Henry Farris Arrowood, born March 25, 1887 at River, Ky., died September 10, 1957 at 2:30 am at his home. He was 70 years, 5 months and 16 days old. He was the son of William and Matilia Welch Arrowood, who preceded him in death. He met and married Julia Daniel, and to this union were born five children, of which two preceded him in infancy, one son, Clarence Arrowood preceded him also at the age of 28 years. Those children that survive are : Clyde Arrowood,Dayton, Ohio, one daughter, Nella Arrowood at home, This leaves to mourn his passing his wife, two children, four grandchildren, three great grandchildren, four brothers and four sisters. These are: Marion Arrowood, River; Pete Arrowood, Kenova, WV.; Garrett Arrowood, Kodak; Ulysses Arrowood, Gallipolis, Ohio;Mrs. Julia Russell, Merrimac, WV., Mrs. Emma Brown, Van Lear, Mrs. Florence Wallace, Wayland, Mrs. Nancy Jane Castle, Thealka. Former Herald Printer, Dies Friday
Heart Attack
Fatal In Columbus, Ohio
Warren M. Gullett,
50, formerly employed as a linotype operator for the Paintsville Herald,
died in Columbus, Ohio, at 5: a.m. Friday, September 6, while en route
to a hospital. He suffered a heart attack while working in a Columbus printing
establishment, where he had worked for the past two years. Mr. Gullett
was born in Johnson County on February 16, 1907, a son of the late Sherman
and Irene Bush Gullett. He followed his father in the printing trade, both
having worked for many years in the Herald shop. He enjoyed a hobby of
wood carving in his leisure hours and he often carved miniature interiors
of log cabins, with authentic early American furnishings, which he loved
to present to his friends. He once appeared on television station WSAZ-TV
in Huntington with his reproduction of Harman Station, the old fort that
bought the first white settlers in Eastern Kentucky. He was married to
Mollie McFaddin Gullett who survives him. He was a member of the Southside
Freewill Baptist Church, and was member of the IOOF Lodge of Paintsville.
Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Geraldine Wells of Columbus, OH; one son,
Warren M. Gullet, Jr., Knoxville, TN, five brothers, Paul gullet, Canton,
OH; Charles Gullett, Lexington, KY, William gullet, Owensboro, KY, Robert
Gullett, Portsmouth, OH and four grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted
at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, September 8, at the Southside Freewill Baptist Church
by Rev. Claude Preston and Rev. Vern Conley. Burial was made in the family

EDMOND ISAAC,
RETIRED MINER DIES SATURDAY
Edmond Isaac,
82, died Saturday morning, September 21, 1957 in a local hospital after
an illness of four months. He was born in Lawrence County April 25, 1875.
the son of the late Henry and Mary Jacobs Isaac. A retired miner, he had
made his home at Hager Hill for the past seventeen years and was a member
of the Freewill Baptist Church. Surviving are his widow, Martha Conley
Isaac; two sons, Martin, Hager Hill, and Hubert, Detroit Michigan; one
grandson, Clyde Isaac, one brother, Milt Isaac, Huntington, W. Va. Funeral
services were conducted at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, September 24, 1957 from
the Third Street Freewill Baptist Church in this city by Rev. Claude Preston.
Burial was in the Conley Cemetery at Falcon. Paintsville Herald Wednesday

65, EAST POINT MAN, PASSES SEPT. 10
Robie Milon,
65, died in a local hospital, Tuesday, September 10, 1957 at 8:00 a.m.,
following an illness of six months. The son of the late Sam and Elizabeth
Milon, he was born July 18, 1892, in Grayson County, Virginia. A well known
farmer of the East Point community where he made his home for the past
five years, he was a member of the United Baptist Church and a veteran
of World War I. Surviving are his wife, Edna Akers Milon, and one son,
Charles. Funeral services were conducted from the Lick Fork United Baptist
Church at 10:00 a.m., Friday, September 13, 1957 with Merida Wiley and
Millard O’Bryan as officiating ministers. Burial was in the family cemetery

