LEE - Date: 4 Apr 1998, Louis Lee Comments: I have recently obtained information regarding my Grandfather George P. Lee, it appears from the Wright County Missouri Census records of 1900 that he was the son of George W. and Mary A. Lee. George W. was born in New Jersey in 1833, and Mary A. was born in Texas, they were living in Mountain Grove Mo. in 1900. He had two children, George P. and Sarah E. living with them in their household. George and Sarah were born in Indiana in 1878 and 1875 respectively. I have nothing beyond this, but knowing how kinfolk were always moving to stay close to one another, it could be we are shaking the same family tree. I have cousins named John and George, this could be just a coincidence, but family names were passed down around in those days. I enjoyed reading your homepage and history lesson. Thanks so much for all your hard work...Respectfully Yours, Louis R. Lee

Date: 12 Apr 1998, Jimmie L. Robins Comments: Regarding Stand Watie, Gen. Confederate States of America - Correction to your page (Civil War Page): John Ross was principle Chief of the Western Band of Cherokee's at the out break of the Civil War. There were however a very large portion of the tribe that did not agree with his policies nor followed his direction. One of those who had swore to kill him at the first opportunity, following the death's of The Ridge, John Rolling Ridge, and Elias Boudinot. Stan Watie was Elias half brother. The Ridge's were exicuted for selling the tribal lands in the East. With out break of the Civil War, General Pike was authorized by the Commander of the Trans-Mississippi Command of the Confederate Army to raise an Army of Indian Troops: he raised two units of Cherokee's under Col's Drew and Watie, a unit of Choctaw's, Chickasaw's, and Seminole's. These all met at Fort Gibson and marched to Elkhorn Tavern. Chief John Ross had always preached neutrality, until after the Battle of Pea Ridge he was forced into siding with the South. He never provided troops to the South, he provide the troops for the Cherokee Home Guard, which were loyal to the North. And, faught against each other at Honey Springs. I am the Commander of the 1st Cherokee Mounted Rifles, and my cousin James Smith is Commander of Co. A, 1st Choctaw Regiment, we re-enact the various Indian battles.

FORD, RUDDICK - Subject: Jefferson Thomas FORD, (also from Jimmie L. Robins)
My grandmother was Agness Anna Mae FORD, her father was William Franklin FORD, his father was Jefferson Thomas FORD. My g-grandfather William Franklin FORD was born Jan 9, 1849 on Sugar Creek on land held by my g-g-grandfather. According to a xerox copy of a letter I have dated abt 1860's from one of my great aunts; the FORD's are Cherokee and that this was the only lineage ever mentioned in the family===do you know anything of this--according to the Chickamauga Band we belong to it.????? I am willing to share what I have. Richard FORD is my ggg grandfather, his son Jefferson Tilton "Thomas" FORD's wife was Mary "Polly" RUDDICK, my gggrandmother was the daughter of Capt. William RUDDICK the builder and owner of Elkhorn Tavern, the site of the Battle of Elkhorn Tavern during the Civil War. The RUDDICK/REDDICK are the same surname.

