*** PRATHER/ BRASHEARS COUSINS OF ST. ANDREWS LAND TRACT ***

In looking for the descendancy of HENRY ALEXANDER BRESHEARS, it has been a THEORY for years [ of many researchers, including GEORGENE, ROY COLBERT, deceased, and VOYNE BRESHEARS, deceased, of BOLIVAR CO., MISSOURI clan, LILY & LILLA BRASHEARS of MISSOURI descendants of LUTHER BRESHEARS - abt 1950 to 60, first published in "GOLDEN LINKS" 1960s by Georgene, and by Dorothy ELLIOTT joining the "team", post 1968, with correspondence with G.H., that we descend from BASIL BRASHEARS "TBS"#31, SAMUEL'S son.

There is supporting evidence to some degree, of this theory. The fact that MIDDLETON BRASHEAR was situated on the ENOREE RIVER [abt 1772], at it's head, [Platt map for MIDDELTON BRESHEARS ] who had lived previously in OLD MECHLENBURG CO., NC., in that area later separated out as YORK CO., SC., [Court case 1771] which was later called SPARTENBURG CO., SC, could have made it possible for the unidentified BRASHEARS [ FOUND ON THE 1800 US Census}, who were early residents of PENDLETON CO.,SC., to have descended from him. However, if we look close at the Spartenburg Co., SC, land indexes, we determine that a John Sr. and a John Jr. exchanged land (see John Brashier) and then tax lists show conclusively that John Sr. had sons Lawrence, John, Thomas and Henry. This John was born in the 1730s (see charts) The PRATHER COUSINS were settled in old 96th dist. SC., Basil and his wife SARAH WALLINGFORD had a son BENJAMIN BRASHEAR who could have been the BENJAMIN BRESHEARS [BRADSHAW] that was living in SC., Dist 96, also and that could explain the unidentified BENJAMIN BRASHEAR / BRATCHER / BRADSHAW of Pendelton and Spartenburg County SC.

GENERATION NO. 2

4. Samuel2 BRASHEAR {9651} (1.Samuel1) was born 2 Jan 1696 in of, Prince George, Maryland. He was the son of Samuel BRASHEAR {9649} and Ann JONES {4001}. Samuel died 1773 in Prince George County, Maryland, at the age of 76. He married Elizabeth BRASHEAR {9660} 17 Dec 1717 in Prince Georges County, Maryland. She was born 30 Mar 1701 in Of, Maryland. She was the daughter of Benjamin BRASHEAR {10473} and Mary JONES {10488}.

Known children of Samuel BRASHEAR and Elizabeth BRASHEAR are:

+ 14. m i. Samuel BRASHEAR {4058}, born 5 Dec 1717/1718.

15. f ii. "TBS"#72 Mary BRASHEAR {9668}, born 20 Nov 1720 in Prince George County, Maryland.

16. m iii. Joseph BRASHEAR {9669}, born 15 Jan 1722 in Prince George County, Maryland.

From Charles Brashears, 31 Aug 1999: Hi all, We can quit worrying about Joseph Brashear, b. 1722, as a possible Breshear(s) ancestor. Rich Kurlich, a descendant of Margery Brashear and Joseph Jenkins, sent me text of an 1815 court case in Monongalia Co, VA (now WV), in which the children of Jeremiah Brashears and his first wife are named in detail, Jeremiah's parents are identified, Samuel and Elizabeth's children are named (there are both a John and a Morris, so there was supposed to have been a comma in that will that named John Morris) and verifying that Margery Brashear, d/o Jeremiah, married Joseph Jenkins. Why all these people are named is still a mystery, but it goes on to close the book on Joseph: ... "that the sd Joesph Brashiers, brother of sd Jeremiah Brashiers, intermarried with Patsey Beaden, by whom they had an only child called Elizabeth."

And since we can trace Joseph through land and county records in PGCo, which he never left, we can quit thinking of him as a Breshears ancestor. My current notion is that he m.1. Patsey Beaden and had one child; Patsy (Elizabeth) probably died relatively young, and Joseph m.2. Mary Cross (who may have been a widow). Joseph's estate was administered in 1785 at first by Mary Brashears, who may have been his late-in-life second wife, or may have been his sister, who was unmarried and got special legacies in both Samuel's and Elizabeth's wills. In either case, Mary soon died (apparently) and the estate was taken over by Alexander Duvall, a Baltimore Lawyer (and probably a relative) who completed the estate in 1795.

35. m viii. Samuel BRASHEARS {10011}, born 20 Sep 1739 in Prince Georges County, Maryland.

