My most sincere thanks to the Alexander Turnbull Library Wellington New Zealand for granting permission for me to use the above photograph of the S.S. Coptic. My great-grandmother Jane Bowden nee Spratt and her nine children (including my paternal grandmother Elizabeth) all traveled on this ship when they emigrated to New Zealand in 1891. Alas Jane died en route and is buried in Hobart Tasmania.

Lizzie (Elizabeth) the second eldest child was my paternal grandmother. Mrs. Bowden was Jane Spratt before her marriage to William Bowden. William died in Ireland on 22nd October 1889.Two years later the family emigrated to New Zealand. Jane was terribly seasick throughout the voyage. The Coptic called in at Hobart Tasmania. Jane was taken to the hospital there where she died after two days with heart disease. The children continued their voyage to New Zealand where the younger ones started school in January 1892. Jane Bowden nee Spratt had a lot of family (brothers) already settled in New Zealand. The children were farmed out amongst her family to be reared. I found my grandmother Elizabeth in the Women's voter's list in New Zealand 1894 & 1896. She was living in Howe Street Dunedin. I found no other record of her until she turned up back in Belfast Ireland. On 7th September 1903 she gave birth to my Dad William Moore. According to the 1911 census she had been married for eleven years to William Moore senior who was born 5th June 1846 Craigantlet County Down. I have not yet found the marriage. All paper records of William seem to have disappeared from Ireland after the 1851 census until he appeared on my Dad's birth certificate in 1903. No record has ever been found to suggest that he went to New Zealand. So I wonder where he went to for 52 years? Sadly Elizabeth died at her home 10 Lower Mount Street Belfast on 12th April 1911. Just twelve days after the census was taken. She was only 41 years old. My granddad struggled to rear my Dad for nearly three years. When he became to old and too sick he was forced to place my Dad into a Methodist orphanage/school for boys, which was the Craigmore at Aghalee. My grandfather died soon afterwards.

A very kind friend of genealogy (Margaret) traveled to Hobart recently and brought the photographs below back for me. The photos include my great-grandmother's (Jane Bowden) gravestone. I will always be indebted to Margaret as I would never get to Tasmania in my lifetime to take these wonderful photographs. So a very big thank you to Margaret for making this Tasmanian page possible.

Cornelian Bay Cemetery Hobart Tasmania

Margaret tells me that the cemetery is in a beautiful location. It is very large and is on and around a hill and is beautifully maintained.

The cemetery has beautiful old trees that were clearly planted a very long time ago

Each of the buildings above and below were in Hobart at the time my family were there in 1891.

The shelter above is situated within the cemetery.

The building above is known as "The Blacksmiths" and is within the cemetery. It is to the right of the crematorium building and can be seen on the cemetery plan at the link below.

It was Margaret who very kindly took these photographs while on holiday in Tasmania. I will forever be indebted to Margaret for sending me these photos. I would never have seen where my great-grandmother was buried if it was not for her kindness and generosity. Once again thank you so very much indeed Margaret.
