Part II – Virginia Deeds
17 day of April 1750. James Barnett of the parish of St.
Mark’s and county of Culpepper to Spencer Bobo of the parish and county
aforesaid . . . 5 shillings money of England all that tract of land containing
one hundred acres situate lying and being in parish and county aforesaid on the
branches of the Rappadan and Robinson Rivers and is bounded . . . near the
ridge between the Rappadan and Robinson Rivers corner to John Medley thence
south one hundred and Eighty two poles to a pine and white oak thence north
seventy degrees west one hundred and eighty two poles to three red oak saplings
thence north fifty four degrees east to the beginning . . . To have and to hold
the said land and premises herein mentioned or intended to be hereby granted .
. . unto the said Spencer Bobo his heirs Executors . . . from the day of
the date hereof for and during one whole year from thence next ensuing and
fully to be compleat and ended yielding and paying therefore the yearly rent of
one pepper corn at the feast of St. Michael the arch-angel if the same be
lawfully demanded to the intent that by virtue of these presents and if the
state for transferring? into possession the said Spencer Bobo may enable to
except of a grant of the reversion and inheritance to him and his heirs
forever. In witness whereof the parties

the said James Barnett for and in consideration of ten pounds current
money of Virginia to him in hand paid by the said Spencer Bobo at and
before the ensealing and delivering of these presents whereof the said James
Barnett doth hereby acknowledge and thereof doth clearly discharge ye said Spencer
Bobo his heirs or assigns by these presents doth alien release and confirm
unto the said Spencer Bobo in his actual possession now being by virtue of a
Bargain and sale to him thereof made for one whole year by Indenture bearing
date the day before these presents and by force of the state for Transferring
uses into possession and to his heirs and assigns all that tract or parcel of
land containing one hundred acres situate lying and being in the parish and
county aforesaid on the branches of the Rappadan and Robinson River near the
Lost Mountains and now In the occupation of the said Spencer Bobo or his
heirs or assigns and all the estate Right Title whatsoever of him the said James
Barnett of all and unto the said premises or any part or parcel thereof To
have and to hold the said land and Premises herein before mentioned which are

of the northern necks office bearing date the twenty eighth day of June 1748
and by the said John Barnett willed to his son James Barnett who
sold the said land to Capt George Neavall deceased late of Fauquier
County who dying before sufficient deeds had been executed for the same by the
said James Barnett and Milly his wife who in peaceable possession
of the same did by his last Will & Testament as recorded in the county
court office of Fauquier give and bequeath the said tract of land to his
daughter Susannah Thompson wife of the said Richd Thompson and Charlotte
and Joanna Thompson daughters of the said Richard and

Indenture made this sixteenth Day of December in the year of our Lord One
Thousand seven Hundred and twenty nine Between John ffarrar of the One
part and John Barnet of the other part witnesseth that the said John
ffarrar for and in consideration of the sum of fforty pounds currant Money
to the said John ffarrar by the said John Barnet in hand paid
hath given granted & Bargained sold, aliened, Enfoeffed and confirmed and
by these presents doth grant Bargain Sell, Alien Enfoeff and confirm unto the
said John Barnet and to his heirs for ever and certain tract or parcell
of land containing One Hundred & Sixty five acres be the same more or less
and bounded as followeth (to witt) being the upper part of a certain tract of
land granted by patent (bearing date the twelfth day of July in the year of our
Lord One thousand seven hundred & eighteen) unto John Barnes Junr
& William Barnes together with all houses, orchards gardens, houses
and other apprutenances to the same belonging To have and to hold the said land
and premises unto him the said John Barnet and to his heirs and assignes
for ever, and the said John ffarrar doth for himself and his heirs
covenant and grant to and with him the said John Barnet and his heirs
and assigns that he the said John Barnet his heirs and against all other
persons whatsoever shall and will warrant and by these presents forever shall
and will warrant and by this presents for ever defend In witness whereof the

part and William Nuckolls of the same County of the other part
Witnesseth that the said Katharine Barnett Jessee Barnett, Thomas Barnett
and Crosha his wife for and in consideration of the sum of Eighty Two
pounds Current money of Virginia to them in hand paid by the said William
Nuckolls at and before the Ensealing and delivery of these presentes the
Receipt wherof the said Katharine Barnett Jessee Barnett, Thomas Barnett
and Crosha his wife doth hereby acknowledge and thereof and every part
thereof doth fully and absolutely acquit exonerate and discharge him the said William
Nuckolls his Heirs Executors administrators and assigns by these presents