NOTES for John:

It would appear that although JOHN was the son [given name omitted] from the will, that he was mentioned as inheriting a portion of ST. ANDREWS but the name appears blank. We know from the Court case that MIDDLETON son of BASIL was in the care of JOHN 3 BRASHEARS. This is JOHN BRASHEAR "TBS#28 - right? !MARRIAGE: This JOHN was married to RUTH WALKER sister of REBECCA WALKER, whose parents were CHARLES & REBECCA WALKER. ANDREW SWEARINGEN was married to a RUTH WALKER'S sister also and so this would place him with the BRASHEARS heirs at ST.ANDREWS.

A QUESTION: This is the JOHN BRASHEARS who would have logically removed with the BRASHEARS; SWEARINGENS; PRATHERS and WALKERS to 'OLD ORANGE COUNTY NC", and would have been the family associated with the ROBERT SAMUEL BRASHEARS family and their collaterals. So...If the JOHN BRASHEARS of Spartenburg SC., who removed to Lawrence Co.,TN., was of this family, since he was being responsible for MIDDLETON BRASHEARS back in MARYLAND, wouldn't it seem probable he and /or his son [born 1734], was still in the picture as they removed through these areas? The JOHN born 1734 left a military record stating he was in SC & Alabama [insert here]. So...should we consider this JOHN JR.[5th?]to be the John who removed to Lawrenceburg TN.?

10. Basil2 BRASHEAR {9635} (1.Samuel1) was born 18 Mar 1714 in Calvert County, Maryland. He was the son of Samuel BRASHEAR {9649} and Ann JONES {4001}. He married Ann BELT {9667} about 1734 in Of, Calvert, Maryland. She was the daughter of Benjamin BELT {11363}.

Known children of Basil BRASHEAR and Ann BELT are:

+ 36. m i. Jesse BRASHEARS, Sr. {10669}, born about 1734/1738, died before 1782.

+ 37. m ii. Middleton BRASHEAR {4057}, born about 1735, died after 1772.

NOTES for Basil:

From Basils's father's will, we determine those PERSONS who were inheriting the ST. ANDREWS tract of land and "ORPHANS GIFT"- a portion of the St. Andrews tract.

...SAMUEL BRASSHEAR JR: CATHERINE PRATHER [Possibly the wife of THOMAS PRATHER?-], had a son JOHN PRATHER who signed a bond to SAMUEL #11. The Land is a portion of ST.ANDREWS called "ORPHANS GIFT:

...BASIL BRASSHEAR: ARON PRATHER owed a bond to the father SAMUEL BRASSHEAR for a portion of "ORPHANS GIFT". BASIL inherited a portion of "THORPLAND", and SAMUEL mentions BENJAMIN WALLINGSFORD ]. BASIL also received the "New Dwelling Plantation". BASIL'S widow to receive it if Basil dies before her. The designation is - BASIL'S heirs "Lawfully gotten of his body" to receive it - forever.

...OTHO BRASSHEAR: Is to receive either of the above tracts of land and so may not have ended up as an heir to ST.ANDREWS. OTHO and JOHN? BRASSHEAR are to receive "HOGGS HARBOR", Location not given but the HOGG family were of FAYETTE CO., PA., so probably were adj., ST. ANDREWS. OTHO and the OTHER heirs were to receive the personal estate.

...BENJAMIN BRASSHEAR: SAMUEL calls BENJAMIN his "CUZEN", [meaning near relative?]. This is undoubtedly. BENJAMIN BRASSHEAR the son of BASIL and SARAH WALLINGSFORD. He is given the honor of manageing the estate.

...WILLIAM BRASSHEAR: A right to a RESURVEY on the tract of land called ST. ANDREWS, for him and his heirs forever. ...ROBERT BRASSHEAR: a portion of ST. ANDREWS also.

*** NOW TO THE SUPREME COURT CASE BEFORE JUDGE KEAN and YEATES.***

Is St. Andrews the land in question? If so, then at the late date that the court case took place, the deponents would have been the heirs from each of the above families claiming in right of their fathers.viz:

...FOR BASIL: BENJAMIN struck out, why? He was still around in 1790 US census.

...FOR ZACHARIAH claiming his for BASIL?

...FOR OTHO: No claim ? Unless the SMITHS [descendants?] were claiming for his portion. ...FOR WILLIAM: Seems he was left, after JOSEPH died in 1778 to fend for the estate. ...FOR ANN: THOMAS BROWN heirs.

*** THE YEATES; WELLS; PRATHER; BRASHEARS FAMILY CONNECTIONS ***

1707-1745: PRICILLA PRATHER who married WILLIAM BRASHEAR "TBS#23, was a descendant of WILLIAM and ANN "WELLS" YEATES who was the daughter of GEORGE and MARY "STOCKSTON" WELLS -[is this the YEATES who was in the Supreme Court Case? We know the KEENS were married to BRASHEARS.]

