Lee Family Notes - Generation 1

THE FIRST GENERATION in JOHN WESLEY LEE'S GENEALOGY TREE

The Children and Families of John Wesley and Nancy (SHELTON) LEE

With added notes on his probable 3rd family

John Wesley LEE married at least 2 times. First, he married Nancy Shelton, daughter of Abednigo & Nancy Gough Shelton 12 March 1831 in Butler Co., KY. Secondly, he married Nancy's sister, Martha Shelton in Benton Co., MO on 02 July 1845, but they had no children together. Benton Co., AR court records show that in 1859, John W. Lee's second wife, Martha, charged him with abandonment and claimed he had been living in open adultry since 1857. In 1856, he and Martha sold land to Hannah E. FREEMAN in Benton Co., AR (deed book D, page 58). She apparently had been the wife of Joseph FREEMAN, who either died, or moved away by the 1860 census. On the 1850 Benton Co., AR census, she was listed as Elva H. FREEMAN b. TN c1823, wife of Joseph Freeman. Elva H. (or Hannah E.) & Joseph had the following children listed in 1850: Sarah E. Freeman 10 b. AR, Joana Freeman 8 b. AR, Mary A. Freeman 4 b. AR and Jefferson T. Freeman 2 b. AR. It is my belief that this woman, Hannah E. (Unknown) (also called Elva H.) FREEMAN was the women with whom John W. Lee "lived in open adultry" by 1857 and later census data proves he had children by her. I also believe that John W. Lee moved from Benton Co., AR in the late 1850s, to Bosque Co., TX because he was found there on the 1860 census. See LEENOTES for more information. A good clue for believing that this Hannah E. Freeman was the woman John W. Lee ran off with shows up in this 1860 Texas census. Living with them was Mary Ann Freeman, 14 years old, b. AR (the same girl who was listed as Mary A. Freeman as 4 years old in 1850). Below, you will find a tentative tree naming John W. Lee's family with Hannah Elva FREEMAN, plus their many connections with the FORD family of Benton Co., AR. Please contact me at [email protected] if you are related to this "second family" of John Wesley LEE. I would love to have more information on all of his children and their families.

But as for this evolution stuff, it's not where we come from but where we're goin' that counts.
A quote from Will Rogers

The Porch - by Glynda Turley

Jesse V. Lee, who was born 07 Jun 1832 in KY, like his brother, Syl Lee, was a Confederate soldier. He served with Company E, 35th AR Infantry, and fought along with his brother at the battle of Pea Ridge. His wife filed pension papers from his service in Co. G 2nd Ark Cav. She applied 1901. Jesse was a builder, doing construction work in the Benton Co., AR area. He died of typhoid fever in Benton Co., AR on 21 Nov 1888.

His wife was a most interesting person. Mrs. Peel, a volunteer at the Peel museum and genealogy library in Bentonville, on a recent trip to Benton County (April 1997), gave me the name of a local resident who was a LEE descendant, a Mrs. Franklin Johnson (Louise). Louise told me that Margaret E. (Woods) Lee was a noted artist and had her own gallery and shop in Bentonville. She was reported to be a very good oil painter and many of her painting hung in houses in the area. Her parents were Dysart Woods born 21 Jan1806 Wilson Co., TN died 08 Feb 1882 Benton Co., AR., and Sarah Holmes born 18 Feb1810 Bedford Co., TN., died 12 Jun 1859 Benton Co., AR. (These dates came from Thomas M. Boyd, a WOODS researcher.) Mr. Boyd found information regarding these WOODS families in an article in the Benton County Pioneer, Vol. 10, No. 2, April 1965 and especially Vol. 10, No. 3, July 1965.

In "Obituaries of Benton County" by Easley, page 175: Margaret Elizabeth Woods, daughter of Dysart and Sarah Holmes Woods, was born in Carroll County, TN Jan 24, 1832. When only six years of age she came with her parents to Bentonville, AR where this has been her home except for a short time when she and her husband lived in Leetown on Pea Ridge. In 1856, she was married to J. F. Lee, a member of one of the pioneer families of the county and with whom she happily lived until his death in 1888. To this union were born seven children, three of whom survive her. They are John Lee, who for several years has been the efficient manager of the County Home; Robert L. Lee of the Robert L. Lee Realty Co. of Bentonville and Miss Sallie Lee, also of this city, the two latter, together with their mother, having constituted the Lee home here for several years, their home on North Main St., having been for years a favorite gathering place for the friends of the family and none could enter and leave without feeling the effects of the cheerful and happy spirit of Aunt Betty, as she was commonly called. While she had been compelled to keep to her room for several years on account of injuries received from a fall, her life was always radiant with joy and her smile and happy disposition did much to chase away the gloom from many a life after a visit with her. (Benton County Records 5/14/1920).

