Jesse Gilbert Chancellor married Mary Lou Pinkerton on September 04, 1860 in Smith County, Texas. They had 8 children: Thomas Russell, John Lee, Carrie Corah (my great grandmother), Nannie Ellen, Sarah L. "Sallie", Malissie "Lissie", Mary Ann and Martha Mamie.

All of the children were born in Smith County, Texas around the city of Tyler. Mary Lou Pinkerton died on May 16, 1877 as is buried in Smith County, Texas.

6 years after Mary Lou's death, Jesse Gilbert Chancellor move his family of 8 children from Smith County, Texas to Comanche/Mills County where he lived in Newburg until his death.

John Lee Chancellor was born February 20, 1863 in Tyler, Smith County, Texas. He moved with his father, Jesse Gilbert Chancellor, to Comanche/Mills County around 1883.

John Lee Chancellor married Sallie Isabell Cunningham (daughter of James Herman and Sarah Ann Gordner Cunningham) on November 03, 1892 in Comanche County, Texas.

They had eight children to their union: Effie Gertrude, Gilbert Wellington, Thomas Russell, Nina, William Pickens, John Chester, Beulah and Lena Bell. All the children were born in Democrat, Mills County, Texas.

John Lee Chancellor passed away on October 30, 1931 in Democrat, Mills County, Texas I am still trying to locate the burial location for John Lee. I am told he is buried in Mullin, but do not have any information to back that up!

Sallie Isabell Chancellor passed away years later in Cherokee County, Texas (her date of death and burial location is unconfirmed)

Nannie is the daughter of Jesse Gilbert Chancellor and Mary Lou Pinkerton.

She was born May 10, 1867 in Smith County, Texas and lived there until after her mother died and in 1883 she moved with her father, brothers and sisters to Comanche/Mills County.

She married Joseph Jackson Cunningham on March 3, 1887 in Comanche County, Texas. He was previously married and had 4 children when his first wife passed away. It is so hard for me to believe that Nannie was only 16 years old when she married Joseph Jackson! He was 35 years old!!!!

A Poem For Nannie

I found your photo in my father's box of precious memories that he held dear.
There was just something about your presence in your beautiful clothes of yesteryear.

For the next twenty two years or longer your photo hung upon my wall.
I didn't know a thing about you and the likelihood seemed small.

Printed on the back in pencil was the name of Nannie Cunningham.
Not another clue as to who you were, only your name written perhaps by your mother's hand.

I stared into your eyes of blue as I happened to pass your way.
It was more than just your countenance that mesmerized me every day.

I saw through the fading hands of time that marked the days gone by.
I wondered how you related to me for I knew there was a family tie.

And you stared back as if to say please don't ever forget.
I laughed, I loved, I cried, I lived with many joys and many regrets.

My love for family and desire to know all those in my ancestral line
drove me passionately to find the secrets of another place and time.

I hunted and searched through thousands of names and suddenly there you were.
No longer a mystery in my family tree - your place in my life assured.

You still remain in your special place in my family room upon the wall.
As I walk by, I'm still mesmerized and I can hear your silent call.

Much more than just a photo of a relative you'll always be
For I know who you are, Nannie Cunningham - a special great Aunt to me.