GEORGE WELLS CONNECTION: ...1745-GEORGE WELLS and JOHN BRASHEARS were WTN: in the will of MIDDLETON BELT. The will verifies that MIDDLETON is the son of BASIL. "1745...I Middleton Belt, of Prince George Co., MD. ...To my nephew MIDDLETON BRASHEARS, son of BASIL BRASHEARS, at the decease if my father, BENJAMIN BELT, one slave. EXC: BENJ BELT. WIT: GEORGE WELLS & JOHN BRASHEARS".

1847...BENJ BARSIER: granted land from Heirs of JOHN WELLS. deceased. Livingston Co., KY. } 1836...ALEX BRASHER: Livingston Co., KY granted land from Lewis WEBB guardian for BENJAMIN & GEORGE WELLS. [is this Alex Basham/Brasher who married Margaret BRESHEAR of Lawrenceburg? I don't think it is son of Thomas Brazier of Christian Co.,KY. However XCK - Alexander Brookter [alias BRASHEAR] of Baton Rouge LA, who may be the ALEX. BRAZER of Livingston/Christian Co., Area 1803.

He married Charity McDOWELL {10436} about 1728 in Of, Maryland. She was born 4 Apr 1711 in Ann Arundel Co., MD. She was the daughter of Phillip McDOWELL {10437} and Mary TYDINGS {10438}.

+ 40. m ii. Asa BRASHEAR {27224}, born 1745, died 1818.

NOTES for Robert:

The "WILL" gives ROBERT'S portion of the estate as that thatn was ARON PRATHER'S land so that would place him at ST. ANDREWS also. 1732...ROBERT BRASHEARS, Jr., to JOHN HANBURY and WM MAUDUIT, merchant of London, land "GOODWILL", a mortgage to pay 24 pounds 7 shillings owed. WTN: JOHN BRASHEARS (b 1702). Then came CHARITY, wife of ROBERT and consented 1 May 1732 [ID:16925-Mrs Nimmo]. 1765/9...Henry Alexander Breshears of Lawrenceburg TN, has been theorized as being a son of another marriage of Robert and Charity Brashears. That would make Robert 60+ years old as a father. Well - our family came from the Missouri leg of the family - we need proof. The lineage as it has been constructed may be seen in "TBS".

NOTES for Ruth:

1751...The first settlement [Your Family Tree; PA Per. Vol.5-6-1952], made in FAYETTE CO., PA., was under the auspices of the "OHIO LAND COMPANY"-Old Walpole Land Company. [XCK: THOMAS BRAZIER alias BRADSHAW, a member of W.L.CO.], WENDALL BROWN, and sons of MAUNUS and ADAM BROWN settled there in 1751-52. CHRISTOPHER GIST (Relative of William BEZER) followed a year later.

1759...Brownsville first appears in history by construction of FORT BURD, in Oct 1759. This fort became widely known as "FORT REDSTONE", [OLD FORT], from it's location. Col. Burd's Fort continued long as headquarters for the hardy men who kept watch upon the the Indians who inhabited the head-waters of the Ohio. Col Michael Creasap made this fort a ralling place for his men, and at that early date secured a Virginia title to several hundred acres surrounding the fort, by "Tomahawk-improvements". Creasap kept the titles for a few years and then disposed of them to two brothers named BROWN from Maryland. It is not known if these men were related to the WENDALL BROWN.

1768...ZACHARIAH; WILLIAM; THOMAS and JOSEPH BRASHEAR appear upon a list of accounts at FORT REDSTONE, for MR. WILLIAM COLVIN, [sic CALVEN]. The CALVINS were on tax lists for FAIRFAX CO., VA., later years.

NOTES for Otho:

...The gr-grandfather of JOHN ALFRED BRESHEARS, OTHO BRASHEARS, came to BROWNSVILLE in the company of THOMAS and BASIL BROWN, in 1775. THOMAS BROWN purchased the land on which the town was laid out; The town of Brownsville was not incorporated until 1815; in which year I find recorded the name of my grandfather, BASIL BRASHEARS as member of the first Council. I find that BASIL BROWN and BASIL BRASHEAR were elected to the membership of the first vestry of the Episcopal Church of Brownsville, at a meeting held 26 Aug 1813; and I presume this BASIL BRASHEAR was my grandfather and BASIL BRASHEAR HIS COUSIN.

I can fully remember sixty years ago visiting quite frequently the old buring-ground on the Commons, where were buried many of the early settlers of BROWNSVILLE. I never could find the grave of my gr-grandfather; but that of THOMAS BROWN, who died 18 Mar 1797, always held a facination for me.

By the side of THOMAS BROWN are those of JOHN H. and ARCHIBALD WASHINGON, cousins of GEORGE WASHINGTON [in my early years said to be brothers], both of whom died of smallpox which broke out among a lot of slaves they were taking to Kentucky. The death of both these men occured 10 Apr 1818. I write of this because I remember well how interesting it was for us boys who went to school in the old red-brick schoolhouse, built on the Commons so dear to us as a playground, which adjoined the little cemetery. I must add with considerable shame for the place of my birth, that when I visited the graveyard [we never called it Cemetery] in later years, I found some of the old tombstones used as a pavement in front of the stable.

