Rose Baker, age 79, of Lancaster, Ohio, died at Crestview Nuring Home. She was born April 12, 1917 in Johnson County, Kentucky, the daughter of James Marion and Bessie Fyffe. She is proceded in death by both her parents. She is survived by three daughters, Caril Lee of Goodrich, Texas, Dianna LeBarron of Goodrich, Texas, and Joyce Lemaster of Lancaster, Ohio; two sons, David Barker of Columbus, Ohio, and Phillip Barker of Hillard, Ohio; six sisters, Lucie Slone of Flat Gap, Nola Redmond of Hillard, Ohio, Angie Cantrell of North Carolina, Pauline Wheeler of Blaine, Addie Robinett of Hannibal, Missouri, and Irene Sergi of London, Ohio; 13 grandchildren,15 great grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren. Services were held Thursday, March 6, at Fyffe Cemetery with Rev. Paul V. Preston Officiating. Burial was in Fyffe Cemetery at Flat Gap, Ky. PAINTSVILLE HERALD 3-12-1997

BAYS, Bruce
1921-1997
Bruce Bays, age 71, of Webbville, died Saturday, March 1, 1997, at Paintsville. He was born February 21, 1921, in Webbville, the son of Charles Younger Bays and Ilah Sturgil Bays. He is preceded in death by both his parents. He is survived by his wife Ethel Young Bays, four daughters, Mrs. Bernard (VIvian) Swann of Bowie, MD., Mrs. Robert (Velsie) Hewlett of Louisa, Mrs. Royce (Virginia) Daw of Virginia Beach, Va., and Mrs. Charles (Velda Frances) Daniel of Paintsville, one sister; Anna Lois Bays of Webbville, two brothers; Charles Hubert Bays of Webbville and Willie Bays of Grayson and seven grandchildren. Services were Tuesday, February 25, at 10:30 a.m. at the Wilson Funeral Home with Bro. Royce Daw and Bro. Douglas Thorpe officiating. Burial was in the Bays Cemetery at Webbville. BAYES,  Woodrow
1919-1997
Woodrow Bayes , 78, of West Eighth Street, died at 8:35 p.m. Sunday, March 23, 1997, at his residence, following an extended illness. He was born January 23, 1919, in Paintsville, KY., to the late Leander Bayes and Dorrie Estep Bayes. He was married July 18, 1980 to Shirley Blankenship, who survives. Also surviving are children by a previous marriage to Marie Ratliff Bayes, Loretta and husband David Bost, Rose Ann and her husband, Fred Rice and Joanne and her husband Charlie Downs, all of Chillicothe, James and his wife Judy Bayes and Charles and his wife Kimberly Bayes, all of Chillicothe, Larry and his wife Pamela Bayes of Kingston; step- children Pamela and husband Terry Corcoran, Amy and husband, Randy Thomas, all of Chillicothe, Lora Curtis of Waverly, Ray and wife Janice Smith, Robert Current, all of Chillicothe and Danny Hughes at home; sisters Venus Jones of Salyersville, KY., Thelma Hughes of Ashland, KY., and Neva Rice of Raceland, KY.; and numerous grand, great-grandchildren, and step grand and great- grandchildren., nieces, and nephews. He was preceeded in death by a son, Woodrow Allen Bayes, and nine brothers. Mr. Bayes retired in 1982 from the Mead Corp., where he had worked for 37 years. He was a member of U.P.I.U. Local 731. Funeral services will be held at the Ware Funeral Home with the Rev. Mike Blankenship officiating. Burial will follow in the Greenlawn Cemetery.


BEAM, Sophia (Akers)
1918-1997
Sophia Akers Beam, age 80, died Monday, March 3, 1997 at Paintsvilie Mountain Manor Nursing Home. She was born May 22 1916, in Johnson County, the daughter of Millard Akers and Myrtle Preston Akers. She is preceded in death both parents. She is survived by one daughter, Mavire Blair of Sitka, and one sister, Melisie Vanhoose of Paintsville. Services were Wednesday March 5, at the Jones Preston Funeral Home with Dick Vanhoose officiating. Burial was in Highland Memorial Park at Staffordsville.


