A hand written copy of marriages from Jefferson Co., TN indicated that John Hays had married Lyde Givens in 1813. However, from the above document - you can see that the person who transcribed the index for Jefferson Co., TN marriages, misread the entry when Lydia was named as GIVENS. By studying the writing, you can clearly see that the scribe makes all his letters "m" the same (look at the word "marriage" right above the word "Sims" in the bond). John Hays/Haze's entended bride was called Lyde SIMS! On the second line of the bond, the name William SHADDEN also shows that the letter "S" in his name is the same as in "Sims". The document reads "Honor all men by these presents that we John Haze and William Shadden both of Jefferson County and State of Tennessee are firmly bound unto Walace(?) Blount Governor and his successors in office in the sum of Twelve hundred and fifty dollars to be void on condition there be no legal cause to obstruct the said marriage between John Haze and Lyde Sims. Witness our hands and seals this 7th day of June 1813. John Hamilton Clk." and John (his X mark) Haze with seal and William Shadden signed with a legal signature and seal.
William Shadden was married to Elizabeth HAYS, daughter of John & Jenney Thompson HAYS. John was John W. Hays' uncle, brother to James Hays.
I would like to thank the very nice employees of the Jefferson Co., TN courthouse for their help in finding the above document. We were so thrilled to find this information which ties the HAYS to the SIMS family, plus offers some proof of the connection to that early HAYS family in Jefferson Co., TN. The courthouse employees didn't even charge me for the copy I made!