RUSHING, DEASON, HEATH, RAY/WRAY - Date: 26 Apr 1996, Frances M. Thomas Comments Regarding the Rushings of Bedford Co., TN: Janice, I saw your post on the Rushing Family Genealogy Forum on the Internet. I don't know how much help I can be, but I can identify some of the names you listed since Deasons and Rushings in Bedford Co. are related to my ancestors. On the 1820 census you mentioned 4 Rushing men. John and Joseph were sons of Robert Rushing of Anson Co., NC. I believe that Peter and Thomas were sons of Abraham Rushing Sr. who left a will in Anson Co. ca1806. I have not yet been able to determine just how Robert and Abraham were related--possibly cousins. On the 1830 census, I believe the John Rushing (70-80) may have been the grandson of Abraham Sr. mentioned above. In any case, he wasn't Joseph Rushing's brother John because Amelia (also on census) was John's widow. Wilson was the son of Thomas shown in the 1820 census. I do not know whether or not the Heaths were related to any of the Rushings; however, these families were members of the Enon Primitive Baptist Church which was established in 1796 when what was to be Bedford Co. was still a part of NC. Records of that church reveal that Lewis Heath was received into full fellowship in May, 1823. Apparently, Joseph and John Rushing were already members there. In 1829 my GGG grandparents, Enoch and Rebecca Deason (whose daughters Martha and Amelia "Millie" were married to Joseph and John Rushing), joined the church. Enoch and Rebecca Deason had a son named William, and he had a daughter Jemima who married a Ray (given name unknown to me). There also were some Wrays in Bedford Co., so you might want to check for that spelling. William Deason's brother, John had some grown children who left Bedford Co. and migrated to Benton Co., AR. Just what the connection is with the Martha Rushing Heath you mentioned, I don't know, but there MUST be one! Joseph and Martha Rushing had 12 children--8 of them daughters, and I do not have their names. My guess is that one of those daughters married a Heath. Please let me know what you find out. I am interested. Sincerely, Frances Thomas, Nederland, TX

HEATH, HOLMAN - Date: 27 Apr 1998 Charlie Ott Comments: Dear Janice, I am distantly related to Lewis (Heath) through the Holman family. One of James' daughters was Abigail, my maternal great grandmother. She married John Riley Holman in Parker Co., TX. James was the first child of John and Anna Hogard Heath. I found the information about James and Rev. Lewis Heath in a history of Benton County, AR in the Dallas public library. The listing F389 located on page 531. One of James' brothers, Robert Monroe is buried in Ebenezer Cemetery near Gibtown, TX. There is a write up about Robt in the Jack County histories F467, p465. He died 10 Apr 1896. His wife died 6 Mar1923. Also buried at Ebenezer are C.R. Heath. b 6 Jan 1808, d. 6 Feb 1902, S.H. Heath b. 8 Nov 1808 d. 6 Jan 1903, S.P. Heath b. 18 Mar 1818, d. 11 Mar 1900 (wife of C.R. Heath)..Do you know any of these folks? I have tried to figure out their relationship, but I guess that I'm never going to. From what I read in the Benton County book, they can't be Robt or James' parents. Another brother Thomas J(efferson) lived north of Gibbtown in either Montague or Cook Co. James and T.J. applied for CSA pensions. From what I've been able to piece together, the Heaths met the Holmans in Benton County. Both families moved to the Sherman, TX (Grayson Co.) for a few years c1860. From there, the Holmans moved to Denton Co., TX. The Holmans lived in Denton from c1869-1887 then moved west to Gibtown. James had a place in Parker Co. It was probably very close to the county line of Jack and Parker Co. James had a bunch of kids, including two sets of twins. I don't know when the others moved to Texas specifically, but I have been able to follow Robt a little. I'm still at a loss for the Heaths also buried in Ebenezer. If you can help, I could use it. I don't have much concrete info on the Heaths, but I do have some on the Holmans. I met a relative on the internet that is looking for an Etta Heath Todd. Are you familiar with that name? Keep in touch. I check my email every evening. Hope I can be of help to your rounding out your tree. By the way, John Riley Holman's father was allegedly a pastor also. His name was Enoch Pearson Holman, went by E.P. Sincerely, Charlie Ott.

SHELTON, BETHUNE - Date: 29 Apr 1998 Pam Parsons Comments: Hello! I enjoyed your homepage! My husband's great grandmother was Myrtle Shelton. She was born around 1888. We believe she was born in TN (or at least lived there ) because my husband's grandmother remembers calling her "Tennessee." She married Joseph Bethune around 1905. They lived in Paris AR. their entire married lives. I have no clue as to who her parents or siblings were. I would appreciate any information you might be able to provide me with. Thanks for your time! Pam Parsons

Comments: Wow...I'm really impressed with your research and organization. I've just started trying to learn more about my TAYLOR/SIKES ancestry. My connection is through Samantha Sikes, a sister to James Wade Sikes. She married first to Deason, 2nd to Bray and 3rd to Atkisson, the father to Stephen Decateur Atkisson who married two of Samantha's daughters.....at least according to my undocumented notes. Hopefully, in time, I will have something as exciting as your information to share.