Another article in the Benton County Pioneer was "Recollections of Mrs. Betty Woods Lee" telling of how the family came to Benton Co., AR from Carroll Co. TN by wagon and ox team when Benton County was still part of Washington County, AR. Her family settled two miles Northeast of town and for two years, for their meat, had only wild game. Her father-in-law, J. W. Lee, established the forgotten village of Lee Town, southeast of Pea Ridge. Dysart Woods, her father, was a former county judge, the third in the county. CHILDREN: Leonidos LEE b. c1859; John V. LEE, b. 01 Jan 1863; Salley LEE b. c1866; Allie LEE b. c1869; Robert L. LEE b. c1870; and two others-names unknown at this time. Robert L. Lee's obit in Benton Co., AR, 1926, said he too died of typoid fever, while living on Uncle Wade Sikes' farm (Rogers Democrate-18 Nov 1926).

Shelley Lee, an excellent LEE researcher, sent E-mail dated Nov. 1998, stating that she had located the marriage date for William Mitchell and Martha A. R. Lee. The marriage was performed by J. F. Mitchell, MG in Barry Co., MO on 20 Sept 1855. John Wolcott, E-mail wrote that his wife, Gail Mitchell Wolcott's dad (now deceased) was William Gordon Mitchell, son of William Thomas Mitchell and Burcella Murray, daughter of John Murray and Nancy Ann Elizabeth Lee. William Thomas Mitchell was a son of William Mitchell and Martha A,. (Ann?) Lee, daughter of John Wesley Lee, and sister of George Sylvester. The name John WESLEY Lee was part of John & Gail Wolcott's family tradition, and the middle name is now proven by the marriage record to Martha SHELTON.

From FTM CD#234 - Marriage Index: Missouri, 1851-1900, marriages for Jasper Co., MO, indicate a second marriage: Mitchell, Mrs. Martha A. to Bolen, Samuel W. Feb 16, 1873. This couple was found on the 1880 Jasper Co., MO census - no children. Martha was listed as 46 b. KY (parents born KY) and Samuel (whose name was more correctly spelled BOWLING, from the cemetery records of his parents) was 48 years old born TN. Martha lived with her daughter and son-in-law, Calvin & Antha SPARKS according to the 1910 Crawford Co., KS census. She was 76 b. MO, parents b. KY, and a widow. I have not been able to locate her on the 1900 census.

Another descendant from this line, Bob Sparks wrote regarding Martha Lee's first marriage: "William T. Mitchell during the 1880 census was living with my GG Grandfather, Reuben Sparks, on his farm in Crawford County, KS." Here is a little tree with some of this family's information:

From "Obituaries of Benton County AR 1884-1898" compiled by B. P. Easley, page 415: SIKES, Elmira J. Lee - Mrs. J. Wade Sikes died at her home in the city on last Friday at 1:55pm after a 2 month illness, dropsy of the heart caused her death. Funeral was on Saturday at 1pm at the Baptist Church conducted by Dr. W. F. Green of Lowell. She was born in KY and was 61 years old on the 13th of March 1898. She came to Benton County as a child with her parents. (4/14/1898).

"History of 12 Corners" by Alvin Seamster, in Vol. 12 #4, Benton County Pioneer, page 77: On December 25, 1854, J. Wade Sikes married Almira Lee, daughter of John Lee of Lee Town. They had one daughter listed in the 1860 census as Arizona, who married a Duckworth and had one son. In 1928 this grandson of Mr. Sikes came home to Rogers to be with Mr. Sikes, but just one week before the 100th birthday of J. Wade Sikes, his grandson died, leaving him no family except nieces and nephews. The author writes of J. Wade Sikes military career and said that at 100 years of age, Mr. Sikes could recite the names of every member of his military company from the Battle of Pea Ridge.

Mention is made of Almira J. Lee in "A History Of The Sikes Family" by Erwin Funk, Vol. 1 #3 Benton County Pioneer, page 4. The article says she was the daughter of John W. Lee, who came from Kentucky in 1848 and founded Lee Town near Winton Spring, now owned by Lloyd Bush (unknown date article was written). Their daughter Zona married Joe Duckworth. Siddie Duckworth died while a young girl. A grandson, Charley Duckworth who came with his wife to attend his grandfather's 100th anniversary, died here just a week previous and his death was a great shock to the aged man.

From the OBIT in the Benton County Record 1/10/29, Uncle Wade and Almira Sikes took in their grandchildren and raised them after the death of Zona Sikes Duckworth in 1883.