NOTES for Jesse, Sr.:

*** HENRY & JESSE BRESHEARS DESCENDANCY - CHALLENGED LINKAGE ***

{{{I just do not see how either Jesse or Henry Alex. Breshears could fit as descendants of Bail Breshears & Ann (Belt) Breshears- however I place Jesse lineage here as per other researchers oppinions-I do not agree with this connection!!!}}}

1755...By 1755 Jesse Prather had removed to the Old County of Orange NC.

1760...ish, Jesse received land in St Matthew's Parish Georgia, a Royal Land Grant. [see "LWSF" for lists of places and others who received grants about the same time].

1740...If we look at SAMUEL BRASSHEAR'S ["TBS#11"] - WILL, we see a CATHERINE PRATHER, [A PRATHER was married to a BRASHEARS- insert here], who is mother of JOHN PRATHER. ARON PRATHER is mentioned also. The PRATHERS are probably descendants of THOMAS PRATHER who held land that was termed "ST. ANDREWS". Presumably the enter-related PRATHER; BRASHEARS; HALLUM; SWEARINGEN; BROWN and other "CUZINS" migrated together.

[William Brazier, father of THOMAS BRAZIER who married Sarah Constance, had a court record witnessed by one JOHN FREELAND - just wondering if this might give a BRASHEAR - FREELAND connection to Elizabeth PRATHER Brashear's second husband George Freeland?]

The elusive tracks left by the Jesse BRASHEARS, his PRATHER cousins [and possibly his brothers], follow from MARYLAND, SOUTHWESTERN PA., to ORANGE CO., NC., by 1755, possibly old 96th Dist. SC., [Old Pendelton CO., SC] and on into Spanish West FLORIDA where they received land grants by "HIS MOST ROYAL ENGLISH MAJESTY", in the Parishes along the Savanna River on the GEORGIA side about 1765. The BRASHER plantation in Spanish West Florida [Later East Feliciana LA.] reverted to the rule of the SPANISH who held the territories when England ceded to Spain. After the Revolutionary War, we find Jesse and his family living in Prince Geo. Co., MD.

1778...24 Nov: [Chancery Papers #2617, Land Office, Annapolis MD., shows that JESSE BRASHEARS married ELIZABETH PRATHER. The BRASHEARS were French Huguenots and the PRATHERS came from WILTSHIRE ENGLAND. The Couple moved after their marriage to PENSECOLA FLORIDA where they kept an Inn. The land deed for the Pensecola Property is dated 24 Nov 1778. and consisted of : One part of a town lot of ground, and the whole of garden lot #26.

1787...Jesse , Elizabeth and children came to Feliciana Parish LA. Several of their children were married into the Indian tribe that lived in the vicinity of Pearl River, which separates present day Louisiana from Mississippi.

1830...The US Government decreed that the Indians living in Louisiana west of the Miss. River be removed to a reservation on the east side of the Miss. River.

Tradition in the HENRY ALEXANDER BRESHEARS family states " THE CATHOLICS DROVE THEM OUT", and the Clairborn MISSISSIPPI TERRITORIAL records of claims to Washington DC., for Spanish held land that reverted to the English, [formerly Spanish held], gives evidence of HENRY BRATCHER at Bayou Pierre, along with others who may be of this clan.

PENSECOLA  FLORIDA was the Fort manned by the English Militia DURING THE COLONIAL PERIOD [1756-ish]. There was a Capt. JAMES BRASHER who served there during that time, who may have been affilliated with Captain RICHARD BRASHEAR. [Insert...if memory serves] It may be James BRASHIER'S (BRATCHEY) who removed to and colonized in the Spanish West Florida Area. Captain RICHARD BRASHEAR [military] and my WILLIAM ATCHISON [surveyor], were heavily involved in the depositions for claims to the land which had to be proved after reverting from the Spanish back to the English after abt 1806 - 1820 which delt with that area South of the TENNESSEE RIVER.

1782...Before this date, JESSE BRASHEARS died and left a widow ELIZABETH PRATER BRASHEARS who married GEORGE FREELAND. Upon her death the following estate was settled.

