Index to the 1851 Census of Liverpool

Irish Born

Introduction

This index is a listing of those people who gave Ireland, an Irish County or an Irish Town as their place of birth. It does not include other family members in the census returns who were not born in Ireland. To find family members born elsewhere then reference must be made to other LDS Census Indexes or PRO films. The indexed Piece No. and Folio for the Irish born person  will make this step easy.

1. This is an index of surnames after their transcription. In many cases the enumerator's handwriting (and spelling) is poor. Be prepared to find an entry under a name mistaken for the correct one.

2. The index provides you with a clue as to which part of the original returns you should check. You should use the original Census to verify that the index refers to the individual or family of interest.

3. The index not only gives the surname, folio number & piece number in abbreviated form i.e. 2176/1 but also includes the given name, occupation and place of birth. In the case of entries from piece no's HO 107/2186 to HO 107/2193 the age has also been included.

NOTES FOR USERS OF THIS INDEX

This is an index of surnames plus associated information which has been compiled direct from the census film. The quality of film combined with the enumerator's writing and spelling, in some cases, makes reading difficult. Be prepared to find an entry under a name mistaken for a correct one.

The following characters have been used under all headings, as necessary, to indicate (1) where there is no information on the film (2) the information cannot be read by the transcriber/indexer (3) a best guess has been made (4) there is more information on the film.

Note: For entries extracted from Piece No's HO 107/2176 to HO 107/2185 the Age has not routinely been indexed and the field has been left blank. However, the age has been entered to help identify members of the same family were other details are the same also infants of one or two months have been identified.

"-" by itself = No information on the film under this heading. "__?" = One or more letters cannot be read. "?" by itself = There is something on the film but it cannot be read by the indexer. "entry ?" = There is a degree of uncertainty about the entry. "+" = There is more information on the film than will fit into the field.

Where the initial letter of a surname is uncertain alternative spellings have been entered and these will appear in the relevant part of the index. Similar sounding surnames with possible different spellings and the same initial letter have been entered together as alternatives using "/".

Forenames common to both sexes or not easily identified with the sex are tagged with "F" or "M" in brackets.

Folio numbers: Pages without a printed Folio Number in the top right-hand corner have in all cases been identified with the suffix letter "A" such that FA follows F where F is a common Folio Number e.g. Folio 5A follows Folio 5 where Folio 5 A is a left hand page.
