JOHNSON COUNTY — Emma Adkins, 89, of Paintsville, died Saturday, Jan.
29, 2005 at her residence. Born March 22, 1915, in Johnson County, she
was a daughter of the late Sol and Susan Alice Lemasters Blevins. She
was a member of Buffalo United Baptist Church. She was preceded in
death by her husband, Benny Adkins, in 1993. Survivors include six
sons, Benny Adkins Jr. of Van Lear, Lon Adkins, Joe Adkins, Harold
Adkins, all of Paintsville, Marvin Adkins of Hager Hill, and William
Adkins of New Carlisle, Ohio; two daughters, Martha Adkins of
Springfield, Ohio, and Sula Reed of Tutor Key; 20 grandchildren; 24
great-grandchildren; four step- grandchildren; and one
step-great-grandchild. Funeral services were Tuesday, Feb. 1, at
Buffalo United Baptist Church with Eulas Adams, John Blanton, John
Mollette and Doug Preston officiating. Burial was in Holbrook Cemetery,

ALLEN, Timothy Ray Allen
1965-2005
MAGOFFIN COUNTY — Timothy Ray Allen, 39, of Salyersville, died Sunday,
Jan. 30, 2005 at his residence. Born Oct. 25, 1965, in Johnson County,
he was a son of the late Custer and Thelma Jean Adkins Allen. He was a
self-employed logger and a member of Salyersville First Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Suzanne Montgomery Allen of Salyersville; a
son, Nicholas Blake Allen of Salyersville; four brothers, Larry Dale
Allen of West Liberty, Phillip Ricky Allen of Ezel, and Randy Allen and
Custer Allen Jr., both of Salyersville; and two sisters, Connie Keeton
and Patty Sue Mann, both of Salyersville. Funeral services were
Tuesday, Feb. 1, at First Baptist Church, Salyersville, with Matthew
Gullion officiating. Burial was in Allen Family Cemetery, Harper, under

Graveside services were held Sunday, January 30, 2 p.m. at the Rose
Hill Cemetery for Bula Bailey Alley, 64, of Ashland, Ky., who passed
away Thursday, January 27 at the Best Care Nursing Home in
Wheelersburg, Ohio. Mrs. Alley was born October 31, 1940 in
Paintsville, Ky., daughter of the late Hurst and Zelda VanHoose Bailey.
She was a waitress. She was also preceded in death by two brothers,
Fred and Wassie Bailey. Surviving are her husband, Roy K. Alley; one
son, Mark (Jerri) Alley of Fayetteville, Ohio; one daughter, Sheila
(Paul) Fraley of Catlettsburg, Ky.; three brothers, Dave and Farrell
Bailey, both of Grayson, Ky., and Charles Bailey of Dade City, Fla.;
five sisters, Jean DesJardin of Lake, Mich., Jennie Klug of Detroit,
Mich., Ponnie Prucnell of Sandpoint, Mich., Martha Ward of Snyder,
Ind., and Faye Music of Ashland, Ky.; one granddaughter, Emily Alley.
The service was officiated by Pastor David Herndon. Arrangements under

Lou Vernia Age 79 of Fairborn, passed away Saturday, January 15, 2005
in the Wright Nursing Home. Lou was born, October 15, 1925 in
Paintsville, Kentucky, the daughter of the late Martin & Eunice
Castle. Lou was retired from Duffs after 23 years, and was a member of
the Maple Ave., Church of God. Survivors include her children, Jewell
Brock of Fairborn, Sharon Jones of Chicago, Illinois and Roger
Baldridge of Denham Springs, Louisiana. 4 Grandchildren, 5 Great-
Grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thurman in
1985 and two brothers, Lloyd & Floyd Castle. A gathering of family
& friends will be held in the Burcham Funeral Home, 119 E. Main
St., Fairborn, from 6-8 p.m., Monday, with services being conducted at
11:00 a.m., Tuesday, January 18, 2005, with Pastor Jim Clayton,
officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Hills, Cemetery, Tipp City.

Jones-Preston Funeral Chapel for Carl Francis Blair, 89, of
Staffordsville, Ky., who passed away Sunday, January 16, 2005 at his
residence. Mr. Blair was born June 11, 1915 in Johnson County, Ky., son
of the late Leonard and Bertha Brown Blair. He was a retired coal
miner. Surviving are his wive, Louise Horne Blair of Staffordsville,
Ky.; nine sons, Francis, Eldon and John Blair, all of Barnetts Creek,
Ky., Gerald Blair of Wakeman, Ohio, Phillip and Robie Ray Blair, both
of Denver, Ky., Carl “Junior” Blair of Leander, Ky., Neal Blair of
Nippa, Ky., and Ricky Blair of Fayetteville, N.C.; five daughters, Fern
May of Denver, Ky., Jean Dawson of Hager Hill, Ky., Kathy Meade of Flat

