Preston Funeral Home was in charge of the funeral arrangements for Sam Allen Jr., 79, who died Wednesday, June 13, 2001, at Paul B. Hall Regional Medical Center. Mr. Allen was born December 2, 1922, in Magoffin County, to the late Sam and Susie Salyers Allen. Surviving his death are his wife Liza Allen; one son, Jimmy Allen of Parker, Colorado; one daughter Carol Hager of Paintsville; one sister Linda Beale; and four grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. The funeral service was held Monday, at the Preston Funeral Home Chapel. Officiating the service was Rev. Larry Blair. Burial followed at the Wells Cemetery in Paintsville.   PH
     
ARROWOOD, Lydia Mae (Ward)
1913-2001
Lydia Mae Ward Arrowood, 87, of St. Albans died June 23, 2001, at home. She was born Dec. 25, 1913, in Johnson County, Ky.  She was co-owner of B.D. Arrowood Jewelers, South Charleston, was a Protestant and a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Burl D. Arrowood, and her son, Bill Arrowood. Surviving: daughter, Mary Evelyn Frame of St. Albans; sister, Bette Daniel of Paintsville, Ky.; five grandchildren; five great- grandchildren. Service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 26, at Snodgrass Funeral Home, South Charleston, with the Rev. Joe Hyde officiating. Entombment will be in Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans. Shellie Reed Baldwin, 83, of Staffordsville, died Friday Jun.01 2001 at her home. Mrs. Baldwin was born July 11, 1917, in Fuget, a daughter of the late Columbus and Lourisse Alice Blanton Reed. Her husband, Curtis E. Baldwin, died in 1981. Surviving are two sons, Harold Baldwin and Darrell Baldwin, both of Staffordsville, and four grandchildren. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Old Little Paint United Baptist Church by Elders Jake Crum, Douglas Ward, James R. Blair, Jerry Colvin and Claude Mollette. Burial will be in Baldwin Cemetery in Oil Springs. Friends may call today and until time of the service Tuesday at Jones-Preston Funeral Home in Paintsville.

BARNETT, Ann (Vaughn)
1939-2001
Ann V. Barnett, 61, of Garrett, died Thursday Jun.28 2001 in Paul B. Hall Medical Center in Paintsville. Mrs. Barnett was born Sept. 13, 1939, in  Floyd County, a daughter of the late Jim and Cressie Vaughn. Her husband, Boyd Barnett, also preceded her in death. Surviving are a son, Doug Barnett of Garrett; three daughters, Eva Jane Hall of Oil Springs, Betty Wright of East Point and Pam Cantrell of Paintsville; a brother, Jim Bob Vaughn of Paintsville; and six grandchildren. The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Sunday at Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home in Martin by Bethel Bolen. Burial will be in the family cemetery in Oil Springs. BASHAM, Brian Adair

Brian Adair Basham, 28, of Salyersville, died Thursday Jun.14 2001 in Paul B. Hall Medical Center in Paintsville. Mr. Basham was born June 8, 1972, in Johnson County, a son of Charles and Vickie Salyer Basham. He was employed by Mineral Labs and member of Lakeville Freewill Baptist Church. Additional survivors include his wife, Ronda Jenkins Basham; and a half sister, Beverly Jean Jones of Key West, Fla. The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday at Magoffin County Funeral Home in Salyersville by Justin Williams, Roy Coffey and Floyd Arnett. Burial will be in Bluegrass Cemetery in Salyersville.


