Mary DANIEL b. 1713--d. c1764 |
Ralph Shelton, Jr., was born 23 Oct 1709 in Middlesex Co., VA. He died 1789 in Henry Co., VA. His wife Mary Daniel was baptized 07 March 1712/13 to William Daniel and Mary Moseley. Click here to visit the DANIEL page. Ralph and Mary married 10 Jun 1731 in Middlesex Co., VA. In 1745, Ralph Shelton, Jr. owned 400 acres in Amelia Co., VA. Some researchers believed his name was spelled SKELTON on some deeds, but other researchers say all the written records show SHELTON. Ken Shelton, who wrote The Shelton Trek Across Kentucky, The History of the Jeremiah Shelton Family of Kentucky and Missouri said that Ralph was mentioned in his mother's will written in Amelia Co., VA., and he probably lived near her at this time. His parents were Ralph Shelton, Sr. and Mary Jane ?Crispin/Crisp? of Middlesex Co., VA. By 1763, Ralph Shelton, Jr. had moved to Halifax Co., VA and he was in Henry Co., VA when it was formed in 1776/77. Ralph and his son Eliphaz are buried in the same cemetery. Ken wrote that Ralph listed 17 children in his will. There is also a belief that there was an Ebenezer Shelton who was Ralph's son. There is an Ebenezer on the 1800 Tax rolls of Kentucky, and he is in Butler Co., KY along with Jeremiah Shelton, Ralph & Mary Daniel Shelton's son and my ancestor, but no other records were found for this Ebenezer.
Time Line:
Dec.3, 1778: researcher Margaret Alford cites Lunenburg Deed Book 13, page 384: Ralph and wife ELIZABETH sold to John Ingram 400 acres in Lunenburg County on adj. sd. Ingram on Ledbetter Creek. From the Library of Virginia Land Grant Database and the description for the 1749 grant to Ralph Shelton describes it as "on the lower side of Ledbetter Creek adjoining John Ingram."
1781, Feb: Henry County, VA: Grants to Ralph, Shelton, Sr., of Henry in Pittsylvania County. for 145 acres. and a second grant for 251 acres, both on Matthew Creek.
1782 - Henry Co., VA Personal Property Tax List - Shelton, Ralph, Senr.: Tithes-1, Negroes-0, Horses-2, and Cattle-7.
1781, Mar: Henry Co, VA: Grant to Ralph Shelton, Jr., for 78 acres on both sides of the Dann River in Henry County.
1784, May: Ralph, Sr. Sold to son James 400 acres in Henry, matching 1760 purchase. Deed is signed and there is no dower release.
1785: Court Order exempting Ralph, Sr., from future taxes and church levy.
1787, April: Ralph, Sr., wrote his will., which he signs. It is not signed by mark.
1788, April: Ralph and wife Elizabeth to Jacob Adams a deed recorded in Henry County Deed Book 3, p. 468. Ralph signs.
1788, April: Ralph and wife Elizabeth to Jacob Adams, Jr., a deed recorded in Henry County Deed Book 3, p. 470. Ralph signs.
1789, March 30: Ralph, Sr., will is proved in Henry Co., VA.
1789, in the Court Order Books of Henry County Elizabeth is referred to as the "widow and relict" of Ralph Shelton, deceased.
From The Sheltons of England & America by Mildred C. Whitaker, 1941, page 206, we find that she has listed the birth, death, will, marriage and children of Ralph Shelton, Jr. and his first wife Mary Daniel. While some of Ms. Whitaker's data has been proven incorrect, she seems accurate on these particular accounts. Ralph's will was proved 30 Mar 1789. He lived in Amelia Co., VA for many years, then sold his land and moved to what was to become Henry Co., VA. (formed from Pittsylvania and Patrick counties), by 1763. His second wife apparently was named Elizabeth (but little is known about her.) Children named in his will are sons Ralph, Palitiah, Eliphas, James, Hezekiah, Jeremiah (my ancestor), Azariah (who married Sarah Holt and moved to TN), Roger (who was listed on the 1790 Henry Co., VA tax list), and John, his son whom he cut off with a bequest of 25 pounds. The daughters named are Katherine Rutherford, Sarah Robertson, Elizaeth Arnold, Rina McGhee and Susannah Jones. The Library of VA's on-line digital database search has a record of Ralph Shelton's will: Will Book No. 1, 1777-1799 (Reel 15), p. 174. Inv. & Appr. rec. 29 June 1789. Page 217-219 - Account current, no recording date given. See Order Book No. 6, 1792-1797 (Reel 20) p. 4, for date (28 February 1792). Page 170-171. Will, pro. 30 March 1789. This was part of index to Henry County Wills and Administrations (1777 - 1800) in the collection of Virginia wills and administrations. At his death, Ralph Shelton's estate was appraised at 51 pounds 10 shillings 6 pence on 30 May 1789 by the executors. The estate sale results and account from 23 July 1789 show debts against the estate totaling 116.5.6., and it is possible that Ralph died around the first of the year. Also from the Library of VA's on-line site for VA land grants: Ralph Shelton, Jr., 01 Mar 1781, 78ac in Henry County, on both sides of the Dann River.
