He married (1) BETTIE GIDEON 25 Dec 1879 Crawford Co., AR. The marriage license (provided by Cousin Wanda Adams Bennett) said that he was WILLIAM (Wm.) THOMAS DOSS, 25yrs and Bettie was 15 years old, both of Alma, AR. Her parents signed their consent for this marriage. He married (2) BERTHA BURCELLA MURRY Abt. 1900, daughter of JOHN MARTIN MURRY and NANCY ELIZABETH LEE. No marriage record has yet been located. This DOSS/WOFFORD line are the ancestors of the webmaster, Janice Mauldin Castleman.
Notes for THOMAS DOSS:
His birth location comes from an entry in the KY State Archives (Frankfort, KY), on microfilm of birth & deaths in Lincoln Co., KY. This place is about 5 miles south of Stanford, KY. There is some evidence (and family tradition - as stated to me by several descendants) that Thomas might have been named John Thomas Doss. In the Invalid Pension file for Sarah Belle Mackey Doss, Thomas' step-mother, there is a hand written letter by Jas A. McNealy JP, which declares: "I, J. T. Doss solomly swear that Mary E. Doss first wife of Milton Doss died on the 8th day of Feby 1860 - my means of knowing the above are these - Mary E. Doss first wife of Milton Doss was my own mother - the above facts was reduced to writing from oral statement by J. T. Doss to J. McNeely at the post office in Alma, AR., on the 30th day of April 1895 between eleven & twelve o'clock a.m."...signed J. T. Doss. Since there were only four children with Mary WOFFORD, this has to be Thomas DOSS, signing his name J. T. Doss.

Notes for BERTHA BERCELLA "BIRSEE" MURRY: The 1900 Washington Co., AR census, Elm Springs, page 129 lists her as Bertha Doss, b. Sept. 1884 in AR, and parents born in AR. Bertha is living with her husband Thomas DOSS b. Nov. 1855 KY-KY-KY, and her brother lives with them (listed as brother-in-law to Thomas Doss) - Americus Murry, b. Mar. 1881, a single male.
On the 1910 Washington Co., AR (Winslow) census - Bertha DOSS is 26 years old, married 10 years with 2 children, Eula 5 and Helen 2. She is listed as born in AR, parents born TN.
Bertha is located on page 94 (E.D.-231) of the 1920 OK census in Shawnee, Pottawatomie County, at 404 S. Broadway. She is living with her 4th husband, Richard LACKEY, who is listed as 28 years old born in AR. Listed in the family, all named as Richard's children are: Helen Dows (DOSS) 12 years old (b. AR-KY-AR), Edna Dows (DOSS) 10 years old (b. AR-KY-AR), and Gordon MITCHEL, 4 years old (b. OK-MO-AR).

I researched the Lee-Murrys quite a few years ago for my wife, Gail Mitchell Wolcott. Her dad (deceased) was William "Bill" Gordon Mitchell, son of William Thomas Mitchell and Burcella Murray, daughter of John Murray and Nancy Ann Elizabeth Lee. William Thomas was son of William Mitchell and Martha A,. (Ann?) Lee, daughter of John Wesley Lee, and sister of George Sylvester (Lee).

There is a Washington Co., AR marriage record for a Bertha DOSS who married Louis KILPATRICK 13 May 1918, Book R, page 286. Could this be another of Bersee's marriages? Her daughter, Eula, said she had married 4 or more times before her death. However, I could not locate a Louis Kilpatrick on the 1920 OK or AR soundex. Cousin Wanda Adams Bennett of Kansas showed me a death certificate for Bertha which called her "Birsee Bercella Gibson" b. 25 Sept 1880 Garfield, AR., died 26 Nov 1953 in Shawnee, OK of carcinoma of cervix.

His obit (copy seen in the files of Cousin Wanda Adams Bennett) said his children were Mrs. Ben STRICKIER; Mrs. Mack MURRY of Slaton (Lubbock Co.) TX.; Mrs John McCHRISTIAN and M. C. GREENLEE of Savoy, Arkansas. He is buried in White Oak Cemetery.

He married (3) NORA LEE ANDERSON 02 Jan 1924. She died 1968 Crawford Co., AR. These last two marriages were provided by Charles O. MEADOWS.

Family tradition says he was an alcoholic. Supposed to be buried in unmarked grave between Mathew Doss and Arthur Doss (researcher Diana Steele). His birthdate was listed on the widow's application for Military Pension as sworn to by Dr. W. O. Roberts/Robarts M. D. from Danville, KY. Not positive if this is the correct child in this family or not.

He died at 1:30pm Monday afternnon at his home, after an illness of two years. He was a farmer and attended the Baptist Church. Interment at Doctor's Fork Cemetery."
