Lavery, ó Labhradha A Gaelic surname; descendant of Labhraidh meaning ‘speaker’. A sept of Down, Who were based at Mag rath, now Moira in the Barony of Lower Iveagh. There were at three branches;-bán ‘white;-ruadh ‘red’; and-tréan ‘strong’. Branches migrated to Kilkenny and Galway. Also see Armstrong, and Lavery. In 1890 Lavery was principally found in Armagh, Antrim and Down, and the estimated number of bearers was 2,285. In the United States it is the 8,820th most numerous surname with an estimated 2,750 bearers.
