OBITUARY: The Lexington Leader, Friday, January 30, 1920. J. W. Barnett Born Feb 4, 1844 in Calloway Co., KY, died Jan 24, 1920 in Lexington, OK, aged 76 years. Mr. Barnett was married Mar 17, 1867 to Miss Rebecca Hutchinson of New Concord, KY. To this union were born 7 children, 3 sons and 4 daughters, all of whom are living but one sone. Mr. Barnett moved with his family to Kansas 1874 from KY. In 1890 they left Kansas and moved to the old Indian Territory, and from there in 1899 they cast their lot with the people of Lexington, at which place they have since resided. In Mr. Barnett's young manhood he served 4 years in the Confederate Army being a member of Co. A., 32nd Mississippi Regiment. He, in early life, identified himself with the Christian faith, having joined the Christian Church 45 years ago, and has since lived a consecrated Christian, and at the hour of his death said he was prepared to go. That he was of great courage and physical strength, is evidenced by the fact he carried the mail between Lexington and Purcell for a matter of 14 years, fording that most treacherous of rivers, the South Canadian. Failing eyesight caused him to abandon this work with 2 years of his contract unexpired. In 1904 he served as councilman from the first ward and always took an interest in civic development of Lexington, Mr. Barnett became totally blind some 10 years ago and at first was most unhappy over his condition, but as time went on he became reconciled, and the remaining years of his life were ones of great patience, kindness and charity toward all. Funeral services were held Sunday from the Central Christian Church, the ceremonies being conducted by the Rev. L. L. Reeves of Lindsey, formerly pastor of the Baptist Church here and a personal friend of the children of the deceased. All of the children were here but a daughter, Mrs. Coleman of Elk City. The community sympathizes deeply with the sorrowing wife, bereft of her companion, and to her and the entire family, the Leander extends sympathy.

He appeared on the census in 1850-70 Calloway Co. KY. OBITUARY: Wynnewood New Era, Thursday, March 7, 1907. N. T. Barnett. Last Respects Paid to Aged Confederate Veteran and Honored City Official. The funeral services of Mr. N. T. Barnett, mayor elect of the city of Wynnewood in the recent Democratic party, were conducted at his residence at 2 o'clock last Friday by Rev. T. J. Williamson of Pauls Valley. Mr. Barnett had been suffering for some time from lagrippe and at times he thought that he would recover forthwith, but the grim monster that is master of human destinies withheld that blessing from him and last Thursday evening about 1 o'clock he passed into the great ocean of the unknown. For the past 2 years Mr. Barnett has been holding the office of alderman from the first ward, and has served his people so acceptably that his friends induced him to make the race for the office of mayor before the democratic primary. He was elected in the primary by an overwhelming vote, which meant his unanimous election in the city election which is to be held in April. It will be of little value to the people of this city for us to go into ecstacies over the life and character of this humble citizen, for he was a living epistle and well known by every citizen of the city. In his quiet unassuming way, he lead every one to extend him a profound respect. He was a man of small means in the world, but not asleep to the needs of his fellow man. In his life time he tasted bitterness that the young people of this country and generation will never know by experience. Having passed through the ruthless crusades of the civil war he knew what it was to be in need and knowing this as he did qualified him better to adjust himself to the calls of humanity about him. In him the man of sorrows had a friend and the hungry had a lavish servant. It was indeed a pathetic sight to stand by his grave side and see his aged comrades--those who had walked with him in the thickest of battles that were waged on an oppressed south by an oppressing north--as they paid their brother a last farewell. The floral display was gorgeous--the Daughters of Confedracy graciously remembered this old veteran, while from the Chapter at Gainsville, TX, came a wreath of flowers to deck his grave that would have been proffered star to shine where'er the master of human destinies has banished light--a fit emblem indeed of this character. First he was rich in Christian grace, uncompromising in the discharge of right, generous with the lavish hospitality of the old patrician south and crowned with those undying virtues that characterizes every Confederate Veteran. In the limelight of the ages may his character shine and his tribe increase. His burial took place in Oak Lawn Cemetery at 3 o'clock under the auspices of the local organization of Odd Fellows of which he was an honored member. The services were attended by a large crown of sad-hearted spectators. He leaves a wife and children. We offer consolation to the bereaved friends and relatives and pray that out of his sacred dust there may rise the sweet incense of his character to flavor the lives of his children.