BLAIR, Fannie Mae (Litteral)
1915-2001
Fannie Mae Blair, of New Castle, Pa., formerly of Paintsville, died Wednesday Jun.13 2001. Mrs. Blair was born April 18, 1915, in Johnson County, the daughter of the late Roy and Daisy Williams Litteral. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Paul Blair. She is survived by four brothers, Robert Litteral of Grand Rapids, Mich., George Litteral of New York, Ernest Litteral of Washington Court House, Ohio, and Hobert Litteral of Mount Sterling, Ohio; and two sisters, Joan Burke of Washington Court House and Louette Turner of Mount Sterling, Ohio. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at Tutor Key Enterprise Baptist Church by Donald Lemasters. Burial will be in Highland Memorial Park in Staffordsville. Friends may call after 10 a.m. Friday at the church. Preston Funeral Home in Paintsville is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Blanton was born June 13, 1978, in Johnson County, to Wanda Gail Blanton and the late Charles P. Pigg. Also preceding him in death are two sisters, Andrea Gail Helton and Paula Jo Shannon. Sammy Blevins, 49, died Wednesday, June 27, 2001 at Central Baptist Hospital, Lexington. Mr. Blevins was born July 16, 1951, in Johnson County, to Walter and Elva Goble Blevins. Also preceding him in death are one son, Michael Blevins. Surviving are his wife, Evelyn Ramey Blevins; two daughters, Samantha Blanton and Katlin Blevins of Van Lear; three brothers, Emery Blevins, William Blevins and Nero Blevins all of West Van Lear; four sisters, Louella Kestner and Joyce Kestner of Hager Hill; Norma Kestner of West Van Lear; and Amelia Goddfrey of Fayetteville, North Carolina. Also surviving are four grandchildren. Funeral services were held Saturday, June 30, 1 p.m., at the Van Lear Freewill Baptist Church. Officiating the service was Roger Hill and Paul Wayne Browning. Jean Brubaker, 73, of Falcon, died Wednesday Jun.20 2001 in Paul B. Hall Medical Center in Paintsville. Mrs. Brubaker was born Aug. 19, 1927, in Ohio, a daughter of the late Oram Alfred and Alison Burnside. She was a retired cook and a member of the Church of God. Surviving are her husband, Joseph Brubaker; two sons, Charles Brubaker of Salyersville and Bill Westfall of Bellefountain, Ohio; a brother, Bill Burnside of Arizona; a sister, Janet Brunks of Ohio; two grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Salyersville Funeral Home by Tim Watkins. Burial will be in Tackett Cemetery in Salyersville. Friends may call from 6 to 10 p.m. today and until time of the service Friday at the funeral home.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, for Earl Wateman Castle, 74, who died Sunday, June 24, 2001, at Kings Daughters Medical Center. Mr. Castle was born March 31, 1927, in Johnson County, to the late Corbett and Ethel Huff Castle. He was retired from the Air Force and he was also a member of the Government Heights Baptist Church of Tucson, Arizona. Also proceeding him in death are two brothers, Charles Douglas and Robert Doyle Castle; and two sisters, Oneida Carol Witten and Billie Jean Castle. Surviving his death are his wife Norma King Castle; one step-son, Jim Morris of California; one step-daughter, Pauline Clark of South Carolina; one brother Corbett Nolan Castle of Dayton, Ohio; and four sisters, Mary Louis Dixon of West Alexandria, Ohio; Sharon Hannah of Hager Hill; Sandra Castle of Wittensville; and Donna McCarty of Oil Springs. Also surviving are five step-grandchildren and six step-great grandchildren. The funeral service was held at the Jones-Preston Funeral Home Chapel. Officiating the service was Garmon D. Preece. He was preceded in death by his wife, Flossie Edwards. Surviving are his wife, Murrel Castle; six daughters, Patsy Clark of Springfield, Ohio; Kathleen Thompson and Phyllis Jean, both of Lowmansville; Wilma Blevins of Hager Hill; Saundra Mae Hall of London; and Dena Lynn Fannin of Red Bush; five sons, Ronnie Castle and Hershel Castle Jr., both of Lowmansville; Curtis Castle of Waynesville, Ohio; and David Castle of Louisville; one sister, Oakie Burton of Flat Gap. Also surviving are 23 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Monday at Georges Creek United Baptist Church. Officiating the service was Bros. He was self-employed and a U.S. Army Veteran. Surviving are his wife, Sherri Music Coleman of Paintsville; two daughters, Andrea Lea and Samantha Lynn, both of Paintsville; four brothers, Norman Charles, Jr. of Columbus, Ohio; Harold Gene, George Martin, and Paul David, all of Paintsville; five sisters, Janet Branham, Sue Ryan, and Ora Lee Reese, all of Columbus, Ohio; Mary E. Salyer of Hager Hill; and Linda Mahaffey of Carlisle, Ohio. A Masonic Service was conducted on Saturday, June 9, at the Jones-Preston Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral services were held Sunday, June 10, at the First United Methodist Church. Terry Reffett officiated the services. Burial followed in the Richmond Cemetery at Paintsville, where a military funeral service was alsoconducted.   PH