BURCHETT, Lucy (Williams)
1908-1997
Jones-Preston Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements for Lucy Burchett, 89, who died Sunday, March 23, 1997 at Paintsville Mountain Manor Nursing Home. Mrs. Burchett was born February 19, 1908; in Johnson County, to the late Frank and Stella VanHoose Williams. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Garfield "Red" Burchett, on November 24, 1956. Surviving are four sons, Junior Burchett, of Staffordsville; Jerry Burchett Of Lowmansville, Huey Lee Burchett of Springville; Tennessee; and Noah Burchett of Okeechobee, Florida; three daughters, Mary F Deitz, of Paintsville, Janetta L. Murphy of Van Lear and Neldra Sue Frazier of Knoxville, Tennessee; one brother, Richard Williams of Troy, Ohio; five sisters, Clara Rice of Flatwoods, Alta Shields of Fairborn, Ohio, Geneva Rice of Michigan, Frankie Patrick, of Troy, Ohio, and Carrol Lacy of Shelton, Washington; and 27 grandchildren, 37 great- grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held today, Wednesday, March 26, at 12 noon at Tom's Creek Freewill Baptist Church with Kelly Caudill and Dick VanHoose officiating. Burial will be Highland Memorial Park at Staffordsville.


CANTRELL, Gladia (Taylor)
1911-1997
Gladia Cantrell, 85, died Monday Mar.31,1997 at Paul B. Hall Regional Medical Center, Piantsville, Johnson Co Ky. Mrs. Cantrell was born April 22, 1911, in Johnson County, to the late David and Mary Daniel Taylor. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Earl Cantrell in 1967. Surviving are two sons, Joe, Cantrell of Lexington and Gary Cantrell of Port St. Lucie, Florida; one daughter, Judy Salyers of Staffordsville; one sister ter, Marie Rice of West Van Lear, and two grandchildren, one great-grandchild and one great great-grandchild. Funeral services will be held today, Wednesday, April 2, at 11 a.m. at, Jones-Preston  Funeral Home Chapel with Jerry McKenzie officiating. Burial will be in Johnson County Memorial Cemetery at Staffordsville.


CANTRELL, Sarah (Rowland)

Paintsville Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements for Sarah Magdalene Cantrell, 75, who died Tuesday, Mar.18 1997 Mrs. Cantrell was born February 9, 1922, in Paintsville, to the late Armstrong Rowland and Lula "Pennington" Pennington. She was a waitress. Surviving are her first husband, Mitchell Cantrell; one son, William Kenneth Cantrell of Paintsville; three sisters, Margaret Rowland of Paintsville, Bertle Melvin of Wabash, Indiana, and Billie Azelton of Clio, Michigan; and two brothers, William Rowland of Ohio and Creval Rowland of East Point. Funeral services were held Friday, March 21, at Paintsville Funeral Home Chapel, with Elders Charles Price and Jerry Smith. officiating. Burial was in Johnson County Memorial Cemetery at Staffordsville, Johnson Co Ky.


CASTLE, Alkia (Trimble)
1908-1997
Alkia Trimble Castle, 88, died Saturday, March 22, 1997, at Highlands Regional Medical Center. Mrs. Castle was born December 8 1908, to the late Albert Trimble and Naomi Tackett. She was also preceded in death by her husband, John Thurman Castle; and two sons, Thomas and Robert Earl Castle. Surviving are four sons, Ernest Castle of Levelland, Texas; Willis Castle of Red Bush, William Castle of, Hendersonville, Tennessee, and Charles Mickey Phipps of North Carolina; two daughters, Rebecca Fyffe of Fairborn, Ohio, and Judy Ferguson of Red Bush; one brother, James Trimble of Finlay, Ohio; one sister, Beulah Baldwin of Mechanicsburg, Ohio; and 31 grandchildren, two step-grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Tuesday, March 25, at Peaceful Valley Church at Cantrells Creek, with John Howard and Paul E. Keaton officiating. Rev. Irvin Castle, age 81, of Paintsville, died Thursday, March 13, 1997, at Hall Medical Center. He was born October 28, 1915 the son of Proctor and Pauline Sparks Castle. He is preceded in death by both parents. He is survived by his wife, Opal Price Castle; two sons, Dr. James Roger Castle of Paintsville and Michael Castle of Staffordsville, one daughter, Sharon Castle of Staffordsville; one brother, Johnie Castle of Paintsville; and 3 grandchildren. Services were Sunday, March 16, at Baker Branch Freewill Baptist Church of Paintsville with Rev.Venny VanHoose officiating. Burial was in Lakeview Memorial Cemetery, Staffordsville.


