BAALS, Mary (Bayes)

Mary Frances
Hazelrigg Baals, 80, of Lima, Ohio, died Friday, September 12, 1997, at
Lima Convalescent Home. She was born January 29, 1917, in Johnson County
the daughter of Dr. Harry Hazelrigg and Murah Bayes. She was preceded in
death by her parents and her husband, Charles Stafford Baals. She is survived
by one daughter Elizabeth "Libby" Davison of Wapakoneta, Ohio; five grand
children Robert Webb, of Salt Lake City, Utah; Patricia Golden and Carolyn
Edwards, both of Wapakoneta, Ohio; Kimberly Webb of Ogden, Utah, and
Natalie Threlkeld; of Kaysville, Utah; and seven great-grandchiidren. Services
were September 16, at the Jones-Preston Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend
Frank Oden officiating. Burial was in the Richmond Cemetery.
CAUDILL, Margie
(Wright)
1927-1997
Age 70, of Salyersville,
died September 1, 1997 at Paul B. Hall Regional Medical Center in Paintsville
following an extended illness. She was born on February 1, 1927 in Floyd
County, and was a daughter of the late Brice and Bessie Patrick Wright.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ishmael Caudill, in 1985. She
was an owner and operator of Caudill Funeral Home and a former employee
of Preston Funeral Home. She was a charter member of the Order of the Eastern
Star, Magoffin Chapter No. 562. She is survived by a son, Larry Joe Caudill
of Lexington; one brother, Isom Wright, of Royalton; one sister, Ethel
May of Salyersville; one granddaughter, and one great-grandson. Funeral
services were conducted September 4 at the Dunn- Kelley/Prater & Dunn
Funeral Home with Joe Carroll, Roy Coffey and Junior Womack officiating.
Burial was made in the Bluegrass Cemetery in Salyersville
DANIEL, General

Van Lear resident
General "G.H." Daniel, 76, died Tuesday, September 9, 1997 at the V.A.
Medical Center in Huntington, West Virginia. Mr. Daniel was born July 21,
1921, in Johnson County, to the late Frank and Mahala Preston Daniel.
He was a retired mechanic from Consilidated Freight and a member of the
Pentecostal church in Barberton, Ohio. He was also preceded in death by
two wives, Roberta Daniel and Macie Daniel. Surviving are four sons, Larry
Keith and Larry Lee Daniel, both of Akron, Ohio, Albert Lee Daniel of Baraboo,
Wisconsin, and Tony Daniel of Mansfield, Ohio; three brothers, Shirley
Daniel of Thelma, Norton Daniel of Paintsville and Jess Daniel of Cliff;
three sisters, Okie Fraley of West Van Lear, Ethel Penix of Silver Creek,
New York, and Maybeth Fraley of Oceana, West Virginia; and 10 grandchildren
and 16 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Friday, September
12, at Old Friendship United Baptist Church, with Claude Mollette and Shade
Lee Walters officiating. Burial was in Old Friendship Memorial Garden at
Williamsport, with Preston Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Paintsville

DANIEL, Rose (Lewis)

