52, Mother Of Five, Dies Wednesday
Mrs. Ivory Daniel,
52, died at her home at River at 1:30 a.m., Wednesday, August 24, of complications
following a four-year illness. Born in Johnson County February 14, 1903,
the daughter of the late T. and Tiny Jarrell Ward, she had lived in the
vicinity of River all her life. She was a member of the Toms Creek Freewill
Baptist Church. Surviving are her husband, Seymour Daniel,
and five children; two daughters, Mrs. Gene Dutton, Wabash, Indiana, Mrs.
Willie Osborne, Barrett, W. Virginia; three sons, James Cecil, River, Raymond
Ray, Wabash, Indiana, and Robert J., U.S. Army. Also surviving are
a brother, General Ward, Decota, W. Virginia, a sister, Mrs. Robert Davidson,
Green Bay, Wisconsin, two half- sisters, Mrs. James Dutton, White House,
Mrs. Blaine Stacy, Patrick, and one half brother, Asbury Ward, West Van
Lear. Funeral services were conducted from the home Friday, August 26,
at 10:00 a.m., by Reverends Virgil Daniel and Millard VanHoose. Burial
was in the family cemetery at River under the direction of the Jones and

Former Sheriff, Dies August 30
Funeral Services
To Be Held Friday At Toms Creek Julius Daniel, 73, former Sheriff of Johnson
County, and member of one of the largest and oldest families in this vicinity,
died at 8:45 p.m., Tuesday, August 30, in a local hospital of a heart ailment.
He had been ill for several months. He was born in Johnson County on August
2, 1882, a son of Thomas and Amanda Daniel, and had been a resident of
Thealka for several years. Mr. Daniel was appointed Chief of Police of
Paintsville in 1930 and served in this office for several years.
In 1938 he was elected sheriff. He was always active in politics
and had once been engaged in coal mining as an occupation. Surviving are
his wife, Bessie VanHoose Daniel, three sons, Mitchell Daniel, and Carl
Daniel, both of Thealka, Auburn Daniel of River, and five daughters, Mrs.
Herschell VanHoose and Mrs. Foley North, both of Nippa, Mrs. Charles Spradlin
and Mrs. Troy Wheeler, both of Thealka, and Mrs. Jay Rickman of Detroit,
Michigan. Also surviving are several grandchildren and great- grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, September 2 at the Toms
Creek United Baptist Church. Burial will be in the family cemetery at Thealka

Father of Six
Is Killed by Lightning Bolt
Services Today
For Raymond Fairchild Raymond Fairchild, 32, of Wittensville, father of
six children, was killed by a bolt of lightning Monday afternoon on Barnett's
Creek, near the mouth of Big Mud Lick Creek. Fairchild and one of his brothers
had been on a fishing trip during the day, and the victim decided to go
to the brother's home to procure a young hunting dog. When he failed to
return, the brother started a search and found the dead man lying in a
foot path leading to his home. He was born April 23, 1923 in Johnson County,
a son of Levi and Lucy Hitchcock Fairchild and he was a veteran of World
War II. He followed the occupation of mining, but at the time of his death,
was employed by the L.O. Brayton Construction Company, in building rural
telephone lines in this locality. Surviving besides his parents are his
wife, Mary Blair Fairchild and the following children, Charles, Donald,
Paul, Ernest, Robert, and Judy, all at home, also four sisters, and six
bothers, Mrs. John Conley, Staffordsville, Mrs. Ray Preston, Minford, Ohio,
Mrs. Joe Henson, Mt. Sterling, Ky., Mrs. Charles Pelphrey of Paintsville,
Arthur and Son Fairchild, both of Wittensville, Walter, Volga, Russell,
Virgil and Espic, all of Staffordsville. Funeral services were held at
1:00 p.m. today at the Freewill Baptist Church at Rock House by the Reverend
Scott Griffith. Burial was made in the family cemetery under the direction

The funeral for
Miss Eva Lee Johnson, 17, who was instantly killed in an automobile accident,
August 15, was held August 18, 1955, at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church,
Paintsville, Ky with the pastor, Rev. Mahlon R. Thomason officiating assisted
by Rev. John E. Weir of the Mayo Methodist Church. Miss Johnson was converted
and baptized at the First Baptist Church in January of 1948. She
was active in church and school activities and had been a member of the
Paintsville Band for three years, this being her Senior year in high school.
She was talented in so many ways and a joy and blessing to her parents.
Interment was made in the Wells Cemetery under the direction of the Paintsville
Funeral Home. She is survived by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Johnson,
two brothers, Dwight and Keen, and a host of relatives and friends. Out
of town relatives and friends attending the funeral were; Mr. and Mrs.
Vernon Johnson, Mt. Sterling, Ky. Mr. and Mrs. Will Bishop, Mr. and
Mrs. Earl Bishop and son, Mrs. Maudie Speers, Mr. and Mrs. John W. Flanders,