Jan. 29, 2005 at his residence. Born Sept. 26, 1926, in Johnson County,
he was a son of the late John B. and Rosie Colvin Blair. He was a
janitor retired from Oil Springs school and member of the United
Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife, Maxine P. Blair of
Staffordsville; and a sister, Maxie Powers of Salyersville. Funeral
services were Tuesday, Feb. 1, at Paintsville Funeral Home with Elders
Frankie Williams, Danny Williams, Buster Blanton, and Fred Salyers

JOHNSON COUNTY — James Rufus Booth, 76, of River, died Friday, Jan. 28,
2005 at his residence. Born April 13, 1928, in Lawrence County, he was
a son of the late Jackie Booth and Pearl Booth Gunnells. He was a
carpenter. Survivors include his wife, Margaret Ratliff Booth of River;
three sons, Mont Booth of Oil Springs, and Kenneth Booth and Greg
Booth, both of River; a daughter, Brenda Ward of River; three brothers,
Jack Booth of Stone, Ernest Booth of Ashville, Ohio, and Robert Booth
of River; two sisters, Arlena Booth of Ashtabula, Ohio, and Ollie Wiley
of Salyersville; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Paintsville, with James Roger VanHoose and Gorden Ward officiating.

JOHNSON COUNTY — Kathy Stamper Bryant, 43, of Paintsville, died
Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2005 at Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital, Russell.
Born Aug. 28, 1961, in Johnson County, she was a daughter of Charles R.
Stamper of Paintsville and the late Marie Fyffe Stamper. She was a bank
teller with Citizens National Bank. Additional survivors include her
husband, Duane Bryant of Paintsville; a son, Christopher Duane Bryant
of Paintsville; a brother, Danny Stamper of Georgetown; and two
sisters, Bonnie Keaton and Patsy Stamper, both of Paintsville. Funeral
services were Friday, Jan. 28, at Rockhouse Free Will Baptist Church,
Staffordsville, with Richard Williams and James McKenzie officiating.

JOHNSON COUNTY — Vivian Marie McCloud Castle, 91, of Paintsville, died
Saturday, Jan. 9, 2005 at Three Rivers Medical Center, Louisa. Born
Aug. 1, 1913, in Johnson County, she was a daughter of the late William
Ireland and Hattie Conley McCloud. She was a homemaker. She was
preceded in death by her husband, James Castle; a son, Allen Dale
Castle; and a daughter, Shirley Ann Kindle. Survivors include six sons,
Roger Willis Castle and Jim Castle, both of Paintsville; Charles Castle
of Middlesborogh, Fla., Larry Gene Castle of Whitebluff, Tenn., Robert
Lee Castle of Thelma, and William Joseph Castle of Staffordsville; six
daughters, Louise McGowan and Linda Alshalchy, both of Port Orange,
Fla., Betty Morgan of Pikeville, Malta Roberts of Flatwoods, and Patsy
Castle and Debra Kay Price, both of Paintsville; 22 grandchildren; 29

Baptist Church in Paintsville, Ky., for Allene Blair Colvin, 66, of
Paintsville, Ky., who passed away Thursday, January 20 at Paul B. Hall
Regional Medical Center in Paintsville, Ky. Mrs. Colvin was born July
8, 1938 in Johnson County, Ky., daughter of Lonnie Blair and the late
Neva Pack Blair. She worked for Paul B. Hall Regional Medical Center
with the Disease Control Administration. She was also preceded in death
by one brother, Elwood Blair. Surviving are her husband, James F.
Colvin of Paintsville, Ky.; two sons, Mike (Kelly), and Mark (Anita)
Colvin, both of Paintsville, Ky.; two sisters, Peggy Legg of Frankfort,

was a daughter of the late Sonny C. and Icie Burchett Stapleton. She
was a waitress. Survivors include her husband, Raymond Cottle of
Paintsville; two sons, Gregory Allen Cottle of Iraq, and James Earl
Cottle of Paintsville; a daughter, Charlene Crowe of Indianapolis,
Ind.; three brothers, Rex Stapleton of Huber Heights, Ohio, Virgil

was a daughter of the late Russell and Eulah Daniel Castle. She was
preceded in death by her husband, Donald Craven, in 1965. Survivors
include two sons, Roger Wilcox of Goshen, Ohio, and Guy Russell Wilcox
of Maryland; a daughter, Nancy Scott of Hamilton, Ohio; two brothers,