The following is the Will of Ralph Shelton, Jr.: No wife is mentioned in the above will, but records from HENRY COUNTY, VA, GENERAL INDEX TO ENDED LAW AND CHANCERY, COUNTY COURT FROM 1777 TO 1904, from microfilm copied and sent Feb. 2001 by Margaret Alford, seem to indicate that Ralph Shelton Jr.'s last wife was named Elizabeth. One entry on page 51, Book 5, 1789 - Elizabeth Shelton. Relinquished her claim on the estate of her husband.

For another look this family check out First Families of Old BUNCOMBE . This site names Rodrick Shelton as a child to this James Shelton and claims his wife as a WILLARD. Other researchers think Rodrick Shelton was married to a BRIGGS. Keep in mind when you visit other's websites that most researchers believe that Ralph Shelton Sr. was NOT a son of Peter Shelton and his wife Susannah Jackson. Our Ralph, b. 1685, father of Ralph Jr., was imported to North America by Thomas Merriwether (Essex Court Order Book-1702). One James SHELTON died in Henry Co., VA (where many of Ralph Shelton's family lived during this time period), according to will records in the Library of Virginia: Will Book No. 1, 1777-1799 (Reel 15), p. 102-103. Inv. & Appr. rec. 28 July 1785, p. 279-280, Account current, rec. 20 Sept. 1797, p. 100-101. Will, pro. 26 March 1785. This is from part of an index to Henry County Wills and Administrations (1777 - 1800). However, there is good evidence supporting the Lincoln Co., TN death location of Ralph Shelton's son James. Ken Shelton wrote of a Deed dated 12 Oct 1810, Casey Co, KY, where Vardeman Shelton OF THE STATE OF TENNESSEE AND THE COUNTY OF LINCOLN sold to John Holliday of the State of Kentucky and County of Casey, 63 acres of land bound beginning at Lott Luttrell's,... Rhoda Luttrell's,...etc. This one deed ties the Casey Co, KY Sheltons with Lincoln Co, TN Sheltons, Casey Co, KY Sheltons to Casey Co, KY Luttrells, and tax lists tie Casey Co, KY James, et. al. with Liberty and Easop Shelton, brothers to James Shelton. Another researcher, Garvin J. Fryar wrote in Feb. 2000 that he believed Rodrick was NOT a son to James, but to Crispen Shelton. Among the compelling evidence he mentioned: "in deed book 14, Pittsylvania County Virginia, p. 92, is a Power of Attorney signed by Rodrick Shelton and James Taylor, 'residents of North Carolina and legatees of Gabriel Shelton'". I have not personally researched this line, and have not seen the evidence presented by the persons in disagreement about this matter. You must simply use your own judgement and do your own research regarding Rodrick Shelton's parents. The children presented below have not personally been researched by me.

We call him Ralph Shelton III. 1782 Henry Co., VA Personal Property Tax List - Shelton, Ralph Jr.: Tithes-1, Negroes-0, Horses-3, and Cattle-5. It has not yet been determined which Ralph Shelton the below extracted NC deed pertains to, but it could be this Ralph, for several of his siblings also owned land in Surry/Stokes Counties., NC: Surry County, North Carolina Abstracts Deed Books A, B, and C 1770-1788
Book C page 117 03 Nov 1784 NC Grant Ralph SHELTON 500 ac HIXES FORK (of Peters Creek) adj LANSFORD FIELD. This Ralph seems to have been called Ralph Shelton, Jr., in VA records, where his father was called Ralph Shelton, Sr. Old records indicate that Ralph Shelton, Jr. signed deeds using a mark or "X", while his father always signed his name. More referrences are made for the possibility that this Ralph was married to a Susannah Unknown while living in Henry Co., VA:
1785 Surry County, NC, Book D: page 121, 29 July 1785 Ralph SHELTON, Henry Co, VA to Alexander BURGE 100 pds 500 ac both sides HIXES FORK adj Sanford FIELDS. Thomas ISBELL, Phil DEATHERAGE, signed Ralph X SHELTON, Susanna X SHELTON. "Susannah" identifies him as Ralph III, of Henry County called "Ralph, Jr." in Henry County and Pittsylvania County records as opposed to Ralph born 1709 in Middlesex, his father, who was called Ralph, Sr. (a special "thanks" goes to Hildred Shelton of Viriginia, who researched this issue, clearing up much confusion about these two men).