Barnett and Crosha his wife in or to the said lands or any part

a court held for Goochland County October the 18th 1763. Thomas Barnett Catharine Barnett,
Mother of the said Thomas and Saracrosha his wife, acknowledged this
Deed to be their acts & Deeds and the said Thomas the Livery of Seizin and
receipt Endorsed which were ordered to be Recorded Then the said Katharine
and Saracrosha (They being first privately relinquished their Rights of
Dower in the Land by this Deed conveyed which was also admitted to Record. At a Court held for Goochland Couty Aug the
17th 1772. Richard Johnson, Wm.
Barnett & Wm.Childers proved this deed to be the act & deed
of Jesse Barnett wch proof was ordered to be certified &
Recorded.

Barnett of the County of Goochland of the one part and Richard Wade
of the same County of the other part Witnesseth that the said John Barnett
for and in consideration of the sum of Forty five pounds curt money of Virga to
him in hand paid by the said Richard Wade the Receipt whereof he doth
hereby acknowledge hath granted Bargained Sold aliened Released and confirmed
and by these presents for himself and his heirs doth Grant bargain sell allian
Release and Confirm unto the said Richard Wade his heirs and assigns
forever one certain tract or parcell of land containing seventy five acres
situate lying and being in Goochland county aforesaid and bounded on the lines
of Richard aforesaid William Bibb John Wade William Henley & Strangman
Hutchins Including Seventy five acres of land be the same more or less
Together with all houses orchards gardens fences woods underwoods waters &
water corses thereon standing growing & being with all profits Comodities
advantages and appurtenances whatsoever to the same belonging or in any wise
appertaining and also the Reversion and Reversions Remainder and Remainders
thereof and of every part and parcel thereof To have and to hold the said tract

Memorandum. That on the sixteenth day August One Thousand Seven Hundred &
Sixty Six peacable and quiet possession of the within granted lands and
premises was made done & delivered by the within named John Barnett
to the within named Richard Wade according to the form and effect of the

Whitlow, Athansius Barnett. At a
Court held for Goochland County August the 19th 1766 John Barnett
acknowledged this deed with the livery of seizin Endorsed to be his acts &
deeds wch wee ordered to be recorded.
This Indenture made this sixteenth day of
August in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and sixty six between
John Whitlow and Katharine his wife of the county of Goochland of
the one part and John Barnett of the same county of the other part. Witnesseth that the said John Whitlow
and Katharine his wife for and in consideration of the sum of fforty
pound currant money of Virginia to them in hand paid by the said John
Barnett the receipt whereof they doth hereby acknowledge hath granted
Bargained . . . one certain tract or parcell containing ninty eight acres and
hald be there more or less situate lying and being in Goochalnd County on the
Branches of Tuckaho Creek wch said parcell of land is the one alf of a tract of
land formerly in the possession of William Whitlow the said William
from under his hand and seal made a deed of conveyance of the said one half o
his land to his son John Whitlow which deed being proved in the County
of Goochland doth plainly appear and bounded on the lines of John Crow,
William Whitlow, John Watson, Richard Clayton and the said Watson to

other good causes and consideration which I bare to my son Athanasins
Barnett have given granted and by these presents do give grant and confirm
unto my son Athanasins Barnett all that my tract or parcell of land
lying in Goochland County on the Branches of Tuckaho Creek containing by
Estimation one hundred acres be the same more or less which tract of land was
purchast of John Whitlow by a deed under the said Whitlow’s hand
and seal which deed being provd and recorded in the county court of Goochland
doth fully appear and is bounded on the lines of John Watson, William
Barnett, George Hancock, and the said John Watson . . . I have
hereunto set set my hand and seal this sixteenth day of August 1773. John

Septemr the 20th 1773 Martha Barnett (a Quaker) Solemnly
affirms as a Witness and William and Edward Barnet proved this
deed with the same affirmation to be the act & deed of John Barnett,
wch was ordered to be recorded.