Sunday, Jan. 30, 2005 at J.J. Jordan Geriatric Center, Louisa. Born
Nov. 16, 1919, in Johnson County, he was a son of the late Frank and
Izora Harless Daniels. He was a coal miner and a WW II Navy veteran. He
was preceded in death by his wife, Bess Adkins Daniels. Survivors
include a son, Charles Daniels of Paintsville; a brother, Robert A.
"Bob" Daniels of Van Lear; two sisters, Bessie McCoart of Van Lear, and

Howard, Golden Howard, Enny Howard, and Denny Howard; and three

in Paintsville, Ky. Mrs. Jones was born January 24, 1913 at Denver,
Ky., daughter of the late Leander and Dora Estep Bayes. She was a

son of the late John Kennard and Maude Adams. He was a Korean Veteran.
Survivors include his wife, Lawanna Wells Kennard; a brother, J.B.
Kennard of Dayton; and a sister, Malta Titlo of Dayton. Funeral

Lee Sparks. He was a park ranger at Dewey Lake on Johns Creek and a 1st
Marine 25 year veteran. Survivors include his wife, Miriam Shaar Lee of
Richmond; a son, Joseph Joe Lee of Salisbury, N.C.; a daughter, Julie
Lee Spears of Richmond; a brother, Leon Lacey Lee of Dayton, Ohio; a
sister, Beta Stawn of Darlington, S.C.; six grandchildren; and one

passed away at 10:38 a.m.
Wednesday, January 5, 2005 in Community Hospital. He was born February
11, 1925 in Lowmansville, Kentucky the son of Roy and Zella (Stevens)
Lowe. Mr. Lowe was a retired farmer. Survivors include brothers and
sisters: Audrey Lyons, Springfield, Leroy (Nora) Lowe, Texas, Grace
(Harry) Tombleson, Florida, Leslie (Glenda) Lowe, Texas, Datha Nelson,
Springfield, Verlia Sue (Jerry) Kuykahil, South Carolina, Herbert Lowe,
Springfield, and numerous and nieces and nephews. HE was preceded in
death by his parents and two sisters, Juanita Johnson and Ireta
Edwards. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday IN

Eleanor McCarty. He was a paramedic with the city of Paintsville and a
member of Hager Hill Freewill Baptist Church. Additional survivors
include his wife, Amy Hicks McCarty of Emma; a son, Joshua McCarty of
Wittensville; three stepsons, Justin Adkins, Joey Adkins, and Josh
Adkins, all of Prestonsburg; a stepdaughter, Allie Adkins of

William H. "Bill" 83, of Springfield went home to be with the Lord at
8:45 a.m. Saturday, January 8, 2005 in the Odd Fellows Home. He was
born March 13, 1921 in Johnson County, Kentucky, the son of John and
Julla (Diles) McKenzie. Mr. McKenzie was retired from the Brain Lumber
Company. Survivors include two daughters, Normazene (Buddie) Tuttle and
Teresa McKenzie all of Springfield; five grandchildren, Laura (Thomas)
Magoto, Brian (Jennifer) Tuttle, Douglas R. Black Jr., Heather Mader
and Aundrea Black; eight great-grandchildren, Elijah and Kyla Tuttle,
Thomas and Austin Magoto, Lahela and Zeith Black, Macy and Breeana
McDonald; one brother, Johnny McKenzie of Kentucky and numerous nieces
and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wives, Gladys McKenzie and
Margie McKenzie; granddaughter, Tammy Tuttle; his parents; five sisters

Salyersville. He was a pipe fitter with Ashland Oil Company, Ashland,
and was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran. Additional survivors include his
wife, Judy Arnett Minix of Royalton; a daughter, Cambridge Minix of
Royalton; and two sisters, Lynn Blanton and Janelle Howard, both of

PATRICK, Josie Age 90, of Beavercreek, Oh, passed away on Thursday,
January 6, 2005, at the Dayspring Healthcare Center. She was born
September 9, 1914, in Paintsville, KY, to Eliphas Turner Ashby Williams
and Minerva (Van Hoose) Williams, who preceded her in death. She was
also preceded in death by her husband, William Roy Patrick, in 1998.
Josie is survived by three daughters, Janet and husband, Terry G.
Montgomery, of Huber Heights, OH, Linda Caspar, of Beavercreek, OH, and
Diana and husband, Jim Ebert, of Beavercreek, OH; one son, David and
wife, Karen Patrick, of Huber Heights; son-in-law, Robert L. Caspar,