Surviving her death are one daughter, Anna Ruth Conley Brown of Tampa, Florida; and one brother, Harvey Tackett of Van Lear. Also surviving her death are two grandchildren and one great grandchild. Surviving are one daughter Emma LeMaster of Flat Gap; one brother Mitchell VanHoose of Urbana, Ohio; six sisters Virgie Picklesimer of Woodstock, Ohio; Edna and Irene Castle both of Urbana, Ohio; Margie Ward and Imogene Tackett both of Thealka; and Katherine Wilcox of Louisa. Also surviving are one grandchild and one great grandchild. Funeral services were held at the Jones-Preston Funeral Home Chapel. Officiating the service was Dick VanHoose. She was a medical office manager. Surviving her death are two daughters, Dana Harshbarger of Huntington, West Virginia and Amy Maynard of Winchester; two brothers, Tony Pouch of Detroit, Michigan and Johnny Pouch of Pontiac, Michigan; three sisters, Betty Schneider of Chesapeake, Ohio; Joyce Zimmey of Hamilton, Ohio; and Faye Hamilton of Sutton, West Virginia. She was survived by her companion, Charles Collier of Beauty; one daughter Murline Lena Alley of Beauty; three brothers Kennis Lyons of Beauty; Roscoe Lyons of Lovely; and Roy Lyons of Kermit, West Virginia; two sisters, Margie Smith of Beauty; and Hilda Hoosier of Columbus, Ohio. Also surviving is one grandchild. Funeral services were held Monday, June 23, at the Phelps and Son Funeral Home. Officiating the service was James Maynard. Surviving her death are two sons, Eldon Ray Gullett of Ann Arbor, Michigan; and Nelson Clay Gullett of Salyersville; one daughter, Barbara Hall of Paintsville; and two sisters, Lillie Hensley of Salyersville; and Alma Adams of Paintsville. Also surviving are 8 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great- grandchildren. Funeral services were held at the Magoffin County Funeral Home Chapel, Wednesday, June 6. Burial followed at the Howes-Gullett Cemetery, at Lick Creek.   PH

Surviving are his wife, Thelma Hall of Paintsville; two sons, Herman Hall of Hanson; and Kendall Hall of Versailles; one daughter, Gidget Hall of Ironton, Ohio; three brothers, Maurice Hall of Morehead; Tony Hall of Michigan; and Randall Hall of Topmost; two sisters, Peggy Allen of Wayne, Michigan; and Pam Justice of Martin. Also surviving are eight grandchildren. Funeral services were held Sunday, June 10, at the Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home Chapel. Officiating were the Reynolds Fork Old Regular Baptist Ministers. A military funeral was conducted by DAV Chapter 128 of Garrett. Burial followed in the Joe Hall Cemetery at Topmost.   PH

Mr. Hitchcock was born February 29, 1912, in Johnson County to the late George W. and Mary Elizabeth Blanton Hitchcock. He was also preceded in death by his wife Grace Dunlap Hitchcock. Surviving his death are two daughters, Linda Mahan of Barnetts Breek; and Madge Blair of Waverly, Ohio; one son, Cecil Hitchcock of Staffordsville; also surviving are six grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren and four great great grandchildren. Mrs. Johnson was preceded in death by her husband, Ivan Johnson; one daughter, Diana Lynn Johnson; two brothers, Leo Colvin and Richard “Pete” Colvin; and one grandson, Mark Allen Johnson. Surviving her death are one son, Barry Keith Johnson of Mt. Sterling; two daughters, Nancy Kaye Hatfield of Mt. Sterling; and Sherri Lee Henry of Hager Hill; two sisters, Kathleen Colvin and Bonnie Colvin, both of Columbus, Ohio; one brother, Tom Colvin of Leander; ten step grandchildren, three great grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren. Funeral services were held Wednesday, June 13, at the Jones-Preston Funeral Home Chapel. Richard Williams and Herb Arms officiated the services. Funeral services will be held Thursay, June 21, for Phyllis A. Lindzy, 54, who died Monday, June 18, 2001. Mrs. Lindzy was born December 26, 1946, in Paintsville to Elzie and Eva Mae Collins Branham. She was a 1965 graduate of Northfield High School. She worked at Memcor in Huntington, West Virginia. She was also a homemaker, and involved in the Geneology Society in Wabash, Indiana. Also surviving are her husband Michael D. Lindzy Sr.; one son, Michael D. Lindzy Jr. of Largo, Indiana; two borthers, Walter Branaham and William Branham both of Largo, Indiana; and one sister, Norman (Rita) Rogers of Urbana, Indiana. Funeral Services will be held tomorrow, Thursday, 10 a.m. at McDonald Funeral Home Eddingfield chapel. Officiating the service will be Rev. Bill Bowling. Burial will follow at the Hopewell Cemetery at Largo, Indiana.   PH