CAUDILL, Winston Lionell

Winston Lionell Caudill,  68 died Friday, March 7, at Paul B.Hall Regional Medical Center.  Mr. Caudill was born December 4, 1928, in Johnson County, to the late Johnny and Ethel Travis Caudill. He was a sales-man/partner with Carter-Carter-Sadler of Pikeville, veteran of the Korean War and member of Tom's Creek Freewill Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife, Myrtle T.Patrick Caudill. Funeral services were held Monday, March 10, at Jones-Preston Funeral Home Chapel, with Dan Patrick and Brent Patrick officiating. Burial was in Highland Memorial Park at Staffordsville,  Johnson Co Ky.


CROTHERS, Colleen (Price)
1915-1997
Paintsville resident Colleen Price Crothers, 81, died Saturday, March 1, 1997 at Highlands Regional Medical Center. Mrs. Crothers was born March 25, 1915, to the late Clarence G. and Mary Hall Price. She was an LPN for forty years, working at the Paintsville Clinic, Prestonsburg General Hospital and Highlands Regional Medical Center. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Thomas N. Crothers, in 1974; one son, David Lee Crothers; and one daughter, Lenore Crothers Eldridge. Surviving are two sons, William "Bill" and Mike Crothers, both of Paintsville; one daughter, Mary E. Hewlett of Paintsville; one brother, Cleaburn Price of West Van Lear; and 11 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Monday, March 3, at the First Baptist Church of Paintsville, with Drew Martin ofciating. Burial was in Highland Memorial Park at Staffordsville, with Jones-Preston Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.


DANIELS, Harmon
1997
Harmon Daniels, 72, of Circleville, Ohio died March 24, 1997 at Berger Hospital. He was retired from transportation division, State of Ohio and was an Army veteran of WW II. He is survived by sons, Mark and Jerry Daniels of Columbus, Charles Daniels of Grove City. Funeral services were at the WELLMAN FUNERAL HOME, Circleville, Oh. Burial was in Sitka, Ky.


DANIELS, Shirley (Mast)
1937-1997
East Point resident Shirley Daniels, 60, died Tuesday, March 4, 1997 at her residence. Mrs. Daniels was born January 11,1937, in Elizabethtown, Tennessee, to the late Dale and Ruth Conley Mast. She was a nurse. Surviving are her husband, Delmer Lee Daniels of East Point; one son, Dale Daniels of East Point; three daughters, Geneva Myers of Staffordsville, Robin Wilson of East Point; Donna Daniels of Paintsville; one brother, Donald Mast of Happy Camp, Colorado; one sister, Janelle Charlton of Sacramento, California; and 11 grand-children. Funeral services were held Friday, March 7, at Jones Preston Funeral Home Chapel, with Dallas Patrick officiating. Burial was in Daniels-Sparks Cemetery at Chandlersville. Retired miner Walker Fairchild, 81, died Wednesday, March 19, 1997 at his Staffordsville residence. Mr. Fairchild was born October 1, 1915, in Johnson County, to the late Roy and Mint Ratliff Fairchild. He was also preceded in death by one son, Rick Fairchild. Surviving are his wife, Loretta Blair Fairchild; four sons, Jerry, and Kenny, both of Staffordsviile, Gerald of Auxier and Bobby of Ohio; three daughters, Barbara Jean Ward, Sharon Tackett and Sandra King, all of Staffordsville; one sister, Edda Goble of Paintsville; one half sister, Virginia Nelson of Prestonsburg; and 38 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Friday, March 21, at Jones-Preston Funeral Home Chapel, with Kenny Pelphrey officiating. Burial was in Fairchild Family Cemetery at Staffordsville.