Rose Daniel,
81, died Wednesday, September 10, 1997 in Mountain Manor Nursing Home.
Mrs. Daniel was born November 11,1915, in Johnson County, to the late Frank
and Cora Mollette Lewis. She was a former dorm counselor at the Carl D.
Perkins Rehabilitation Center and a member of Highland Church of Christ.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Hollie Daniels, on January
18, 1982. Surviving are one son, Hollie Keith Daniels of Williamsport,.
three daughters, Sue Carroll of Williamsport; Jennifer Kay VanHoose of
Staffordsville; and Jane Veal of Milledgeville, Georgia; three brothers,
Frank Lewis Jr., and Walter Lewis, both of Boons Camp, and John R. Lewis
of Whorton, West Virginia; three sisters, Ruth Bowling and Ethel Bowling,
both of Cincinnati, Ohio; and Mae Pyle of Boons Camp; and seven grandchildren
and six great- grandchildren. Funeral services were held Saturday, September
13, at Preston Funeral Home Chapel, with J.M. Scott officiating. Burial
was in Whitehouse cemetery at Whitehouse.
DANIELS, Edd
1910-1997
Funeral services
were held September 28, for Edd Daniels, 86, who died September 25, 1997,at
Highlands Regional Medical Center. Mr. Daniels was born October 1, 1910,
in Johnson County, to the late John L. and Teila VanHoose Daniels. He was
a miner. Surviving are two sons; James Daniels of Hatfield and Bob Daniels
of Versailles; two daughters, Joann Price of Paintsville and Jerri Combs
of Bowling Green; two half brothers, Charles E. Daniels and James Virgil
Daniels, both of Thealka; and four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Officiating at services at Baker Branch Freewill Baptist Church was Rev.
Hubert Slone. Burial was in Daniels Cemetery at Tutor Key, with Paintsville
Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Active pallbearers were Sam Pelphrey,
Randy Stump, Frankie Ward, Ronnie Woods, Curtis Stapleton, Jr., Eric Lautterwasser
and Tom Hall. Honorary pallbearers were Hollie VanHoose, Jay Prince, Ray
Ki Castle, Curtis Stapleton Sr., Mitchell Meade, Willard Bailey, Vencil
Meadows and Orville Nelson.
DAVIS, Miles E.
1926-1997
Paintsville Funeral
Home was in charge of arrangements for Miles E. Davis,71,1997 who died
September 28 at Woodland Oaks in Ashland, Ky. Mr. Davis was born September
26,1926, in Johnson County,Ky., to the late Franklin and Eula Kissinger
Davis. He was a laborer. Surviving are his wife, Kathryn Davis of Thelma;
three daughters, Judy Haar of Lexington, Joan Tackett of Thelma and Karen
Hencye of Ashland; and five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Graveside services were held Tuesday, September 30, at Johnson County Memorial
Cemetery at Staffordsville, with Brother Quentin Crum officiating.
DEVORE, George

Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements for George Sylvester DeVore,
75, who died Sunday, September 21, 1997 at Mountain Manor Nursing Home.
Mr. DeVore was born August 11, 1922, in Keener, Arkansas, to the late George
Sylvester and, Martha Lee DeVore Sr. He was a butcher, truck driver and
veteran of the U.S. Army. Surviving are his wife, Geraldine Music DeVore;
two sons, Galvin Fray DeVore; of Atlanta, Georgia, and Arthur Thomas DeVore
of Baltimore, Maryland; two daughters, Sandra Larue Scullen of Baltimore
and Antoinette DeVore of Sykesville, Maryland; one brother, Presley DeVore
of Cotter, Arkansas; five sisters, Hazel Cook, Opal Flippo, Ellen Harris
and Inez Rickel; all of Harrison, Arkansas, and Lorene Obenhaus of Mule
Shoe, Texas; and six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Funeral
services will be held today, Wednesday, Septemebr 24, at 11 a.m. at Jones-Preston
Funeral Home Chapel, with Dr. Thomas Valentine officiating. Burial will
be in Highland Memorial Park at Staffordsville.
EALEY, Arnold

Arnold Ealey,
79, died Tuesday, September 23, 1997 at Westwood. Mr: Ealey was born November
23, 1917, in Johnson County, to the late George and Sudie Trimble Ealey.
He was a plaster contractor and U.S. Navy veteran. Surviving are one son,
Arnold William Ealey Jr. of Delray Beach, Florida; one daughter, Lena Ruth
Gibbins of Westwood; one brother, Chadwick G. Ealey; two sisters, Betty
Robinson and Ruie Reed, both of Paintsville; and six grandchildren. Graveside
services were held Friday, September 26, at Ealey Family Cemetery at Barnetts
Creek, with Dick VanHoose officiating. Jones Preston Funeral Home was in
charge of arrangements.

Ealey, 58, of Paintsville, died Monday, September 8, 1997. He was born
September 3, 1939, in Johnson County, the son of Oliver "Dick" Ealey and
Mabel Geneveve Lemaster. He was preceded in death by one son, Brian Douglas
Ealey. He is survived by one son, Michael Ealey of Flat Gap; one daughter,
Leslie Conley of Georgetown; one sister, Judy Vanhoose of Las Vegas, Nev.;
and five grandchildren. Services were September 11, at the Christ Freedom
Worship Center in Hager Hill with Jerry Scott officiating. Burial was in
the Castle Family Cemetery in Thealka.
HALL, John C.Sr.