Shannon Montgomery, Andrea Montgomery, Bobby and Annie Caspar, Josh,
Jami, and Jordan Ebert; two great grandchildren, Alyssa Ebert, and Alex

in death by his parents, Don and Mary Preston. Doug is survived by his
loving wife of 14 years, Loretta; daughter, Stephanie (Ed) Snyder of
Rochester, MN; two sons, Darrell (Pam) York, of Jellico, TN and Brian
York of Glen Ellyn, IL; sister, Margie (Kenneth) Williams; brothers,
Robert (Diane) and Donald (Thelma) Preston, all of Michigan; stepson,
Rob Lewis of West Carrollton; stepdaughters, Rhonda (Rick) Olt of
Taylorsville, KY, Cheryl (Kent) Aufdemkampe of Troy, OH; grandchildren,
Kelsey, Eddie, and Tanner Snyder and Kara and Dana York; great
grandson, Austin; step grandchildren, Allysa Olt, Clinton Lewis, Ricky
Jones, Nikki Jones, and Justin Aufdemkampe; special niece by marriage,

JOHNSON COUNTY — Shirley Scott Preston, 81, of Paintsville, died
Friday, Jan. 7, 2005 at Paul B. Hall Regional Medical Center,
Paintsville. Born Sept. 29, 1923, in Louisa, she was a daughter of the
late Will T. and Emma Smith Scott. She was a secretary with the
Kentucky State Department and a member of First Baptist Church. She was
preceded in death by her husband, Hansel Preston; and a son, Scott
Preston. Survivors include a daughter, Judy Lee VanHoose of
Paintsville; two sisters, Mildred Pack of Morehead and Billie Jean King
of Paintsville; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were Monday, Jan. 10, at First Baptist Church with
Rev. Hoge Hockensmith officiating. Burial was in Highland Memorial

James Curtis Ratliff, 64, of George Hollow Road, Waverly, OH, died
Sunday, January 9, 2005, at Adena Regional Medical Center, Chillicothe,
OH. He was born April 11, 1940, in Paintsville, KY, the son of the late
Curtis Ratliff and Cora (Tackett) Ratliff, of Waverly, OH. June 18,
1960, James was united in marriage to Patricia Ann (Pack) Ratliff, who
survives. Also surviving are two sons, Gary (Stephanie) Ratliff and
Jimmy Ray (Catherine) Ratliff, both of Chillicothe, OH; three
daughters, Brenda (Mike) Tackett, Teresa Marie Johnson and Ruth Ann
(Lloyd O.) Caldwell, all of Chillicothe, OH; 17 grandchildren; two
great- grandchildren; two brothers, Jesse (Janet) Ratliff, of Waverly,
OH, and Wayne (Tish) Ratliff, of Williamsport, OH; one sister, Emma
Faye Higley, of Waverly; three nephews; and two nieces. In addition to
his father, Jim was preceded in death by a daughter, Margarette Ann
Ratliff; a mother-in-law, Della Mae Dixon; fathers- in-law, Pete Dixon
and Bill Pack; and a brother-in-law, Fred Higley. James was a retired
timberworker and attended Sandy Chapel Enterprise Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, January 12, 2005, in
Boyer Funeral Home, Waverly, with Brother Lloyd Tackett officiating.
Burial will follow in Omega Cemetery, Waverly, OH. Friends may call

Heartland of Beavercreek. Mrs. Short was born July 3, 1905 in Johnson
County, Ky., daughter of the late Charlie and Colista Hall Craft. She
was also preceded in death by her husband, William M. “Bill” Short; one

SMITH, Hazel 93, of Springfield, Ohio died Saturday morning, January
29, 2005 in the I.O.O.F. Home. She was born in Johnson County, Kentucky
on October 27, 1911 the daughter of the late Frank and Sarah Jane
(Smith) Rigsby. Survivors include four daughters, Dorothy Moore of
Springfield, Janet (Dale) Longsworth of Marysville, Mary Douglas of
Springfield, and Hazel (Jeff) Heath of Xenia; four sons, Raymond
(Connie) Salyer of Springfield, Donald (Diane) Salyer of San Jose,
California, James (Shirley) Salyer of Cable, and Roger (Naomi) Salyer
of Urbana; thirty grandchildren; many great-grandchildren and
great-great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Her first
husband, Normal Salyer; second husband, Charles Ed Smith; a daughter,
Joyce Willmeth; two sons, Normal Salyer Jr. and Thomas Salyer; seven
sisters, Mary Moore, Vera Skaggs, Ettie Keaton, Nannie Sparks, Ruthy
Rigsby, Maxie Rigsby, and Esther Adams; a brother, Frank Lee Rigsby
Jr.; and six grandchildren preceded her in death. A gathering of family
and friends will be held from 5-8 p.m. Monday in the LITTLETON &

Grove United Baptist Church for Lora Sparks, 88, of Paintsville, Ky.,
who passed away Monday, January 31 2005 at Mountain Manor Nursing Home
of Paintsville, Ky. Miss Sparks was born August 28, 1916 at Flat Gap,
Ky., daughter of the late Lafe and Ellen Salyer Sparks. She was a
homemaker. Mrs. Sparks was a member of the Sugar Grove United Baptist