Henrietta Green, 61, of Thelma, died March 21 1997 at U.K. Medical Center in Lexington, Ky. Mrs. Green was born January 30, 1936, in Middletown, Ohio, to the late Henry and Vinia Norman. Surviving are her husband, Tarncey Green; three sons, Timothy and Lester Green, both of Thelma, and Virgil Wilson of Hollywood, Florida; two daughters, Amy Lyons of Thelma and Karen Wilson of Alabama; one brother, Homer Clay Norman of Germantown, Ohio; one half brother, Edward Madden of Middletown; two sisters, Faye Davis of Knoxville, Tennessee, and Naomi Owlsey of Miamisburg, Ohio; and 11 grandchildren and four greatgrandchildren. Funeral services were held Monday, March 24, at Paintsville Funeral Home Chapel, with Revs. Tobe Wheeler and Ronnie Spriggs officiating. Burial was in Highland Memorial Park at Staffordsville.


GRIFFITH, Otis

Funeral services were held Saturday, March 8, for Otis Griffith, 66, who died Wednesday, March 5, 1997, at his residence. Mr. Griffith was born March  7,1930, in Floyd County, to the late Linzie and Mary Effie Salyers Griffith. He was retired from Pike Electric Company, and a member of Auxier Freewill Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife, Margaret Powers Griffith; one son, Hershel Griffith of Garden City, Michigan; two daughters;  Connie Frasure of Auxier and Rita Collins of Van Lear; two brothers; Elmer Griffith of Somerset and L.J. Griffith of Florida; four sisters, Ellen Marsillett of Prestonsburg, Martha Duty of East Point, Ruby Powers of Auxier and Nancy Estep of Grayson; and seven grandchildren. Officiating at services at Auxier Freewill Baptist Church were Bobbie Joe Spencer, Southie Fannin Jr. and David Powers. Burial was in Government Relocation Cemetery at Auxier. Wonnie Phipps Hensley, 94, died Wednesday, March 26, 1997 at Mountain Manor Nursing Home. Mrs. Hensley was born March 12,1903, in Magoffin County, to the late Bruce and Mary Ellen Montgomery Phipps. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Willie Hensley, in 1967. Surviving are two sons, Ed Hensley of Thealka and William Hensley of Staffordsville; two daughters, Lymon Daniel and Sarah Mollett, both of Paintsville; one sister, Clara Howard of Piketon, Ohio; and 15 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and three great-greatgrandchildren. Funeral services were held Friday, March 28, at Jones Preston Funeral Home Chapel, with Jerry Castle officiating. Burial was in Highland Memorial Park at Staffordsville.


HORNE, Mary  (Sammons)

