, and like those who remained in ACCOMACK, for some time, joined the migration to ANNAMASSEX and POCAMOKE RIVER VA.

The Names of families associated with the Spartanburg South Carolina and Lawrenceburg Tennessee BRESHEARS families are:

... to name a few, who were from the eastern shore of Maryland and Accomack Co., VA.. They removed north to old CHESTER CO., PA., [along the Susquehanna River & tributaries], and then on into NC.

The MECKLENBURG NC DECLARATION OF INDEDPENDENCE was born. The faded names along the rivers POCOMOKE, SNOWHILL and MONIKINS tally perfectly with the signers of this declaration of North Carolina.

From the "NORTHAMPTON ENGAGEMENT" and the "NORTHAMPTON PROTEST", both signed by HORSELY before this migration occurred, and from the tythe lists of NORTHAMPTON CO.,VA., in 1666, we cull many of the names that went with Stephen HORSLEY, because they lived and died in SOMERSET CO MD., leaving sons and daughters , who are later found in the records of CECIL, TALBOT, KENT and DORCHESTER COUNTIES MD., further North into PA., and finally to MECKLENBURG CO., NC., [between the YADKIN & CATAWBA RIVER].

As the lands became available in Old Augusta Co., Va., they are found in & on the western frontier, the SURNAME BRADSHAW as found on the Eastern shore, spelled phonetically in these old records became, BRAZER; BRAZIER; BRUSHIER/BROSHEAR; BUSHER; BASHAW; BRATCHER. Deep roots became even more tangled as the North Carolinian records documented them as spelled BRATCHER; BRACHER and BRASHER.

The SPARTANBURG SOUTH CAROLINA records with proven documentation, record the William & Sarah BRADSHAW family and descendants as BRATCHER; BRACHER and BRESHEAR. [BREASHEAR} as they sold land in that county. Along with them is Benjamin Bratcher receiving land from John Connors (alias Comer) in 1783. It is probably his heirs that are of Pendelton Co., SC on the 1800 census.

By looking carefully at the CONTINENTAL line grants and comparing them to the county record, which was spelled as the DESCENDANT who removed to LAWRENCE CO., TN., was spelling it in his GENERATION, you can determine the change of spelling between the generations.

87. f x. Ursula BRADSHAW, born about 1762 in Virginia. She married Miles ABERNATHY 6Oct 1781 in Lincoln, North Carolina.

88. f xi. Anna BRADSHAW, born about 1764 in Virginia. She married Field BRADSHAW, Jr. (See number 72)about 1776 in Lincoln County, North Carolina. He was born about 1758 to parents who, at the time, resided in Burke, Burke, North Carolina. He was the son of Field BRADSHAW and Judith ROBINSON.

89. m xii. Elijah BRADSHAW, born about 1766 in Virginia, died about 7Sep 1838 in Greene, Georgia.

Another record (IGI) gives the death place as Burke Co., NC. 1800 Census of Burke Co., NC, # 726: ...William BRASHER Sr. [son of William died 1811 - now Sr., - so the Wm Jr. is? b 1755 or before. WM: 00001- WF: 00001 - 06 slaves. This family appear with variant spellings as: Brasher; Bracher; Bratcher and Bradshaw in the Burke Co., records. Also researching this lineage - Bennie C. 35. James4 BASHAM [BRAZIER], Jr. (14.James3, 7.Peter2, 1.William1) was born about 1757 in Bedford County, Virginia. He married Mary Jane [------?------] about 1792 in of, Bedford, Virginia.

They had 3 children:

+ 90. m i. Archibald BASHAM, born 1769/1770.

91. m ii. Obediah BASHAM.

Mona Maybee notes indicate this is a son who removed to Kentucky.

!Obediah was listed in Bedford Co. VA. He migrated across eastern TN. and into Breckenridge Co. KY.[at least there are 3 OBEDIAH BASHAMS of record in that County]. The question is; what relationship are these families to the BRESHEARS of Lawrence Co., TN.?
The family tradition for Henry Alexander Brashears descendants is that they came from old LARUE CO. KY. Both Larue and Breckenridge Co. KY were taken from Hardin Co. I think we are in the right ball park for pinning the "BRESHEARS" lineage down at last.

