ADAMS, Dorothy (Crace)
1910-1997
Dorothy Crace Adams, 87, of Paintsville, died Monday, November 10, 1997, at Paul B. Hall Medical Center. She was born January 10, 1910, Johnson County, the daughter of Winfield Spradlin and Mary Jane Selvage. She was preceded in death by her parents and her first husband, Crossford Crace, and her second husband, Dewey Adams. She is survived by Leroy Crace of Hager Hill; four daughters, Beatrice Barker of Van Lear; Mary Carroll of Columbus, Ohio; Diane Cannon of Ironton, Ohio; and Lynn Allen of Columbus, Ohio, two sisters, Daisy Shields of Lexington, Indiana; and Josephine Horne of Paintsville; 24 grandchildren and 39 great-grandchildren. Services were November 12 at Jones-Preston Funeral Home Chapel with Eddie Young officiating.  Burial was the Rice Family Cemetery at Barnetts Creek.

ADAMS, June (Wells)
1916-1997
June (Wells) Adams, 81, of Prestonsburg and widow of Frank Adams, Sr., died Wednesday, November 12, 1997, at the Riverview Manor Nursing Home. She was born January 28, 1916, at Van Lear, to the late Elijah and Effie (Burchett) Wells. She was a retired dietician with Mountain Manor Nursing Home of Prestonsburg and member of the First Christian Church of Prestonsburg. She is survived by two sons, Frank Adams and Ronald Adams, both of Prestonsburg; one daughter, Virginia Campbell of Prestonsburg; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held November 14, at the Floyd Funeral Home Chapel with the Evangelist Kevin Jett officiating. Burial followed in the Richmond Cemetery in Prestonsburg. ARROWOOD, Etta (McKenzie)
1902-1997
Etta Arrowood, 95, of Meally, died Tuesday, November 4, 1997, at Mountain Manor Nursing Home. She was born June 14, 1902, in Greenup County, the daughter of Marion and Elizabeth McKenzie. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, George Melvin Arrowood. She is survived by four sons, Walter Arrowood and Douglas Arrowood, both of Meally; Lawrence Arrowood of Westwood and Clarence Arrowood of Wurtland; three daughters, Naomi Hager of Paintsville; Mary Preston of Grayson; and Elsie Ward of Wurtland; 19 grandchildren, 29 great- grandchildren and 11 great-great grandchildren. Services were Novemeber 6 at Buffalo United Baptist Church with Claude Mollett, W.L. Watlers, and Bobby Mollett officiating. Burial was in the Arrowood Cemetery in Meally. BRYANT, Nolda (Borders)
1928-1997
Nolda Borders Bryant, 69, of Ulysses, died Saturday, November 1, 1997. She was born June 9, 1928, in Ulysses, the daughter of Roy Borders and Elta Edwards. She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Roy Jr. and Melvin Anderson Borders; and five sisters, Geneva McGraw, Emogene Powers, Anne Lou Borders, Frances Lemaster and Rebecca Borders. She is survived by her husband, Verlin Bryant of Ulysses; five daughters, Elta Jean Cordial and Carolyn Lemaster, both of Ulysses; Wanda Sue Gibson and Judy Oldham, both of Catlettsburg; and Ann Stone of Louisa; two sons, Verlin Bryant, Jr. of Louisa and Lee Roy Bryant of Ulysses; two sisters, Virginia Davis and Freda Brechet, both of Springfield, Ohio; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Services will be November 5 at the Walnut Grove Freewill Baptist Church with Reverend Jimmy Bevins and Reverend Francis Rice officiating. Burial will be in the Bryant Cemetery in Ulysses. BUSHEE, Pauline (Samons)
1997
Pauline Samons Parsons Bushee, formerly of Meally, died November 29,1997, in Tampa, Fla. She was preceded in death by her mother and father, Tom and Verna Samons; her first husband, Earl Parsons; and one son, Gary Parsons; and one brother, Raymond Samons; She is survived by her husband,  Lloyd Bushee; one daughter, Sandy Willis of Danville, Indiana; two sons, Greg Parson of Tampa, Fla., and Mike Parsons of Sari sofa, FU; a brother, Ivan Samons of Kalamazoo, Mich.; one sister, Betty Johnson of Buycrus, Ohio; and four grandchildren. Services were December 2, at Citris Park Church of Christ, with Mark Willis officiating. Burial was in the Garden of Memories in the Swilley Funeral Home in Tampa, Fla. Pauline was a 1943 graduate of Meade Memorial High School and Mayo Business School and was a member of the Meally Church of Christ.