Robert E. Murry
Drowning Victim At Preston Lake
Robert E. Murry,
30, was drowned in Preston Lake near River about 11:30 Thursday morning,
September 26. The victim had gone to the artificial lake to fish with his
father, Otto Murry, of Meally and Irvin Ward. He accidentally fell from
the bank into the water and his body was not recovered until more than
an hour afterward. He was a resident of Meally where he had resided for
15 years, and was a mechanic by occupation. He was born Oct. 29, 1926,
at Ashland, Ky. He was married to Frances Burke on Sept. 1, 1944. Surviving
besides his wife and father are his mother, Mrs. Laura Morris Murry, one
daughter, Susie Murry, at home, one sister, Mrs. Mary Short of Meally,
and one brother, Bill Murry of Louisa. Funeral services were conducted
by Rev. Tom Sammons, Rev. Elzie Banks, and Rev. Leonard Walters at 10:00
a.m. Sunday at the Buffalo United Baptist Church. Burial was made in the

Fatal Wednesday To John Penix
John Penix, 62,
died of a heart attack at his home at Williamsport at 2:30 a.m., Wednesday,
September 11, after an illness of six months. He was born at Williamsport
November 5, 1895, the son of Elias and Fannie Pack Penix. He was
formerly employed as a miner and was a member of the UMWA. He was married
October 14, 1922, at Van Lear to the former Neva Ward, who survives.
Also surviving are five children, three sons, Ingram, Vandalia, O; Earl
and Morris Lee, both of Dayton, Ohio; two daughters, Mrs. Lucille Madden,
Cleves, Ohio; Mrs. Beatrice Mae Williams, Cincinnati, Ohio; a brother,
Hobart Penix, Williamsport, one sister, Mrs. Mary Muncy, Williamsport.
He also leaves ten grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Funeral services
were held Saturday, September 14, at 11:00 a.m., at the Old Friendship
United Baptist Church at Williamsport with Arthur Priest and Nim Sturgill
as officiating ministers. Graveside rites were conducted by Local
Union 6161, UMWA, of David. Burial was in the Penix Cemetery at Williamsport.

Succumbs Sunday At Home At Meally
Mrs. Sarah Powers,
73, died at her home at Meally at 2:30 p.m., September 8, a victim of cancer.
She was born in Lee County April 7, 1884. and had been a resident of Meally
for the past forty years. Her husband, Garfield Powers survives. Funeral
services were conducted Tuesday at 10:00 a.m., at the Church of Christ
at Meally with Rev. W. L. Webb as the officiating minister. Burial was

Dies Suddenly Of Heart Attack
Waitman Preston,
57, well-known carpenter of River, died of a heart attack at 7:40 a.m.,
Tuesday, September 24. The fatal seizure occurred suddenly while he was
at work. A lifelong resident of River, he was born in that community April
20, 1885, the son of Will and Myrtle Spears Preston. He was a member of
the United Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife, Dora Lynn Preston;
seven children; five sons, Curtis, Dayton, Ohio; Kenneth, Huntington, W.
Va.; Bobby Jean, Dayton, Ohio; Donald, Dayton, Ohio; Thomas, River; two
daughters, Mrs. Walter Davis, City, Miss Betty Preston, River; and the
following brothers and sisters: Mrs. Barbara Franklin, River; Mrs. Margie
Daniels, River; Mrs. Irene Parson, Catlettsburg; Stella Preston, Catlettsburg;
Herman, River; Raymond, Boons Camp; Victor, Wharton, W. Va., Homer, Dayton,
Ohio; Paul, Dayton, Ohio; and Junior, Dayton, Ohio. Funeral services were
conducted from the River United Baptist Church at 2:00 p.m., Thursday,
September 26, with Revs. C. J. Sparks, and Germ Walters. Burial was in