Willis Litton, 62, died Friday, June 15, 2001, at the Lake Charles Memorial Hospital, Lake Charles, Louisiana. Mr. Litton was born July 3, 1938, in Martin County, to the late William and Georgie Litton. Also preceding him in death are several brothers and sisters. Surviving are his wife Allene Litton of Lancaster, Ohio; three sons, William Litton of Logan, Ohio; Larry Litton and James Litton both of Lancaster, Ohio; five daughters, Sharon White of Millersport, Ohio; Charlene Snider, Janet Paugh, Willidean Westbarger, and Debbie Davis, all of Lancaster, Ohio; three brothers, William Litton of Louisiana; Don Litton and Howard Litton of Kentucky; four sisters, Phyllis Burchett, Bernice Kestner and Lynn O’Brian, all of Kentucky; and Loretta Webb of Tennessee. Funeral services were held at the Sheridan Funeral Home in Lancaster, Ohio. Officiating the service was Pastor Roy Maple. Burial followed at the Maple Grove Cemetery.   PH

Funeral services were held Sunday, July 1, for Dimple Ruth McCarty, 54, who died Thursday, June 28, 2001. Mrs. McCarty was born September 3, 1946, in Van Lear, to the late William and Josie Caudill Austin. She was also preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters. She was a member of the Pentecostal Temple of Faith, in London. Surviving are her husband, Edward McCarty; two sons, Glenn Edward McCarty and Billy Ray McCarty, all of London; three sisters, Frances Morgan of Columbus, Ohio; Dosha Clemons of Paintsville; and Judy Jenkins of Thealka; three brothers, Ray Austin, Paul Austin and James Austin, all of Paintsville. Also surviving her death are several nieces and nephews. The funeral service was held at the Eberle Funeral Home in London. Officiating the service was Pastor Steven Gilkerson. Burial followed at the Deercreek Township Cemetery.   PH

Paris McCarty, 73, died Saturday, June 23, 2001, at Our Lady of the Way in Martin. Mr. McCarty was born July 23, 1927, in Johnson County, to the late Paris and Elviria McKenzie. Surviving are his wife Loretta Smith McCarty; three sons Paris McCarty III of Thelma; James McCarty of Georgetown; and Charles McCarty of Texas; two daughters Donna Kay Isley of Columbus, Ohio; and Crystal Ann Daniels of Boonescamp; and one sister Mary Howard of Marysville, Ohio. Also surviving his death are four grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Funeral Services were held Tuesday, June 26, at the Phelps and Son Funeral Home. Officiating the service was Roger Thornsbury and Ted Dawson. Burial Followed at the McCarty Cemetery at Thelma.   PH

John H. Oliver, 80, of Detroit, Mich., died Tuesday Jun.05 2001 in Garden City Hospital in Michigan. Mr. Oliver was born May 20, 1921, in Alabama, a son of the late Robert Henry and Zilla Halford Oliver. He was a former welder. Surviving are his wife, Flora Stapleton Oliver; a daughter, Charlene Culp of Urbanna, Ohio; three sons, James Oliver, Larry Oliver, and John E. Oliver, all of Springfield, Ohio; three sisters, Anna Garrett of Montgomery, Ala., Frances Darby of Loxley, Ala., and Lucy Dortch of Jackson, Ala.; six grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Paintsville Funeral Home by Elder Kenny Pelphrey. Burial will be in Dixon Cemetery in Staffordsville.

George Pendleton, 52, of West Liberty, died Monday Jun.18 2001 in St. Claire Medical Center in Morehead. Mr. Pendleton was born Aug. 18, 1948, in Paintsville, a son of the late Bill and Nancy Smith Pendleton. Surviving are two daughters, Georganna Pendleton and Angela Pendleton, both of West Liberty; a son, Scott Hill of Staffordsville; a sister, Margaret Daniel of Paintsville; and two grandchildren. The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Potter Funeral Home in West Liberty. Burial will be in Smith Cemetery in West Liberty.