CASSADY, Billy Ray
1935-1997
Billy Ray Cassady, 62, of Inez, died Wednesday, November 26, 1997, at the Ohio State University Medical Center. He was born in Inez, the son of the late Robert and Rachel Spears Cassady, on June 11,1935. Billy Ray was a member and star player on the 1954 Inez High School Kentucky State High School championship team and later played on the University of Kentucky's 1958 national championship, team, coached by Adolph Rupp. He was retired from the Wolf Creek Colleries Coal Co., following a kidney transplant. He was a member of the Inez Masonic Lodge, the Golden Memorial Methodist Church; and a member of the University of Kentucky Basketball Alumni. Survivors include his wife, Donna Sue Callaham Cassady; two sons, William M. Cassady and Carlos R. Cassady, both of Inez; and three grandsons. Funeral services were conducted Saturday, November 29, in Richmond-Callaham Funeral Home in Inez, with Rev. Eric Patterson officiating. Burial was in the Saltwell Cemetery in Inez.


CASTLE, Harold "Cotton"
1927-1997
Harold "Cotton" Castle, 70, of Nippa, died Tuesday, November 25, 1997, at Mountain Manor Nursing Home. He was born April 17, 1927, the son of Earl Castle and Mary VanHoose Castle. He was preceded in death by his parents and his daughter, Karen Castle Bowens. He is survived by three grandchildren, Glen Bowens, Mary Jo Walters and Tonia Adams; and, six greatgrandchildren. Graveside services were November 27 at Roy Meadows Cemetery in Nippa, with Dick VanHoose and Roger VanHoose officiating.


CASTLE, Scott Rev.
1902-1997
Reverend Scott Castle, 95, of Paintsville, died Saturday,  Nov.29, 1997, at Salyersville Health Care Center, in Magoffin Co Ky. He was born July 7, 1902, in Johnson County, the son of  Lafe Castle and Mary Daniels Castle. He was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife, Bertha VanHoose Castle. He is survived by one son, Scotty Castle of Sacramento, Calif.; three daughters, Mary Rose Ward of Paintsville; Ruby Snowden of Corning, Ohio; and Virginia Music of Columbus, Ohio; 16 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren. Services were December 2, at Toms Creek Freewill Baptist Church in Nippa, with James Kelly Caudill, Herb Arms and Dick VanHoose officiating. Burial was in the Staffordsville Freewill Baptist Church Cemetery, Staffordsville, Johnson Co Ky.


CHURCH, Robert
1906-1997
Robert Church, 91, of Nippa, died Tuesday, November 18, 1997. He was born February 6, 1906, in Johnson County, the son of James Alfred and Laura Church. He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins. Services were November 21 at Preston Funeral Home Chapel with Bob Lyons and Dick VanHoose officiating. DANIELS, Rufus
1933-1997
Rufus Daniels, 63, of River, died Thursday, November 27, 1997. He was born December 3,1933, in Johnson County, the son of Ferrie Daniels and Flossie Scarberry. He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Ivory Sparks Daniels; one son, Jimmy Daniels of River; two brothers, Bob Daniels of Nippa and Robbie Daniels of Springfield, Oh.; one sister, Mary Mae Spencer of Van Lear; and one grandchild. Services were November 30, at Jones-Preston Funeral Home with Gail Music and Arthur Todd Scarberry officiating. Burial was in the family cemetery at Lucy Castle Hollow in River.


DEBOARD, Billah Gay (Campbell)
1939-1997 Billah Gay Campbell DeBoard, 58, of Thelma, died Friday, November 7 1997 at Highland Regional Medical Center. She was born February 2, 1939, in Floyd County, the daughter of Hargis Campbell and Dixie Click Campbell. She was preceded in death by her father. She is survived by her mother; her husband, Kenneth DeBoard; one son, Mark DeBoard of Richmond; one daughter, Valarie DeBoard Blair of Thelma; one brother, Henry Campbell of Sidney, Ohio; one half-brother, Mont Campbell of Prestonsburg; two sisters, Oral Allen of Moraine, Ohio; and Lottie Fraley of Ypsilanti, Mich.; two half-sisters, Etta Scott of Garrett and Mima Jean Caudill of Sidney, Ohio. Services were November 9, at Jones-Preston Funeral Home Chapel with Dick VanHoose officiating. Burial was in the Highland Memorial Park in Staffordsville