Fatal Friday to Tina Steward
Mrs. Tina Steward,
79, died of a heart attack at 5:00 p.m., September 27, while en route to
a hospital. The daughter of Charlie and Martha Dixon Turner, she was born
May 9, 1878, at Sitka. She had made her home in Paintsville for the
past 6 months and was a member of the Freewill Baptist Church. Her
husband, Dow Steward, preceded her in death march 9, 1949. Survivors include
two daughters, Mrs. Irene Trimble, City, Mrs. Sola Akers, Phoeniz, Ariz.;
six half-brothers, Roy Castle, Wittensville, Herbert Castle, Thealka, McKinley
Castle, Wittensville, William Castle, Ashland, Sullivan Castle, Urbana,
Ohio, and Corbet Castle, Wittensville; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted from the Mouth of Rush Freewill Baptist
Church at 1:00 p.m., Monday, September 30, with the Rev. Millard VanHoose
as the officiating minister. Burial was in the family cemetery at

NATIVE OF COUNTY PASSES IN OHIO
Mrs. Emma Turner,
59, died in a hospital in Portsmouth, Ohio, Saturday morning, September
7, (1957), after an illness of two years. The daughter of the late M. K.
and Missouri Webb Williams, she was born in Johnson County March 9, 1898.
She had lived in Portsmouth for the past 30 years. Surviving are her husband,
George T. Turner and one son, Walter, of Portsmouth, Ohio; a sister, Mrs.
Male Lowder, Idaho, Ohio; and a brother, Virgil Williams, Red Bush. Funeral
services were held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, September 10, at the Red Bush
Baptist Church with Lonzo Reed, Tommie Bailey, and Ellis Hamilton as officiating

Passes Sunday Of Heart Attack
Services were
conducted at the Van Hoose Cemetery in this city Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. for
Mrs. Ethel Van Hoose, 38, who died in a local hospital Sunday, September
1 at 4:30 a.m. Death was attributed to a heart condition from which she
had suffered for the past year. A native of Floyd County, she was born
Feburary 16, 1919, the daughter of Hollis and Nola Davis Ward. She had
been a resident of this city for the past thirty years. She is survived
by her husband, Alvin Van Hoose, and one daughter, Polly Ann, at home.
Also surviving are three brothers, Lorenza Ward, Lovely, Ohio, and Ben
and Phillip Ward, both of this city. Rev. Scott Castle was the officiating
minister. Burial was in the Van Hoose Cemetery. Paintsville Herald Wednesday

Mrs. Rufus Sparks
of White House received word Saturday that her sister-in-law, Mrs. Antna
Ward, passed away at her home in Glenoma, WA. Mr. and Mrs. Ward moved to
Washington several years ago and had always been a subscriber to the Paintsville
Herald. They have one daughter (Geneva) Mrs. Wallace Meade and four grandchildren
who live in Canada. Mrs. Ward is the daughter of Mrs. T.J. Price and the
late Mr. Price of Henrietta. Mr. Ward is the son of Mrs. C.C. Ward and

Joe D. Ward,
74, Offutt Resident Passes Saturday
Joe D. Ward,
74, well-known resident of Offutt, died in a local hospital at 5:15 a.m.
Saturday, September 14, following an illness of several years. A member
of a prominent Johnson County family, he was born at Offutt April 17, 1883,
the son of Jefferson Davis and Sarah Hicks Ward. A lifelong resident
of Offutt, he was a successful farmer of that community. Surviving are
three children, one daughter, Mildred, Offutt; two sons, Earl and Glen,
both of Offutt; two sisters, Mrs. J. B. Wells, Sr., and Mrs. Laura Preston,
both of this city; three grandchildren and one great grandchild. Funeral
services were conducted from the home at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, September 15,
by the Rev. Charles Perry, pastor of the Mayo Memorial Church of this city.
Burial was in the Ward Cemetery at Offutt. Paintsville Herald Wednesday
