Notes and Clues from Lucky

Lucky interviewed a Mr. Walton, who is the son of the Mrs. Walton, who submitted the information included in "Mills County - The Way It Was". and he recalled being told " Some of the graves - unmarked- belong to a family that was trying to cross the (Colorado) River and got caught in a flood...and they were all drowned. No-one knew who they were." He doesn't know how many were in the family.

Lucky also has a lead on another person to interview and will see what clues we may find then

Notes and Clues from Sharon

On July 31, 1998, I (Sharon Ivy) was in the Goldthwaite Memorial Cemetery, working on a query for another family when I parked near the Roach Family Plot in Section 2, block 6. (have to look up the plot number later) I do not know if these Roach's are related to the Roach's in the Nabors Creek Cemetery but I noted their head stones anyway, as one of them was from the same area in Ireland. Also in the same Section and Block , 2 plots away is the Ballard and Fox Plot (there was a Marion R. Ballard buried there as well as in Nabors Creek)

Obituary for Judge Roach, transcribed from a fair reverse image copy from Microfilm of the Goldthwaite Eagle, dated Jun 6, 1914

JUDGE ROACH DEAD

Judge Matt Roach died at his home in this city Wednesday night at midnight, after a long illness with heart trouble and complications.

Judge Roach was one of the oldest citizens of the town and county, both in point of years and in time of residence. He was a citizen of the Seaterfitt community in Lampasas County, prior to locating here and filled positions of honor and trust in that county as well as in this county. He was elected commissioner for this precinct in the early days of the county's organization and was one of the officials when the first court house was built. He was possessed of splendid business qualifications and was looked upon as one of the county's leading financiers up to the time of his declining health forced him to retire. But even after he withdrew from the business community, some of his clients continued to look to him to transact their business for them. He was a well read man and could discuss almost any subject with interest to his hearers and always took great interest in politics and other public affairs. He always had a kindly greeting and a pleasant word for those with whom he came in contact and was a high minded gentleman in every particular.

Judge Roach was a devoted member of the Catholic Church and died strong in the faith. His funeral service was according to the ritual of the Catholic Church, the pastor of the church hers, whose home is in Brownwood, officiating at the service. A large congregation of friends, neighbors and relatives assembled at the residence and followed the remains to their last resting place in the Odd Fellows Cemetery Thursday Afternoon.

He leaves a wife and two nephews and one niece, all members of his household, besides other relatives in other parts of the state and in Ireland and to all of them the sympathy of the people goes out in this sad bereavement.

FATAL WRECK OCCURS NEAR HERE WED. AM

GEORGE BALLARD IS KILLED, JIM WEATHERS BADLY INJURED

George Ballard, 22, was instantly killed and Jim Weathers 21, was seriously injured early Wednesday morning when their car ran off the highway at a culvert and hit a tree in the ditch.

The wreck, which occurred about a mile and a half from Goldthwaite on the San Saba highway, was discovered about 7:10 Wednesday morning by George Bohannon, who drives a school bus. George Ballard was dead when found and Jim Weathers was rushed to a Brownwood hospital in a Fairman Company ambulance, accompanied by Dr. J. M. Campbell, who gave first aid treatment.

Dr. Campbell said the bodies had apparently lain by the side of the road three or four hours before discovery. Jim Weathers was driving the car which was coming to Goldthwaite form San Saba and it is thought he went to sleep at the wheel. Officers who investigated the wreck stated that the car apparently started leaving the highway 50 yards beyond the culvert, crossing over to the left of the road and went down the ditch by the side of the bridge, striking a tree, the impact throwing the occupants into the windshield. Both were cut badly about the face.

The position of the small car under the tree made it hard to see by passing motorists during darkness. George Bohannon school bus driver, left Goldthwaite at ten minutes to 7 Wednesday morning, drove past the bridge about a mile and a half. On his way back to town he discovered the car, saw what had happened, and went to the G. W. Jackson residence nearby and phoned town for help. In the meantime, Roy Ledbetter passed, saw the wreck and rushed to town and reported the accident.

Dr. Campbell stated yesterday afternoon that Jim Weathers, barring complications, had a chance to recover. He was badly cut about the face, his collarbone and three ribs were broken and he received a fracture over the right ear.

Young Weathers, son of Mr. and Mrs. Steve Weathers, has lived in Goldthwaite all his life. He has been employed at Berry Brothers Service Station. George Ballard was the son of Mrs. W. W. Fox, and had been employed at Fairman Company.

Funeral services for Mr. Ballard were held yesterday afternoon at 3 o'clock in the Baptist Church here. Interment followed in Odd Fellows Cemetery, a half mile from where he received the fatal injury.

NOTE: I was unable to find an obit for either person but Jim Weathers must of passed away also because in the next issue of the Goldthwaite Eagle was a Thank You Note from the Weathers family that I copied below at the end of this page. I did not see a Thank you note or any mention about George Ballard other than the accident itself. Will try to find obits for Marion R. Ballard in 1923 and see if George Ballard's mother Iva is mentioned George Ballard was buried next to Marion R. Ballard and was the Fourth person person to be buried there.

The order of Burials are:

Mrs G., M. Long 1911
Marion R. Ballard 1923 (Was he named after the Marion R. Ballard buried at Nabors Creek? It is noted that they both died in their 30's)
George L. Ballard 1941 (self)
C. Ballard, 1946 (Possible grandparents to George Ballard) Also born about 10 years before Marion Ballard who is buried at Nabors Creek)
Julia M. Ballard 1949 (possible grandparents to George Ballard)
Willie W. Fox 1981
Iva Ballard Fox 1984 (possible Mother to George Ballard)
Joe Hodge Fox 1995 (possible half brother or cousin to George Ballard)