1804...Spanish West Florida Court Records, pg 211-222 lists the following probate records. WILL: Of ELIZABETH PRATER...written in English and copied verbatim Since the family was living in Spanish West Florida, the fact that the will was in English helps to identify this family as those who received the "British Royal Grants" along the Savannah River early [ see "LWSF", for lists]

...In the name of God Amen, I ELIZABETH PRATER, formerly wife of GEORGE FREELAND of NEW FELICIANA FLORIDA considering the uncertainty of this mortal life and being in perfect sound and disposing mind & memory do make and ordain this my last will and testament in manner and form tewit: I give and bequeath to my daughter ELIZABETH BRASHEARS wife of WILLIAM TAYLOR a negro girl names SUKEY about fourteen years old, in consideration of her care and attention to me during my former and present illness. I give and bequeath to my daughters ELIZABETH and ROUTH BRASHEARS all my wearing apparel, to be equally devided between them. The remainder of my estate both real and personal consisting of lands, lots in PENSECOLA [[[BIG CLUE - may be connection to JAMES BRASHER, Capt. of Militia, of PENSECOLA FLORIDA abt 1755 ]]], negros vis, ZADOCK; PHILLIP; ELIZABETH; SAMUEL; ASA; and ROUTH BRASHEARS to be equally devided among them after my descease. And it is my will, that whatever I have formerly given amongst my children since the descease of my first husband JESSE BRASHERS will remain as it now is without alteration or second division. And I do hereby constitute and appoint my son ZADOCK BRASHEARS, Doctor JAQUES RAOUL AND JOHN MURDOCK - EXECUTORS of this my last will and testament. In testimony whereof, I the said ELIZABETH PRATHER have hereunto made my accustomed mark, not knowing how to write. In Feliciana aforesaid the sixteenth day of July one thousend eight hundred and four in the presence of JOHN RHEA; CHAMPASAS TERRY; THOMAS CARNEY; MARTIN BOURG; ADWELL ATKINS; ZACHARIAH RICHARDSON; and AMERICUS BRIZINA witness, inhabitaants and residents of the district for the want of a notary. GH has Territorial Records that document RICHARD and Thomas BRASHEARS at Fort St. Stephens at what is now Jackson, Mississippi, [insert notes].

The Breshears who removed to Polk County Missouri had a tradition, "They came from Jackson", presumably Jackson Mississippi. Another tradition "The Catholics drove them out". Both of these traditions fit the Jesse Brashears and his brother clan who held land under "HIS MOST ROYAL CATHOLIC MAJESTY", in the Mississippi Territory.

In the Louisiana Court records are BRASHEARS heads of households who appear to be brothers. The given name CAlvin is a reoccurung name in following generations. Presumably names after William Calvin of Fairfax Co., VA , father-i-law of William Breashear who MD JANE CALVIN.

Records, vol 1: 1818-1823]. Another record makes referrence to the "HEIRS OF WILLIAM" [bro of Henry?]. It appears the senior men WILLIAM, HENRY, JOHN, THOMAS, JAMES AND ROBERT BRASHER were fathers of the younger clan who appear about 1818-1820, in the areas of Lawrence Co., and Perry Co., Tennessee. The heirs of JESSE were those who settled PERRY CO., Viz: of ZADOCK and removed to Arkansas, Johnson County. 37. Middleton3 BRASHEAR {4057} (10.Basil2, 1.Samuel1) was born about 1735 to parents who, at the time, resided in St. Andrews Parish, Prince Georges, Maryland. He was the son of Basil BRASHEAR {9635} and Ann BELT {9667}. Middleton died after 1772 in Upper Enoree River, Spartenburg, South Carolina. He married Henrieta PRATHER {9764} about 1757 at the time residing in Haw River, Old Orange Co., North Carolina. She was born about 1735 in Of, Maryland. She was the daughter of Phillip PRATHER, Sr {10725} and Catherine BRASHEAR {10726}. Henrieta died at the time residing in Upper Enoree River, Dist 96, South Carolina.

Children thought to descend from Middleton BRASHEAR and Henrieta PRATHER are:

+ 102. m i. Basil BOSHEARS***, Sr. {14871}, born about 1765.

103. m ii. Henry Alexander BOSHEAR*** {25515}, born about 1769 in Guilford, North Carolina. (Note: See as descendant of JOHN BRASHIER b 1699 son of William and Elizabeth (CLAYTON) BRASHIER alias BEZER Compiled by GeorgeneHumphries).

104. m iii. John BOSHEAR*** {6573}, born 1767 in of, Orange or Guilford, North Carilina.

72. John Brashears, b. NC, 1767; d. before 1 Nov 1852, Lawrence Co, TN; m. in Pendleton Dist, SC, c1790, Mary Berry, b. SC, 1777, from a Guilford Co, NC family, d. Lawrence Co, TN, 1868.¸John's parentage has not yet been proven; he was a brother of Henry Breshears, of Lawrence Co, TN, b. 1769.¸ I believe (cannot prove-note by Charles Brashears ) that they and Basil Brashears, b. c1765, were sons of Middleton Brashears, s/o Basil Brashear and Ann Belt, of Prince George's Co, MD, Orange/Guilford Co, NC, and Spartanburg/Laurens Co, SC.¸They may have had two other brothers who died early, leaving men who (family traditions say) were nephews of Henry and John.

