The following explanation of the Bounty Land Warrant Records in the
National Archives is taken from Cpt 8 of the "Guide to Genealogical
Research in the National Archives", published by the National
Archives and records service fin Washington D.C.- 1982:
...As the result of an act of Congress 6 May 1812 (2 Stat. 729), and
other War of 1812 acts, a noncommissioned officer or soldier who
served in the Regular Army for the Duration of the War of 1812 was
entitled to bounty land in one of three bounty-land districts. These
districts contained 6,000,000 acres in all, were located in ARKANSAS;
ILLINOIS, and MISSOURI in accordance with the above-mentioned act, as
modified by acts of Congress approved 16 and 29 Apr, 1816 (3 Stat.
787, 332).
Until the passage of an act approved 27 Jul 1842 (5 Stat. 497),
the warrants could not be used for land outside of these districts
and were not assignable.
Each soldier was entitled to 160 acres, except for a few who were
entitled to 320 acres or double the bounty. The file contains such
information as: Name of the veteran; location of the land; date of
patent; and the volume and pg no., of the recorded copy of the patent
in the Bureau of Land Management, Wash., D.C.
