Although the first Euro-American settlers arrived in the Grand Traverse area in the late 1830s, record keeping was sporadic and there are relatively few documents from the early days. The 1850s saw the formal establishment of the Grand Traverse County government. Leelanau County and Benzie County were soon split off and established their own record keeping. For Grand Traverse County, Probate Court records begin in 1853, marriage records in 1856, the Grand Traverse Herald commenced publication in 1858, and birth and death records were collected beginning in 1867.