One of these men are probably the OBEDIAH BRESHER [or a cousin?] who was heir to Revolutionary land of CHARLES BRESHER and transferred the warrant in Tennessee.

92. m iii. Nathan BASHAM.

!This Nathan probably went to Kentucky as per Mona Maybee notes indicate.

James, Jr. had 8 stepchildren:

93. m iv. Samuel H BASHAM, Jr. He was the biological son of Samuel H. BASHAM and Mary Jane [------?------] .

Apparently the stepfather of ALEXANDER, NATHAN and possibly MIDDLETON BRASHER of Lawrenceburg TN.

94. m v. Archibald BASHAM. He was the biological son of Samuel H. BASHAM and Mary Jane [------?------] .

!There is an elder Archibald Basham with this colony who is closely allied to this family.

95. m vi. Charles BASHAM. He was the biological son of Samuel H. BASHAM and Mary Jane [------?------] .

!Apparent stepbrother of ALEXANDER, NATHAN and possibly MIDDLETON, Lawrenceburg TN.

96. m vii. James BASHAM. He was the biological son of Samuel H. BASHAM and Mary Jane [------?------] .

!This is a tentative connection, James may be a child of a brother.

97. m viii. David BASHAM. He was the biological son of Samuel H. BASHAM and Mary Jane [------?------] .

!This is a tentative connection, may be a child of a brother.

98. m ix. Thomas F. BASHAM. He was the biological son of Samuel H. BASHAM and Mary Jane [------?------] .

!This is a tentative connection, may be a child of a brother.

+ 99. m x. Robert BRASHER, died before 1832.

100. m xi. William Basham or BRASHER. He was the biological son of Samuel H. BASHAM and Mary Jane [------?------] .

Mary also married (1) Samuel H. BASHAM. He was the son of Drury BASHAM, Sr and Elizabeth BREASHEAR.

!Named as Adm. of Drury Basham Sr. in Will bK., B, 3 Feb.1845, Lawrence Co. TN.

!Apparently the stepfather of ALEXANDER, NATHAN and possibly MIDDLETON BRASHER of Lawrenceburg TN. 1829-47...Wills, Lawrence Co., TN., pg 142: SAMUEL H. BASHAM - wife MARY - PLANTATION tract for life. 3 children: Nancy. Eliz., JAMES S., and DRURY Jr.[4 children???], EX: JAMES W. BAULCH [here is the BAULCH connection again?], NB GIBBONS - OCT. Term 1850.

!JANE was evidently the mother of ALEXANDER, MIDDLETON and NATHAN and is found as a widow in her sixties, in HH of Nathan BRESHEARS in MISSOURI. JANE also appears as a buyer of HENRY [1] ALEXANDER BRESHEARS' ESTATE SETTLEMENT and is a widow on the census of LAWRENCE CO.,TN. XCK: A JAMES BRASHER of old Washington Co TN died and left a widow JANE.[[MAY BE THE SAME WIDOW???}, and may be Mary [Jane? Turner] BASHAW/BRADSHAW.

!THEORY: This could be Mary Jane [Turner?] BRASHEARS who married (2) SAMUEL H. son of Drury BASHAM of Lawrenceburg Co TN. Her sons were ALEXANDER and NATHAN BASHAM/BRASHER. [Drury may be a nick name for ANDREW?]. I have also seen DRURY BREAZEAL alias BRASHER in the records. I do not know if this is the same person].

*** JAMES BREASHEAR, "CROOKED LEG JIM", PIONEER OF KY & TN ***

!MARY JANE, who may have been called "JANE", may be the person known as "JANE", who was probable mother of ALEXANDER, possibly MIDDLETON and NATHAN.

The deed index of Lawrence Co. TN., gives her as MARY JANE. A JANE who may be the same person also appears in the buyers of HENRY BRESHEARS estate settlement [1829], and is a widow on the census of LAWRENCE CO.,TN. [It may be MARY JANE BREASHEAR who is from BEDFORD CO.,VA.,wife of JAMES BASHAM/BASHAW, son of JAMES BASHAW/BASHAM and his wife FRANCIS [TAYLOR] BASHAW/BASHAM]. The family records of NATHAN BRESHEAR say JANE, their mother, was married twice. This may account for the confusion over the double usage of the name BRASHER/BASHAM in the LAWRENCEBURG records.