396 This Indenture made this eighteenth day of June eighteen hundred and two
between Frans L. Campbell and Nancy his wife of the county of
Goochland of the one part and James Barnett of the said county of the
other part witnesseth that the sd Campbell for and in consideration of the sum
of six shillings to him in hand paid by the sd Barnett, the receipt whereof is
hereby acknowledged doth bargain sell and confirm unto the sd Barnett
his heirs exors admrs &c one certain tract or parcel of land lying and
being in the sd county of Goochland containing by survey two hundred nineteen
and half acres beginning at the moth of a gut S 27 « E sixty six chains North
62 ¼ West one hundred and thirty two chains to stumbling Creek thence down the
creek as it meanders to James River thence down the river as it tendeth to the
beginning. To have and to hold the sd
land and premises with the appertinances unto him the sd Barnett his
heirs exors &c in fee simple to occupy and enjoy the sd land and premises
with appurtenances Nevertheless it is to be understood that at the death or
resignation of the sd James Barnett one half of the sd land and premises
will revert to the sd Campbell his heirs or assigns free from the
molestation of any person or persons in testamoney whereof the sd Campbell
hath hereunto set his hand and affixed his seal the day and year first above

At a Court held for Goochland county July 19th 1802 This deed
was presented in court proved by the oath of Walter Clopton William Lewis
and Elisha Tucker to be the act and deed of Francis L. Campbell a
party thereto and ordered to be recorded.

This deed indented made and entered into this second day of April in the year
one thousand eight hundred and three between James Barnett and Ann his
wife of the county of Goochland of the one part and David Bullock (Atty)
of county of Louisa of the other part witnesseth that the said James Barnett
and Ann his wife for and in consideration of the sum of thirteen hundred
pounds to them in hand paid by the said David Bullock the receipt
whereof they do hereby acknowledge and confess and from every part thereof
fully acquit said Bullock and his heirs have and by these presents do
give grant bargain sell alien and confirm to the said David Bullock and
his heirs forever a certain tract or parcell of land situate laying and being
in the county of Goochland on James River containing by estimation the quantity
of two hundred and nineteen and a half acres be the same more or less and
bounded as follows to wit Beginning at the mouth of a gut corner to Will R.
Fleming on the river, thence South 27 « East sixty six chains to Thos E.
Randolphs thence North 62 ¼ West one hundred & thirty two chains to
Stumbling Creek thence with the creek as it meanders to James river thence down
the river to the begining.
To have and to hold the above described
lands and premises with all and every its appurtenances houses woods fisheries
&c to the said David Bullock and his heirs forever and the said James
Barnett and Ann his wife for themselves and their heirs the above
described lands and premises to the said David Bullock and his heirs
will warrant and forever defend clear of the claim or claims of any person or
persons whatsoever. In testimony

18th 1803 This Deed from James Barnett and Ann his
wife to David Bullock attorney was presented in court proved by the
oaths of William Fuqua, William Lewis, and Frederick Harris to be
the act and deed of the said James and ordered to be recorded.

This
Indenture made this 17th day of June 1802 between Thomas Barnett
of the County of Pittsylvania of the one part and John Barnett of the
said County and David Bullock of the County of Louisa of the other part
that is to say for and in consideratin of the sum of six shillings in hand paid
to the said Thomas Barnett by the said John Barnett and David
Bullock – before the signing and delivering of these presents and for the
further securing and indemnifying James Barnett and Francis L.
Campbell of the County of Goochland as Security for the said Thomas
Barnett to a replevy bond given to Smith Young & Hyde on a
Decree of the High Court of Chancery which Decree the said Thomas Barnett
took an appeal to the High Court of apeales which appeal is yet undertuming and
may not be deturming for maney years and that the said securety for fear of
acsidents [sic] wishes to be made safe, for the above Considerations the said Thomas
Barnett hereby bargin and sell and by these presents hath bargined and
soled unto the aforesaid John Barnett and David Bullock the
following property to wit, ten Negroes namely Cirus a man, Sam a
man, Sarah a woman, Venus a woman, Pahants a girl, Dolley
a girl, Rachel a girl, Amey a girl, Ledy a girl, Nance
a girl, they & there Increase also twelve fether beds and furniture and all
of my households furniture of eve [sic] kind whatsoever a four wheal carage
& two whealed shays a waggon & [line
cut off on copy] Milor, one black horse one sorel horse and three bay mares
four oxen and thirty one head of cattle, to them the said John Barnett
& David Bullock thay and thare heirs forever free from the clame or
clames of any person or persons whatsoever, upon the following condishons that
is to say if the said Thomas Barnett shall be cast in the appeal
aforesaid and suffer the sd James Barnett and Francis L. Campbell
to be called on for payment as securety to the said Thomas Barnett to
the bond aforesaid then and in that case the said John Barnett and David
Bullocks is to take into there posestion all or any part of the property
herein named and sell for redy mney so much thereof as will sattisfy the debt
costs – and interest on giveing ten days notice on one of the publick Court
days of the County of Pittsylvania wherein the Estate now lies and Sattisfy and
pay of all the clame that can come against the said James Barnett and Francis
L. Campbell as being Security to the Bond aforesaid in Witnessing hereof
the Thomas Barnett have heareunto asign’d his name and afixed his Seall the day