Among these possible brothers are the James Breshears, who m. Jane Turner (probably parents of Middleton Breshears the Younger, Nathan Turner Breshears, and Alexander Brashears) and possibly an Absalom Brashears/Boshears (possible parent of Berry Brashears/Boshears, b. 1790, and others-Charles Brashears note).

NORMAN PARKS THEORIZING AGAIN

¸¸¸¸Norman L. Parks, a descendant, says John followed his older half-brother, Samuel Robert Brashear, to the Pendleton District, SC; there he married and had two sons.¸Then he moved, about 1800, to Roane Co, TN and worked with/for Robert Samuel Brashears in Sugar Grove Valley.¸There his daughter Elizabeth was born.¸ From 1807 to 1811, John lived in Hawkins Co, TN, then moved to White Co, TN, where two sons were born.¸He lived in Lawrence Co, TN, from 1817 to 1819; then moved back to White Co, where the last of his children was born.¸In 1827, he moved permanently to Lawrence Co, TN, where he died before 1 Nov 1852, when the probate of his estate was opened.

Lawrence County, Tenn Land Grants (from State Archives, Nashville) #9504¸ 10 ac.¸date?

¸¸¸¸Norman Parks says that Nancy (Boshears) Dial, youngest child of John Brashears, lived in the Parks household when he was a little boy.¸"I knew her as a child," says Norman.¸"She remembered the aged Isaac and Elizabeth Brashear, living in her father's home, being 13 years old when Elizabeth died.¸She knew her father was born in old Orange County, NC, as son of Robert C. Brashear.¸She resolutely lived in the past, her memories reinforcing family traditions."¸Much of what we know, today, seems to derive from her reports. ¸¸¸¸There were six heirs who reached adulthood, as is indicated by a deed in Lawrence Co, TN, when Berry Brashears and Elizabeth Franklin sold their shares in 1856:

¸¸¸¸The 1825 Tax Lists of White Co, TN (ref: Index to Early Tennessee Tax Lists, by Byron and Barbara Sistler) lists two brothers, Isaac and Jacob Brashears, among others from SC: Isaac Breshears, Jeremiah Breashears, John Breshears, Thomas Breshears, Jacob Byshears,

¸¸¸¸Isaac Brashears/Beshears died c1830, his wife having pre-deceased him.¸ His sons Isaac and George were taken in by their uncle Jacob in White Co, TN. In 1834, Jacob "gave" them to Hartwell Scruggs in White Co (see court record below under Jacob), while he relocated to Lawrence Co, TN.¸ Isaac's daughter, Martha Matilda Brashears, age 3, was sent by stagecoach to Lawrence Co, TN and raised from the age of 3 by her grandparents, John and Mary (Berry) Brashears.¸After Martha married in 1846, Mary Mathena, one of Jacob's daughters, then lived with John and Mary.

Family of Isaac Brashears/Beshears:

105. m iv. Thomas BOSHEAR*** {23112}, born 1771/1772.

106. m v. James BOSHEAR*** {23304}.

NOTES for Henrieta:

Henrieta could have been the daughter of PHILLIP PRATHER SR., and RELATIVE to ELIZABETH PRATHER who married JESSE BRASHEAR. This would have given her a claim to the PHILLIP PRATHER ESTATE which she and MIDDLETON were called to administer to.

JESSE BRASHEARS OF WARREN CO-LAND GRANT

Ref: Thank you, Georgene, for the Xeroxes of Tennessee Land Grant #3300. Here's how I read it- Comment by Charles Brashears:

The State of Tennessee ¸No. 3300 To all whom these presents shall come¸GREETING:

Know Ye, That by virture of part of Certificate No. 611, dated March 10th 1810, issued by the legislature of West Tennessee to Abraham Wright and Jason Thompson and entered on the 11th of December 1810, by No. 5584

...there is granted by the said state of Tennessee unto Jesse Brashear, assignee of the said Abraham Wright and Jason Thompson

...a certain tract or parcel of land, containing twenty three acres, lying in Warren County, in the first District in a hollow known by name of bare hollow, on the waters of the main East fork of the three forks of Stones River¸eginning at a poplar marked with the letters W.M., being the South East corner of survey or entry in the name of Charles Rudy for eight acres, thence East sixty and one half poles to a ?xtxxxat? standing on the West side of a steep hill, thence North sixty one poles to a Small White oak, thence West sixty and a half poles to a stake in the East boundary line of said Charles Rudy's eight acre survey, then with his line South Sixty one poles to the Beginning, and including the house and improvements whereon William Middleton(Brashears) Junr lives. Surveyed 23rd March 1811 by Jesse Brashear, D.C.

with the hereditaments and appurtenances¸o have and to hold the said tract or parcel of land, with its appurenances, to the said Jesse Brashear

and his heirs forever¸n witness whereof Willie Blount Governor of the state of Tennessee, hath herunto set his hand and caused the great seal of the state to be affixed, at Knoxville, on the Seventh day of August in the year of our Lord on thousand eight hundred and eleven and of the Independence of the United States the thirty sixth.

