To CeCe in Tennessee:

You have claimed to deal in facts not fiction. This sounds very persuasive on the surface, but is that what you are now accomplishing? It amazes me how many will challenge Betty's statements and not talk to the original source, which of course is Betty. I seriously ask you, are you really open to the truth? Will you so boldly print something in Betty's favor, as you have against, when you find it? I hope you are fair-minded and not just focused on sensational criticism and bias journalism. Unless you want to leave the readers with a slanted viewpoint I suggest that you cover all, not part of the subject. This would be credible journalism, unless such a thing is an oxymoron. (Just kidding.) You have interviewed only one person and do not know what was said or done away from her presence. Do you think that Betty would want the risk of purposely misquoting or misrepresenting her dealings with a state law enforcement agency? Don't you think that such an organization would have challenged Betty if her statements were false? I think that if you reread Betty's book on this subject then you will know her official claim. Then you may not assume all that you do. The people at the Texas Department of Public Safety had an opportunity to review in advance what was to be printed in the book concerning their work. They then did not object to what Betty presented.

Betty is adamant that she has prudently represented the truth.

On August 31, 1997, Kent Biffle of the Dallas Morning News did a story called, "Digging into Jesse James Whereabouts." He quizzed Betty about the book and the findings of the Texas Department of Public Safety, including the sophisticated computer examination. The reporter contacted the agency and they did not counter Betty's claim.

Remember that the Texas Department of Public Safety was only one of three agencies involved in the study of the photos. The Austin Police Department and Visionics are the other two agencies. All were in agreement that there were picture matches.

I realize there are some, maybe including you that want to find the chinks in Betty's armor. I believe she has fairly stated what is fact and what is the unknown. She is an interested party and would be happy to give a telephone interview to you if you want to make that a part of your journalistic exploration.

Contact me by e-mail and I will forward her telephone number to you, if you are also an interested party.

Disclaimer and Message from David Hedgpeth:

Dear Reader,

The purpose of the letters and responses I have written on the Jesse James-James L. Courtney controversy is to fully and fairly examine all sides of the issue. It is a good possibility that my family in Texas is linked to Jesse James and James L. Courtney, so I have a driving personal interest to know the truth. For future generation and our peace of mind I feel moved to see this process to the end. My opinions and viewpoints today will modify as new information comes forth. Likewise, I hope all can say and mean that. Sometimes I may be wrong. If I make a statement in error, let me know and I will gladly correct it. If though it is a difference of opinion, then all are entitled to their own. I try to be careful in criticizing only the issues and not individuals. It may seem at times I am getting close to that but that is not my intent because doing so would be unproductive. I do try to engage everyone to broaden their perspective and work together for a common good to find the whole truth on this important family and historical issue.

I invite your input pro or con on the Genforum or to me directly. If you have an interest, then your help is needed.

Thanks to all,