Mary S. Horne, 84, of Wittensville, died Sunday, March 2, 1997 in Paul. B. Hall Regional Medical Center. Mrs. Horne was born March 15, 1912, in Johnson County, to the late James and Katherine Honeycutt Sammons. She was a retired nurse from the Paintsville Hospital and a member of the Baptist Church. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Willard Richard Horne, in 1981. Surviving are one son, Arbin Willard "Sonny" Horne of Fairbom, Ohio; one daughter, Barbara Hamilton of Wittensville; one sister, Nora Baldridge of Sitka; and five grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, three step-grandchildren and seven step-great- grandchildren. Funeral services were held Wednesday, March 5, at Preston Funeral Home Chapel, with Carl Baldridge and Harry Neal Frisby officiating. Burial was in Old Friendship Memorial Gardens at Williamsport. Charity Nicole Hughes, 19, died Tuesday, March 18, 1997 in Madison County, Alabama. Ms. Hughes was born January 19, 1978, in Pike County, to James Dennis and Peggy Daniels Hughes. Graveside services were held Saturday, March 22, at the family cemetery at Thealka, with James Kelly Caudill officiating. Jones-Preston Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Howard Hughes, 76, died March 26, 1997 at Paul B. Hall Regional Medical Center. Mr.Hughes was born July 8, 1920, at Thealka, to the late William and Maude Preston Hughes. He was a fire marshall and electrical inspector and a veteran of World War II. Surviving are his wife, Edna Hughes; two brothers, Richard and Norman Hughes, both of Springhill, Florida; one sister, Ruth Kozlik of Willowick, Ohio; and several nephews. and nieces. Funeral services were held Saturday, March 29, at Paintsville Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Drew Martin officiating. Burial was in Johnson County Memorial Cemetery at Staffordsville. Retired miner Troy Lee Johnson, 83, died March 24, 1997 at Highlands Regional Medical Center. Mr. Johnson was born March 12, 1914, to the late Mander and Cordilla Johnson. He was also preceded in death by a son, Roger Johnson. Surviving are his wife, Ruth Johnson; four sons, Rev. Arnold Belmont Johnson of Virgie, Gary Randall Johnson of Pikeville, Michael Ray Johnson of Shelby Valley and Rickey Johnson of Hit Hat; five daughters, Barbara Sue Sparks of Neon, Brenda Burke of Virgie, Jean Mullins and Shirley Smallwood, both of Dorton, and Mary Smallwood of Myra; one stepson, Robert Charles Pigg of Thealka; two stepdaughters, Michelle Justice and Melinda Pigg, both of Thealka; one sister, Ada Johnson of Neon; and several grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and six step- grandchildren. Funeral services were held Thursday, March 27, at Boldman Freewill Baptist Church, with Revs. James Elkins, James Howard, Louis Ferrari and James Hosbon officiating. Raymond King, 97, died March 22 1997, at Paul B. Hall Regional Medical Center. Mr. King was born May 4, 1899, in Paintsville, to the late Samuel Porter and Cynthia Fitch King.  He was a miner. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Grethel King. Surviving are one son, Tom R. King of Paintsville; two daughters, Thelma White of Paintsville and Phyllis Miller of Relsterstown, Maryland; one brother, Clarence King of Burnside; and five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Monday, March 24 at First Baptist Church, with Revs. Drew Martin and Franklin Miller officiating. Burial was in King Cemetery at Paintsville, with Paintsville Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Honorary pallbearers were James H. Conley, Escom Chandler, Frelan Bradbury, Otto Pratt, Joe R. Conley, Tubby Harris, Morris Conley, Sherman Rice and George Newsome.


MAY, Kathryn (Newsom)
1923 - 1997
Kathryn Newsom May, died Friday, March 28 1997, at UK Medical Center in Lexington. Mrs. May was born December 11, 1923, in Johnson County, to the late Jarvey and Nancy Jane Engle Newsom.  She was a member of the First United Methodist Church. She was also preceeded into death by her husband, Howard May  in 1985. Surviving are two sons, Charles May of Garden Grove, California and Don May of Morehead; two daughters, Linda Sparks of Hager Hill, and Nancy May of Paintsville; two brothers, George Newsom of Paintsville and Noah Newsom of Grayson, and 11 grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Funeral services were held Monday, March 31 1997, at Jones-Preston Funeral Home Chapel, with John P. Salyers officiating. Burial was in the family cemetery at Hager Hill. Wittensville resident Rhoda Mullett, 86, died Sunday, March 30, 1997, at Paul B. Hall Regional Medical Center. Mrs. Mullett was born March 26, 1911, at Myrtle, to the late Harvey and Mollie Hall Holbrook. She was a member of the First Church of God in Paintsville. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Roy B. Mullett; three sons, Ralph, Douglas, and Utah Carter Mullett; and one daughter, Pauline Prater. Surviving are three sons Milton Prater of Vallonia, Indiana and Floyd and Austin Prater, both of Franklin, Indiana; six daughters, Betty Baker and Virginia Wood, both of New Castle, Indiana, Phyllis Blevins of Wittensville, Thelma Miller of Paintsville and Wanda York and Kathy Howell, both of Prestonsburg; one brother, Steve Ben Holbrook of Kenton, Ohio; and a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was born March 7, 1997, he was the son of Danny and Geanie Castle. He is preceded in death by her husband, Thomas N. Crothers, one son; David Lee Crothers, one, daughter; Lenore Crother Eldridge, and both parents. He is survived by his maternal grandparents, Robert and Lena Castle formally of Thealka, and Paternal grand parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Penn Necessary. Jones Preston Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements for Ida Mae Bentley Newsom, 76, who died Thursday, March 27, 1997 at Highlands Regional Medical Center. Mrs. Newsom was born June 14,1920, in Floyd County, to the late Alex and Elizabeth Ratliff Bentley. She was a former employee of Glen L. Martin Airplane Manufacturers. Surviving are her husband, George Newsom; and one daughter and son-in-law, Sandra Kay Newsom and -Burton Rudolph, M.D., of Knoxville, Tennessee. Funeral services were held Thursday, March 20, for Helen Marie Patton, 80, who died March 15 1997 at Raceland. Mrs. Patton was born July 30, 1916, in Johnson County, to the late James Arthur and Bessie Jane Medings Pack. She was a social worker. Surviving are her husband, Dexter Patton of Paintsville; three daughters, Maragert Ropers of Lexington, Marlene White of Raleigh, North Carolina, and Martha Mefford of Raceland; one brother, James Arthur Pack Jr., of Paintsville; two sisters, Lillian Arrowood and Mary Richmond, both of Paintsville; and nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Officiating at services at Paintsville Funeral Home Chapel were Rev. Drew Martin and Terry Browning. Burial was in Highland Memorial Park Staffordsville.