His name was found on the 1767 Tithables for Pittsylvania Co., VA. Palatiah Shelton owned 72 acres on the Blue Ridge, including some of the branches of Johnson's and Loving Creek 28 Feb 1784, and 90 acres on the south side of the Rockey Mountain, including some of the branches of South Mayo Creek 28 Feb 1784, also 309 acres purchased 31 Mar 1786 on the head branches of the Middle Fork of Little Dan River (source: "History of Patrick & Henry Co., VA" by Virginia G. & Lewis G. Pedigo, copyright 1933-LDS Family History Center, Salt Lake City, UT). Although his name was not spelled correctly, he apparently owned land in Surry Co., NC (as did his father & several siblings) according to deed abstracts from Surry Co, NC Deed Abstracts, Book D, E and F 1779-1790: page 1063, Jonathan MUSICK enters 300 acres of land in Surry Co on both sides of the MOUNTAIN BRANCH the waters of SNOW CREEK beginning at Jesse MAPPINES upper corner then running to include the imporvement whereon PATTETYER (should be Palatiah) SHELTON now lives for quantity. Dec 15, 1778. Warrant granted. Also page 58. Charles WHITLOCK enters 640 acres of land in Surry Co lying at the FLAG POND on SNOW CREEK including the improvement that was Salathiel SHELTON'S (again should be Palatiah) For complement. April 17, 1778. Warrant granted. Another source for this line was found in GenServ, data entered by Buddy Holmes, E-mail [email protected]. He was the source for the spouse data.
New information comes to us in E-mail dated Jan. 2000 from descendant, Laura Altevers. Laura wrote that there is speculation almong researchers in the ROBINSON line that the son listed as David ROBINSON, might actually be a son to William and Catherine (Rogers) Robinson, and a grandson of Julius and Sarah Shelton Robinson. She has inconclusive data regarding this particular line. Laura has two wonderful websites for her ROBINSON family: The Robinson Cousin Homestead and her FTM webpage, The Old Folks Home. Thanks so much for sharing this information with us, Larua!
The given name Dudley comes from a descendant, Barbee Hodgkins, E-mail - [email protected]. She spells the 7th child's name as Catherine SHELTON. Other researchers have added more to this line at WorldConnect. One researcher for The Jerry H Collins Tree listed one child called Lydia. He wrote that she married c1806 to James Shelton, and lists this James as a son to James & Philipina Shelton. Other researchers list him as a son to James & Susanna Vardeman Shelton. James died in Ray Co., MO on June 6, 1831 (source: descendant Orville Shelton. He wrote in 2003 that Lydia remarried to Nicholas Gentry.)Another child was Susannah, listed on this webpage http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~dobson/va/vapatric.htm, a site built by Mary Ann (Duncan) Dobson. Susannah reportedly married Rice DUNCAN 1812 in Adair Co., KY. Also from this website:

Henry Co., VA 1782 Personal Property Tax List - Shelton, Eliphaz: Tithes-1, Negroes-0, Horses-14, and Cattle-40. He purchased land (according to "History of Patrick & Henry Co., VA") 06 Jul 1780, 846 acres on Bull Mountain Fork of Mayo River, 365 acres on the waters of Mayo River 10 Apr 1781, 531 acres on the waters of Mayo River, beginning at Carter's corners 18 Feb 1784, and 590 acres on both sides of the North Mayo River, 28 Feb 1784, adjoining John Shelton. Land deeds have been entered by Mary C. Smith at the USGenWeb Archived pages for Henry Co., VA. Eliphaz Shelton was born 1737 in Amelia County, Virginia, wife Ann Unknown according to Deborah Lee, he died 10/30/1834 in Patrick County, VA. She also said he was a captain in the Revolutionary War. Deborah Lee is a descendant of Clabourne Shelton, and she is still searching for his wife's maiden name. Eliphaz's will was written 04 Jul 1818 and probated in Patrick Co., VA during the August 1826 court term. A copy of his will can be found by clicking on this underlined link. Using ROOTSWEB search engines will provide researchers of this line quite a lot of material. Another descendant from this line is David Lewis, [email protected] who wrote the following: "Olive was married to Samuel Nowlin on January 19, 1809 at Patrick Co VA. Samuel was son of James & Ursula Nowlin. I am descent from Olive's son Frederick Shelton Nowling born abt 1826 in VA died Memphis TN 9/26/1863 in civil war." A recent E-mail from Paul Shelton (Dec. 22, 1999) indicates that he too is a descendant from Eliphaz Shelton. He promised to send more later , but mentioned that his line was from Eliphaz Shelton, Hudson, Anderson, Abraham Jackson, John Abe, Paul W. Shelton, Sr....it is so wonderful to hear from "new" cousins!