Eva Mae Hazlette Estep, 86, of Paintsville, died Wednesday, November 19, 1997, at Sayre Christian Village Nursing Home in Lexington, Ky. She was born March 11, 1911, in Magoffin County, the daughter of Thomas Hazlette and Hannah Collinsworth. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband George Estep. She is survived by three sons, George Estep and James Estep, both of Lexington; and David Estep of Van Lear; three daughters-in-law, Sue Estep and Helen Estep, both of Lexington; and Marcie Estep of Van Lear; five brothers, John Hazlette and Sammie Hazlette, both of Ypsilanti, Mich.; James W Hazlette of Prestonsburg; and Clyde Hazlette and Thomas Hazlette, both of Hager Hill; five sisters, Ruth Centers of Paintsville; Mattie Wright and Julie Swartz, both of Dayton Beach, Fla.; Fannie Ehman of Shelby, Ohio; and Sarah Hazlette of Ft Wayne, Ohio; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Services were November 22 at Jones-Preston Funeral Home with Dick VanHoose and Manford Fannin officiating. Burial was at Highland Memorial Park in Staffordsville.

Paul K. Fairchild, 57, of Marysville, Ohio, died Thursday, November 20, 1997. He was born December 23, 1939, in Paintsville, the son of Kennis Fairchild and Bessie Selvage. He was preceded in death by his mother, Bessie Selvage; and his brother, Alton D. Fairchild. He is survived by his wife, Wanda Myers Fairchild; two children, Amber (Kelly) Eirich of West Liberty, Ohio; and Allisa Fairchild of West Liberty, Ohio, five stepchildren, Diane Copeland, Rhonda Frazier, James Copeland, Tammy (Doug) Jackson, and Nickie (Jeramy) Frazier, all of Marysville, Ohio; two brothers, Alvis (Phyllis) Roberts of Irwin, Ohio; Robert (Nina) Fairchild of Milford Center, Ohio; four sisters, Delores (Charles) Woodworth of Milford Center, Ohio; Phyllis (Robert) Haney of Paintsville; Gladys (Robert) Short and Irma Damron, both of Milford Center, Ohio; and six grandchildren. Nola Mae Castle Fitch, 79, died Sunday, November 16, 1997, at Appalachian Regional Hospital. She was born July 13, 1918, in Johnson County, the daughter of Hard Castle and Sarah Frances Scarberry. She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, Burton Fitch. She is survived by two sons, Gary Lynn Fitch and Burton Glenn Fitch, both of Paintsville; two daughters, Verlie Brink and Willadean Cole, both of Paintsville; four sisters, Jean Hayes of Lowmansville; Elleda Stambaugh of River; Clora Copas of Urbana, Ohio; and Betty Flowers of Toledo, Ohio; 14 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren. Services were November 20, at the Third Street Freewill Baptist Church with Larry Blair and Gail Music officiating. Burial was in the Thealka Cemetery. Paintsville Herald  Dec.10 1997

Tom Hall, 49, of Paintsviile, died Saturday, November 1, 1997, at Paul B. Hall Regional Medical Center. He was born June 30, 1948, in Auxier, the son of Melvin Hall and Edith Mollette. He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Pamela Jo Hall; two daughters, Michelle Renee Caldwell of Thealka and Rhonda Jean Franklin of Paris; four brothers David King, Benny Hall and Jerry Hall, all of Auxier; and Phillip Hall of Tennessee; five sisters, Wanda Sagarsee, Linda Hall and Kay Goble, all of Auxier; Debbie Burchett of Tutor Key; and Helen Skeens of Indiana; and one grandchild. MCKENZIE, Lydia Bell (Burton)
1907-1997
Lydia Bell McKenzie, 90, of Blaine, died Monday, November 24 1997 at the home of her son, Jesse McKenzie of St. Albans, West Virginia. Mrs. McKenzie was born July 21, 1907, in Blaine, a daughter of the late David and Rosa Salyers Burton. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Oak McKenzie in 1992. She was a member of Old Hood United Baptist Church. Additional survivors include, a son, Albert McKenzie of South Charleston, West Virginia; a sister, Irene Burdette of South Charleston; seven grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. The funeral will be conducted Wednesday, November 26 (today) at 1:00 p.m. at Young Funeral Home Chapel with Kelly Caudill officiating. Burial will be in Marvin Sparks Cemetery. He was born March 29, 1939, in Johnson County, the son of Charlie and Louella Burke McKenzie. He was preceded in death by his father. He is survived by his wife, Mary Staniford McKenzie; one son, William McKenzie, Jr., of Louisa; one daughter, Deloria Arrowood of River; one brother, Francis Darrell McKenzie of Indiana; one half-sister, Hester Holt of Ohio; and one grandchild. He is survived by one son, Michael Ward Meade of Prestonsburg; four daughters, Bonnie Porter of Lexington; Sharon Cross Sammons Prestonsburg, Betty Cook of Indianapolis, Indiana; and Judy Manteuffel of Cincinnati, Ohio; one  brother, Azie Meade of Flatswood; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Howard V. Stambaugh, 65, died Saturday, November 8, 1997, at Paul B. Hall Regional Medical Center. He was born April 27, 1932, the son of Winston Stambaugh and Pearl Daniels. He was preceded in death by his father. He is survived by his wife, Alice Jewell VanHoose three daughters, Glenda Grayson of Inez; Karen Sowards of Flat Gap; and Denna Ratliff of Nippa; three brothers, Paul Stambaugh, Ted Stambaugh and Bill Stambaugh; and six grandchildren. Services were November 11 at Toms Creek Freewill Baptist Church with James Kelly Caudill and Dick VanHoose officiating. Burial was in the Highland Memorial Park Cemetery in Staffordsville.