By the Governor, /s/ R. Houston, Secretary. Willie Blount

This is apparently the tract of land where Betsy lived in 1820, where she was taxed, and from where their children spread out into the neighboring hollows and valleys. There is no William Brashear , Nathan Brashear, nor Middleton Brashear Jr mentioned, along with Jesse Brashear; only a neighbor, Charles Rudy, and a tenant, William Middleton Jr. What is even more interesting to me are the initials after Jesse's name and that he surveyed his own land (today, that would be considered a conflict of interests): What in the world does "D.C." stand for? "District Clerk"? That is a "C", isn't it? I've seen some old grants with "D.S." after a man's name, to stand for "District Surveyor." But this one stumps me.

NOTES for Basil:

...My grandfather [f JOHN ALFRED BRASHEARS], BASIL BRASHEARS owned a tavern or inn in Brownsville, on what is now called market street. Here he entertained Lafayette in 1825. Although my mother was only six years old at the time of his visit, she remembered -- or maybe was told by older persons-- that she was one of the children who strewed flowers on the sidewalk where Lafayette walked to the tavern. A story of the old tavern told to me by my father is well worth recording. A company of soldiers on their way to the Mexican war stopped over in Brownsville. The officers were put up in the hostelry; the soldiers, or most of them, found accomodations in the barn; but some of their muskets, which had been left loaded, were stacked in the kitchen. During the night a storm passed over the town. A flash of lightning hit the kitchen, exploded the charge of powder in the muskets, and of course stirred up a general commotion in the hostelry. The old stone tavern is still standing, and the room occupied by Lafayette was shown to me on occasion of my visit to Brownsville on the hundredth anniversary of the founding of the town.[ID:6975].

1785...One BROWN was THOMAS BROWN and his tombstone had this inscription "Here lies the body of THOMAS BROWN, who once was the owner of this town, who departed this life Mar 1797, 59 yrs." Brownsville was laid out in 1785. The following list are persons who bought their lots from the original propieters. Dates are dates recorded, viz: BASIL BROWN SR. 1793; BASIL BROFWN 1791; JOHN AYERS 1794; BASIL BRASHEARS 1795; WILLIAM COX 1795; WILLIAM HOGG 1796; ROBERT AYERS 1794; [familiar names to GH].

NOTES for Zadock, Sr.:

1792...[Letter from Sherborn Anderson - desc of Benjamin BRASHEARS - [ID17203] 1776... Zadock is listed as serving in the Revolution from Ann Arundel Co., MD ...Now to the family of ZEDOCK BRASHEAR: I have picked up a few things here and there in this Parish [East Baton Rouge], besides references in the AMERICAN STATE PAPERS and the Baton Rouge Spanish Papers [up to 1810]. Besides ZEDOCK [here 1792], there was PHILIP BRASHEAR, a JOHN BRASHEAR (Uncle ? - father of Henry Alex. Breshears?), ALEXANDER BRASHEAR who may be son of Phillip. [Who is Alexander - could be Alexander Bookster of Baton Rouge, seen as A.L. Brashier in LA and MO) - GH.]

1780-1803...Phillip made altogether 50 claims to various land sites in Feliciana. Asa settled in 1798. AMERICAN STATE PAPERS state that Phillip BRASHEARS settled in the area in 1774, but Phillip BRASHEARS was a little too old to be son of Samuel [he was son of JESSE-GH]. A Samuel was interdiced in 1816, had 6 children whom the court states are very young. WILLIAM BRASHEAR is eldest son & appointed curator for CASSANDRA; LURANER [Lorena?]; SOPHIA d 1844; _____; & ______.

ZADOCK BRASHEARS LAND CONVEYANCES: East Baton Rouge. 1826...20 Aug, Z.B & JOHN ALLEN ("TBS#95?) buy land in E.B.R. 1827...21 Apr, Z.B. mortgages land 18 miles North of B.R.
1828...18 Dec, Z.B. sells 100 arp 7 miles above the Fort at B.R.

Mrs. Charlotte Carpenter, widow of Zaddock, late of the Parish deceased, sells to above of West Feliciana, represenatived by their father Thomas Dorch of this Parish. A certain tract of land [of separate paraphanalia property of Mrs. Brashears] 20 miles from town of Baton Rouge between Sandy Creek and Comite River, containing 690 acres originaly granted to her deceased father by US Govt. bounded: North Mrs Norwood; East L [Lem?] Forbes; West Rudwell & South Dr. Atkinson

1843...MARY BRASHEARS NEVILLE widow of George NEVILLE attests that her father JAMES BRASHEAR who owned 640 acres on the AMITE RIVER in St. Helen's Parish was killed in the invasion of NEW ORLEANS by the BRITISH in 1815. [James's heirs may be some of those unidentified in Lawrenceburg TN records - GH].