LEE, MURRY, MITCHELL - Date: 28 May 1998, John Wolcott's Comments: Cousin Janice. I discovered your neat Lee/Murry file on the Genforum. Very well done. I researched the Lee-Murry's quite a few years ago for my wife, Gail Mitchell Wolcott. Her dad (deceased) was William Gordon Mitchell, son of William Thomas Mitchell and Burcella Murray, daughter of John Murray and Nancy Ann Elizabeth Lee. William Thomas was son of William Mitchell and Martha A,. (Ann?) Lee, daughter of John Wesley Lee, and sister of George Sylvester. If you would like to surprise her with a message, send it to [email protected]

TEMPLE, DICKSON, POWELL, STREETER, FORT, BAUGH, SIMS, FORD, WOODS, HOLMES, JEFFERSON - Date: 3 Jun 1998 Bennett Dickson Comments: Janice, I found some of your posts on GenForum and visited your John Lee webpage. I see that we share a couple of connections. I descend from: Charlotte Benton TEMPLE, b. 6 Mar 1800 m. 14 Jun 1817 John Bennett DICKSON, b. 23 Apr 1793. They moved from Bedford Co, TN to Benton County, AR about 1835 where John was first Clerk of Court. Charlotte died in Benton Co 7 Mar 1843. She was the daughter of Robert TEMPLE and Elizabeth POWELL. Timothy R. Marsh, writing in the Bedford Co. Historical Quarterly, vol 5, #3, Fall 1979 gives: Dempsey Powell b. 1730, d. 1773 Wake Co, NC, Married twice, 10 children:

  • Elizabeth m. Robert TEMPLE both came to Bedford Co
  • Mildred b. 1785 m. John STREETER Mildred came to Bedford Co as a widow
  • Cloey m. James FORT
  • Dempsey Jr., m. Polly BAUGH
  • Benton
  • Charlotte b. 1774 m. John SIMS came to Bedford Co.
  • Caswell
  • Pattie m. John FORT
  • Jessie
I found a World Family Tree submission (vol 13, #1853 this has your name too, is it your submission?) that gives the 1752 birth date. I have had trouble figuring out how to sort out the children. Elizabeth was born abt 1769 and so seems to have been the daughter of Nancy DEMPSEY, but she named her daughter Charlotte Benton TEMPLE, that name might suggest that Elizabeth was the daughter of Pleasant BENTON, although in other families, I have run across children of the second wife named for the first wife or members of her family. Elizabeth died intestate in Bedford Co and left an estate of some value, the court records are full of the fight for the proceeds. I also descend from Dysart WOODS and his wife Sarah HOLMES through their daughter, Cyntha Adeline WOODS (1840-1914). She married John J. JEFFERSON and their daughter, Madeline married my great grandfather, Dwight DICKSON, all Benton County families. If youd like more on the WOODS, HOLMES, or any of these other families, let me know. LEE, BROOKSHIRE - Date: 06/11/98, Barbara Brinkley Comments: How the site was found-followed link from another page; Opinion of site-perfect - Janice,We have talked before about our Lee's in Butler Co. My ancestor was William M. Lee of Butler Co, born 1807. Your webpage is fantastic! As is often the case in genealogy, another of my families, Farley Brookshire, lived "over the Hill" from the Battle of Pea Ridge. My cousin has a letter one of his daughters wrote, describing how they could hear "the big guns" during the battle. I'm still trying to find more Lee's, plus the Brookshires. Keep up your good work! LEE, CASTLEMAN - Date: 11 Jun 1998, Ann Parker Comments: Hello, I have just found your page. I love cats, Goldens, birds too and am also descended from the Lee's on my father's side and the Castlemans on my mother's side. Right now I am researching Rhoda Patience Robertson and her husband Jacob Castleman. They were in Tennessee before 1790. Their children were, Phoebe (who married a Shane) Jacob, Andrew, Benjamin, Joseph and John. If you can help me I would be ever so grateful, Ann Parker.