and State of North Carolina of the one part and Thomas Barnett of the
Town of Danville and State of Virginia of the other part, witnesseth and saith
that for an In consideration of the Sum of One thousand Dollars to him the said
Joseph in had paid the recipt hereof is hereby acknowledge hath this day
bargin and sold and do by these presents bargin sell and deliver unto Thomas
Barnett one certain tract or parcel of land lying and being in the County
of Pittsylvania in the state of Virginia containing two hundred and seven acres
be it the same more or less and being on both sides of Rutledges Creek being
the land deeded to the said Joseph Barnett by Thomas Barnett and
recorded in the County Court of Pittsylvania, the right and title of the above
mentioned land I do hereby convey in fee simple to him the said Thomas
Barnett he his heirs or assigns free from the claim or claims of any person
or persons whatsoever, both in Law and equity given under by hand and seal the

This deed made this sixth day of December in the year of our Lord one thousand
seven hundred and ninety five between Thomas Barnett of the county of
Pittsylvania and state of Virginia of the one part and John Eyrs of the
county of Lancaster and state of Pennsylvania of the other part. Witnesseth and
sayeth that for and in consideration of the sum of five shillings lawful money
of Virginia to him the said Thomas Barnett in hand paid and a further consideration
of the sum of one thousand seven hundred pounds four shillings current money of
the state of Pennsylvania which the said Thomas Barnett owes to Micajah
Richard and Reuben Ford of the state of Pennsylvania and co
partners, the said Thomas Barnett hath this day sold and delivered to
the said Eyrs the following property to wit, twenty three negroes
namely, George, Tom, Isham, Peter, George, Jr., Phill, Reuben, Ambrose,
Sarah, Rachel, Milley, Salley, Letty, Grace, Will, Friday, Sam, Cesar, Peter,
Jr., Dick, Harry, Jack and Jordan together with twenty one head of
cattle, four head of horses, charriot, waggon and gear, and two stills, and all
the stock of goods on hand together with all my household and kitchen furniture
of every kind whatsoever on the following terms that is to say, that whereas
the said Thomas Barnett did on the fourth of October 1794 assign a bond
of John Nicolson of the state of Pennsylvania to the said Micajah
Richard, Reuben Ford to the amount of one thousand seven hundred pounds four
shillings current money of Pennsylvania and there being a likelihood of said Nicolson
becoming insolvent before a judgement could be obtained against him and thereby
the said Thomas Barnett may loose his debt as assignee of the said bond,
and in order to secure the debt aforesaid the said to Micajah Richard,
Reuben Ford for the said Thomas Barnett have made this deed of Trust
to the said John Eyrs as a trustee for the said Richard Ford on
the following condition that is to say if the said Thomas Barnett do
well and truly pay to the said Richard Ford the annual payment of three
hundred pounds current money of Pennsylvania till the whole debt be discharged
then the said property aforesaid is all to be reconveyed to the said Thomas
Barnett again. But if the said Thomas Barnett do fail to make the
annual payment of three hundred pounds as aforesaid then the said Eyrs
as trustee is to sell and pay the annual payment to the said Richard Ford on
giving ten days notice any part of property the said Eyrs shall think
fit to satisfy the same and the said Richard Ford has reassinged the
said Bond to Thomas Barnett again as he may do the best he can to
recover the money due on the bond aforesaid and make such other bargain as he
may think fit, Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal the day and