It appears she may have married SAMUEL H. BASHAM Sr as her second husband. This would have made SAMUEL H. BASHAM stepfather of ALEXANDER BRASHER alias ALEXANDER BASHAM [XCK: Lawrenceburg Court records]. This would have included apparent brothers, MIDDLETON, NATHAN and maybe others. [MIDDLETON may be a cousin. it is not clear if the BRASHERS were actually BASHAMS or a separate family].

The deed index of LAWRENCEBURG TN., when cross referenced to the census tables, help to establish that, when JANE'S children first appear on the land deeds, they are heirs of a BASHAM. Possibly SAMUEL H. BASHAM. They then appear as young adults on the census by [presumably], their own father's last name, "BRASHER".

ROBERT BRASHER was named guardian of WILLIAM BRASHEARS orphans. This is not WILLIAM BASHAM JR.

LAWRENCE CO., Court records refer to the HEIRS of WILLIAM BREASHEAR as being exempt from duty for maintaining the road. It would appear the heirs are the clan from LINCOLN CO.,TN.,VIZ: ROBERT; JESSE;;THOMAS [?], HENRY; SAMUEL and JOHN BREASHEAR. [JAMES BRASHEARS {alias BASHAM} may have been a brother to WILLIAM BREASHEAR?].

ROBERT BRASHER/BASHAM then appears in the court records as guardian of WILLIAM BASHAM heirs, who were MINORS, [did William BASHAM SR., have older children?]. The minors were, JOHNSTON; SUSAN; EZEKIAL; MALINDAY; WILLIAM JR.

NATHAN BASHAM received land from JAMES BASHAM in Lawrence Co TN, on 4 Jan 1831. 12 1/2 acres with Robert BRASHER giving oath. ROBERT BRASHER received 41 acres of land and JAMES BASHAM gave oath, 3 Jan 1831, in Lawrence Co. TN. JAMES Brasher was named guardian of WM BASHAM'S orphans viz: Johnston; Susan; William JR., 2 Oct 1827.

!James [ A Rev. War Vet.] and Mary [Jane?} BESHAW of Bedford Co. VA., had a child Obediah and possibly a Nathan. Mr. William IKERD, Route#1, Box, 11-b, Emporid,[Impond?] KA. 66801, is a descendant and seeking information. This James, is the father of the old Archibald Basham who settled in Lincoln Co. TN., from Bedford Co. VA. I feel they may be the parents of Alexander and Nathan BASHAM/BRASHER who were cousin to Georgene's JOHN BRESHEARS b. 1793/5.

CASWELL County records list WILLIAM BASHAW and WILLIAM BASHAM and a WILLIAM BREASHEAR. I feel this old fellow was documented with variant spellings depending on the type of record. viz: land records are one spelling, State tax are spelled another way. Who he was descended from remains to be seen.

I feel it may be THOMAS BAYSHAW [sic BASHAW] who married into the ETHERIDGES OF NORFOLK CO VA. The colonists on HICO CREEK, in NC., were thought to have been living in VA., before the boundary dispute was settled. The waterway was the Roanoke and DAN RIVERS, which swung out of Virginia into the area that was to become CASWELL Co. NC. - - - - - - - - - - -

WILLIAM BRADSHAW of Maury Co. TN., cross referenced to the clan in Campbell Co. TN., in his will, stating he was a BASHAW. It is probable he is the WILLIAM BRATCHER [Bradshaw], Jr. who left land records in Spartanburg Co., Sc [1783] and was pensioned to Lawrenceburg in 1919. for his revolutionary service. GENERATION NO. 5

44. William5 Bashaw or BRESHER (20.Thomas4, 8.Garret3, 5.Thomas2, 1.William1) was born 1745 to parents who, at the time, resided in Norfolk, Virginia. William died in pro, CASWELL, North Carolina. His spouse has not been identified. They had 2 children:

114. m i. Henry Bashaw or BRESHER, born about 1769 in of, Norfolk, Virginia, died about 1829 in pro Lawrenceburg, Lawrence, Tennessee.

I think this may be Henry Alexander Breshear???

!See Bashaw Family History "Mentioned Henry as a Military Record". We need to look again at the CASWELL Co., NC., BASHAWs (sic) Brashers!