At the Treaty of Dancing Rabbit, Zaddock Brashears [Sr.], received land in TWP 16, R1 E Sec. 18, Sumpter Co., Alabama, probably by virtue of his marriage to RACHEL [DURANT?], who was an Indian. Zaddock disposed of his vast holdings in Feliciana Parish and moved to Alabama. Years later, all Indians were placed in the Indian Reservation in Oklahoma. From Juanita Cline, 4426 Rougon Road, Ft. Allen, LA. 70767. Here are the Indian descendants of Jesse and Elizabeth Prather Brashears. [lineage lists that follow].

...Pg. 318: Old Zadock married a VAUGHN. They were mighty near full blood {Choctaw?}. They were all French. Old Zadock had four brothers. They did not have Chocktaw blood. From testimony of JOSEPHINE JONES, " Old Zadock was a Scotsman. His wife Susan {VAUGHN} Was a 1/2 breed Choctaw. Jesse and Zadoc were brothers of JOSEPHINE'S mother.

...pg 320: It is correct that ZADOCK SR. and VAUGHN and JESSE lived in SUMPTER CO., Alabama.

Note : Georgene has  ALEXANDER BOOKTER and a HENRY BRASHEAR sic as living in NEWBERRY CO., SC., 1810 - or at least paying taxes there. That is adj to Laurens Co., SC. [just a note on my map - must look again - Now we have an ALEXANDER BRESHEAR? CONNECTION - right?]. So is this the ALEXANDER BRAZER who claimed land in Livingston Co., Ky., in 1803 along with WILLIAM BRAZER; JAMES BRAZER; JOHN BRAZER and the Aquilla Clan? Also the ALEXANDER who witnessed in the Court in Greenville Co.?

According to the account in "TBS", Cordelia was much older than the other siblings in the family of Marsham & Lucy Phelps Brashears. If she married in 1799, she would have been born between 1770-74 or t-abts. Is this an error in linkage - or statistics ? She should have been born abt 1799 to have married this Marsham. NOTES for Julia:

...I [John A Brashears] regret that I cannot trace the history of my family on my mother's side back further than my gr-father and gr-mother. Their birthplaces I am not even certain of, although, from the meager information I have been able to obtain, my gr-father, NATHANIEL SMITH, was probably from Massachusetts, and my gr-mother from PHOENIXVILLE, PA. ...My mother Julia Smith Brashears was one of six children. When she was a girl she worked in the old cotton mills in Allegheny, in one of which Andrew Carnegie and his father worked when they came from Scotland. Mother's people lived near the old Aqueduct, and one day she fell in. Grandmother saw her fall, and she ran, jumped in, and caught mother just as she was going down for the third time and saved her life. Before her marriage to my father, Julia Smith was a school teacher, and, due to his long ill health, she pursued this occupation at intervals after marriage.

BRASHEAR - The Autobiography of a Man who loved the Stars", 1924: Basil Brown Brashears was known as "BROWN BRASHEARS", was one of fourteen children. He was born in Brownsville 21 Nov 1817. He was a quiet man, and although he lived to celebrate his golden wedding in Pittsburg, where he died 30 Dec 1890, he was not a strong or well man. He had learned the trade of saddler, a very useful business in his early days, as the old town of Brownsville was on the NAtional Pike over which was transported all the freight from it's eastern terminus to Wheeling, from whence it was carried by flat-boat or canal-boaat to points on the Ohio River. ...My mother, Julia Smith Brashears, was one of six children of Nathaniel smith.

NOTES for Mrs.:

Isabella who is registered in the AMERICAN STATE PAPERS - Territorial Land Claims in Florida, for lots in PENSECOLA, founded upon MESNE CONVEYANCES, passed before the governor, alcale or notory, which purported to have been made gratuitously by SPANISH and BRITISH GOVERNMENTS, and which have been confirmed by the undersigned COMMISSIONERS: MRS. ISABELLA BRASHEAR, [must be the widow of Alexander "Brookster", alias Brashear]. This could be the person, who is adding to the confussion as to who the ALEXANDER BRAZER who had land grant in Livingston County KY., in 1803, is. Since there was an "ELEC" BREASHEAR who was close by WILLIAM BREASHEAR in "Brumbaughs" oaths of Fidelity list for MD., who has been unidentified, I wonder if this is him. He was in the same area as WILLIAM ; RICHARD and BENJAMIN BRASHEAR'S CLAN in the Mississippi territory.

NOTES for Alexander:

The name Brasher has evidently become distorted in the transfers of title through the Spanish Government. However Isabella was definately using the spelling BRASHEAR for her lots in PENSECOLA, Spanish West Florida, as a Widow. [presumably the same person as wife of Alex. BROOKTER].