J. Wade SikesJ. Wade Sikes led an interesting life. Vol. 7 #3 of the "Pioneer" page 41, an article about Bentonville, AR, said that before the Civil War, J. Wade Sikes had taught a subscription school for $15.00 per month and boarded with the students. The Pleasant Hills Baptist Church, 3 miles north of Rogers was organized by Rev. James Dunagin and Rev. J. Wade Sikes, and this was the second Baptist Church of the County. "Uncle" Wade Sikes had donated land at Second and Cherry Streets and a samll house was built for the church in 1885.

J. W. Sikes 31 years old born AL, wife Almira 22 years old born MO, and child Arizona 1 years old born AR, living in Benton Co., AR according to the 1860 census. On the 1880 census, Osage, Bentonville, Benton Co., AR census, he is listed as James Sikes 49 born AL, wife Almira 44 years born KY, and daughter Arizona is living with them with her husband, Jospeh Duckworth 29 years old born AR, and their daughter, Charley 1 year old. They live in house 68, page 457, next door to Joseph Duckworth. Wade Sikes is found on the 1900 AR soundex as Wade J. Sikes born Oct. 1828 in AL. He is 71 years old, living alone, in Rogers on West Cherry St., Benton Co., AR. E-mail dated Aug. 2000, from Lindy Sheehan gives us information regarding the 1910 census: "I found Charles and Lena (VanMeter) Duckworth on the 1910 (11th of May) Escalopia Twp., Benton Co., AR census. They are living with his maternal grandfather James Wade Sikes who is listed as widowed and 81 yrs old. The census indicates this is the first marriage for Charles and Lena, they were married 2 years and no children. Charles, shown as 29 years of age, is listed as a barber. Lena, shown as 23 years old, is the daughter of my great grand aunt Lydia (Forest) Vanmeter and would love to find some descendants if they had children." Of note is that "Benton Co. AR Marriages" from the Arkansas Historical Commission shows James R. Lee married L. M. Sikes (Baptist ceremony) 07 Sept 1871.

"History of Benton County Arkansas" by the Heritage Committee, Rogers, AR 1991, pages 771-774, has lengthy family information on the Sikes group. Page 774 has the following on J. Wade Sikes: born in Perry Co., AL, he was about 8 years old when his mother died in Alabama. His father then moved back to Bedford Co., TN with his children. In 1853, his father, brother and other relatives went to Arkansas to visit relatives near Pea Ridge. A short time later, the bought land in Pea Ridge, and later in what was to become the town of Rogers. He met his future wife, Almira Lee here. Uncle Wade, as he was often called, was a school teacher in Tennessee and after he came to Benton County AR. During the Civil War he served 4 years under the Confederacy, first as an orderly sergeant in the battle of Wilson Creek, MO. His Company D, 2nd AR Mounted Riflemen, served in the Battle of Pea Ridge. He was transferred to an Eastern regiment and lost his left arm in the battle of Atlanta, GA. By 1864, he was a Captain, but disabled by the loss of his arm, he left the army in 1865. In 1866 he was elected clerk and recorder in Benton County. He moved to Rogers in 1881 and served as it's first Mayor. He platted the J. Wade Sikes addition in the south part of the town. He quit his minister services due to poor health, but gave a special service on the Sunday preceding his hundredth birthday. He was the oldest fox hunter in the entire Southwest, a sport which he truly loved. He was a fiery old gentleman and a forcible speaker in Church or in front of a group.

Her obit is found in "Obits of Benton Co., 1910-1913", page 154: Mrs. Jack Ford (from Garfield) died Tues, June 27, 1911. She had lived in this neighborhood for many years and was loved and respected by all. She left a large family of children and grandchildren to mourn her loss. At the time of her death she was making her home with her son, Lee Ford. The remains were interred at Walnut Hill Wednesday, June 28. We all join in extending heartfelt sympthy to the bereaved family (Rogers Democrate 29 June 1911). Mr. & Mrs. Tom Ford returned from Texas several days ago, called here by the sickness and subsequent death of his mother (Rogers Democrate 29 June 1911).