Aged Resident Dies Wednesday
Mrs. Cora King,
82, life-long resident of Paintsville died Wednesday, August 24,
1955 at the King's Daughters Hospital, Ashland, from injuries suffered
in a fall eight days ago. The daughter of the late Mason and Amanda
Preston Mahan, she was born July 14, 1873. She was known to her many
friends in the community as "Aunt Dutch". She was preceded in death
in August 1922, by her first husband, A.J. (Dan) Price. She later
married S.P. King who preceded her in death in 1937. Surviving are
one daughter, Mrs. Roma Fox, Hampton, Va., two stepsons; Raymond
King, Paintsville, and Clarence King, Martin. Three stepdaughters; Mrs.
Lou Auxier, East Enterprise, Indiana, Elva Cunningham, Paintsville, and
Rebecca Patrick, Salyersville. Also surviving is one grandaughter, Mrs.
Francis Sullivan, Huntington, W.Va. Funeral services were held Friday afternoon
in the Preston Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. John Weir and the
Rev. M.R. Thomason officiating. Burial was made in the Mayo Cemetery under

Laney, 52 White House Man Passes Thursday
Services Sunday
for C & O employee Dave Laney, 52, died at his home at White
House at 6:05 a.m. Thursday. August 10, 1955 a victim of cancer.
He had been ill for the past three years. The son of Paul and Cordela
Crum Laney, he was born June 12, 1903 in Martin County. He had been
a resident of White House for the past seven years, and was employeed
by the C & O railway prior to his illness. He was a member of
the Freewill Baptist Church. He was married at White House, April
12, 1925 to May Smith who survives. Surviving besides the widow are
ten children; three daughters, Mrs. Ray Castle, Cordelia and Daisy
Laney, all of White House, seven sons; Ed, Dave, Wade, James, Joe, Bob
and Hobert Laney, all at home. Also surviving are four sisters; Mrs.
Mary Spencer, Davisport; Mrs. Ed Lemaster, Port Huron, Michigan;
Mrs. Pricilla Stambaugh, Yellow Springs, Ohio; Mrs. Margaret Smith,
Paintsville; Arlie, Offutt and Wade, Port Huron, Michigan, and one
grandchild. Funeral services were conducted from the Hammond Freewill
Baptist Church at 1:00 p.m. Sunday, August 14, by Jack Pruitt and
Clyde Bowlin. Burial was at the Spears Cemetery at River, under the

David B May,
64, a former Paintsville resident, died in Salyersville Sunday August 14,
1955, following a long illness. He had made his home in Salyersville for
the past several years. Born April 28, 1891, he was the son of Campbell
and Rebecca (Adams) May. He was married to the former Emma George, and
to this union 5 children were born, three of whom survive. They are
Chalmer May, Huntington, WV; Mrs. James (Reva) Meek, Jr. and Mrs. Denzel
(Mary Lena) Phelps of this city. Two sons, Raleigh and David, Jr. are deceased.
Also surviving are two brothers, Jim May of Salyersville and Frank May
of Wheelersburg, Ohio. Funeral services were conducted at the United Baptist
Church in Salyersville Tuesday, August 16, with the Rev. Harlan Montgomery
officiating. Burial was made in the Earl May Cemetery (Now called the Caleb
and James May Cemetery) under the direction of the Prater and Dunn Funeral
Home. NOTE:The Caleb and James May Cemetery (formerly called the Earl May
Cemetery) is located in Magoffin County on US460 toward West Liberty.
This is the cemetery where my first known MAY ancestor, Caleb and Margaret
(Patrick) May are buried, as well as his possible brother, James and Polly

Passes Tuesday Stroke Sunday Fatal To Sitka Resident
Rufus Maynard,
63 died Tuesday in a local hospital from a stroke suffered three days earlier.
Born April 20, 1889 in Johnson County, he was the son of Charlie and Margie
Maynard. He had been a resident of Sitka for the past four months. Surviving
are his wife, Goldie Maynard, two sons, Rufus Maynard, Jr., Staffordsville,
Johnny Maynard, Dayton, O., five daughters Mrs. Lucille Mayhan, Staffordsville;
Mrs. Estia Smallwood, Columbus, O., Mrs. Christine Culuahouse, Dayton,
O., Mrs. Shelby Jean Ratliff and Mrs. Roberta Maynard, both of Sitka. Also
surviving are the following brothers and sisters: Henry Pickelsimer, Sitka,
Joe Pickelsimer, Staffordsville, Alfred Maynard, Moundsville, WVa., Thelma
Williams and Laura Fraley both of Van Lear, Lottie Perkins, Staffordsville,
Dicie Diamond, Lexington. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday,
August 14, at the Freewill Baptist Church at Staffordsville with Rev. White
officiating. Burial will be made in the family cemetery under the direction