The ETHERIDGE wills of Norfolk Co., VA mention the NEWTON family. is a coincidence that the Henry, John and Robert BRESHEARS of Lawrenceburg Co., TN, mention the NEWTON family again?

1856...LAWRENCE CO., TN., Deeds: HEIRS OF JOHN BRASHEARS: Deed to WM E. NEWTON, 6 Mar 1856. Between heirs at law and the children of JOHN BRASHEARS decd, of the last part and WM N. NEWTON of the 2nd part.

115. m ii. George Bashaw or BRESHER, born about 1769 in Of, Norfolk City, Norfolk, Virginia.

...IS THIS HENRY ALEXANDER BRESHEARS... It is logical to place this family to Norfolk Co., VA. In the early VA records it mentions PETER BASHAW and THOMAS BASHAW as being in the Norfolk Co., area. The Mary ETHERIDGE comes from the researcher "Boddy" which gives the ETHERIDGE connection.

Henry Alexander BRESHEARS had 2 sons who married an ETHERIDGE as per family records of Anna and Atsy ETHERIDGE.

WILLIAM BRADSHAW of Maury Co., Tennessee identified himself as WILLIAM BASHAW of Bourbon Co., Kentucky.

This is the Charles Bratcher of William's Creek, Claiborne Co., TN who conveyed land with/to John Owens. Peter HAMMOCK was witness (insert) Charles Bratcher, son of John Bratcher and Jane Canada Bratcher, had 8 children as I recently discovered. He settled in E. 90. Archibald5 BASHAM (35.James, Jr.4, 14.James3, 7.Peter2, 1.William1) was born 1769/1770 in Of, Bedford, Virginia. Archibald died at the time residing in Lawrenceburg, Lawrence, Tennessee. He married Winna JONES 5Sep 1782 in Bedford County, Virginia. She was born about 1762 in Of, Bedford, Virginia.

They had 7 children:

+ 126. m i. James M. BASHAM, born 1787.

+ 127. m ii. Richard BASSHAM, born 1789.

128. f iii. Nancy BASHAM, born about 1790 in Of, Bedford, Virginia.

130. m v. Nathan B BASHAM, born 1797 in Bedford County, Virginia.

+ 131. m vi. Drury BASHAM, Sr, born 1800.

132. m vii. Robert S. BASHAM, born 1810 in Lawrence County, Tennessee.

!According to Mona Maybee ,( 534 E. Deerfield, Springfield MO 65807) research this is the correct connection for Archibald Basham father of Drury who married Elizabeth Brashears.

There are BASHAMS: ALEXANDER; NATHAN; ROBERT; DRURY; RICHARD; JAMES and others, who are clearly cross referenced as "BRASHER", in the early land deeds of Lawrence Co., TN. The BRASHEARS clan from Lincoln Co., who settled Lawrence Co.,TN., about 1820, viz: HENRY; JOHN; JESSE; JAMES; THOMAS and SAMUEL were close allies of the BASHAM family. The US and State tax lists [that this researcher has ], do not record BASHAMS. It appears from the County Court records that the above men reverted to Brasher and Brosher surname after receiving the land.

1833... ALEXANDER BRASHER and his wife MARGARET BRESHEAR, the daughter of HENRY ALEXANDER BRESHEAR, are known cousins. A family bible in possession of DELLA SCOTT, descendant of NATHAN BRASHER, records HENRY ALEXANDER BRESHEARS'S grandson JOHN W. BRESHEAR and wife LUCY. This helps establish a close alliance between the two families.

*** DRURY BASHAM is indexed as DRURY BREASHEAR in the deeds of Lawrenceburg***

1817...The land deeds for Lawrence Co., TN., and the above mentioned people give-ROBERT BRASHER alias BASHAM; NATHAN BASHAM alias BRASHER; and DRURY BASHAM Jr. who's mother was ELIZABETH BRASHEARS, seen in the deeds index as alias BREASHEAR . [[[ This ROBERT BRASHER was deceased by 1832 as seen in Inventories, Wills, Sale Bills, Settlements for the State of TN, Lawrence County 3rd Jan., Court term.]]]. 99. Robert5 BRASHER (stepchild of 35.James, Jr.4, 14.James3, 7.Peter2, 1.William1). He was the biological son of Samuel H. BASHAM and Mary Jane [------?------] . Robert died before 1832 in Lawrence County, Tennessee. He married Sally RHEA about 1795 in TN or County, Alabama. She was born about 1775. She was the daughter of John Sr. RHEA. Sally died after 1834 in of, Giles, Tennessee.