John C. Hall
Sr., Age 74, of Martin, husband of Kathryn Osborne Hall, died Wednesday,
September 3, 1997, at Martin, from a sudden illness. Born May 29, 1923
at McDowell, he was the son of the late Milford and Puss Martin Hall. He
was a graduate of McDowell High School, Mayo Vocational School, and later
worked as a welder in Newport News, Virginia, prior to the war. He was
a graduate of the Kentucky School of Embalming in Louisville, and returned
to Floyd County to work for the former E.R Arnold Funeral Home in Prestonsburg.
Being a licensed embalmer and funeral director since January 1949, he established
Hall Brothers Funeral Home in Martin with his brother, Birchell C. Hall,
and in 1979, Hall Funeral Home at Martin where at the time of his death,
he was the owner and operator. He was a charter member of the John W. Hall
Masonic Lodge No. 950 F&AM for 48 years, and served as a member of
the State Board of Embalmers and Funeral Directors of Kentucky. He was
inducted into the Floyd County Chamber of Commerce Hall of Fame and was
a U.S. Navy, World War II veteran. In addition to his wife, he is survived
by two sons, John C. Hall Jr. and his wife, Gloria N. Hall, of Martin,
and Tommy Hall and his wife, Dr. Burnetta Hall, of Martin; one daughter,
Kimberly Ann Hall of San Rafael, California; two sisters, Pauline Allen
of McDoweU and Verniece "Granny" Stamper of Martin; and two grandchildren,
Kara Kathryn Hall and Courtney Blair Hall. In addition to his parents,
he was preceded in death by three brothers, Wade Hall, Moses Hall, and
Birchell Hall; and one sister, Flotine Elam. Funeral services for John
C. Hall were conducted Saturday, September 6, at 11 a.m., at the Hall Funeral
Home Chapel, Martin, with the clergyman Arnold Turner Jr. officiating.
Entombment was in Highlands Memorial Park in Paintsville
JONES, Pauline
(Stambaugh)
1927-1997
Former Johnson
County resident, Pauline Stambaugh Jones, 69, died Monday September 22,
1997 at her Freeburn residence. Mrs. Jones was born November 27,1927, in
Johnson County, to the late Taylor and Ruth Brown Stambaugh. She was also
preceded in death by her husband, Elhanan Jones, on February 16,1977. Surviving
are two daughters, Mary Conley of Oil Springs and Betty Daniels of Freeburn;
four brothers, Minyard, Don, Sam and Eugene Stambaugh, all of Sitka; one
sister, Rudell McCoun of Batava, Ohio; and eight grandchildren. Funeral
services were held Thursday, September 25, at Oil Springs United Methodist
Church, with Euell Sammons officiating. Burial was in Jones Family Cemetery
at Sitka, with Jones-Preston Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
MASTERSON, William

William M. Masterson
83 died Wednesday, September 10 1997. He was born October 9, 1913 the son
of Harvey H. and Helen B. Masterson. He was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by his wife, Virginia Hager Masterson, one son, Dr. Michael
Masterson; one brother, Thomas Masterson three sisters, Betty Johnson Anne
Curry and Gail Gipson and three grandchildren. Graveside services were
at the Mayo Memorial Cemetery with Terry Reffett officiating. Burial was
in the Mayo Memorial Cemetery.
MEEK, Fay Edward

Fay Edward Meek,
46, died Friday, Sep.19 1998, in Martin County. I Mr. Meek was born
July 19 1951, in Johnson County, to the, late Willis and Mollie Delong
Meek. He was a rock truck driver for P & P Coal Company. Surviving
are his wife, Patricia Price Meek; one daughter Lisa Michelle Collins of
Van Lear; six brothers, Donis, Homer, Harry, and Paul Meek, a11 of Boons
Camp, Jack Meek of Thelma and Arnold Meek of Stanville two sisters, Joyce
Blevins of Staffordsville and Darlene Clark of West Alexanria, Ohio;, and
one grandchild. Funeral services were held Monday, September 22, at Preston
Funeral Home Chapel, with J.M. Scott officiating. Burial was in Lakeview
Memorial Cemetery at Staffordsville, Johnson Co Ky.