Red Bush resident Lois Salyer Pennington, 61, died Monday, March 17, 1997 at her residence. Mrs. Pennington was born August 15, 1935, in Johnson County, to the late Freeman and Pearlie Rowland Salyer. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Elmer, and Alger Salyer; and two sisters, Opal Williams and Christine Osterfield. Surviving are her husband, Ren Pennington; three sons, Greg Cantrell of Paintsville and Paul and Keith Cantrell, both of Flat Gap; two daughters, Linda Cantrell Holbrook of West Van Lear and Brenda Pennington Barnett of Red Bush; one sister, Dorothy Salyer Paylor of Cincinnati, Ohio; and six grandchildren. Funeral services were held Thursday, March 20, at Jones Preston Funeral Home Chapel, with Ellis Hamilton and Isaac Rowland officiating. Burial was in Salyer Family Cemetery at Red Bush.


PRESTON, Bessie (Tackett)
1935-1997
Former Johnson County resident Bessie Preston, 61, of Powell, Ohio, died Friday, March 28, 1997, at Grady Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Preston was born August 20, 1935, in Paintsville, to the late Benjamin and Julia Welters Tackett. Surviving are her husband, Farris; four sons, Charles of Powell, Bruce of Prospect, Ohio, Dennis of Radnor, Ohio, and Kris of Powell; two daughters, Jonie Cooper of Sunbury; Ohio, and Doris Kalinoski of Delaware, Ohio; two sisters, Frankie Hall of Fountain Run, Kentucky, and Brenda Shinnaberry of Marengo, Ohio; seven brothers, Jesse Tackett of Westerville, Ohio, Chris Tackett of Johnstown, Ohio, Paul Tackett of Powell, James Tackett of Paintsville, Tim Tackett of Kilbourne, Ohio, Kenneth Tackett of Los Angeles, California, and Phil Tackett of Powell; and 13 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Funeral services were held Monday, March 31, at Bennett Brown Funeral Home. Burial was in Kingwood Memorial Park. Weekly Progress 4-2-1997

Denver resident Henry Rice, 82, died Friday, March 28,1997 at his residence. Mr. Rice was born July 2,1914, in Johnson County, to the late Mose and Mattie Watkins Rice. He was a blacktop plant operator. He was also preceded in death by his, wife,  Mae Cantrell Rice. Surviving are one son, Larry Joe Rice of Lexington; one daughter, Stella V. Preston of Paintsville; two sisters, Martha Jean S;pradlin of Hager Hill and Mary Lou Caudill of Staffordsville; and five grandchildren. Funeral services were held Sunday, March 30, at Rockhouse Freewill Baptist Church, with Revs.  Richard Williams and Herbert Music officiating. Burial was in Mayo Memorial Cemetery at Paintsville, with Paintsville Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Weekly Progress 4-2-1997

