Linda,

Thanks for your comments.

1.   I understand your sincerity in wanting to protect the integrity of genealogy. Believe it or not genealogy and not history drives me to see Betty Duke's assertions to the end. It is not my goal to mongrelize families. I am well aware of the unanswered questions both pro and con and on both sides. All must be eventually challenged. The final truth will be a win for all.

2.    Betty thoughts on James L. Courtney: Since he was not on the 1850 Census she wonders if he was born to Stephen & Dianna Courtney. He does appear on the 1860 Census and in the Union Army. Because JLC has a different description in TX than the war record shows she feels this is evidence of two separate people. Somehow and at sometime she feels Jesse took on the identity of JLC. Yes, I know there is a ways to go to fully explain this.

3.   I had thought for some reason that Susan lived in Grayson County at one time. She was buried in Wichita Co.

4.    Any idea why many of the James Gang and associates such as Bill Anderson came to Texas?

5.    Do you think my Laban may have been the son of William James Sr. who married Rachel Dennis in Grainger Co., TN in 1802? Your tidbits on Laban matched what I had.

Thanks.

Disclaimer and Message from David Hedgpeth:

Dear Reader,

The purpose of the letters and responses I have written on the Jesse James-James L. Courtney controversy is to fully and fairly examine all sides of the issue. It is a good possibility that my family in Texas is linked to Jesse James and James L. Courtney, so I have a driving personal interest to know the truth. For future generation and our peace of mind I feel moved to see this process to the end. My opinions and viewpoints today will modify as new information comes forth. Likewise, I hope all can say and mean that. Sometimes I may be wrong. If I make a statement in error, let me know and I will gladly correct it. If though it is a difference of opinion, then all are entitled to their own. I try to be careful in criticizing only the issues and not individuals. It may seem at times I am getting close to that but that is not my intent because doing so would be unproductive. I do try to engage everyone to broaden their perspective and work together for a common good to find the whole truth on this important family and historical issue.

I invite your input pro or con on the Genforum or to me directly. If you have an interest, then your help is needed.

Thanks to all,
