JAMAICA ALMANACS

The Jamaica Almanac was published from 1672 to 1880. It was not, however, until 1811 that these Almanacs started to include a list of landowners on the island. This list was given to the Parochial Vestries and included in the 1840 Almanac. It is divided by Parish. Within each Parish names are alphabetized, but they are not alphabetized within each
letter of the alphabet.

There were 19 Parishes included in the 1840 Almanac. Kingston was excluded. The Almanac contained an explanatory note, "The extensive length of this Roll prevents our inserting the Names of the Householders of the City and
Parish." It also included a note concerning the Parish of Portland: "The list for the parish of Portland could not be obtained either from the Receiver-General's Office or the Clerk of the Vestry when this sheet was put to Press, but should it be obtained previous to publication, it shall be inserted in another part." Evidently it was not received, as it does
not appear in the Almanac. Kingston and Portland, however, appear in the 1838 Almanac, and can be found there on this web site.