Jay Rickman, age 75, of Thealka,  died Sunday, March 16, 1997, at Highlands Regional Medical Center. He was born April 28, 1921, in Hellier, Kentucky, the son of Joe and Gussie Rickman. He is preceded in death by both parents. He is survived by his wife, Edith Faye Daniel Rickman; two daughter, Danna Rickman of Offutt, and Tamara Watson of Acworth, Ga.; one sister, Bonnie Ward of Offut, . Ky; one brother, Paul Rickman of Dayton, Ohio; 2 grandchildren; 1 great-grandchild. Services were Wednesday, March 19, at 1:00 at Paintsville Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Bob Smith officiating. Kenneth Ray Bailey Smith, age 71, died Saturday, March 1, 1997 at Paul B. Hall Regional Medical Center. He was born April 30,1925, the son of John and Nancy Smith. He is preceded in death by both parents and seven sisters,Goldie, Rachel Estelle, Myrtle, Ruth, Ida Marie and Betty; William and Warnie. He is survived by his wife, Mary Elizabeth Arms Smith; two daughters, Pamela Burgess and Barbara Campbell; two sons, Mark, and Kennie Smith Jr. He is also survived by 2 daughters, Mary Alice Schoonover and Rose Lee Hettunger, and one son Billy Ray Smith from a previous marriage; 17-grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren; one Uncle James Coy Smith, and numerous neices and nephews. Service were held Tuesday, March 3, at 11:00 a.m. at Jones Preston Funeral Home with John Skaggs officiating, Burial was in the Highland Memorial Park, Staffordsville. Paintsville Herald 3-19-1997

Barbara J. Stambaugh, 61, of Springfield, Ohio, died March 4 1997 in Bristol House in Springfield. Mrs. Stambaugh was born Octtober 3, 1935, in Johnson County, to the late Charlie and Ollie (Castle) Castle. She was a former employee of Basco Leather Company and was a  member of East High Street Church of Christ where she served as a Sunday school teacher. Surviving are her husband; Francis P. Stambaugh; two daughters, Tamera Brookins of Springfield and Kimberly; Brown of Urbana, Ohio; and six grandchildren. Funeral services were held at Richards, Raff and Dunbar Memorial Home, with Evangelist Gerald Reynolds officiating. Burial was in Rose Hill Burials Park. Paintsville Herald Wednesday 5-7-1997

She was born February 20,1915, in Johnson County, the daughter of Gaylan Franklin and Bertha Goble. She is proceeded in death by both her parents. She is survived by her husband James Stapleton of Louisa; one son, Lester Blevins; and 7 grandchildren. Former Johnson County resident Allie Ward, 59, died March 17 1997 at Champaign Nursing Home in Urbana, Ohio. Mrs. Ward was born November 13,1937, in Johnson County, to the late Harvey and Vertrice Salyer. Surviving are her husband, James M. Ward; three sons, Jim A. Ward of Pikeville; Jackie Ward of Hanover, Michigan; and Chris Ward of Jackson, Michigan; three daughters, Judy Magda of Jonesville, Michigan; Julia Ward of Horton, Michigan; and Patricia Fann of Jackson, Michigan; four brothers, Burlin and Shafter Salyer, both of Staffordsville; and Prentice and Harvey Salyer Jr. both of Bellefontaine, Ohio; two sisters, Loretta Poe of Oil Springs and Julia Ratliff of Urbana, Ohio; and 11 grandchildren. Funeral services were held Thursday, March 20, at Paintsville Funeral Chapel, with Elders James: Spradlin and James R. Blair officiating. Burial was in Perkins Cemetery at Riceville.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, April 3,1997 for Paul Well 51, who died Monday, March 3l 1997 at his Van Lear residence. Mr. Wells was born December 04,1945, in Johnson County, to the late Arthur and Jenny Ward Wells.He was retired from American Standard, U.S. Army Veteran and member of the East Point Church of Christ. Surviving are his wife, Vicki Handy Wells; one son, Paul Thomas Wells of Van Lear; one daughter, Tracy Wells of Van Lear; two brothers, Charles Wells of Prestonsburg and Jerry Wells of Thornville, Ohio; two sisters, Francis Honaker of Bowling Green and Carol Davis; of Van Lear; and two grandchildren. Officiating at 11 a.m. services at Jones-Preston Funeral Home Chapel will be Dave Flanery and ______ Hughes. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery at Staffordsville. Weekly Progress 4-2-1997