SHELTON, FRALEY - Date: 16 Jun 1998, Dawn Shelton Comments: First may I compliment you on the wonderful web page that you have. Very easy to get around and enjoyable pictures. I am trying to find parents of James Shelton born April 1883 in Kentucky, possibly Elliott County, but not sure. He married Lillie B. Fraley in December of 1905. James had an older brother named John born Sep 18, 1876, and there was another brother, Jack, although, I have no clue as to his birth placement. Family says he lived out in Washington. James and John are together in Rowan County in 1900 & 1910 census reports; John's marriage certificate gives his place of birth as Elliott County. Elliott County was formed in 1869 from Carter, Lawrence, and Morgan counties, (in case you didn't know). If you would please see if any of the above fits into your information I would greatly appreciate it. Even more so to hear back from you. Thanks in advance, Dawn Shelton.

GOUGH - Date: 06/19/98, Jim Ball Comments: Opinion of site: Very Good - Homepage URL - http://web.raex.com/~jdball/ - Janice, if you want a different perspective of the Virginia GOUGH family, check the URL above. My line involves Francis, b/o William. Seems that most GOUGH researchers don't mention him. The documentation for this comes from some very early Gough or Hinson newsletters, forget which offhand. My Francis Gough (wife was Verlinda) was the brother of your William (wife was Lucy). Their parents were Thomas and Sarah. Verlinda's name may actually be Malinda as shown in Fauquier Tax Books. I'm not sure which is correct.

SHELTON, ASHLEY - Date: 20 Jul 1998, "Jackie Conces Comments: Hi, Janice. I got your name and e-mail address from Carolyn Shannon Genzel. I, too, am a descendant of Jeremiah Shelton of VA and KY. His daughter, Nancy, who married James Ashley in Butler County, KY. Nancy and James were my GG grandparents. The Ashleys came to Texas around 1840, settling in Hopkins County. My mother, Alice Highsaw Houston, passed away last October at age 99. She told us many stories about her family. Her mother, Theodocia Ashley, was the daughter of Jeremiah Shelton Ashley and Margaret Campbell Marrs. I have many of the letters Theodocia's sister, Nancy Adaline, sent my mother through the years. They contain a lot of family history. Nancy Adaline also lived to be 99. Janice, I certainly look forward to hearing from you and exchanging information. Sincerely, Jackie Houston Conces

DANIEL, SKELTON - Date: 21 Jul 1998, Thelmas F. Prince Comments: I just looked at your Daniel line, Ralph Shelton-Mary Daniel. I got the address from the Daniel Gen Forum. Your webpage is just perfect and one of the best I have seen. I descend from Thomas Skelton, a Revolutionary soldier from Union District, SC. I have his family at this URL. The other day I was looking at this webpage about Skeltons: http://www.richpoor.com/~nwdirect/skeltons3.htm. This page gives the parents of Thomas Skelton as Ralph Skelton and Mary Daniel who married in Middlesex Co. Va. in 1731. From your page, I gather this must be wrong. Have you seen documents from Ralph, and what are the spellings given? I have not researched this yet myself, no time yet, but you can save me a lot of research, I think. Thanks so much. Thelma F. Prince. Researching: Bohannon, Bailey, Cain, Cash, Sorrells, Williams, Still, Skelton, Hughes, Moore, Wright, O'Reilly/Reilly, Knight, Snead, Whitehead, Sanders, etc.

