"Heritage is a thoroughly modern concept... heritage belongs to the final quarter of the twentieth century. It is true, of course, that in one sense heritage, like sex, is as old as the world itself...But heritage has outgrown its legal definition...We have constructed heritage because we have a cultural need to do so in our modern age. Heritage is a condition of the late twentieth century." From the opening paragraph of Scotland—the Brand
My name is Jamie ALEXANDER. I live in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. My father emigrated to the US from Scotland right after WWII (ALEXANDER/PETRIE & GRAHAM/ELLIOTT). On my mother's side I have a blend of Ulster Scots and German relatives from southwestern Ohio and Germany (HAMILTON/WILLMAN & BLEIER/RIEBEL).

Harley on horse and Thomas behind plowThe gent on the horse is my maternal Grandpa, Harley Stewart HAMILTON, and that is his father, Thomas Wilson HAMILTON behind the plow. I believe the photo was taken at Thomas' farm in Adams County, Ohio. Though obviously attached to his rural roots as evidenced by this photo, Harley left the farm to become first a student, then soldier and after the 1914-1918 war, a superintentent of schools and later an attorney in the Trust Department of the Provident Bank in Cincinnati, Ohio.

My maternal grandmother, Edna Rachel HAMILTON nee RIEBEL, mother of five, was a poet. She grew up on the banks of the Ohio river in the little town of Chilo. Her father ran the Chilo-Bradford Ferry. Edna went "up the hill" to Felicity to go to school, and later graduated from Miami University at Oxford, Ohio. She was a member of the Greater Cincinnati Writers's League, and President of the Women's Press Club of Cincinnati and the Cincinnati Chapter of the National League of American Pen Women. She led a very active life.Edna R. Hamilton

This photo was taken in Edinburgh in 1901. My paternal Grandpa 'Podge' (George Harold Petrie ALEXANDER) is the little one. His two older brothers are Cecil and John. John, the eldest, was a pilot with the Royal Flying Corps in the 1914-1918 war. Cecil and Podge also served in that war.John, Cecil and Podge, 1901Margaret with the family dog, ca. 1950

My paternal grandmother, Alice Margaret Millar Alexander nee Graham, was, like Podge, dedicated to tennis and golf. Family lore says 'Granny Margaret' played for Scotland at Wimbledon, and also that her father, Robert Graham (an engineer) worked on the Forth Rail Bridge (see also), but I don't have either 'fact' documented.

Unknown Family
This is a mystery photo. I don't know who the people are, nor do I know where the house is. Any assistance dating or identifying the photo would be much obliged!