B. McKenzie,
88, died at his home at Meally Wednesday afternoon, August 31, 1955 following
a long illness. Born June 23, 1867, he was the son of the late William
and Nancy Rice McKenzie. He was a member of the Freewill Baptist
Church. A resident of Meally for the past 28 years, he was a retired
miner. Surviving are; his wife, Hattie Frazier McKenzie; two sons, Walter
McKenzie, Meally, and L. T. McKenzie, Columbus, Ohio; six daughters, Mrs.
Ethel Samples, Columbus, Ohio, Mrs. Georgia Williams, Columbus, Ohio, Mrs.
Nannie Price, Ypsilanti, Michigan, Mrs. June Cooper, Omar, W. Virginia,
Mrs. Dorothy Preston, Meally, and Mrs. Mary Alice McCoy, Prestonsburg,
Kentucky, and one sister, Miss Minnie McKenzie, Staffordsville. Funeral
services were conducted at 10:00 a.m. Saturday at the Church of Christ
at Meally with Millard VanHoose and F. S. VanHoose officiating. Music
was by the Toms Creek Quartet. Burial was in the McKenzie Cemetery
at Staffordsville under the direction of the Paintsville Funeral Home.

FOR MEEK INFANT
Services were
held Sunday for Allen Ray Meek, 20-months-old son of William and Doris
Williams Meek of Los Angeles, California, who died in a Children’s Hospital
in New Mexico Tuesday, August 16. The body was brought by plane from California
to Chicago, Ill., arriving in this city Saturday morning by train. Surviving
besides the parents are the maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Colvin
Williams, South Gate, Calif., and the paternal grandfather, Bill Meek,
Wheelwright, Ky. Also surviving is a sister, Mary Jane. Services
were conducted from the home of Essie Newson at Botis Branch at 2:00 p.m.,
by Cullie Sparks and G. B. Preston. Burial was in the Sparks Cemetery
at Bobs Branch under the direction of the Preston Funeral Home. Paintsville

MILES, Jack Dempsey

Napier Indicted
For Murder In Miles Death White House Man Stabbed Fatally The grand jury
of the Johnson County Circuit Court indicted Irvin Napier of White House
Tuesday on a charge of wilful murder for the fatal stabbing of Jack Dempsey
Miles, 28, also of White House. The stabbing is said to have occured at
Napier's home on August 31, where the victim died a short time later.The
cause of the trouble was not learned. Napier's bond was set at $5000.00.
County Attorney R. B. Harrington said yesterday witnesses had testified
that both men were under the influence of intoxicants at the time, and
that the wounds on Miles were inflicted with a butcher's knife. Miles received
two minor wounds and a third wound in the chest cavity caused the death,
according to the coroner. A court of inquiry was held on Thursday, September
1. Napier is said to have surrendered to local officers and was held on
a charge of drunkeness pending grand jury action. The victim is survived
by his parents, Fred and Virginia Ann Akers Miles of White House, and four
brothers, Monterville Miles, and John Lee Miles, both of White House, Eugene
Miles, Defiance, Ohio, and Jesse James Miles of Lafayette, Ind. Funeral
services were held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday at the home of John Lee Miles
by Harry Salyers, J. H. Short, and Pete Sites. Burial was made in the family

Alvin Murray,
76, succumbed Wednesday, August 31, at the home of his sister-in-law, Mrs.
Vlonn Murray, at Lowmansville. Born February 25, 1879 he was the son of
the late Sam and Jane Murray. A lifelong resident of Lowmansville,
he was a farmer by occupation. He is survived by one brother, Frank Murray.
Funeral services were conducted at 10:00 a.m. Friday at the home of his
sister-in-law with the Rev. Foster Grim officiating. Burial was made in
the family cemetery at Lowmansville under the direction of the Jones and

Marion Thacker,
65, a retired miner, died Sunday in a Veterans Hospital in Mountain Home,
Tennessee, following an illness of two and one-half years. Born March 29,
1890 in Pike County, Ky., he had been a resident of Manila for a number
of years. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Laura Imogene Conley Thacker.
The body will arrive Thursday morning at the Jones and Preston Funeral