They had 1 child:

+ 133. m i. Jesse BRASHER.

!This is a tentative connection, may be a child of a brother

In trying to identify a close relationship between the Warren/White County TN clan to a Robert BREASHEAR, I keep coming back to Robert brother of Thomas who died at Foreman's Defeat in 1777 - PA.

1834...John Rhea made a bond in Giles County TN dated 13 Dec 1834. He is mentioned in the following estate settlement viz: Madison Co. AL, loose bonds by Ganrud, pg 84, no 22: Hopkins LACY, receive of Theophilus Lacy who was Adm of Hopkins Lacy decd. the Adm for JOHN RHEA, the following sums: for Phillip MASON in right of wife Nancy, Joseph Nail in right of wife Esther, ROBERT BRASHEARS (who had wife Sallie RHEA), William Rhea's heir, Margaret Wrights Heirs. (Jesse son of Robert md Margaret Wright and had heir Robert Jr.). for self (John Rhea), all heirs of John Rhea Sr.

1830-32...If ROBERT BRASHER who was administrator for WILLIAM BREASHEAR SR. of LAWRENCE CO., TN., died about 1830ish, as the court case indicated ["he was deceased"], and must have been a relative of WILLIAM, then how does the ROBERT BREASHEAR who died 1852 and left the following will, fit in this lineage - if he does ?

There is the JESSE BRASHER named as orphan of ROBERT BRASHER Jr., in the care of the ROBERT BRASHER Sr. who was father of JESSE BRASHER, husband of MARGARET WRIGHT. Robert [gr-child] was left an orphan, son of JESSE BRASHER, in the care of a ROBERT BRASHER SR. who died in 1852 ? Lawrence Co., TN., Wills BK 1852-56, pg 81, dated 28 Sep 1852: Inv. and sale of ROBERT BRASHERS dec. BUYERS: SARAH BRASHER; JOHN J. ROGERS; F.R. CRABB; AARON COMER [sic Connor?]; G.W. VESTELL; SILAS TIDWELL; E.H. HENSON. MILLER N. McKENNY; JAMES H. CRABB; et al; Notes on various people. ADM: ROBERT NEWTON [same person who was JOHN BRASHER'S administrator?].

Note: Here is something that keeps getting in the way of putting this lineage together. The THOMAS BREASHEAR who died at Foreman's defeat - 1777, left his estate in the care of his brother ROBERT BREASHEAR. If there were children involved as heirs, wouldn't they be with a ROBERT BREASHEAR as he claimed in right of the Rev. War service. Over 1000 acres were warranted in KY., - but not claimed - for service of THOMAS BRAZIER who was affiliated with William LINN and George Rogers CLARK... so what happened? THOMAS BRAZIER and WILLIAM BREASHEAR are named as receiving land warrants in KY.

*** THIS IS A THEORY CONNECTION ONLY AT THIS POINT IN TIME ***

Since Alexander (2) Basham alias Brasher is a known cousin to Margaret BRESHEARS, his wife, then their fathers (or mothers?) would have to be siblings from the same family. Elizabeth Basham was either married before or looking after the orphans Alexander & Nathan. There is some evidence that there was an ALEXANDER (1) associated with the Lawrenceburg clan (see deeds abstracts). If that is so, then there is a possibility of Alexander (2) -spouse of Margaret, being descended from Alexander (1).

Evidently Elizabeth is not the PAUPER in care of Henry Alexander and John BREASHEAR, who lived to be over 100 years of age in LAWRENCE Co., TN. (1830).

*** DRURY BASHAM'S LAND IS INDEXED AS BRASHEARS ON DEEDS INDEX ***

Along with the Lincoln Co TN. Brashears is this clan of BASHAMS. !The deed indexes of Lawrence Co TN, clearly cross reference Drury Basham alias Drury BREASHEAR [must be DRURY JR.?],. Robert, Alexander BASHAM and Nathan Basham are clearly BRASHER when you compare the deeds and the census/tax records of Lawrence Co TN.