He purchased land 02 Dec 1785, 933 acres adjoining Jacob Adams land. Azariah SHELTON, whose wife was a SARAH HOLT, were from Henry Co, Virginia, and of course, as Henry came out of Pittsylvania, originally from that county. This couple came first to Grainger Co., TN or perhaps Hawkins before the days of Grainger. Three of the sons of Azariah SHELTON were physicians and they were Drs. HEZEKIAH, DAVID and AZARIAH SHELTON (this was from "The Shelton Family From Henry County, Virginia"). Worth S. Ray wrote on page 465 in his Tennessee Cousins, that the Henry HOLT, who was one of the witnessess to Ralph Shelton's 1787 will, was probably the parent of Sarah Holt (careful study should be made of any statement by Worth S. Ray, as many errors have been found in his works). Click here to visit the homepage of Bobbie Haydon, a descendant from this line. And here is the E-mail address for another researcher interested in this line...click here.

She died in Jackson Co., AL Aft. 1842, according to [email protected]. Another researcher for this line submitted data to GenServ. She is Anita McGehee, E-mail [email protected]. Anita wrote that William McGehee was born 31 Mar 1756, died May 1836 in Jackson Co., AL. He was the son of James McGEHEE Jr. and Ann CHILES. Please write to Anita if you can share information on the SHELTON/McGEHEE connection. Derina SHELTON McGEHEE continued to receive payments from her husband's Revolutionary War service, while she was living in Alabama. They may have had children named Daniel, William Jr, Henry, Anna, Matthew, Samuel Hezekiah (b. Oct 10, 1790), and Nancy (b. 1797) according to Woody L (Jack) McGehee. Visit his webpage by clicking here.
Some researchers have posted on-line that the date of birth for Elizabeth was 1760, and claim that her husband, William Arnold, died after 7 March 1825 at Washington Co., Georgia. Recent E-mail from Valerie Simonton, April 2007, seems to indicate that the William ARNOLD in question was born 31 August 1749 Cumberland Co., VA. The extended family can be found on various TN census in Cannon and Coffee counties and even Butler Co., KY, among other localities. CHILDREN:

NOTES: It appears, from probate papers, that Ralph Shelton, Jr. had a much younger wife (2nd or 3rd??) when he died. Her name was Elizabeth. Her maiden name is unknown to us. Was she the mother of his last four children? We just do not know for certain at this time.
He was named in his father's will, and found on the 1807-1808 Casey Co., KY Tax Lists. He remained on these list until 1828. Ken Shelton sent this infomration: deed, dated 14 Apr 1823, Manson Ragan to Liberty Shelton, both of Casey County, and 2nd deed, dated 11 Nov 1824, George Vandevent to Liberty Shelton, both of Casey County. From The Kentucky Land Grants, p.718 Libery SHELTON was a Grantee of 50 acres from a survey 01 Jan 1828 in Casey Co., KY on the South Fork of the Green River.
Like his brother Liberty, his name is found in Casey Co., KY records in the early 19th century. Aesop Shelton appears on tax lists in Adair County, Kentucky, in 1804 and 1805. On 18 Dec 1805 he married Elizabeth Luttrell. He appears to have married a second time to Amy or Anna ___ (born about 1785), probably after the family had moved to Tennessee. Linda Wood Parrish is seeking more about the Casey County, KY records. Are there marriage records for Aesop or any of the children? If you can assist her, please be sure to E-mail her (see address link below). Linda Wood Parrish also wrote that Aesop was in Lincoln County, TN, as early as 1816 when he registered his stock mark with the County Court. In 1821 he helped prove a deed for Benjamin Walker. He was appointed Constable by the County Court in 1827. Starting about 1824 he bought and entered land on both sides of Elk River. On 28 Aug 1824--50 acres of land on north side of Elk River surveyed for Aesop Shelton, entry dated 19 Jul 1824. Land joined a 51 1/2 acre tract owned by Aesop Shelton and Benjamin Walker's 40 acre tract. Chain Carriers were John Shelton and Andrew Shelton (Lincoln Co TN Survey Book for 1824-1827, page 375). At his death, he owned five slaves and some 600 acres of land in District 3 of Lincoln County, Tennessee, and on waters of Tucker Creek. 21 May 1861--Inventory of Estate of Aesop Shelton showed the five slave's names as follows: Griff..........aged 41 years; Hoskin.........aged 24 years; Dick...........aged 20 years; Goliath........aged 16 years; Aleck..........aged 14 years. He and Amy are listed on the 1850 Lincoln Co., TN census: Aesop 69, Amy 65, VA TN, Li-1131-130. Thanks go to Linda Wood Parrish for updating with the above data.