I am related to both Jerimiah and Chrispin, since Jerimiah's granddaughter (Asher's daughter) married Chrispen's great-grandson Abram Montecue Shelton (Chrispen, Gabrial, Wyatt, Abram). LEE, LEA, SMITH, TURNER - Date: 16 Sep 1998, Lynne's Comments: "Just scanned over all of your wonderful work. First want to thank you. I clicked on the Robt. E. Lee lineage, and was like Xmas ... have wanted to review Lee's of VA for years, as like so many, family fable I guess, was that we were related. About 1975 I met one cousin in Scrant, Ark , he was ggrandson of my gggrandmother's sister. He told me then many of the Lee's in battle of Pea Ridge were of our Lee's. We have family in PeaRidge, and was always going to follow up on this and never did. (Too busy raising a family then). Anyway, following is a summary of what I do know, if anything sounds like something please let me know. David Lea, suppose to be a Quaker from PA, married Ann Lee, who is suppose to be granddau of Light Horse Harry Lee. Needless to say haven't been able to prove or disprove anything yet. David Lea or Lee and Ann Lee had following children: Easter md M.W. Smith; Mary Elizabeth b.19 May 1840 in Hardin Co., TN d.29Jan 1929 in Scranton, AR buried in Pleasant Grove Cememtery in Scranton; John d.23 Oct 1882(?); William Henry killed at a horse race?; Waddie md. twice, 1st husb. drowned 2 nd husb. (?) she left with returning to Tn and was never heard from again, one husb. name was Tally; Mary E. Lee md Isaac Rufus Turner, they are my ggrandparents. I have all that line if you would like it. That's about it, except for Mary E. I don't know much, any help appreciated. Lynne"

Sounds like you're really zeroing in on John Lee. I have had to put my Lee research on hold for a time so I thought maybe I'd give you my Lee names in case they popped up for you somewhere. It seems too close to be random chance. My Lee's are also supposed to be a first cousin of R.E. Lee. He wrote to Jesse during the war. I also found out my G.G.Grand father, E. Jesse Lee's father was a John Lee. Any way, here are the stats. in case it turns something up. E.Jesse Lee,b. 1835 in Indiana(served w/7th Iowa Co. G), d.9/5/1906 (Jesse is buried in the old Rodgers Cemetary, beside a rather new, large granite monument with the Lee name ingraved prominantely, with his son Selby, and other Lees that are unkown to us). Married Sabina Elizabeth Pratt, b. 1842, Kentucky, d. ? and buried somewhere in Missouri. We think she went to live with a child and died there. Children: Arthur b. 1866, Ernest b. 1867, O.Selby b. 1870, Hattie(my G.Grandma)b. 1873, John b. 1876, Willie b. 1878, Charles b. 1879. Good Luck!! Karen Souza"

Stella Shelton was my ggrandmother born in 1892. I have a picture of her mother from St. Louis in 1947, although she and my ggrandfather divorced shortle after his birth. You mentioned Jeremiah Shelton as a Missouri Shelton. Can you point me in some direction? Also, Stella had an identical twin, Della. Her daughter was Glenda Blake. She had a son, Buddy Rodgers...thanks and sorry to bother you if this is another dead end."

SIEGEL: Date: 20 Nov 1998 Cora Siegel Comments: "I have been looking for information on this person. I bought a large picture in a gold frame of him at a public auction some years back, mainly because our name is Siegel. My husbands aunt sho has since passed away said she thought we were decendents. It is Gen Sigel in full uniform with a sword at his side. I was thrilled when I saw his picture on your page and also another one on one of the other pages. It is the man in my picture. I would love to find his family line back and forword. If you have any information I would be glad for it. Your page is great. Thank You Cora Siegel."

I'll E-mail you some of the info I have when I can piece it together. Thank you once again."

SHELTON, GOODMAN: Date: 12/14/98, Mary Lou Screeton Comments: Opinion of site: Perfect. "My first Shelton ancestor that I have any information on was Ira Ellis Shelton, my great grandfather. I think he was born 31 Mar 1912, probably in Virginia. Lived in Kentucky, Missouri, and died in Arkansas. First married to Elizabeth Ann Goodman, who was daughter of Martha Smith Shelton and Meredith Goodman. I have never been able to determine the parents of Ira Ellis Shelton. Any help you could give me would be greatly appreciated."