This Indenture made this third day of October one thousand seven hundred and
ninety five between the Trustees appointed by an Act of Assimbly passed
the twenty third day of November 1793 for...in the said Trustees twenty five
acres of land the property of John Barnett adjoyning Wynne’s falls on
the south side of Dann River in the county of Pittsylvania to be by their or a
majority of them laid off into lots of half an acre each with convenient
streets and establish a Town by the name of Danville of the one part and Thomas
Barnett of the other part, Witnesseth that the said Trustees in conformity
to the above recited act hath sold at publick auction on the fourth day of May
1795 two half acre lots in the said town of Danville numbered one and nineteen
for and in consideration of the sum of twenty five pounds current money of
Virginia to us in hand paid before or at the sealing and delivery of the
receipt whereof we the said Trustees doth hereby acknowledge and thereof doth
acquit and discharge the said Thomas Barnett his heirs and assignees To
have and to hold the said two half acre lots to him the said Thomas Barnett
his heirs or assingees against us...and our sucessors upon the express
conditions that the said Thomas Barnett his heirs or assingees shall
agreeable to the said recited Act erect or build thereon a Dwelling house
sixteen feet square at least with a brick or stone chimney to be completed and
finished fit for habitation with five years to be computed from the fourth day
of May 1795 But should the said Thomas Barnett his heirs or assingees
fail to build on said half acre lots within the time aforesaid the said half
acre lots shall be forfeited and the said Trustees or their successors shall
and may enter upon and sell the same for the benefit of the said Town in the
manner the said recited Act prescribes and directs; But if the said Thomas
Barnett his heirs or assingees shall well and truly build upon and improve
the said half acre lots in the manner and within the limited time aforesaid he
may enjoy the same with all the privileges and immunities of the said Town or
other town not incorporated have, hold or enjoy in witness whereof we have

Boyd and Polley his wife of the county of Halifax of the one part
and John Barnett of the county of Pittsylvania of the other part witnesseth that the said William
Boyd for and in consideration of the sum of sixty five pounds current money
of Virginia to him in hand paid by the
said John Barnett the receipt whereof he doth hereby acknowledge and
thereof doth acquit and discharge him the said John Barnett have by these
presents given granted bargained and sold unto the said John Barnett his
heirs executors administrators or assigns one tract or parcel of land
containing one hundred and two acres more or less lying and being in the county
of Pittsylvania and on the south side of Dann River beginning at a chesnut tree
N 3 degrees W 180 poles to a dead pine in Larkin Dixs line and thence his line
S 57 degrees 17 poles to William Wynns line a corner, thence crossing
the road to the beginning. With all houses orchards, gardens, woods,
underwoods, waters and water courses thereunto belonging or any wise appertaining To have and to hold the said land
and appurtenances unto the said John Barnett his heirs and assigns
forever and the said William Boyd the said land premises together with
the appurtenances thereunto belonging
unto the said John Barnett his heirs and shall and will warrant
forever defend from the right, claim or demand of him the said William Boyd
his heirs or assings and from all and every other person or persons whatsoever.

seven hundred and ninety eight Between John Barnett and James Linn
both of the County of Pittsylvania and State of Virginia Witnesseth that the
said John Barnett for and in consideration of the Bonds hereinafter mentioned and received hath granted Leased
and Devises and by these presents do grand lease and devise unto the said James
Linn and his heirs executors and
assings a certain piece or parcel of land situated on the North west side of the Town of Danville and adjoining
the same Bounded as followeth Viz Beginning at the Corner of William Barnett
and William Spillers Lots, thence with said William Spillers lot
untill across the ally, thence with the
course of the ally from the Town across the branch to a red oak
corner thence a straight course to a
branch of Acters Creeks in the branch below
the town yard thence Southward to a small red oak marked, thence to a
small pine opposite ... yard orchard,
thence to the beginning To have and to hold
the said parcel of land with all the appertenances within ....the said James Linn his heirs and assings from the
first day of May last for and during the Term of Nineteen years ... paying

