COOPER, John Hannibal
1872-1957
PAINTSVILLE LAWYER DIES
Funeral Services Thursday At First Christian Church
John Hannibal Cooper, born August 1, 1872, died December 17, 1957, content that he had achieved his two ambitions, to live an honest lawyer and die a Christian gentleman. A talent for both was bred into him. His father, Judge Archibald Cooper and his mother, Mary Minerva Litteral, were each a distillation of long lines of staunchly honest, Scotch-Irish and English tradespeople, lawyers, preachers and doctors.  His father and his brother, H. H. Cooper, were respected members of the Salyersville Bar and after a basic education at John R. Long's "Medina Seminary" at Oil Springs and John Wheatley's School at Paintsville; after reading law, in the law offices of Ben Conley and T. S. Kirk at Paintsville, and after passing his bar examination under Judge J. F. Bailey, John Hannibal Cooper returned to Salyersville and practiced briefly with his father and brother, their shingle reading proudly, "Cooper and Cooper". The opportunity for service lured John Hannibal briefly away from his chosen profession. Realizing the dire need of his people for more efficient communications in those steamboating days just before the Mayo coal boom and the run of the century, and learning of Alexander Graham Bell's new invention, he organized the first telephone company in the Eastern Kentucky mountains and moved with it to Louisa.  Having seen his mother and his sisters labor long hours with needle and thread, another invention, Elias Howe's sewing machine, caught his fancy and when the old C & O, the Elizabethtown, Lexington and Big Sandy Railroad Company, extended its branch line from Catlettsburg up the Big Sandy to haul out the Mayo coal, its earliest cargo included Singer sewing machines assigned to John Hannibal Cooper and destined to relieve some mountain housewife of much of her drudgery.  His Singer sewing machine business brought John Hannibal Cooper from Louisa back to Paintsville where he met and on April 27, 1904, married Beatrice Preston, daughter of Thomas S. and Victoria Spradlin Preston.  To this long and happy union were born: Hysell P. Cooper, who died June 13, 1957, a Rear Admiral, retired, United States Navy; Lawrence Cooper, who died in infancy, and Victoria McEldowney, R.T. "Tommy" Cooper and John E. Cooper, who survive him.  His good wife, Beatrice, preceded him in death, October 12, 1950. In 1918, the discovery of the Johnson-Magoffin oil pool persuaded John Hannibal to part company with his sewing machines and for a few hectic years he followed the spoor of the oil rigs and ox-drawn casing and tanks.  Then-his wanderings behind him-and the heat gone from his blood, he came home to his first love, the practice of law and pursued it diligently the rest of his days.  This old brother neither looked for nor found fame or riches, but he did achieve through loyal and honest service as lawyer to his people, a contentment, a satisfaction and a respect that surpasses the other.  He served one term as police judge and one term as commonwealth's attorney but it was in the simple duties of his profession, in helping some little man with a big problem, that he found his peace and his place. His other love was his church. The First Christian Church was almost as young as John Hannibal when he joined it shortly after the turn of the century.  He served it faithfully, as Sunday Shcool superintendent, as trustee, as deacon, as elder and simply as member of the congregation.  In its struggling years, he was one of the pillars of strength.  On many a bleak Sunday, when there was no preacher, John Hannibal was at the door to welcome the earliest worshippers. This good man died an Elder Emeritus of the First Christian Church and an honorary director of the Johnson County Bar Association.  His years were good years and he takes with him the love of his family, the gratitude of the people, and the respect of his profession. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, December 19, at the First Christian Church. Burial will be made in the Wells-Buckingham Cemetery here.