Also preceding her in death are two husbands, Harmon Edward Salyer, 1974; and Thomas Sammons, 1987; and one daughter, Barbara Sue Music. Surviving are two sons, Eddie Dean Salyer of Romeo, Michigan; and Michael Dewayne Salyer of Paintsville; five daughters, Maxie Carolyn McDavid, Sharon Kay Witten, Sandra Lynn Keeton, Sherry Ann Poindexter and Faith Lee Salyer, all of Paintsville; one brother, Charles Issac LeMaster of Hager Hill; and three sisters, Nancy Lee Witten of Detroit, Michigan; Patsy Merle Clay of Lagro, Indiana; and Fay Taylor May of Paintsville. Also surviving are 29 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren and 1 grea- greatt grandchild. Serivces were held Sunday, July 1, at the Jones-Preston Funeral Home Chapel. Officiating the service was Robert McDavid and Dick VanHoose. Burial followed at the Old Hannah Family Cemetery, Hager Hill.   PH

Mr. Setser was born February 20, 1934, to John and Callie Setser at Daniels Creek. He was also preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Birdine Setser and Virginia Dawson; one brother, John Setser, Jr. of Findlay, Ohio. Survivng are one son, Mark Setser of Paintsville; one brother, Ellis Setser of Ontario, Canada; three sisters, Audrey Huff, Ruth Cregar, and Lottie Thomas, all of Dayton, Ohio. Burial was in the National Veterans Cemetery in Phoenix, Arizona.   PH

Hatchett, both of Michigan; one daughter, Cheryl Williams of Kentucky; two brothers, Arville Short of Kentucky; and Ray Short of Ohio; three sisters, Hester Daniels, and Burlitta Daniels both of Kentucky; and Loretta Gillespie of Ohio; also surviving are nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held yesterday, June 19, at the Stone Funeral Home. Officiating the service was Rev. Tom Rellinger of Petoskey Church of Christ. Amanda Staniford, 86, of Paintsville, died Friday Jun.01 2001 at her home. Mrs. Staniford was born May 23, 1915, in Johnson County, a daughter of the late W.T. and Polly Music Mollette. She was a member of Kerz Enterprise Baptist Church. Surviving are three sons, Mike Staniford Jr. of Staffordsville and Thomas Staniford and Ronnie Staniford, both of Paintsville; two daughters, Helen Music of Nippa and Carolyn Meade of Columbus, Ohio; 16 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Sunday at Kerz Enterprise Baptist Church by Lindsey Meade and Gilbert Music. Burial will be in Meade family cemetery in Flat Gap. Friends may call until 9 tonight at the Preston Funeral Home in Paintsville.

Jesse Stapleton, 79, died Tuesday, June 26, 2001, at Cabell Huntington Hospital, Huntington, West Virginia. Mr. Stapleton was born September 9, 1921, in Paintsville, to the late Ashland Stapleton and Virgie McKenzie. He was also a veteran of World War II. Surviving his death are his wife, Gertrude Stapleton; one son, Robert T. Stapleton of Huntington, West Virginia; three daughters, Lorna Bowen of Dallas, Texas; Karen Duncan and Sherry Hursman both of Huntington, West Virginia; and two sisters, Leecie Stapleton and Julia Ann Maynard of Hager Hill. Also surviving his death are six grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, two step-grandchildren and five step-great grandchildren. The funeral service will be held Saturday, June 30, 10 a.m. at the Stapleton Cemetery, at Hager Hill. Burial will follow after the service.   PH

Bernita Wells of Germany; Anita Wells of Calvert City; one brother Nevard Wells of Van Lear; and three sisters Emma Adkins and Polly Collins of Van Lear; and Mary Watton of Ashland. Also surviving his death are eight grandchildren. Funeral services will be held today, Friday, at the Old Log Church, 10 a.m. Officiating the service will be Ted Dawson. She was an Army Veteran and former assemblyline worker in Pennsylvania. Surviving her death are two brothers, Carl Thomas Wilcox of East Point; and Vernon Wilcox of Alger, Ohio; and one sister Lorena Guyton of Ada, Ohio. Visitation will be held today, Friday, after 10 a.m., and until time of services Saturday, at noon. Funeral services will be held at the Floyd Funeral Home Chapel. Also surviving her death are 52 grandchildren, 94 great- grandchildren, 16 great-great-grandchildren and three great-great-great-grandchildren. Visitation will be held Friday and funeral services will be held at the Phelps and Son Funeral Home. Officiating the service will be Tim McCoy and Prentice Meade.