SERVICES CONDUCTED
TUESDAY AT LEANDER Walter Vaughn, 77, retired schoolteacher, died of a
heart attack at his home at Leander at 11:30 p.m., Sunday, August 7 1955.
The son of the late John and Sarah Mace Vaughan, he was born March 16,
1878, in Floyd County. He was a member of the Freewill Baptist Church and
the Masonic Lodge. One of the county`s outstanding tgeachers and a leader
in the educational field, he was widely know in this section where his
energies were directed toward the development of the youth of the communities
and the advancement of educational opportunities. His wife Callie Conley
Vaughan, preceded him in death two years ago. He is survived by one son,
Nolan Vaughan, Leander, who is a teacher in the Johnson County Schools.
Funeral services were conducted from the Leander School Tuesday, August
9, at 1:00 p.m., by Scott Castle. Music was by the Toms Creek Quartet.
Burial was in the family cemetery under the direction of the Paintsville

German Cyrus
(Gus) Wells, 54, prominent Paintsville merchant and a member of one of
the country's oldest and most outstanding families, died suddently at his
home on Second Street on August 12. His death was caused by a heart
attack. He was owner of the Wells Shoe Store on the Corner of Main and
Court Streets which he had operated successfully for approximately 30 years.
Recently he had become interested in farming and had spent much of his
time at his farm on the river near Thelma. A leader in all conservation
programs, he devoted much of his time to local farmers in establishing
practices for conserving our natural resources. At the time of his
death he was serving as State Soil Conservation Director. Mr. Wells, a
son of William Allen and Mary Hicks Wells, was born at Williamsport December
5, 1890. He was married to Cora Blair of this city on August 1, 1916.
In his early childhood he became a member of the Methodist Church and at
the time of his death was a member of the May Memorial Methodist Church.
He was also a member of Masonic Lodge No. 381 of Paintsville and was president
of the Johnson County Soil Conservation Committee. He was widely
known throughout the county and state for his activities in civic, religious,
and political affairs, and was co-chairman of the recent Combs-for-Governer
campaign in the county. An outstanding citizen of the community, he was
also a devoted and loving husband and father. Surviving are his wife and
three children, Mrs. Mary Katherine Schmitt, Frank Allen Wells, and Elbridge
Davis Wells, all of this city, and five grandchildren, Michael, Nancy Katherine,
and Ruth Schmitt, and Allen and Tommy Wells. Also surviving are two
sisters, Mrs. Malissa Perry, Louisa and Mrs. George Walters of Shoals,
W. Va., and two brothers, R. G. Wells of Pikesville, and John L. Wells
of this city. An infant son, German Cyrus Well, Jr., preceeded him in death.
Funeral services were held at 2:00 Sunday by the Reverend Charles Perry
assisted by Reverand John E. Weir and the Reverend Paul Bell. Pallbearers
were six members of the Paintsville Masonic Lodge, Lacy Puckett, Clyde
Damron, Mack Damron, Millard Vance, Roy Van Hoose, and, Charles Hughes.
Final rites were conducted by the Masonic Lodge at the graveside. Burial
was made in the old Wells Cemetry at Boons Camp under the direction of

Mrs. Callie Yates,
81, lifelong resident of Riceville, died at her home Friday morning following
an illness of several months. Born March 15, 1874, she was the daughter
of the late Tom and Margaret Brown Williams. She was preceded in death
six months ago by her husband Jim Yates. Surviving are two sons, Elva Yates,
Baltimore, Maryland, and Charlie Yates, Riceville; one brother, B. Williams,
Collista; five sisters, Mrs. Lula Pelphrey, Paintsville, Mrs. Zella Rice,
New Boston, Ohio, Mrs. Evaline Blair, Beaver, Ohio, Mrs. Lona
Blanton, Oil Springs and Mrs. Flora Whitt, Ashland. Funeral services were
held Sunday at the Long Fork United Baptist Church with Foster Rigsby,
Vancil Pelphrey and Leonard Walters as officiating ministers. Burial was
made in the family cemetery under the direction of the Paintsville Home.

Young, 60, of Columbus, Ohio, a native of Johnson County, died August 18
in a Columbus hospital. He was born October 18, 1894, son of the later
William W. and Rachel Emily Lemaster Young. He was a mechanic and
had been employed in Columbus for the past 27 years, moving there from
Louisa. Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Ethel Young of Huntington, two
sons Frederick Young of Toledo, Ohio, and William E. Young Jr.., Huntington,
six sisters, Mrs. Marshall Redwitz, Louisville, Mrs. W. I. Carter,
Catlettsburg, Mrs. Ealey Lemaster and Mrs. E. H. McKenzie, both of Volga,
Mrs. Clarence L. Carter, Ashland and Mrs. Dock Adkins of Louisa. Funeral