This Indenture made this 17th day of June 1802 between Thomas
Barnett of the county of Pittsylvania of the one part and John Barnett
of the said county and David Bullock of the county of Louisa of the
other part that is to say, for and in consideration of the sum of six shillings
in hand paid to the said Thomas Barnett by the said John Barnett
and David Bullock before the signing and delivering of these presents
and for the further securing and indemnifying James Barnett and Francis
L. Campbell of the county of Goochland as security for the said Thomas
Barnett to a replevey bond given to Smith Young & Hyde on
a decree of the High Court of Chancery which decree the said Thomas Barnett
took an appeal to the high court of apeals which apeal is yet undetermined and
may not be determined for many years and said securitys for fear of accidents
wishes to be made safe, for the above considerations the said Thomas Barnett
hereby bargains and sell and by these presents hath bargained and sold unto the
aforesaid John Barnett and David Bullock the following property
to wit, ten negroes namely, Cisus, a man, Sam, a man, Rachel, a girl, Anny, a
girl, Ledy, a girl, Nance, a girl, they & their increase also twelve fether
beds and furniture and all other of my household furniture of ever kind
whatsoever a four wheel carriage & a two wheal ...a waggon & ox cart
together with... ... and one stud horse Milor, one black horse one sorrel horse
and three bay mares four oxen and thirty one head of cattle, to them the said John
Barnett and Francis L. Campbell to be called on for payment as
security to the said Thomas Barnett to the bond aforesaid, then and in
that the said John Barnett and David Bullock is to take into
their possiton all or any part of the property herein named and sell for redy
money so much thereof as will sattisfy the debt costs and interest on giving
ten days notice on one of the publick court days of the county of Pittsylvania
wherein the estate now lies and sattisfy and pay of all the claims that can
come against the said James Barnett and Francis L. Campbell as
being security to the bond aforesaid in witnessing hereof the said Thomas
Barnett have hereunto asigned his name and afixed his seal the day and date

Barnett & Patsey his wife of the Town of Danville in the county
of Pittsylvania State of Virginia of the
one part & John Noble of the town, county & state
aforesaid of the other part, witnesseth that the said William Barnett
& Patsey his wife for and in consideration of the sum of sixty
dollars, to them in hand paid by the sd John Noble (the receipt whereof
we do hereby acknowledge) have this day bargained granted sold and by these
presents do grant bargain and sell unto the said John Noble a certain
house & lot containing one half acre of ground, situated & being in the
aforesaid town by number thirty together with all and singular the appointments
thereunto belonging or in any way appertaining to have and to hold the said
house and lot of ground together with the appertainances to the said John
Noble, his heirs & assigns forever, to the only proper use and ... of
him the sd John Noble his heirs & assigns forever and the sd William
Barnett & Patsey his wife do for themselves their heirs assigns
forever warrant & defend to the sd John Noble his heirs & assigns the

thousand eight Hundred and nine Between John Barnett Senr and Lucy
Matlock his wife of the Town of Danville Virginia and County of
Pittsylvania of the one part and James D. Patton of the Town and County
aforesaid of the other part. Witnesseth that the sd John Barnett Lucy
Matlock his wife for and in consideration of the sum of $18.75 to them in
hand paid the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged hath granted bargained
sold aliened and confirmed and by these presents do grant Bargain sell alien
confirm unto the said James D. Patton his heirs and assigns forever a
Certain lot or parcel of ground lying and being to the south east side of
Danville Virginia adjoining said Town containing one and three fourths of an
acre more or less bounded as followeth.
Beginning at the east corner of a lot of said Pattons in the Town
of Danville known and designated in the plan of said town by number 30, and
running in a straight line with the town line of said lot perhaps a southeast
course to James Colquhouns line formerly Geo. Lumpkins line 265 feet
thence with said line nearly parallel with the start of said Town 440 feet a
southwest course as we suppose thence back to the south corner of a lot of said
Pattons known and designated in the plan of said Town by number 32, 290
feet thence with said lots no. 32 & no. 30 to the Beginning and the said
lot or parcel of land belonging or appertaining thereto and the rents ___ and
profits of the said premises and of every part and parcel thereof and all the
Estate right and title Interest Claim and demand whatsoever of them the said John

This Indenture made this 7th day of March 1823 between John Barnett of the County of Rockingham & State of North Carolina of the one part and Lucy Barnett daughter of the said John Barnett & William Barnett son-in-law of the same of the other part of the county and state aforesaid.