Vern Walters, 72, of Williamsport, died Tuesday, November 11, 1997, at Paul B. Hall Medical Center. He was born March 17, 1925, in Johnson County, the son of Taulbee Walters and Laura Spriggs Walters. He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Ruby Castle Waiters; one son, Gary Wayne Walters of Richmond; two daughters, Marcella Pack of Thelma; and Deborah K. Smith of Williamsport; one brother, Wince Walters of Offutt; three sisters, Ethel Wallen of Ashland; Nannie Hall of Indiana; and Audrey Faye Ward of Offutt; seven grandchildren; two greatgrandchildren; two step-grandchildren and one step-great-grandchild. Services were November 12, at the Old Friendship United Baptist Church in Williamsport with Flem Arrowood, Shadie Lee Walters and Rutherford Blair officiating. Bessie Miller Webb, 97, of East Point, died Thursday, November 20, 1997. She was born November 18, 1900, in Lawrence County, the daughter of Henry B. Miller and Tealie Meade. She was preceded in death by her  parents; her husband McKinley Webb; one son, Henry Jacob Webb; and one daughter,  Mildred Banks. She is survived by six daughters; Geneva Saunders of East Point; Estillene Martin of Lydon, Ohio; Emogene Music of Auxier; Muriel Dutton of Dayton, Ohio; Kinalee Horne of East Point; and Addie Stambaugh of East Point; three brothers, David Miller and Edward Miller, both of Louisa; and Junior Miller of Monroe, Michigan; one sister, Kitty Ruth Carroll of Monroe, Michigan; 13 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Services were November 23, at Jones-Preston Funeral Home Chapel with Dave Flanery officiating. Burial was in the Webb Cemetery at East Point.


WELCH, Jordan Allen
1993-1997
Jordan Allen VVelch, 4, of Hager Hill, died November 26, 1997, at Cabell Huntington Hospital in Huntington, W Va. He was born April 6, 1993 in Pikeville the son of Benjamin and Melanie Rice Welch. He is survived by his parents, paternal grandparents, Mart Ray Welch of Louisa; and Sue Welch of Whitehouse; maternal grandparents Bob Rice of Paintsville; and Deborah Combs of Sitka one twin brother Joseph A Welch of Hager Hill; and several aunts and uncles. Services were November 29 at Preston Funeral Home Chapel with Lonny Ratliff, John Skaggs and Hubert Slone officiating. Burial was in the Johnson County Memorial Cemetery at Staffordsville.


WELLS, Addis Marie
1915-1997
Addis Marie Wells, 82, of Paintsville, died Monday, November 10,1997, at Riverview Nursing Home. She was born July 27, 1915, in Magoffin County, the daughter of Green Phipps and Nancy Ann Williams. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Ivory Wells. She is survived by one daughter, Marbel Williamson of Paintsville; one sister, Lola Honeycutt of Kelseville, Calif.; and two granddaughters, Mary Ann Williamson and Lola Williamson Lyle, both of Lexington. Services will be November 12 at the Highland Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with Arville Short officiating. Burial will be in the Highland Memorial Park in Staffordsville.