From Goodspeed's Histories of NW Arkansas, page 835-6: John H. Ford is one of the oldest native residents and farmers of Benton County, Arkansas, and was born in 1835. His early educational advantages were exceedingly limited, owing to the fact that there were no schools in the county until he was almost grown, and he then picked up what education he could. In 1853 he lost his father, and he was compelled to work very hard in order to support his mother and her younger children. In 1862 he enlisted in the Federal army, in Company F, 72nd AR Regiment, and after serving eleven months went to Springfield, MO., where he remained until the close of the war. He was in a number of battles and skirmishes, but was so fortunate as to escape without being wounded. He has been engages in Farming all his life, and is now the owner of 240 acres of land, a portion of which he inherited from his father and the rest he had homesteaded. This is one of the most desirable farms in the county, and is under fine cultivation. In 1859 he was married to Miss Elizabeth Lee, who is a native of Benton County, and by her became the father of ten children, eight of whom are living: James A.; Mary A., wife of G. W. Reddenck; Polly, wife of T. L. Howell; John W.; Delilah; Lee; Joe; and Tom. Mr. Ford is a member of the Masonic fraternity, and in his political views supports the principles of the Republican party. His father, Richard Ford, was born in NC, and was a farmer by occupation. He came to Arkansas in 1834, the country abounding in wild game of all kinds at that time. It was a common occurrence to shoot a deer near the door or a wild turkey in a tree in the yard. Panthers and bears were also numerous, and as there were very few settlements at that time, but little attention was given to farming, the most of the settler's time being spent in hunting. The father was one of the first grand jurors of Benton County, and died in 1853. His wife's maiden name was Isabella Logan.

1850 census index has a listing for a Carter Barnwell, living in Dallas Twp., p. 368, Greene Co., MO. Unknown if any connection to William Barnwell.

1860 Benton Co., AR census: Barnwell, William, SUGAR CREEK TWP page 347. They don't appear in the 1870 census under the Barnwell surname, nor is there a listing for them in the Benton Co., AR cemetery page on-line.

I believe this is the correct family on the 1880 census:

Also, notice the obvious errors in the census where the children of William & Sarah J. Barnwell have KY listing for the birthplace of their parents.

Children:
1. William Rowlan BARNWELL m. Bessie Anna DEANS. They had Lillian Barnwell b. December 12, 1900 and Stella Barnwell b. 1903.
2. Effie Lee BARNWELL m. John M. WALKER. They had at least 7 children and lived and died in Benton Co., AR.
3. George S. BARNWELL m. Nora L. NICHOLS. They had a son named Robert BARNWELL.

On the 1860 Pea Ridge PO, Benton Co., AR census, with his step-mother, Martha Shelton Lee (58 years old b. KY). He is 18 years old, a clerk, and the birth place looks like IN but difficult to read. His sister Antha is 16 years old and her birth place also looks like IN.

In the Benton Co. Courthouse, record of deeds, Jefferson T. Ford and Polly, his wife, have recorded on May 4, 1866 for $175 3/4 of an acre in the NE quarter of the NW quarter of Section 3 in Twp 20N of range 29W and 41 acres and 20/100. This was part of Polly's dower and attestment was made by Nicholas Mitchell and John W. Lee Jr.

From Obituaries of Benton County, AR by B. P. Easley - Fergusson, Antha - Relatives here received word Tuesday morning of the death at Pawnee Agency, OK Territory of Mrs. Antha Fergusson, wife of W. H. Fergusson. The remains were shipped here for interment and arrived yesterday morning. Funeral services were held at the First Baptist Church, conducted by Rev. J. T. Moore at 10am, immediately after which the burial took place at Odd Fellows cemetery. Mrs. Fergusson had been in Oklahoma with her husband (who was appointed chief blacksmith at Pawnee by Indian Agent Woolsey), her health seemed to improve but she grew worse again and the end did not come altogether unexpectedly. She was well known by almost everybody here, her home, and enjoyed the love and highest esteem of all. She was a noble, Christian woman, full of love and charity, and her death is generally deplored. Her husband - than whom there are no better men - and children, together with relatives, have the deepest sympathy of this community. (Benton CountyDemocrat 5/6/97). She was buried in the Bentonville Cemetery.

This family is found on the 1850 Finley Twp., Greene Co., MO census, and the 1860 Benton Co., AR census, so this shows some of the sources of Antha being John W. Lee's daughter also. Her family is on the 1880 Benton Co., AR census in Osage Twp. Antha (Lee) Ferguson is reported as 36 years of age, born MO, her father born KY, mother born KY. Her husband is shown as a blacksmith. and his parents were born in VA.

Children:
1. John Lee Fergusson b. 04 Mar 1877 Bentonville, Benton, AR; d. 06 Jan 1950 Oklahoma City, OK; m. Minnie Bays May 1903 Pawnee, Pawnee, OK. Their children were: Dorothy Lee Fergusson m. Harvey Cannon Whitaker, Sr.; Julia Marjorie Fergusson; and Antha Roberta Fergusson m. Morris Shepherd Wheeler.
