1693 JOHN (SR.) MARRIAGE SARAH HODGE

Before 6 September 1693 JOHN (SR.) married Sarah Hodge – probably in Ipswich, Essex County, Massachusetts. JOHN (SR.) and Sarah had at least ten children:

1695: FIRST CHURCH OF BEVERLY, MASSACHUSETTS

On 17 September 1695 JOHN (SR.) and Sarah were admitted to the Lord’s Supper in the First Church of Beverly, Massachusetts.

1698 (before November): LIFE IN CONNECTICUT

Before November 1698 JOHN (SR.) and family moved to Preston, Connecticut as a church was embodied in Preston 16 November 1698, and “they who offered themselves as matter for a church, having been members of other churches, in full communion were brought into order by giving their consent to articles of faith and renewal of covenant.” There were twelve persons listed, among whom was JOHN (SR.).

On 13 April 1699 at a County Court for New London County, Connecticut JOHN (SR.), plaintiff, appealed from the judgment of Captain Benjamin Brewster J.P., in a suit against Lieutenant Daniel Mason of Stonington, defendant, respecting title to land improved by said WELCH and claimed by Mason. The Court found in favor of the plaintiff (JOHN SR.).

1699: LAND DISPUTE

But on 19 September 1699 at the New London Court, Lieutenant Daniel Mason of Stonington brought suit against JOHN WELCH (SR.) of Preston for having entered on land northwest of the house which JOHN WELCH (SR.) then lived in near Pachaug in Preston. The Court advised JOHN (SR.) to choose one surveyor from Stonington and one from Preston. From the surveyors it was learned that JOHN (SR.) first lived in Pachaug, originally a part of Preston but later called the North Society; in October 1815, it was made a separate town and called Griswold.

1702: BUILDING A HOME

Before June 1702 JOHN (SR.) had built a house “near the mountain,” (probably Rixtown Mountain) in Preston. On 1 June 1702 John Stanton sold to JOHN (SR.) one hundred acres of land in the township of Preston. JOHN (SR.) then sold the land to Samuel Herrick Junior of Beverly.

1705: FREEMAN

In 1705 JOHN (SR.) was admitted a Freeman of Norwich, Connecticut.

1705: BUYING AND SELLING LAND

On 28 January 1705 JOHN (SR.) bought land from Thomas Leffingwell for 23 pounds. On 13 September 1715 JOHN (SR.) sold the land to Ambrose Blunt for 202 pounds and 10 shillings.

On 16 September 1715 JOHN (SR.) purchased of Captain John Parke of Preston “land near Pockatannuck in the township of Norwich.”

1726: THE LONG SOCIETY

On 11 October 1716 the inhabitants on the east side of the river commenced as early as 1699 to petition for a minister and church on their side for convenience and safety in attending service. JOHN (SR.) was one of those who signed the petition. Not until 1726 was permission granted by the General Assembly of Connecticut for a Church Society on the east side of the river. The Society was called Long Society.

1728: DEATH OF JOHN (SR.)

On 6 May 1728 JOHN (SR.) died in Norwich, New London County, Connecticut.