Preston, 92, of Paintsville, died Friday September 5, 1997 in Cincinnati,
Ohio. She was born January 19, 1905, in Johnson County, the daughter of
Jim Cobe and Zilphia Ward Preston. She was preceded in death by her husband,
Charles E. Preston. She is survived by her son Ray E. Preston of Paintsville
and her daughter, Herma Lee Sammons, of Cincinnati, Ohio; 12 grandchildren,
8 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren. Services were September
8 at the Preston Funeral Home Chapel with Robert Lee Murray officiating.
Burial was in the Richmond Cemetery, Johnson Co Ky. Weekly

Ratliff, 80, died Saturday, September 27, 1997 at King's Daughters Medical
Center in Ashland. Mrs. Ratliff was born January 12, 1917, in Lawrence
County, to the late Leo and Victoria DeBoard VanHoose. She was also preceded
in death by her husband, Hobert Ratliff, in 1987. Surviving are four sons,
Billy Joe Ratliff, James Hubert Ratliff and Paul H. Howard, all of Louisa,
and Burns Lee Ratliff of Whitehouse; and 12 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren
and three step-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Monday, September
29, at Jones-Preston Funeral Home Chapel, with John Hibshman officiating.
Burial was in Cumbo Cemetery at West Van Lear.

Salyer, 62, of Flat Gap, died Sunday, September 7, 1997, at Paul B. Hall
Regional Medical Ceneter in Paintsville. He was born December 18, 1934,
in Johnson County, the son of Ralph and Jewell McKenzie Salyer. He is survived
by his wife, Virginia Williams Salyer; two sons, Tom Salyer of Paintsville
and Jack Salyer of Thelma; his brother, Bill Salyer of Jamestown; and three
grandchildren. Services were September 9 at the Preston Funeral Home Chapel
with John Estep officiating. Burial was in the Highland Memorial Park in
Staffordsville.
SHAW, Carlos R.
1922-1997
Carlos R. Shaw,
74, died at his home in Paintsville on Sunday night, September 28, 1997
after a long illness. Mr. Shaw was born December 25, 1922, and raised on
Rock Creek in Boone County, West Virginia. He was the son of the late John
H. and Esther Gabbard Shaw. Mr. Shaw was a retired chemical operator for
DuPont and lived most of his life in Boone County, having moved to Paintsville
in his last few years to be closer to family. He was a lifelong member
of the Danville Church of Christ, member of O'Dell Lodge 115, Masonic Lodge,
Scottish Rite Bodies and a member of the Beni Kedem Shrine Temple. His
wife, Mary E. Price Shaw, preceded him in death in March 1992. Surviving
are three children, Jerry R. Shaw of Parkersburg, West Virginia, Nancy
V Lamm of Bradenton,Florida, and John C. Shaw of Paintsville; and
six grandchildren and one greatgrandson. Funeral services will be
held today, Wednesday, October 1, at 2 p.m. at Handley Funeral Home in
Danville, West Virginia. Burial will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery.

Patricia Preston
Stratton, 66, formerly of Paintsville, passed away on September 29 at St.
Josephs Mercy Hospital in Michigan. Born August 11, 1931, she was the daughter
of the late Shady K. Preston and Dorothy Wheeler Preston. She was
a member of the Calvary Baptist Church of Milan, Michigan. She is survived
by her husband, Rollen Stratton of Canton, Mich.; two daughters, Julie
Jacobs of Honolulu, Hi., and Vicki Stratton of Ypsilanti, Mich.; two sons,
Kenneth Stratton of Ypsilanti, Mich., and John Stratton of Plymouth, Mich.,
12 grandchildren; six great- grandchildren; a brother, Joe Kenneth Preston
of Lexington; two sisters, Joyce Preston Bailey of Tampa, Fla., and Judy
Preston Wallace of Alexandria, VA. Funeral services were conducted by the

Bobby Gene "Bob"
Wallin, 59, died Wednesday, September 17, 1997 at his residence Mr. Wallin
was born December 31,1937, in Johnson County, to Thelma Kelly Wallin and
the late Glen Wallin. He was a merchant. Surviving are his mother; his
wife, Jean Mayes Wallin; two sons, Jim of East Sparta, Ohio, and Glen of
San Antonio, Texas; one daughter, Beth Cassady of Lancaster; one brother,
James Wallin of Dayton, Ohio; and four grandchildren and one greatgrandchild.
Graveside services were held Friday, September 19, at Highland Memorial
Park at Staffordsville, with Willard Bailey officiating. Jones-Preston

WELLS, Susan (Martin)

Age 39, of Paintsville,
died Tuesday, Sep.16,1997 at Highlands Regional Medical Center following
an extended illness. She was the daughter of Richard E. Martin and Nancy
Vaughn Martin, of Prestonsburg, and was born Nov.08,1957, in Prestonsburg.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Prestonsburg. She was assistant
to the president at Highlands Regional Medical Center; administrator of
Consolidated Health System's Scholarship Fund; chairman of the advisory
board for the Southeast Area Health Education Center; a member of the American
College of Health Care Executives; director of the Kentucky Chapter of
the American Diabetes Association; a member of P.E.O.; and a graduate of
the Leadership Kentucky pro- gram. A member of the Floyd County Chamber
of Commerce, Wells pre- viously served on the Chamber's Board of Directors.
She was inducted into the Chamber's Hall of Fame in May. Wells was a graduate
of Prestonsburg High School and transylvania University where she received
a bachelor's degree in Biology. She was awarded a master's degree in Public
Health Administration from the University of South Carolina. In addition
to her parents, she is survived by her husband, Frank A. Wells Jr. of Prestonsburg;
a daughter, Kathryn Ann Wells of Paintsville; and a sister, Elizabeth Ann
Martin of Union. Funeral services will be con- ducted at 11 a.m. today,
Friday, at the First Baptist Church in Prestonsburg. Burial will be made
in Highlands Memorial Park in Paintsville under the direction of the Carter
Funeral Home
WHEELER, Everett

Everett Wheeler,
78, of Staffordsville, died Thursday, September 11, 1997, at Highlands
Regional Medical Center. He was born January 7, 1919 in Weeksbury, the
son of Tobe Wheeler and Susie Castle. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy
Wheeler of Staffordsville; six sons, William E. Wheeler of Denver; James
E. Wheeler of Sitka; Jerry M. Wheeler of Van Lear; Jesse Wheeler of Columbus,
Ohio; Charles E. Wheeler of Georgetown and Michael E. Wheeler of Staffordsville;
four daughters, Janet Fyffe of Hager Hill; Mary DeBloom of Daytona Beach,
Fla.; and Wilma Lee McGannon and Ruth J. Wheeler, both of Columbus; one
brother, Reverend Tobe Wheeler of Staffordsville; five sisters, Ella Maynard,
of Columbus; Grace Hobbs of Rittman, Ohio; Jane Rosenberg of Auburndale,
Fla; Elizabeth Ann Bortnick of Bellville, Fla., and Mary Ruth Mollett,
of Staffordsville; 20 grandchildren, 16 great-grand-children and seven
step-grand-children. Services were September 14, at the Little Lick Church
of God with Reverend Tobe Wheeler officiating. Burial was in the Wheeler
Family Cemetery in Staffordsville.
WITTEN, James

Sitka resident
James Curtis Witten, 77, died Wednesday, September 17,1997 at his
residence. Mr. Witten was born July 26, 1920, in Johnson County, to the
late Chester and Virgie Welch Witten. He was retired from First National
Bank, and a veteran of World War II, having served in the Army Air Corps.
He was a member of Sitka Church of Christ, Lions Club, Big Sandy Airport
Board, Paul B. Hall Regional Medical Center Board and El Hasa Shriners
and was a mason. Surviving are his wife Elizabeth Witten; three sons James
C. Jr., William C. and Robert W Witten, all of Sitka; one daughter, Lisa
Schaeffer of Louisa; two brothers, Harold Witten and Chester Witten Jr.,
both of Sitka four sisters, Jacqueline Arrowood of Thelma Joann Witten
of Sitka, Bonnie J. Phelps of Ft. Myers, Florida, and Betty M. McKenzie
of Catlettsburg; and 12 grandchildren Funeral services were held Friday,
September 19, at Jones Preston Funeral Home Chapel, with Dick VanHoose
and Jerry Scott officiating. Burial was in Lakeview Memorial Cemetery at
